Abstract:The Quanji Massif preserves important records of late Paleoproterozoic metamorphic events that provide insights into the tectonic history of the Tarim Craton and its relation with the North China Craton. Here we investigate amphibolites from two regions in the Quanji Massif. U-Pb ages from metamorphic zircons in the amphibolites, combined with previously published ages from this region, define distinct metamorphic events during Paleoproterozoic. The earlier medium-P/T type upper amphibolite-facies metamorphic event occurred at ca. 1.90-1.96 Ga in a collisional setting. The second event took place with low-PIT type amphibolite-facies metamorphism in an arc setting at ca. 1.82-1.85 Ga, with a subsequent medium-P/T type metamorphism during arc-continental collision at ca. 1.80-1.82 Ga. Our data reveal for the first time that the late Paleoproterozoic metamorphic events in the Quanji Massif are closely comparable with those documented from the Khondalite Belt within the Inner Mongolia Suture Zone and the Trans-North China Orogen in the North China Craton. We therefore propose that the Quanji Massif and Tarim Craton probably shared similar tectonic histories with those of the North China Craton in the late Paleoproterozoic, coinciding with the global assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. Abstract:In the paleogeographic configuration of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia, the Tarim craton (northwestern China), traditionally seen as a single block, is placed either on the periphery near northern Australia or India or in a central position between Australia and Laurentia. To distinguish between these possibilities, we present here new primary paleomagnetic results from ca. 900 Ma volcanics in the Aksu region of the northwestern Tarim craton. The data reveal a -28 degrees latitudinal difference between the North Tarim and South Tarim blocks at ca. 900 Ma and constrain the age of amalgamation of the Tarim craton to between 870 and 820 Ma. Combining paleomagnetic poles from Tarim and major cratons of Rodinia with geological evidence, a two-stage orogenic model is proposed for the assembly of Rodinia. Late Mesoproterozoic orogenesis (1.3-1.0 Ga) led to the assembly of Australia- East Antarctica, Baltica, Umkondia, South Tarim, and Cathaysia with Laurentia, forming the core of Rodinia. Thereafter, the Jiangnan-Central Tarim Ocean separating North Tarim and Yangtze from South Tarim and Cathaysia was closed before ca. 820 Ma. This second Jiangnan-Central Tarim orogeny caused nearly coeval amalgamation of the peripheral Tarim and South China cratons by the welding of North Tarim and Yangtze to South Tarim and Cathaysia, respectively. The supercontinent of Rodinia was thus assembled by two orogenic phases separated by -200 m.y.
Mesoproterozoic Continental Breakup in Nw China: Evidence from Gray Gneisses from the North Wulan Terrane

Abstract:The North Wulan terrane forms part of the micro-continental blocks in the early Paleozoic Qilian and North Qaidam orogenic belts in NW China. LA-ICP-MS dating of magmatic zircons from two gray gneisses from this terrane yielded U-Pb ages of 1519 +/- 5 Ma and 1497 +/- 8 Ma, suggesting emplacement of their precursor magmas at similar to 1.5 Ga. The rocks have high SiO2 (70.6-75.6 wt.%) and Na2O (3.96-4.84 wt.%), but relatively low Al2O3 (mostly <15 wt.%) and K2O (0.90-2.52 wt.%) contents. They possess low contents of Ni, Cr, Sc, Sr, Rb and moderate Y, with slightly enriched LREE ((La/Yb)(N) = 3.46-11.3) and flat HREE ((Gd/ Yb)(N) = 0.95-2.06) patterns and strongly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*- 0.22-0.38). Thus, these rocks have trondhjemite compositions and are comparable to the low-Al or low-pressure TTG gneisses worldwide. Zircons from these rocks yielded epsilon Hf(t) and T-DM2 values of -2.2-5.1 and 1.93-2.39 Ga, respectively. Our data suggest that the precursor low-Al trondhjemite magma was generated from partial melting of the early Paleoproterozoic mafic rocks at shallow crust level through possible heat input from upwelling mantle in a continental rifting setting. We suggest that these similar to 1.5 Ga gneissic rocks were formed in a tectonic setting identical to that of coeval mafic sills and dykes in the northern Tarim Craton and western Yangtze Craton, and can be broadly correlated with the anorogenic magmatism associated with the initial fragmentation of the supercontinent Columbia. Abstract:The Tarim Craton (NW China) is a significant archive of tectonic events during the assembly and breakup of the Precambrian Supercontinents Columbia and Rodinia. It provides a comprehensive record of crustal development during the Proterozoic. In this paper, we review and synthesize the magmatic, metamorphic, and stratigraphic records of the Precambrian Tarim and delineate the geochronology of significant geological events that led to the formation of this major cratonic block. The extant geophysical and geological data show that the Tarim Craton consists mainly of the South and North Tarim blocks. The record of late Paleoproterozoic tectono-thermal events is well displayed in and across the craton, involving the amalgamation of these two blocks to form its unified crystalline basement during the Columbia buildup. However, the record of mid-Neoproterozoic events during the Rodinia assembly is only exposed around its periphery. The Proterozoic record of the craton includes the Mesoproterozoic–early Neoproterozoic low-grade metamorphic rock units and a late Neoproterozoic sedimentary cover. The early Mesoproterozoic stratigraphy in the SW, NE, and SE parts of the Tarim suggests a period of tectonic stability following the amalgamation of the North and South Tarim blocks in the late Paleoproterozoic, indicating the completion of its cratonic buildup. Newly identified late Mesoproterozoic magmatic and metamorphic rocks in the southwestern Tarim Craton and their implications for the assembly of Rodinia

Abstract:The Tarim Craton is thought to have been involved in the assembly of Rodinia during the late Mesoproterozoic–early Neoproterozoic; however, late Mesoproterozoic magmatic rocks related to the Grenville Orogeny have not previously been found in the Tarim Craton. We identified Grenville-age granites and amphibolites in the southwestern Tarim Craton. The granites were emplaced at 1129 Ma and have high Sr (303–661 ppm) and low Y (5.74–10.3 ppm) and Yb (0.63–1.34 ppm) contents and high Sr/Y ratios (41–81), indicating an adakitic affinity. The geochemistry of these rocks suggests that they were generated by partial melting of subducted oceanic crust with the involvement of subducted sediment and slab-derived fluid. SHRIMP U–Pb zircon ages reveal that the amphibolite protoliths were formed at 1128–1098 Ma. The amphibolites can be divided into two groups based on their geochemistry. Group 1 samples are enriched in light rare earth elements and large-ion lithophile elements and depleted in high field strength elements, similar to typical subduction-related volcanic rocks derived from mantle wedge metasomatized by subduction-derived fluid. Group 2 samples are characterized by high Nb contents (27–55 ppm) and resemble high-Nb basalt that originates from mantle wedge metasomatized by adakitic slab melts with the involvement of subducted sediment. Combining our results with evidence from regional magmatism, we propose that the southern Tarim Craton experienced long-lived subduction during the late Mesoproterozoic–early Neoproterozoic, and the 1129–1098 Ma magmatic events may represent the beginning of the assembly of Rodinia. Thus, we propose that the Tarim Craton was located at the periphery of Rodinia.

Abstract:Two layers of basaltic flows intercalated with Late Neoproterozoic (Sinian) sandstones have been identified in the Sugetbrak region in the northwest Tarim block, Northwest China. The basaltic rocks are composed of augite and plagioclase phenocrysts set in a groundmass of plagioclase laths with interstitial subophitic clinopyroxene grains and minor anhedral opaque minerals (magnetite and ilmenite). LA-MC-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircons from the lower basaltic flows yields a crystallization age of 783.7 +/- 2.3 Ma. Both layers of the basaltic rocks are characterized by low SiO2 and high total FeO (>12 wt.%),TiO2 (>3 wt.%) and P2O5 (>0.5 wt.%) contents and extremely high Na2O/K2O ratios, and display a Fenner trend of differentiation that could be ascribed to significant fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene and plagioclase. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics suggest the affinities of a transitional series between alkaline basalt and tholeiite. However, the lower basaltic flows have higher Nb/Y ratios than the upper ones, indicating that they are more alkaline. Positive age-corrected Nd isotope ratios [epsilon(Nd)(t)= +0.24-1.07] and positive epsilon(Hf)(t) values (+1.1-4.5) of the basaltic rocks suggest absence of any significant crustal contamination. High epsilon(Nd)(t) lavas are isotopically similar to those of several modern oceanic hotspots, and have ocean island-like patterns of incompatible elements. The estimated potential mantle temperature is similar to 100-150 degrees C higher than normal asthenospheric mantle, consistent with a plume-head origin. Moderate ratios of light rare earth elements (REE) to heavy REE indicate that the source magma was probably generated by partial melting of garnet-spinel transition facies of peridotite, but the upper basaltic rocks were derived from a relatively shallower mantle source, reflecting progressive lithosphere thinning possibly through plume-lithosphere interaction. We correlate the Sugetbrak basalts to the second Neoproterozoic mantle plume event (780-745 Ma) related to the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Recent reconstructions of the Rodinia supercontinent and its breakup incorporate South China as a “missing link” between Australia and Laurentia, and place the Tarim craton adjacent to northwestern Australia on the supercontinent's periphery. However, subsequent kinematic evolution toward Gondwana amalgamation requires complex geometric shuffling between South China and Tarim, which cannot be easily resolved with the stratigraphic records of those blocks. Here we present new paleomagnetic data from early Ediacaran strata of northwest Tarim, and document large-scale rotation at near-constant paleolatitudes during Cryogenian time. The rotation is coeval with Rodinia breakup, and Tarim's paleolatitudes are compatible with its placement between Australia and Laurentia, either by itself as an alternative “missing link” or joined with South China in that role. At the same time, indications of subduction-related magmatism in Tarim's Neoproterozoic record suggest that Rodinia breakup was dynamically linked to subduction retreat along its northern margin. Such a model is akin to early stages of Jurassic fragmentation within southern Gondwana, and implies more complicated subduction-related dynamics of supercontinent breakup than superplume impingement alone.
Early Neoproterozoic magmatism in the Central Tianshan Block, China: Implications for its tectono-magmatic evolution and relationship to Rodinia

Abstract:As an important ancient continental constituent of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), the Central Tianshan Block (CTB) is indispensable to improving our understanding of the early evolution and architectural framework of this orogenic belt. Here, we present new zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopes, as well as bulk-rock geochemistry, for amphibolite, gneissic granite, and augen granite from several localities in the CTB. Zircon U–Pb ages of ten samples demonstrate that the protolith of the amphibolite, gneissic granite, and augen granite formed in the early Neoproterozoic (from 905.9 ± 4.8 Ma to 940.0 ± 4.5 Ma). Geochemically, the early Neoproterozoic amphibolite is depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, but enriched in light REE (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), similar to arc-related basalt. The gneissic granites from the Shardland area and the Alatage area, and gneissic granites and augen granites from the Xingxingxia area are enriched in SiO 2 , Na 2 O + K 2 O, LREE, and LILE, and depleted in heavy REE (HREE) and high field strength elements (HFSE), exhibiting an I-type granite affinity. Zircons from the amphibolite in the Shardland area exhibit positive ε Hf (t) values of +1.7 to +4.9 and T DM1 model ages of 1.27–1.39 Ga, indicating that the protolith crystallized from a mantle-derived magma. Zircons from the gneissic granites in the Shardland area, the Alatage area and the Xingxingxia area have ε Hf (t) values that range from –5.9 to +7.3 and T DM2 model ages of 1.33–2.17 Ga, indicating that the granites may have been derived from partial melting of ancient continental crust that contained compositionally variable juvenile material. These new results, combined with previous studies, indicate that early Neoproterozoic magmatic rocks are well-developed throughout the CTB and formed along a subduction-related continental arc. The CTB and other microcontinents of the southwestern CAOB may have been located proximal to the northern margin of the Tarim Craton during the early Neoproterozoic, thereby representing the active continental margin of the circum-Rodinia subduction–accretion system.

Abstract:Late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic metamorphic and magmatic events related to the assembly of Rodinia are identified in microcontinents (such as North Wulan terrane, Qaidam block, Central Qilian terrane, Quanji Massif, and Hualong terrane) from the northeastern Tibet Plateau. However, the peak P–T conditions, P–T paths, and timing of the metamorphic events are still controversial. In this contribution, we integrate petrography, phase equilibrium modelling, mineral chemistry and zircon geochronology to develop a detailed metamorphic history of felsic paragneiss and garnet amphibolite from the North Wulan terrane. Zircon U–Pb geochronology reveals two stages of metamorphism at 1.2–1.0 Ga and ∼0.9 Ga. The earlier metamorphic event caused granulite-facies metamorphism with peak P–T conditions of 800–850 °C at 8–10 kbar. The second metamorphic event (∼0.9 Ga) reached amphibolite-facies conditions at 700–750 °C and 6–7 kbar. Granulite-facies metamorphism probably took place in an arc-related setting, whereas amphibolite-facies metamorphism was likely associated with tectonic extrusion during the collision between the North Wulan terrane and unknown continental fragments. The North Wulan terrane and surrounding continental blocks/fragments in the northeastern Tibet Plateau share a similar evolution that includes long-lived oceanic subduction from 1.2 to 1.0 Ga followed by continental collision at ∼0.9 Ga at the periphery of Rodinia. Our results improve the understanding of the tectonic processes responsible for microcontinent evolution in the northeastern Tibet Plateau during the assembly of Rodina, and provide important constraints on the reconstruction of Rodinia.

Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic Long-Lived Accretionary Orogeny in the Northern Tarim Craton

Abstract:The Tarim Craton, located in the center of Asia, was involved in the assembly and breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent during the Neoproterozoic and the subduction-accretion of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) during the Paleozoic. However, its tectonic evolution during these events is controversial, and a link between the Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic tectonic processes is missing. Here we present zircon U-Pb ages, Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemical data for the extensive granitoids in the western Kuruktag area, northeastern Tarim Craton. Three distinct periods of granitoid magmatism are evident: circa 830-820Ma, 660-630Ma, and 420-400Ma. The magma sources, melting conditions (pressure, temperature, and water availability), and tectonic settings of various granitoids from each period are determined. Based on our results and the geological, geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data from adjacent areas, a long-lived accretionary orogenic model is proposed. This model involves an early phase (circa 950-780Ma) of southward advancing accretion from the Tianshan to northern Tarim and a late phase (circa 780-600Ma) of northward retreating accretion, followed by back-arc opening and subsequent bidirectional subduction (circa 460-400Ma) of a composite back-arc basin (i.e., the South Tianshan Ocean). Our model highlights a long-lived accretionary history of the southwestern CAOB, which may have initiated as part of the circum-Rodinia subduction zone and was comparable with events occurring at the southern margin of the Siberian Craton, thus challenging the traditional southward migrating accretionary models for the CAOB.
