Abstract:This paper reviews a novel cell-based biosensor and Bio-MEMS which incorporate living cells as sensing elements that convert a change in immediate environment to signals conducive for processing.It is characterized with high sensitivity,excellent selectivity and fast response and have been implemented for a number of applications ranging from pharmaceutical screening to environmental pollutant detection.This paper also introduces our recent work about Light-Addressable Potentiometric Sensors （LAPS）,Field Effect Transistor （FET）,Micro-Electrode Array Sensors （MEAS） and Bio-MEMS for detecting the changes of concentration of extracellular ions and the action potential of living cell under effect of drugs and environmental parameters.Finely, the paper gives some prospects of cell-based biosensors in the future.

Abstract:The concept of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) emerged in the last decade, with various applications proposed.It was envisioned that the ubiquitous sensing and communication devices would soon be integrated into our daily life, to provide information and convenience wherever and whenever we need.However, to date, we have yet to see mass adoption of such applications, mainly due to the lack of viable wireless sensing devices, as well as the fragmentation of the data storage, computing, and networking infrastructure.Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing, as well as concurrent attempts in standardization in low-power wireless networking and security, are paving the way for the commercialization of WSN applications.With the commercial ecosystem getting in place and infrastructures becoming mature, the challenge lies in the research and development in low-cost, miniaturized, and self-sustaining circuits and systems, to realize sensing and wireless communication functionalities which are critical in the future WSN landscape.In this special issue, the latest research efforts on circuits and systems for wireless sensing are presented.10 research papers are published in this issue, covering a wide variety of topics including MAC and routing protocols for wireless sensor networks, integrated circuits, and devices for wireless sensors, as well as complete wireless sensor systems for real world applications.The highlights of these papers are summarized as follows."A 5 V-to-3.3V CMOS Linear Regulator with Three-Output Temperature-Independent Reference Voltages" by

Abstract:Cell-based biosensor is a hotspot in research of biosensors recently, which takes living cell as sensitive unit and analyzes the functional information of analytes. Cell-based biosensor characterizes with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and fast response. So it can be applied in many areas, such as biomedical, environmental detection and drugs discovery, etc. This paper reviews the development of surface processing technique of cell-based biosensor and our recent some research results. Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted extensive interest owing to their maximized atomic utilization, low cost as well as outstanding catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability for diverse applications. Due to their excellent performance in electrocatalysis, SACs can be applied to electrochemical sensors, which have been a predominant tool employed in biosensing. In very recent studies, SAC‐based electrochemical biosensors have demonstrated enhanced sensing performances in biomarker detection and in vivo analysis. However, a comprehensive review of SAC‐based electrochemical biosensors has not been reported yet. Herein, we present a summary of the synthesis methods of SACs with their application in electrochemical sensor establishment and electrochemical characterization methods in electrochemical sensing. Biomedical applications utilizing SAC‐based electrochemical biosensors are introduced. Finally, the existing challenges and future prospects of SACs in the field of electrochemical biosensing are discussed.
Bioanalytical and Chemical Sensors Using Living Taste, Olfactory, and Neural Cells and Tissues: a Short Review

Abstract:Biosensors utilizing living tissues and cells have recently gained significant attention as functional devices for chemical sensing and biochemical analysis. These devices integrate biological components (i.e. single cells, cell networks, tissues) with micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-based sensors and transducers. Various types of cells and tissues derived from natural and bioengineered sources have been used as recognition and sensing elements, which are generally characterized by high sensitivity and specificity. This review summarizes the state of the art in tissue- and cell-based biosensing platforms with an emphasis on those using taste, olfactory, and neural cells and tissues. Many of these devices employ unique integration strategies and sensing schemes based on sensitive transducers including microelectrode arrays (MEAs), field effect transistors (FETs), and light-addressable potentiometric sensors (LAPSs). Several groups have coupled these hybrid biosensors with microfluidics which offers added benefits of small sample volumes and enhanced automation. While this technology is currently limited to lab settings due to the limited stability of living biological components, further research to enhance their robustness will enable these devices to be employed in field and clinical settings.

Abstract:Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This special issue of Biotechnology Journal focuses on biosensors. By definition, biosensors are a type of devices that transduce biological recognition reactions to various physical signals including optical, electrochemical, acoustic and mechanical. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. As examples, nanomaterials and nanostructured surfaces have been proven of high utility in recognition-based capturing and signal amplification, which have remarkably increased the sensitivity for detecting a wide range of biomarkers for cancers, as well as targets other applications. To reflect important progress and provide a broader perspective in this exciting field, we organized this Special Issue by inviting active biosensor researchers to contribute a collection of research articles and reviews. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This issue contains three invited reviews. Tan et al. summarize recent advances in phage display technology for bioanalysis 1. Lee et al. review microtechnology-based organ systems and whole-body models for drug screening 2. Kuroda et al. describe the use of material-binding proteins and peptides for biosensing and summarized rapid and sensitive detection of airborne asbestos fibers 3. In ten research articles, two papers focus on the optimization of biosensors for better sensitivity, one explores the graphene interface for DNA analysis 4 and the other studies the electrode interface for electrochemical detection 5. Endo et al. developed printable photonics-based photonic crystal films for label-free optical detection of C-reactive protein using antigen-antibody reaction 6. An electrochemical sensing system employing fructosamine 6-kinase was developed for glycated albumin measurement without relying on proteolytic digestion 7. In an interesting study, Iijima et al. demonstrate that bio-nanocapsule-based scaffold improves the sensitivity and ligand-binding capacity of mammalian receptors on the sensor chip 8. Hokuto et al. employed bio-LSI systems for simultaneous immunosensing of different analytes in multiple specimens based on an imaging of enzyme activity 9. Two studies explored the use of aptamers for developing biosensors 10, 11. Xiao and Xiang proposed a simple fluorescence method for quantification of total phosphorothioate content in bacterial DNA 12. Finally, Chaumpluk et al. designed a simple bendable paper-based lab-on-a-chip for the detection of aflatoxic strains of Aspergillus sp.in herbal specimens 12. Abstract:AbstractSingle‐biomolecule electronic sensing techniques are of great importance in many fields, from medical diagnosis to disease surveillance. As the physiological changes of single biomolecules can be converted into measurable electrical signals, single‐molecule electronic biosensors can realize real‐time, highly sensitive, and high‐bandwidth detection of individual intra‐ or inter‐molecular interactions. These powerful single‐molecule sensing devices have demonstrated key advantages in precisely providing rare and detailed intermediate information along reaction pathways and revealing unique properties hidden in ensemble measurements. This review summarizes significant advances in single‐molecule electronic biosensors, emphasizing biomolecule recognition, interaction, and reaction dynamics at the single‐molecule level. Sensor configurations, sensing mechanisms, and representative applications are also discussed. Furthermore, a perspective on the use of photoelectric integrated systems for synchronous sensing of the electrical and optical signals of single biomolecules is provided.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor technology, with countless researches and attractive progress, has been commonly applied in the field of biochemical analysis. From theoretical research to design and produce of bioanalytical instrument, application development and performance improvement, our research team has been engaged in SPR study for almost 10 years and always concerned about the latest progress. This paper mainly includes: the description of principle, components and accessories of SPR bioanalytical instrument, modulation types and coupling configurations of SPR sensor, as well as SPR imaging sensor; the methods for improving the bioanalytical instrument performance, namely, the combination with local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technology, metal film redesign and data processing optimization; the lasted developments, involving the technology combination between the SPR and microfluidic chip, electrochemistry, surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS); the applications in clinical diagnosis, drugscreening, human biomolecular research, food safety and environmental monitoring; and the main problems and future trends of SPR bioanalytical instrument.

Abstract:Biosensors, devices capable of detecting biomolecules or bioactive substances, have recently become one of the important tools in the fields of bioanalysis and medical diagnostics. A biosensor is an analytical system composed of biosensitive elements and signal-processing elements used to detect various biological and chemical substances. Biomimetic elements are key to biosensor technology and are the components in a sensor that are responsible for identifying the target analyte. The construction methods and working principles of biosensors based on synthetic biomimetic elements, such as DNAzyme, molecular imprinted polymers and aptamers, and their updated applications in biomedical analysis are summarised. Finally, the technical bottlenecks and future development prospects for biomedical analysis are summarised and discussed.

Abstract:As a new kind of analytical instrument,the principles,types and characters of biosensors were discussed in this paper.A biosensor is usually composed of a recognition element of biological origin and a physicochemical transducer.The biological element is capable of sensing the presence,activity or concentration of a chemical analyse in solution.The sensing takes place either as a binding event or a biocatalytical event.These interactions produce a measurable change in a solution property,in which the transducer is converted into a quantifiable electrical signal.The principles,types and applications of biosensors in environmental inspection,food production,clinical medicine and military defense were reviewed,and the trends in research were predicated.Furthermore,an attempt had been made to describe the future development directions and prospects.

Abstract:The proposition of new sensors based on carbon (nano)structures as well as metal (nano)particles is a great alternative for electroanalysis. In this context, graphite, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon black and fullerene, as well as gold, silver, platinum, copper are the most common materials employed [1]. Also, biomolecules such as antibodies, DNA sequences, enzymes and aptamers can be promising molecular recognition elements and enable specific sensor/biosensor designs, with interferent species [2]. Since the pioneering works from Professor Joseph Wang [3,4], the screen‐printed and disposable electrodes have been reported in the literature as options to be used in point‐of‐care and point‐of use sites. Also, the evolution of 3D printing [5] and wearable devices have led to an increase in the number of papers reporting on their use.. The "Achilles heel" is that the laboratory creations don't make it to the market place [6]. Therefore, academia needs to think more about in the validation, demonstration and promotion of the laboratory developed technology with of new companies based on startups, for example, to attract investments and promote these sensors to commercial ones. In this context, the special issue "Electrochemical Sensing/Biosensing ‐ Bench to Market" brings the discussion and advances of electrochemical sensors, which can be used in many areas, such as medical, environmental, food safety, pharmaceutical, and forensic. For this purpose, the preparation, characterization, and application of these devices have attracted interest. Studies of the production, shelf‐life as well as reproducibility, and repeatability have been highlighted for mass production.
