Abstract:Environmental monitoring involves several steps such as sampling, sample handling and sample transportation to specialized laboratories, sample preparation and analysis. Traditional environmental monitoring approaches are based on discrete sampling methods followed by laboratory analysis. These approaches do not improve our understanding of the natural processes governing chemical species behavior, their transport and bioavailability, or the relationship between anthropogenic releases and their long-term impact on aquatic systems[1]. The challenge of environmental monitoring in situ requires new and improved analytical devices featuring precision, sensitivity, specificity, rapidity, and ease of operation to detect decreasing concentrations of an ever growing array of pollutants. Such devices must be comparable to or better than traditional analytical systems, and must be simple to handle, small, cheap, able to provide reliable information in real-time, and must be sensitive and selective for the analyte of interest, and suitable for in situ monitoring[2]. Biosensors not only fulfill all these requirements but also have applications in many areas such as clinical diagnostics, forensic chemistry, pharmaceutical studies, food quality control and environmental monitoring. A biosensor is an analytical device for the detection of an analyte that combines a biological component with a physicochemical detector component. It consists of 3 parts: (1) the sensitive biological element (biological material such as tissue, microorganisms, organelles, cell receptors, enzymes, antibodies, nucleic acids, etc.), a biologically derived material or biomimic; (2) the transducer or the detector element (works in a physicochemical way; optical, piezoelectric, electrochemical, etc.) that transforms the signal resulting from the interaction of the analyte with the biological element into another signal that can be more easily measured and quantified; (3) associated electronics or signal processors that are primarily responsible for the display of the results in a user-friendly way[3]. Depending on the type of transduction mechanism applied and the bio-recognition element employed, the potential for these devices for detection can be enormous. Abstract:As a new kind of analytical instrument,the principles,types and characters of biosensors were discussed in this paper.A biosensor is usually composed of a recognition element of biological origin and a physicochemical transducer.The biological element is capable of sensing the presence,activity or concentration of a chemical analyse in solution.The sensing takes place either as a binding event or a biocatalytical event.These interactions produce a measurable change in a solution property,in which the transducer is converted into a quantifiable electrical signal.The principles,types and applications of biosensors in environmental inspection,food production,clinical medicine and military defense were reviewed,and the trends in research were predicated.Furthermore,an attempt had been made to describe the future development directions and prospects.

Abstract:The last decade has been incredibly fruitful in proving the multifunctionality of paper for delivering innovative electrochemical (bio)sensors. The paper material exhibits unprecedented versatility to deal with complex liquid matrices and facilitate analytical detection in aerosol and solid phases. Such remarkable capabilities are feasible by exploiting the intrinsic features of paper, including porosity, capillary forces, and its easy modification, which allow for the fine designing of a paper device. In this review, we shed light on the most relevant paper-based electrochemical (bio)sensors published in the literature so far to identify the smart functional roles that paper can play to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications in the biomedical, environmental, agrifood, and security fields. Our analysis aims to highlight how paper's multifarious properties can be artfully harnessed for breaking the boundaries of the most classical applications of electrochemical (bio)sensors.

Abstract:The biosensors are devices that receive the biological message and convert it into a sensible electrical signal. The biosensing involves a combination of biological entities like DNA, RNA, and proteins/enzymes to the electrochemical transducers. Biosensors comprise a biorecognition element (enzyme, antigen, antibody or nucleic) that mediates selective biocatalysis or specific binding of analyte and transducers that able to measure the signal. There are several types of biosensors being employed today, such as optical, surface plasmon resonance, enzymes, DNA, Phage, and microbial biosensors. Now days biosensor technologies have been employed in biomedicine, food safety standards, defense and environmental monitoring. Detection of the lower or higher limits of glucose in the body, microbial invasion in the body and food, heavy metal detection in soil, water and airborne microbes, pesticides in water and soil and various harmful chemicals produced by body, can be easily and timely monitored with high precision using the different types of biosensors. Biosensors can overcome all the limitation of the traditional methods of chemical and microbiological analyses by offering rapid, non-destructive and affordable methods for quality control. Thus, this review paper highlights biosensor and its components, types of biosensors and its application in different disciplines.

Abstract:The proposition of new sensors based on carbon (nano)structures as well as metal (nano)particles is a great alternative for electroanalysis. In this context, graphite, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon black and fullerene, as well as gold, silver, platinum, copper are the most common materials employed [1]. Also, biomolecules such as antibodies, DNA sequences, enzymes and aptamers can be promising molecular recognition elements and enable specific sensor/biosensor designs, with interferent species [2]. Since the pioneering works from Professor Joseph Wang [3,4], the screen‐printed and disposable electrodes have been reported in the literature as options to be used in point‐of‐care and point‐of use sites. Also, the evolution of 3D printing [5] and wearable devices have led to an increase in the number of papers reporting on their use.. The "Achilles heel" is that the laboratory creations don't make it to the market place [6]. Therefore, academia needs to think more about in the validation, demonstration and promotion of the laboratory developed technology with of new companies based on startups, for example, to attract investments and promote these sensors to commercial ones. In this context, the special issue "Electrochemical Sensing/Biosensing ‐ Bench to Market" brings the discussion and advances of electrochemical sensors, which can be used in many areas, such as medical, environmental, food safety, pharmaceutical, and forensic. For this purpose, the preparation, characterization, and application of these devices have attracted interest. Studies of the production, shelf‐life as well as reproducibility, and repeatability have been highlighted for mass production.
