Abstract:Nowadays,increasing attention has been paid to people's health conditions.Based on the body sensor networks and the application of the architecture of wireless sensor networks in the community,we studied the technologies for continuous and non-invasive measurements of physiological parameters and the implementation platform of wearable medical devices and finally created a multi-layer architecture for Community Healthcare Monitoring applicable to the special group of persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.In the mean time,a new data aggregation model called Set Aggregation Model is brought out in order to decrease the energy consumption and prolong the life time of wireless sensor networks in the system.The security problems happened in the data process are also put forwards in the end.

Abstract:Recently, new technological advances in biosensors, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and wireless communications have enabled the design of low-cost, miniature, lightweight and intelligent physiological sensor nodes. These nodes, capable of sensing, processing and communicating one or more vital signs, can be seamlessly integrated into wireless Body Sensor Network for health monitoring. Using different forms of communication technologies(such as WLAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Satellite, GSM/GPRS, 3G, WiMax, etc.), these networks promise to revolutionize healthcare by allowing inexpensive, non-invasive, continuous, ambulatory health monitoring with almost real-time updates of medical records via the Internet. The objective of this paper is to provide a snapshot of the applications of Wireless Sensor Networks in healthcare monitoring. After analyzing a common three-tier architecture, a novel in-community healthcare monitoring system is introduced and studied. A brief review of the spectrum of these applications and the potential benefits of these efforts are also presented.

Abstract:The emerging technology and innovation on sensing technology, data computing, and artiﬁcial intelligence (AI) has resulted in an accelerated development of smart healthcare. This thematic issue on Sensing and Computing for Smart Healthcare aims to highlight the diverse advances and the latest developments and emergent technologies in healthcare applications concerning remote human health monitoring, physiological sensing and imaging, wear-able biosensors, intelligent computing and AI. The thematic issue attracted a good number of submissions from researchers in these domains. After critical peer-review and selection, four manuscripts were accepted for publica-tion in this thematic issue, covering the topics of image analysis and AI, physiological signal processing and disease detection, and ambient assisted living. The paper “ Ambient assisted living framework for elderly care using internet of medical things, smart sensors, and GRU deep learning techniques ” by Syed et al. proposes an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) system with Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) that leverages deep learning techniques to monitor and evaluate the elderly’s activities and vital signs for clinical decision support. By combining smart sensors (including accelerome-ters, gyroscopes, and magnetometers), IoMT infrastructure, and AI algorithms, elderly activities can be recognized and their heart rate variability over time can be monitored. The proposed AAL system is expected to be beneﬁcial during crucial situations such as the pandemics to remotely monitor elderly patients and their health-related status or risks. Abstract:Recent advances in sensing technologies significantly improve the observability of engineering systems toward improved system controllability and reliability. Also, emerging sensing techniques integrate sensing elements with in-situ data processing to transform the sensors to be “smart.” The broad applications of smart sensing for health monitoring in engineering systems provide a large amount of data with high variety and pose a big challenge on the data processing side. The significant development of artificial intelligence (AI) provides a promising approach for effectively learning from the complex and integrated multimodal data. The main objective of this Special Issue is to bring ideas from the research community, to drive the fundamental advances in the field of smart sensing and AI-enabled data analytics for health monitoring of engineering systems. Out of 60 total submissions, 20 articles have been selected and included in this Special Issue after rigorous review, and they represent the recent findings and emerging research developments in this area.

Abstract:Smart health big data is paving a promising way for ubiquitous health management, leveraging exciting advances in biomedical engineering technologies, such as convenient bio-sensing, health monitoring, in-home monitoring, biomedical signal processing, data mining, health trend tracking, and evidence-based medical decision support. To build and utilize the smart health big data, advanced data sensing and data mining technologies are closely coupled key enabling factors. In smart health big data innovations, challenges arise in how to informatively and robustly build the big data with advanced sensing technologies, and how to automatically and effectively decode patterns from the big data with intelligent computational methods. More specifically, advanced sensing techniques should be able to capture more modalities that can reflect rich physiological and behavioral states of humans, and enhance the signal robustness in daily wearable applications. In addition, intelligent computational techniques are required to unveil patterns deeply hidden in the data and nonlinearly convert the patterns to high-level medical insights.

Abstract:With the popularization of intelligent sensing and the improvement of modern medical technology, intelligent medical sensing technology has emerged as the times require. This technology combines basic disciplines such as physics, mathematics, and materials with modern technologies such as semiconductors, integrated circuits, and artificial intelligence, and has become one of the most promising in the medical field. The core of intelligent medical sensor technology is to make existing medical sensors intelligent, portable, and wearable with full consideration of ergonomics and sensor power consumption issues in order to conform to the current trends in cloud medicine, personalized medicine, and health monitoring. With the development of automation and intelligence in measurement and control systems, it is required that sensors have high accuracy, reliability, and stability, as well as certain data processing capabilities, self-checking, self-calibration, and self-compensation, while traditional medical sensors cannot meet such requirements. In addition, to manufacture high-performance sensors, it is also difficult to improve the material process alone, and it is necessary to combine computer technology with sensor technology to make up for its performance shortcomings. Intelligent medical sensing technology combines medical sensors with microprocessors to produce powerful intelligent medical sensors. Based on the original sensor functions, intelligent medical sensors also have functions such as self-compensation, self-calibration, self-diagnosis, numerical processing, two-way communication, information storage, and digital output. This review focuses on the application of intelligent medical sensing technology in biomedical sensing detection from three aspects: physical sensor, chemical sensor, and biosensor.

Abstract:Many challenges exist in health monitoring and management, such as continuous, accurate, and comfortable monitoring of multi-parameters, early detection and warning of diseases, as well as the interaction with environments. The challenges in healthcare raise health risks and imposes significant economic and social burden. Thus, seeking for the innovative solutions and new technologies to address these issues is very important. The development of modern sensors, Internet of Things, advanced materials, machine learning and AI technology has inspired the innovation on smart designs for healthcare. The novel intelligent wellness sensing platforms seamlessly integrate unobtrusive sensing technologies, data fusion techniques, advanced materials, and clinical practice. Physiological signs, behaviors and environmental information can be obtained effectively. By jointly analyzing physiological and behavioral parameters with environmental interaction information and using data fusion technology, the health-related activities can be identified, predicted and evaluated. With intelligent wellness sensing platform, personal health monitoring and forecasting will be provided assisting to develop personalised healthcare and health management plan, guiding people towards a healthier lifestyle. The multidisciplinary research on intelligent wellness sensing, machine learning, and biomedical signal processing will bring new development for improving the quality of life for people ranging from babies to aging population during their everyday life and have significant social impact.

Abstract:With the technological advancements, quality of human health measurements has reached to a new realm. Medical devices are routinely used to detect and record physiological signals that are essential for human health monitoring. Health monitoring and sensing devices are ranging from thermometers, heart rate monitors, blood oxygen monitors, and EEG recorders to ultrasound and MRI machines. Further, with the increase in human population, the data generated in hospitals and other health concerned places rapidly growing. However, the processing of huge amount of data generated from various sources such as Body Area Network (BAN), IoT-enabled health devices such as blood pressure and sugar monitoring devices, etc. is becoming an alarming issue in near future. Nevertheless, current health monitoring systems can be further improved by facilitating real-time signal measurements, modeling, and processing using Hadoop ecosystem, SPARK, GraphX and other data analytical tools. However, the existing advancements significantly influence the early diagnosis of a disease or disorder, while empowering preventive care practices, drug administration processes, and rehabilitation of physically disabled people. Moreover, noise filtration is demanded the betterment of bio-signal processing to determine dynamic models to understand the characteristics and behaviors that provide prominent features in detecting abnormalities within those signals.

Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine

Abstract:Increasingly wider availability of biomedical imaging modalities, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonic imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and optical imaging, have led to significant progresses in both biomedical research and clinical practice. Advancements in imaging technology and image informatics have facilitated and enabled quantitative understanding of the biological structures, functional organisms, and pathological mechanisms. This special issue presents 14 latest research contributions in computational biomedical imaging. The focuses have been on the computational principles, strategies, methods, and algorithms that create, extract, and understand imaging data of biomedical significance. The first group of papers has showcased the development and applications of rigorous optimization techniques in biomedical imaging. The work based on dual unscented Kalman filtering provides a reliable and efficient platform to understand the BOLD signals from fMRI. In the other paper, the robust discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to solve the branch-cut phase unwrapping problem of MRI data. Without the need for a regularization penalty term, a semigreed method for bioluminescence tomography reconstruction is fast and stable for small animal imaging. The second group of papers has addressed image segmentation and tissue characterization problems, ever popular among image analysis researchers. The work of L. Li et al. applies machine learning techniques to characterize lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer from gemstone spectral imaging with much improved outcomes, while G. V. Sanchez. Ferrero et al. make new advances in ultrasonic speckle characterization using generalized Gama distribution and generalized Gama mixture model. In recent years, physically meaningful modeling and simulation have become integral components for model-constrained imaging and model-based image understanding. Thus, the third group of papers has continued the stride in this direction. The propagation of myocardial electrical activation is simulated using a monodomain model, without the need of explicit mesh constraints. In similar spirit, one work performs forward modeling of 3D optical molecular imaging with simplified spherical harmonics approximation using extended finite element method. The final group of papers has highlighted some new imaging modalities and their potential use in clinical practice. The further development of ultrasound-based quantitative imaging of Young's modulus with high accuracy is presented in this issue. And the novel Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging shows that more detailed classification of brain tissues is clinical significance. We appreciate the many high quality submissions to this special issue from leading researchers in computational biomedical imaging. Because of space limitation, we can only accept a small number of most exciting works. We sincerely hope that the remaining interesting research outcomes will be soon published in other venues.
Biocompatible Sensors Are Revolutionizing Healthcare Technologies

Abstract:Sensors bridge the gap between disease diagnosis and the attainability of physiological indicators. The Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence algorithms have become the core of new-generation health technologies. However, some in-situ/in-vivo physiological indicators and intrinsic biological behaviors on the micro scale cannot be detected due to the loss of the spatial and temporal consistency of the samples by in-vitro detection methods that are widely used now. Recently, biocompatible sensors are developing rapidly and have provided the possibility for long-term and in-situ monitoring of physiological information. Here we review the biologically compatible sensors, including wearable, implantable, and ingestible sensors; outstanding features; design strategies; and applications. Moreover, the detection targets of the sensors are further divided into vital life parameters (such as body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate), biochemical indicators, electrophysiological signals (such as electrocardiography, electromyography, and electroencephalography), and motion signals based on the clinical needs. Derived from the emerging concept of next-generation diagnostics and healthcare technologies, we discuss unprecedentedly how biocompatible sensors reform the state-of-the-art healthcare system. Finally, the prospects and challenges of biocompatible sensors have been explored.

Abstract:Smart health is bringing vast and promising possibilities on the road to comprehensive health management. Smart health applications are strongly data-centric and, thus, empowered by two key factors: information sensing and information learning. In a smart health system, it is crucial to effectively sense individuals’ health information and intelligently learn from its high-level health insights. These two factors are also closely coupled. For example, to enhance the signal quality, a sensing array requires advanced information learning techniques to fuse the information, and to enrich medical insights in mobile health monitoring, we need to combine “multimodal signal processing and machine learning techniques” and “nonintrusive multimodality sensing methods.” In new smart health application exploration, challenges arise in both information sensing and learning, especially their areas of interaction.
