Towards A Novel In-Community Healthcare Monitoring System over Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Recently, new technological advances in biosensors, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and wireless communications have enabled the design of low-cost, miniature, lightweight and intelligent physiological sensor nodes. These nodes, capable of sensing, processing and communicating one or more vital signs, can be seamlessly integrated into wireless Body Sensor Network for health monitoring. Using different forms of communication technologies(such as WLAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Satellite, GSM/GPRS, 3G, WiMax, etc.), these networks promise to revolutionize healthcare by allowing inexpensive, non-invasive, continuous, ambulatory health monitoring with almost real-time updates of medical records via the Internet. The objective of this paper is to provide a snapshot of the applications of Wireless Sensor Networks in healthcare monitoring. After analyzing a common three-tier architecture, a novel in-community healthcare monitoring system is introduced and studied. A brief review of the spectrum of these applications and the potential benefits of these efforts are also presented.

Abstract:Nowadays,increasing attention has been paid to people's health conditions.Based on the body sensor networks and the application of the architecture of wireless sensor networks in the community,we studied the technologies for continuous and non-invasive measurements of physiological parameters and the implementation platform of wearable medical devices and finally created a multi-layer architecture for Community Healthcare Monitoring applicable to the special group of persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.In the mean time,a new data aggregation model called Set Aggregation Model is brought out in order to decrease the energy consumption and prolong the life time of wireless sensor networks in the system.The security problems happened in the data process are also put forwards in the end.

Abstract:Abstract With the increasing awareness of personal health management in recent decades, various types of flexible and wearable body sensors have been developed. Thanks to the superiority of advanced wearable technologies, including miniaturization, portability, stretchability, comfort, intelligent human-machine interface, etc, flexible and wearable body sensors hold great promise for next generation biomedicine and healthcare applications. Unfortunately, the data precision, response speed, sensitivity and selectivity, durability, compatibility with flexible substrates, and preparation techniques still need to be enhanced and refined to meet the requirements of clinical evaluations or even commercialization. According to working principles, flexible and wearable sensing platforms can be roughly divided into four categories: physical sensors, chemical sensors, biosensors, and the combination of different types of sensors. Here, a brief review focused on the recent developments of these flexible and wearable sensors applied especially to biomedicine and healthcare is presented. In addition, the existing challenges and potential opportunities ahead in flexible and wearable sensor technologies are discussed. Finally, an outlook of wearable sensing platforms in biomedicine and healthcare is proposed. We hope this review can provide guidance for superior flexible and wearable sensing technologies in the future and can provide an outlook for commercial wearable sensors.

Abstract:Wearable devices are a new means of human-computer interaction with different functions, underlying principles, and forms. They have been widely used in the medical and health fields, in applications including physiological signal monitoring; sports; and environmental detection, while subtly affecting people's lives and work. Wearable sensors as functional components of wearable devices have become a research focus. In this review, we systematically summarize recent progress in the development of wearable sensors and related devices. Wearable sensors in medical health applications, according to the principle of measurement, are divided into physical and chemical quantity detection. These sensors can monitor and measure specific parameters, thereby enabling continuously improvements in the quality and feasibility of medical treatment. Through the detection of human movement, such as breathing, heartbeat, or bending, wearable sensors can evaluate body movement and monitor an individual's physical performance and health status. Wearable devices detecting aspects of the environment while maintaining high adaptability to the human body can be used to evaluate environmental quality and obtain more accurate environmental information. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide new insights and directions for the future development and broader application of wearable devices in various fields.

Abstract:The fourth industrial revolution has led to the development and application of health monitoring sensors that are characterized by digitalization and intelligence. These sensors have extensive applications in medical care, personal health management, elderly care, sports, and other fields, providing people with more convenient and real-time health services. However, these sensors face limitations such as noise and drift, difficulty in extracting useful information from large amounts of data, and lack of feedback or control signals. The development of artificial intelligence has provided powerful tools and algorithms for data processing and analysis, enabling intelligent health monitoring, and achieving high-precision predictions and decisions. By integrating the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and health monitoring sensors, it becomes possible to realize a closed-loop system with the functions of real-time monitoring, data collection, online analysis, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. This review focuses on the development of healthcare artificial sensors enhanced by intelligent technologies from the aspects of materials, device structure, system integration, and application scenarios. Specifically, this review first introduces the great advances in wearable sensors for monitoring respiration rate, heart rate, pulse, sweat, and tears; implantable sensors for cardiovascular care, nerve signal acquisition, and neurotransmitter monitoring; soft wearable electronics for precise therapy. Then, the recent advances in volatile organic compound detection are highlighted. Next, the current developments of human-machine interfaces, AI-enhanced multimode sensors, and AI-enhanced self-sustainable systems are reviewed. Last, a perspective on future directions for further research development is also provided. In summary, the fusion of artificial intelligence and artificial sensors will provide more intelligent, convenient, and secure services for next-generation healthcare and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Sensors bridge the gap between disease diagnosis and the attainability of physiological indicators. The Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence algorithms have become the core of new-generation health technologies. However, some in-situ/in-vivo physiological indicators and intrinsic biological behaviors on the micro scale cannot be detected due to the loss of the spatial and temporal consistency of the samples by in-vitro detection methods that are widely used now. Recently, biocompatible sensors are developing rapidly and have provided the possibility for long-term and in-situ monitoring of physiological information. Here we review the biologically compatible sensors, including wearable, implantable, and ingestible sensors; outstanding features; design strategies; and applications. Moreover, the detection targets of the sensors are further divided into vital life parameters (such as body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate), biochemical indicators, electrophysiological signals (such as electrocardiography, electromyography, and electroencephalography), and motion signals based on the clinical needs. Derived from the emerging concept of next-generation diagnostics and healthcare technologies, we discuss unprecedentedly how biocompatible sensors reform the state-of-the-art healthcare system. Finally, the prospects and challenges of biocompatible sensors have been explored.

Abstract:AbstractThe fabrication of flexible sensors is a potential way to promote the progress of modern social science and technology due to their wide applications in high‐performance electronic equipment and devices. Flexible sensors based on organic materials combine the unique advantages of flexibility and low cost, increasing interest in healthcare monitoring, treatment, and human–machine interfaces. Advances in materials science and biotechnology have rapidly accelerated the development of bio‐integrated multifunctional sensors and devices. Due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties, many types of functional materials provided benefits for the construction of various sensors with improved flexibility and stretchability. In this review, recent advance in the fabrication of flexible sensors by using functional nanomaterials including nanoparticles, carbon materials, metal‐organic materials, and polymers is presented. In addition, the potential biomedical applications of the fabricated flexible sensors for detecting gas molecules signals, small molecules, DNA/RNA, proteins, others are introduced and discussed.

Abstract:<p>Wearable sensors have gained much attention due to their potential in personal health monitoring in a timely, cost‐effective, easy‐operating, and noninvasive way. In recent studies, nanomaterials have been employed in wearable sensors to improve the sensing performance in view of their excellent properties. Here, focus is mainly on the nanomaterial‐enabled wearable sensors and their latest advances in personal health monitoring. Different kinds of nanomaterials used in wearable sensors, such as metal nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanomaterials, hybrid nanocomposites, and bio‐nanomaterials, are reviewed. Then, the progress of nanomaterial‐based wearable sensors in personal health monitoring, including the detection of ions and molecules in body fluids and exhaled breath, physiological signals, and emotion parameters, is discussed. Furthermore, the future challenges and opportunities of nanomaterial‐enabled wearable sensors are discussed.</p>

Abstract:In recent years, the biochemical and biological research areas have shown great interest in a smart wearable sensor because of its increasing prevalence and high potential to monitor human health in a non-invasive manner by continuous screening of biomarkers dispersed throughout the biological analytes, as well as real-time diagnostic tools and time-sensitive information compared to conventional hospital-centered system. These smart wearable sensors offer an innovative option for evaluating and investigating human health by incorporating a portion of recent advances in technology and engineering that can enhance real-time point-of-care-testing capabilities. Smart wearable sensors have emerged progressively with a mixture of multiplexed biosensing, microfluidic sampling, and data acquisition systems incorporated with flexible substrate and bodily attachments for enhanced wearability, portability, and reliability. There is a good chance that smart wearable sensors will be relevant to the early detection and diagnosis of disease management and control. Therefore, pioneering smart wearable sensors into reality seems extremely promising despite possible challenges in this cutting-edge technology for a better future in the healthcare domain. This review presents critical viewpoints on recent developments in wearable sensors in the upcoming smart digital health monitoring in real-time scenarios. In addition, there have been proactive discussions in recent years on materials selection, design optimization, efficient fabrication tools, and data processing units, as well as their continuous monitoring and tracking strategy with system-level integration such as internet-of-things, cyber-physical systems, and machine learning algorithms.

Abstract:Sensors suitable for wearable devices have many special characteristics compared to other sensors, such as stability, sensitivity, sensor volume, biocompatibility, etc. With the development of wearable technology, amazing wearable sensors have attracted a lot of attention, and some researchers have done a large number of technology explorations and reviews. However, previous surveys generally concerned a specified application and comprehensively reviewed the computing techniques for the signals required by this application, as well as how computing can promote data processing. There is a gap in the opposite direction, i.e., the fundamental data source actively stimulates application rather than from the application to the data, and computing promotes the acquisition of data rather than data processing. To fill this gap, starting with different parts of the body as the source of signal, the fundamental data sources that can be obtained and detected are explored by combining the three sensing principles, as well as discussing and analyzing the existing and potential applications of machine learning in simplifying sensor designs and the fabrication of sensors.

Abstract:Biosensors, devices capable of detecting biomolecules or bioactive substances, have recently become one of the important tools in the fields of bioanalysis and medical diagnostics. A biosensor is an analytical system composed of biosensitive elements and signal-processing elements used to detect various biological and chemical substances. Biomimetic elements are key to biosensor technology and are the components in a sensor that are responsible for identifying the target analyte. The construction methods and working principles of biosensors based on synthetic biomimetic elements, such as DNAzyme, molecular imprinted polymers and aptamers, and their updated applications in biomedical analysis are summarised. Finally, the technical bottlenecks and future development prospects for biomedical analysis are summarised and discussed.

Abstract:The popularity of health concepts and the wave of digitalization have driven the innovation of sensors in the medical field. Such continual development has made sensors progress in the direction of safety, flexibility, and intelligence for continuous monitoring of vital signs, which holds considerable promise for changing the way humans live and even treat diseases. To this end, flexible wearable devices with high performance, such as high sensitivity, high stability, and excellent biodegradability, have attracted strong interest from scientists. Herein, a review of flexible wearable sensors for temperature, heart rate, human motion, respiratory rate, glucose, and pH is highlighted. In addition, engineering issues are also presented, focusing on material selection, sensor fabrication, and power supply. Finally, potential challenges facing current technology and future directions of wearable sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:With the popularization of intelligent sensing and the improvement of modern medical technology, intelligent medical sensing technology has emerged as the times require. This technology combines basic disciplines such as physics, mathematics, and materials with modern technologies such as semiconductors, integrated circuits, and artificial intelligence, and has become one of the most promising in the medical field. The core of intelligent medical sensor technology is to make existing medical sensors intelligent, portable, and wearable with full consideration of ergonomics and sensor power consumption issues in order to conform to the current trends in cloud medicine, personalized medicine, and health monitoring. With the development of automation and intelligence in measurement and control systems, it is required that sensors have high accuracy, reliability, and stability, as well as certain data processing capabilities, self-checking, self-calibration, and self-compensation, while traditional medical sensors cannot meet such requirements. In addition, to manufacture high-performance sensors, it is also difficult to improve the material process alone, and it is necessary to combine computer technology with sensor technology to make up for its performance shortcomings. Intelligent medical sensing technology combines medical sensors with microprocessors to produce powerful intelligent medical sensors. Based on the original sensor functions, intelligent medical sensors also have functions such as self-compensation, self-calibration, self-diagnosis, numerical processing, two-way communication, information storage, and digital output. This review focuses on the application of intelligent medical sensing technology in biomedical sensing detection from three aspects: physical sensor, chemical sensor, and biosensor.

Abstract:The introduction of sensor technology in our daily lives has brought comfort, convenience, and improved health over the past few decades. Technological advances further expanded the use of medical sensors by reducing their size and costs. Medical sensors improve the intelligence and capabilities of healthcare services including, remote health monitoring, surgical procedures, therapy, and rehabilitation. We present a comprehensive review of medical sensors in the last 50 years focusing on their deployment in healthcare applications. The review also discusses the role of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in enhancing the capabilities of sensor technologies for the healthcare domain. Moreover, we also investigate the benefits and challenges of various integrated architectures which have been proposed recently to seamlessly integrate heterogeneous medical sensors with emerging technologies and paradigms that include edge, Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), fog, and cloud computing technologies. Finally, we identify future challenges that must be addressed to achieve the maximum potential and benefits of medical sensor technologies and ultimately provide robust, scalable, reliable, and cost-effective healthcare delivery.

This study presents advancements in sensor development, fabrication techniques, and user‐friendly protocols.
