Abstract:Advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, functional nanomaterials, and micro/nano manufacturing have been made in recent years. These advances have accelerated the development of wearable sensors. Wearable sensors, with excellent flexibility, stretchability, durability, and sensitivity, have attractive application prospects in the next generation of personal devices for chronic disease care. Flexible and stretchable wearable sensors play an important role in endowing chronic disease care systems with the capability of long-term and real-time tracking of biomedical signals. These signals are closely associated with human body chronic conditions, such as heart rate, wrist/neck pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and biofluids information. Monitoring these signals with wearable sensors provides a convenient and non-invasive way for chronic disease diagnoses and health monitoring. In this review, the applications of wearable sensors in chronic disease care are introduced. In addition, this review exploits a comprehensive investigation of requirements for flexibility and stretchability, and methods of nano-based enhancement. Furthermore, recent progress in wearable sensors-including pressure, strain, electrophysiological, electrochemical, temperature, and multifunctional sensors-is presented. Finally, opening research challenges and future directions of flexible and stretchable sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Wearable health monitoring systems have gained considerable interest in recent years owing to their tremendous promise for personal portable health watching and remote medical practices. The sensors with excellent flexibility and stretchability are crucial components that can provide health monitoring systems with the capability of continuously tracking physiological signals of human body without conspicuous uncomfortableness and invasiveness. The signals acquired by these sensors, such as body motion, heart rate, breath, skin temperature and metabolism parameter, are closely associated with personal health conditions. This review attempts to summarize the recent progress in flexible and stretchable sensors, concerning the detected health indicators, sensing mechanisms, functional materials, fabrication strategies, basic and desired features. The potential challenges and future perspectives of wearable health monitoring system are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases account for the highest mortality globally, but recent advances in wearable technologies may potentially change how these illnesses are diagnosed and managed. In particular, continuous monitoring of cardiovascular vital signs for early intervention is highly desired. To this end, flexible wearable sensors that can be comfortably worn over long durations are gaining significant attention. In this review, advanced flexible wearable sensors for monitoring cardiovascular vital signals are outlined and discussed. Specifically, the functional materials, configurations, mechanisms, and recent advances of these flexible sensors for heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and blood glucose monitoring are highlighted. Different mechanisms in bioelectric, mechano‐electric, optoelectric, and ultrasonic wearable sensors are presented to monitor cardiovascular vital signs from different body locations. Present challenges, possible strategies, and future directions of these wearable sensors are also discussed. With rapid development, these flexible wearable sensors will potentially be applicable for both medical diagnosis and daily healthcare use in tackling cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:Advances in wireless technologies, low-power electronics, the internet of things, and in the domain of connected health are driving innovations in wearable medical devices at a tremendous pace. Wearable sensor systems composed of flexible and stretchable materials have the potential to better interface to the human skin, whereas silicon-based electronics are extremely efficient in sensor data processing and transmission. Therefore, flexible and stretchable sensors combined with low-power silicon-based electronics are a viable and efficient approach for medical monitoring. Flexible medical devices designed for monitoring human vital signs, such as body temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, pulse oxygenation, and blood glucose have applications in both fitness monitoring and medical diagnostics. As a review of the latest development in flexible and wearable human vitals sensors, the essential components required for vitals sensors are outlined and discussed here, including the reported sensor systems, sensing mechanisms, sensor fabrication, power, and data processing requirements.

Abstract:Flexible wearable sensors with good biocompatibility, breathability, flexibility, sensibility, accuracy and durability show great prospects in early prevention, intervention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The devices can utilize piezoelectric, piezoresistive, triboelectric, capacitive or magnetoelastic effects for blood pressure monitoring, thermoelectric, photothermal or pyroelectric effects for temperature monitoring, and electrocatalytic, electrochemical or photoelectrochemical mechanisms for glucose monitoring. Profited from the rapid development of flexible skin‐like electronic materials and artificial intelligent technology, remarkable achievements have been witnessed in wearable health monitoring devices in recent years. The wearable intelligent systems featured with tailored structures and compositions as well as enriched functions enable human beings to access to next‐generation closed‐loop platform for early disease prevention and diagnosis. In this context, this mini‐review focuses on the recent progress and applications of flexible wearable intelligent health monitoring devices. Specifically, the basic sensing mechanisms and corresponding property requirements for wearable healthcare devices are examined firstly. Secondly, the versatile applications of advanced wearable devices for detecting temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and glucose are scrutinized exclusively. Finally, a brief summary is presented accompanying with future outlook in terms of material preparation, mechanism development and integration design of monitoring systems. This manuscript is expected to provide critical guidelines to those working in skin‐like electronics, flexible sensors, wearable intelligent devices, health monitoring and other related disciplines, especially for the beginners.

Abstract:<p>Wearable electronics have revolutionized the way physiological parameters are sensed, detected, and monitored. In recent years, advances in flexible and stretchable hybrid electronics have created emergent properties that enhance the compliance of devices to our skin. With their unobtrusive attributes, skin conformable sensors enable applications toward real‐time disease diagnosis and continuous healthcare monitoring. Herein, critical perspectives of flexible hybrid electronics toward the future of digital health monitoring are provided, emphasizing its role in physiological sensing. In particular, the strategies within the sensor composition to render flexibility and stretchability while maintaining excellent sensing performance are considered. Next, novel approaches to the functionalization of the sensor for physical or biochemical stimuli are extensively covered. Subsequently, wearable sensors measuring physical parameters such as strain, pressure, temperature, as well as biological changes in metabolites and electrolytes are reported. Finally, their implications toward early disease detection and monitoring are discussed, concluding with a future perspective into the challenges and opportunities in emerging wearable sensor designs for the next few years.</p>

Abstract:Wearable biosensors have attracted considerable attention because of their potential use in real-time monitoring and personalized disease diagnosis. The good deformability and stretchability of flexible electronics enable the elimination of expensive and bulky detection instruments, combination of diagnosis and treatment strategies, modification of traditional clinical practice involving invasive detection methods, and creation of a new platform for personalized wearable medical devices. Using a combination of flexible devices, new sensing mechanisms, and structural design methodologies, continuous physiological health checks can be realized under the premise of noninvasivess; moreover, physiological information obtained from the human body can be transformed into intuitive data and medical staff can realize predictive and objective disease diagnosis. Most of the present reviews have focused on introducing the material composition of flexible sensors. In this study, we initially focus on electronic sensing and subsequently focus on the electronic technology itself. Then, the latest developments associated with flexible and wearable sensing devices are discussed and the sensing of continuous monitoring Is summarized. The mechanism, system structure, typical applications, current challenges, and possible future development associated with the usage of biosensors are presented.

Abstract:Abstract With the increasing awareness of personal health management in recent decades, various types of flexible and wearable body sensors have been developed. Thanks to the superiority of advanced wearable technologies, including miniaturization, portability, stretchability, comfort, intelligent human-machine interface, etc, flexible and wearable body sensors hold great promise for next generation biomedicine and healthcare applications. Unfortunately, the data precision, response speed, sensitivity and selectivity, durability, compatibility with flexible substrates, and preparation techniques still need to be enhanced and refined to meet the requirements of clinical evaluations or even commercialization. According to working principles, flexible and wearable sensing platforms can be roughly divided into four categories: physical sensors, chemical sensors, biosensors, and the combination of different types of sensors. Here, a brief review focused on the recent developments of these flexible and wearable sensors applied especially to biomedicine and healthcare is presented. In addition, the existing challenges and potential opportunities ahead in flexible and wearable sensor technologies are discussed. Finally, an outlook of wearable sensing platforms in biomedicine and healthcare is proposed. We hope this review can provide guidance for superior flexible and wearable sensing technologies in the future and can provide an outlook for commercial wearable sensors.

Abstract:Flexible wearable devices have been widely used in biomedical applications, the Internet of Things, and other fields, attracting the attention of many researchers. The physiological and biochemical information on the human body reflects various health states, providing essential data for human health examination and personalized medical treatment. Meanwhile, physiological and biochemical information reveals the moving state and position of the human body, and it is the data basis for realizing human–computer interactions. Flexible wearable physiological and biochemical sensors provide real-time, human-friendly monitoring because of their light weight, wearability, and high flexibility. This paper reviews the latest advancements, strategies, and technologies of flexibly wearable physiological and biochemical sensors (pressure, strain, humidity, saliva, sweat, and tears). Next, we systematically summarize the integration principles of flexible physiological and biochemical sensors with the current research progress. Finally, important directions and challenges of physiological, biochemical, and multimodal sensors are proposed to realize their potential applications for human movement, health monitoring, and personalized medicine.

Abstract:With the development of flexible electronic materials, as well as the wide development and application of smartphones, the cloud, and wireless systems, flexible wearable sensor technology has a significant and far-reaching impact on the realization of personalized medical care and the reform of the consumer market in the future. However, due to the high requirements for accuracy, reliability, low power consumption, and less data error, the development of these potential areas is full of challenges. In order to solve these problems, this review mainly searches the literature from 2008 to May 2020, based on the PRISMA process. Based on them, this paper reviews the latest research progress of new flexible materials and different types of sensors for monitoring vital signs (including electrophysiological signals, body temperature, and respiratory frequency) in recent years. These materials and sensors can help realize accurate signal detection based on comfortable and sustainable observation, and may likely be applied to future daily clothing.

Abstract:The application potential of wearable electronics in the healthcare field has been of great interest over the past several decades. Flexible and wearable devices based on skin-friendly soft elastic materials can be snugly attached to the surface of human skin, so that a series of vital health information such as wrist pulse, body temperature, and blood glucose can be extracted and analyzed to help the patient maintain physical fitness. Here, we outlined the most common types of wearable electronics for monitoring human health information, including force sensors, temperature sensors, physiological biochemical sensors, and multifunctional sensors. Their general working principles and structural innovations are reviewed. Then, we discussed two functional modules that make the wearable sensors more applicable in real life—self-powered module and signal processing module. The challenges and future research directions are also proposed to develop wearable electronics for monitoring human health information.

Abstract:With the development of cross-fertilisation in various disciplines, flexible wearable sensing technologies have emerged, bringing together many disciplines, such as biomedicine, materials science, control science, and communication technology. Over the past few years, the development of multiple types of flexible wearable devices that are widely used for the detection of human physiological signals has proven that flexible wearable devices have strong biocompatibility and a great potential for further development. These include electronic skin patches, soft robots, bio-batteries, and personalised medical devices. In this review, we present an updated overview of emerging flexible wearable sensor devices for biomedical applications and a comprehensive summary of the research progress and potential of flexible sensors. First, we describe the selection and fabrication of flexible materials and their excellent electrochemical properties. We evaluate the mechanisms by which these sensor devices work, and then we categorise and compare the unique advantages of a variety of sensor devices from the perspective of in vitro and in vivo sensing, as well as some exciting applications in the human body. Finally, we summarise the opportunities and challenges in the field of flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors are widely employed for the detection of substance concentrations owing to their rapid response, high sensitivity, remarkable selectivity, and ease of quantification. With the rapid advancements in flexible electronics technology, electrochemical sensors have been transitioned into flexible and wearable formats, facilitating the in-situ analysis of biological liquids or gases. This breakthrough has opened avenues for portable, noninvasive continuous monitoring of physiological parameters and health status, thereby unveiling vast potential in the realm of intelligent healthcare and medical applications. Building upon these remarkable progressions, this paper primarily focuses on the design and applications of flexible electrochemical sensors tailored specifically for noninvasive medical detection. Firstly, the basic components of flexible electrochemical sensors are elucidated. Subsequently, the working principles of various types of sensors are expounded upon. Furthermore, we systematically review the latest advancements in the detection of pivotal chemical substances in typical biofluids such as sweat, interstitial fluid, tears, saliva, and breath, using flexible electrochemical sensors. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of flexible electrochemical sensors for applications in noninvasive health monitoring and precision medicine are discussed and proposed.

Abstract:Emerging classes of flexible electronic sensors as alternatives to conventional rigid sensors offer a powerful set of capabilities for detecting and quantifying physiological and physical signals from human skin in personal healthcare. Unfortunately, the practical applications and commercialization of flexible sensors are generally limited by certain unsatisfactory aspects of their performance, such as biocompatibility, low sensing range, power supply, or single sensory function. This review intends to provide up-to-date literature on wearable devices for smart healthcare. A systematic review is provided, from sensors based on nanomaterials and nanostructures, algorithms, to multifunctional integrated devices with stretchability, self-powered performance, and biocompatibility. Typical electromechanical sensors are investigated with a specific focus on the strategies for constructing high-performance sensors based on nanomaterials and nanostructures. Then, the review emphasizes the importance of tailoring the fabrication techniques in order to improve stretchability, biocompatibility, and self-powered performance. The construction of wearable devices with high integration, high performance, and multi-functionalization for multiparameter healthcare is discussed in depth. Integrating wearable devices with appropriate machine learning algorithms is summarized. After interpretation of the algorithms, intelligent predictions are produced to give instructions or predictions for smart implementations. It is desired that this review will offer guidance for future excellence in flexible wearable sensing technologies and provide insight into commercial wearable sensors.

Abstract:Traditional public health systems suffer from incomprehensive, delayed, and inefficient medical services. Convenient and comprehensive health monitoring has been highly sought after recently. Flexible and wearable devices are attracting wide attention due to their potential applications in wearable human health monitoring and care systems. Using carbon materials with overall superiorities can facilitate the development of wearable and flexible devices with various functions and excellent performance, which can comprehensively and real-time monitor human health status and prevent diseases. Herein, the latest advances in the rational design and controlled fabrication of carbon materials for applications in health-related flexible and wearable electronics are reviewed. The fabrication strategies, working mechanism, performance, and applications in health monitoring of carbon-based flexible devices, including electromechanical sensors, temperature/humidity sensors, chemical sensors, and flexible conductive wires/electrodes, are reviewed. Furthermore, integrating multiple carbon-based devices into multifunctional wearable systems is discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and future opportunities in this field are also proposed.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of flexible sensors has revolutionized the medical field. Considering the urgent need for high‐performance and multifunctional sensors in wearable devices and health monitoring, the mechanisms and latest research in flexible pressure, humidity, and temperature sensors are reviewed comprehensively, focusing on their health monitoring applications. The latest advancements and challenges for multifunctional sensors are also discussed. The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, micro‐nano manufacturing, and flexible electronics technology have unleashed unprecedented innovation and opportunities for applying flexible sensors in healthcare, wearable devices, and human–computer interaction. The human body's tactile perception involves physical parameters such as pressure, temperature, and humidity, all of which play an essential role in maintaining human health. Inspired by the sensory function of human skin, many bionic sensors have been developed to simulate human skin's perception to various stimuli and are widely applied in health monitoring. Given the urgent requirements for sensing performance and integration of flexible sensors in the field of wearable devices and health monitoring, here is a timely overview of recent advances in pressure, humidity, temperature, and multi‐functional sensors for human health monitoring. It covers the fundamental components of flexible sensors and categorizes them based on different response mechanisms, including resistive, capacitive, voltage, and other types. Specifically, the application of these flexible tactile sensors in the area of human health monitoring is highlighted. Based on this, an extended overview of recent advances in dual/triple‐mode flexible sensors integrating pressure, humidity, and temperature tactile sensing is presented. Abstract:The rapid development of flexible electronics, human–computer interaction, wireless technology, the Internet of Things, and internet health is promoting fast-past innovation in the field of wearable medical devices. Wearable devices are a category of personalized devices that include specialized sensors, which can make conformal contact with the human body or tissue to collect biochemical or electrophysiological signals. Hence, the development of high-precision flexible devices is attracting increasing interest as they can provide real-time medical data for monitoring the physiological state of patients and their diagnosis and treatment, as well as help individuals to pursue a healthier lifestyle. This Perspective reviews the developments and requirements of wearable flexible electronic devices in medical monitoring and then discusses the possible applications and challenges of using flexible sensor technology for point-of-care devices. Finally, an up-to-date discussion of the flexible sensor, its future prospects, and solutions it could provide in medical and diagnostic equipment are summarized.

Biocompatible Material‐Based Flexible Biosensors: From Materials Design to Wearable/Implantable Devices and Integrated Sensing Systems

Abstract:Flexible biosensors (pressure, optical, temperature, and electrochemical sensors) prepared from various biocompatible materials have the capability to monitor physiological signals such as heart rate, temperature, and body fluid markers. Sophisticated wearable/implantable sensors and systems for optimizing every aspect of the personal health and performance can be achieved through rational design of functional material and device architecture, as well as the use of advanced processing/integration approaches. Human beings have a greater need to pursue life and manage personal or family health in the context of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and 5G/6G technologies. The application of micro biosensing devices is crucial in connecting technology and personalized medicine. Here, the progress and current status from biocompatible inorganic materials to organic materials and composites are reviewed and the material‐to‐device processing is described. Next, the operating principles of pressure, chemical, optical, and temperature sensors are dissected and the application of these flexible biosensors in wearable/implantable devices is discussed. Different biosensing systems acting in vivo and in vitro, including signal communication and energy supply are then illustrated. The potential of in‐sensor computing for applications in sensing systems is also discussed. Finally, some essential needs for commercial translation are highlighted and future opportunities for flexible biosensors are considered.
