Abstract:The continuous pursuit for a better quality of life promotes continuous advancements in intelligent technology.Flexible wearable and implantable bioelectronics have emerged as an innovative complement to rigid material-based electronic devices[1-3].Due to their distinct advantages in terms of ductile,ultrathin,and biocompatible features,these elastic and soft bioelectronic devices can be seamlessly mounted onto various real or artificial tissues and organs.They offer numerous applications in continuous health monitoring[4,5],human-machine interfaces[6-8],and therapeutic inter-ventions[9-11].These devices can dynamically track their surroundings,effectively bridging the gap among humans,machines,and real or virtual spaces.Typically,these devices monitor physical,chemical,and electrophysiological infor-mation based on piezoresistive,capacitive,piezoelectric,or triboelectric principles.To construct these high-performance multifunctional bioelectronic devices,diverse processing methods combined with emerging versatile functional mate-rials have been developed,enabling the formation of active components,interconnections,and hierarchical structures[12,13].

Emerging flexible and wearable physical sensing devices create huge potential for many vital healthcare and biomedical applications including artificial electronic skins, physiological monitoring and assessment systems, therapeutic and drug delivery platforms, etc. Monitoring of vital physiological parameters in hospital and/or home environments has been of tremendous interests to healthcare practitioners for a long time. Robust and reliable sensors with excellent flexibility and stretchability are essential in the development of pervasive health monitoring systems with the capability of continuously tracking physiological signals of human body without conspicuous discomfort and invasiveness.

Abstract:Skin‐inspired wearable devices hold great potentials in the next generation of smart portable electronics owing to their intriguing applications in healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces. Despite tremendous research efforts dedicated to judiciously tailoring wearable devices in terms of their thickness, portability, flexibility, bendability as well as stretchability, the emerging Internet of Things demand the skin‐interfaced flexible systems to be endowed with additional functionalities with the capability of mimicking skin‐like perception and beyond. This review covers and highlights the latest advances of burgeoning multifunctional wearable electronics, primarily including versatile multimodal sensor systems, self‐healing material‐based devices, and self‐powered flexible sensors. To render the penetration of human‐interactive devices into global markets and households, economical manufacturing techniques are crucial to achieve large‐scale flexible systems with high‐throughput capability. The booming innovations in this research field will push the scientific community forward and benefit human beings in the near future.

Abstract:Soft wearable and implantable electronic systems have attracted tremendous attention due to their flexibility, conformability, and biocompatibility. Such favorable features are critical for reliably monitoring key biomedical and physiological information (including both biophysical and biochemical signals) and effective treatment and management of specific chronic diseases. Miniaturized, fully integrated self-powered bioelectronic devices that can harvest energy from the human body represent promising and emerging solutions for long-term, intimate, and personalized therapies. In this Perspective, we offer a brief overview of recent advances in wearable/implantable soft electronic devices and their therapeutic applications ranging from drug delivery to tissue regeneration. We also discuss the key opportunities, challenges, and future directions in this important area needed to fulfill the vision of personalized medicine.

Abstract:<p>Recent advances in soft, flexible, and stretchable sensors have offered a good opportunity to design various types of wearable flexible medical devices for achievement of continuous health monitoring, preventive medicine and robot feedback and control. The integration of biofunctionability with electronic skin is undoubtedly an attractive prospect in the sense that the successful medical device requires good biocompatibility, sensing capability, and high degrees of mechanical flexibility. This work summarizes the last developments in electronic skin for next‐generation medical devices that can simultaneously detect a variety of physiological information of the human body. The key properties of e‐skin that must be realized for their versatile use in medical applications are discussed in detail. Next, the paper outlines the overall applications of these sensors in wearable medicine, implantable medicine, and interventional medicine, and emphasizes how these devices monitor human health status and may be expected to replace traditional clinical tools. Finally, the challenges and future research opportunities in the field of wearable health monitoring are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Mechanical signals such as pressure and strain reflect important psychological and physiological states of the human body. Body-integrated sensors, including skin-mounted and surgically implanted ones, allow personalized health monitoring for the general population as well as patients. However, the development of such measuring devices has been hindered by the strict requirements for human-biocompatible materials and the need for high performance sensors; most existing devices or sensors do not meet all the desired specifications. Here, a set of flexible, stretchable, wearable, implantable, and degradable mechanical sensors is reported with excellent mechanical robustness and compliance, outstanding biocompatibility, remotely-triggered degradation, and excellent sensing performance, using a conductive silk fibroin hydrogel (CSFH). They can detect multiple mechanical signals such as pressure, strain, and bending angles. Moreover, combined with a drug-loaded silk-based microneedle array, sensor-equipped devices are shown to be effective for real-time monitoring and in situ treatment of epilepsy in a rodent model. These sensors offer potential applications in custom health monitoring wearables, and in situ treatment of chronic clinical disorders.

Abstract:Multifunctional wearable sensors and systems are of growing interest over the past decades because of real-time health monitoring and disease diagnosis capability. Owing to the tremendous efforts of scientists, wearable sensors and systems with attractive advantages such as flexibility, comfort, and long-term stability have been developed, which are widely used in temperature monitoring, pulse wave detection, gait pattern analysis, etc. Due to the complexity of human physiological signals, it is necessary to measure multiple physiological information simultaneously to evaluate human health comprehensively. This review summarizes the recent advances in multifunctional wearable sensors, including single sensors with various functions, planar integrated sensors, three-dimensional assembled sensors, and stacked integrated sensors. The design strategy, manufacturing method, and potential application of each type of sensor are discussed. Finally, we offer an outlook on future developments and provide perspectives on the remaining challenges and opportunities of wearable multifunctional sensing technology.

Abstract:Biomechanical signals, such as strain variations of the skin, vibrations of the chest and throat, as well as motions of the limbs, hold immense significance in healthcare monitoring, disease diagnosis, and human-machine interface. Examples span from monitoring blood pressure and pulse waves for atherosclerosis diagnosis, to distinguishing between metatarsalgia patients and healthy individuals by tracking their walking postures, and to voiceprint recognition and hearing aid technology based on vibration sensing. Wearable biomechanical sensors play a crucial role in providing valuable insights into one's health condition and physiological features. However, the development of high-performance sensors capable of prolonged monitoring poses challenges. Traditional batteries have limited lifespan and pose difficulty in replacement. Using self-powered devices for the measurement of biomechanical signals represents an attractive solution to tackle the issues caused by batteries. This review focuses on the mechanisms of wearable self-powered biomechanical sensors, and delves into recent advancements in their applications, covering areas of cardiovascular system monitoring, acoustic signals detection, human motion tracking, and many others associated with biomechanics. A concluding section outlines the potential future prospects in this evolving field of materials and biomedical research. This article reviews the latest progress in wearable self-powered biomechanical sensors. Based on piezoelectric, electrostatic, and electromagnetic effects, these sensors find their potential in various applications, such as cardiovascular system monitoring, acoustic signals detection, human motion tracking, and other biomedical scenarios. Challenges in this realm lie in the development of self-powered sensors with high output performances, compatible bio-interfaces, and multi-directional sensing capabilities. image

Abstract:With the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, it is imperative that medical monitoring and treatment become more instantaneous and comfortable for patients. Recently, wearable and implantable optoelectronic devices can be seamlessly integrated into human body to enable physiological monitoring and treatment in an imperceptible and spatiotemporally unconstrained manner, opening countless possibilities for the intelligent healthcare paradigm. To achieve biointegrated cardiac healthcare, researchers have focused on novel strategies for the construction of flexible/stretchable optoelectronic devices and systems. Here, we overview the progress of biointegrated flexible and stretchable optoelectronics for wearable and implantable cardiac healthcare devices. Firstly, the device design is addressed, including the mechanical design, interface adhesion, and encapsulation strategies. Next, the practical applications of optoelectronic devices for cardiac physiological monitoring, cardiac optogenetics, and nongenetic stimulation are presented. Finally, an outlook on biointegrated flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices and systems for intelligent cardiac healthcare is discussed.

Abstract:Bioreceptor‐based wearable electrochemical sensors have opened new avenues for on‐body and continuous molecular detections, enabling personalized and preventive healthcare. This review summarises recent innovations and applications of those wearable biosensing systems in detecting a variety of biochemical markers, such as small molecules, hormones, drugs, and macromolecules, in biofluids including interstitial fluid, sweat, wound exudate, saliva, and tears. Recent advancements in wearable electrochemical biosensors have opened new avenues for on‐body and continuous detection of biomarkers, enabling personalized, real‐time, and preventive healthcare. While glucose monitoring has set a precedent for wearable biosensors, the field is rapidly expanding to include a wider range of analytes crucial for disease diagnosis, treatment, and management. In this review, recent key innovations are examined in the design and manufacturing underpinning these biosensing platforms including biorecognition elements, signal transduction methods, electrode and substrate materials, and fabrication techniques. The applications of these biosensors are then highlighted in detecting a variety of biochemical markers, such as small molecules, hormones, drugs, and macromolecules, in biofluids including interstitial fluid, sweat, wound exudate, saliva, and tears. Additionally, the review also covers recent advances in wearable electrochemical biosensing platforms, such as multi‐sensory integration, closed‐loop control, and power supply. Furthermore, the challenges associated with critical issues are discussed, such as biocompatibility, biofouling, and sensor degradation, and the opportunities in materials science, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence to overcome these limitations.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors combine the benefits of noninvasive sweat sampling and wearable real-time measurement, providing a powerful platform for monitoring a wealth of biochemical components of sweat related to physiological conditions. The recent progress of wearable sweat sensors is attributed to the rapid development of interdisciplinary research among material science, manufacturing technology, and advanced electronics field. This review focuses on the construction of wearable sweat sensors, especially the design of a flexible sensing interface and integrated wearable sweat sensor. In addition, we outline the extensive applications of wearable sweat sensors from healthcare and sports monitoring to biofuel cells. Finally, several issues and opportunities of future wearable sweat sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Human body with curved and soft interfaces requests advanced flexible materials and structures for the interaction with organs and signal collection from targets in applications such as bioengineering and diagnostic devices.Among them,it is highly demanded to achieve creative design in flexible materials and structures with great stretchable capability for required applications.To this end,both inorganic and organic materials could be adopted and designed with assembly and self-assembly methods for flexible electronics and electrodes.Soft or flexible materials and structures inspired by nature can lead to highly conformal contacts between devices and the human body.These approaches hold great potential for applications in flexible electronics,medical imaging technology and portable disease diagnostics.Novel strategy on related sensors/actuator and energy storage/generation devices could overcome certain limitations on flexible materials engineering and thus advance the field as well.All these methods would deliver a profound impact to our future intelligent society.
