Abstract:Human body with curved and soft interfaces requests advanced flexible materials and structures for the interaction with organs and signal collection from targets in applications such as bioengineering and diagnostic devices.Among them,it is highly demanded to achieve creative design in flexible materials and structures with great stretchable capability for required applications.To this end,both inorganic and organic materials could be adopted and designed with assembly and self-assembly methods for flexible electronics and electrodes.Soft or flexible materials and structures inspired by nature can lead to highly conformal contacts between devices and the human body.These approaches hold great potential for applications in flexible electronics,medical imaging technology and portable disease diagnostics.Novel strategy on related sensors/actuator and energy storage/generation devices could overcome certain limitations on flexible materials engineering and thus advance the field as well.All these methods would deliver a profound impact to our future intelligent society.

Abstract:High-performance wearable sensors that detect complex, multidimensional signals are indispensable in practical applications. Most existing sensors can only detect axial deformations or single stimuli, dramatically limiting their application fields. In this study, anisotropic strain and deformation-insensitive pressure sensors were effectively constructed based on a rigid-flexible synergistic stretchable substrate. Furthermore, we developed a three-dimensional integrated sensor with highly directional selective sensing through reasonable design and assembly. This integrated sensor recognizes the amplitude and direction of strain in the plane with a maximum gauge factor of 635 and an unprecedented selectivity of 13.99. Additionally, this device can also monitor the pressure outside the plane with a sensitivity of 0.277 kPa−1. We further investigated the working mechanism of sensor anisotropy and confirmed the application of the sensor in detecting complex multifreedom human joint movements. This research discovery provides new ideas and methods for developing multidimensional sensors, which is essential for broadening the application field of wearable electronic products.

Abstract:AbstractThe fabrication of flexible sensors is a potential way to promote the progress of modern social science and technology due to their wide applications in high‐performance electronic equipment and devices. Flexible sensors based on organic materials combine the unique advantages of flexibility and low cost, increasing interest in healthcare monitoring, treatment, and human–machine interfaces. Advances in materials science and biotechnology have rapidly accelerated the development of bio‐integrated multifunctional sensors and devices. Due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties, many types of functional materials provided benefits for the construction of various sensors with improved flexibility and stretchability. In this review, recent advance in the fabrication of flexible sensors by using functional nanomaterials including nanoparticles, carbon materials, metal‐organic materials, and polymers is presented. In addition, the potential biomedical applications of the fabricated flexible sensors for detecting gas molecules signals, small molecules, DNA/RNA, proteins, others are introduced and discussed.

Abstract:As an important branch of flexible electronics, flexible pressure sensors that combine unique advantages including light weight, flexibility, and low‐cost, have drawn extensive attention owing to their great potential for biomedical applications. In this review, the current state‐of‐the‐art flexible pressure sensors concerning common substrate and active materials, sensing mechanism, key parameters, sensitivity optimization strategies, and promising biomedical applications from ex vivo to in vivo and which results in the distinct requirements of materials and structure design is briefly reviewed. Finally, perspectives on the potential challenges of flexible pressure sensors are provided.

Abstract:In recent years, the emergence of low-dimensional carbon-based materials, such as carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, together with the advances in materials science, have greatly enriched the variety of flexible and stretchable electronic devices. Compared with conventional rigid devices, these soft robotic sensors and actuators exhibit remarkable advantages in terms of their biocompatibility, portability, power efficiency, and wearability, thus creating myriad possibilities of novel wearable and implantable tactile sensors, as well as micro-/nano-soft actuation systems. Interestingly, not only are carbon-based materials ideal constituents for photodetectors, gas, thermal, triboelectric sensors due to their geometry and extraordinary sensitivity to various external stimuli, but they also provide significantly more precise manipulation of the actuators than conventional centimeter-scale pneumatic and hydraulic robotic actuators, at a molecular level. In this review, we summarize recent progress on state-of-the-art flexible and stretchable carbon-based sensors and actuators that have creatively added to the development of biomedicine, nanoscience, materials science, as well as soft robotics. In the end, we propose the future potential of carbon-based materials for biomedical and soft robotic applications.

Abstract:The burgeoning market for flexible pressure sensors has been invigorated by their enhanced performance and wearability, paving the way for innovative applications in wearable electronics and biomedical devices. In this domain, biomaterials have risen as a cornerstone, offering a unique blend of biological richness, biocompatibility, degradability, and eco-friendliness. This review introduces the pivotal role of biomaterials in the advancement of flexible pressure sensors over the past five years. It expounds on the various methods of integrating biomaterials into sensors, discussing the corresponding biological properties that underpin their functionality. Furthermore, the review covers various biomimetic structures designed to optimize sensor performance, enhancing their sensitivity, stability, and durability. Adopting a comprehensive perspective, this paper provides valuable insights and potential solutions to the challenges and limitations currently faced in sensor research. Through a detailed analysis of empirical evidence, we aim to guide and motivate future technological and scientific advancements in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:Abstract The flexible physical sensors have the advantage of good flexibility and ductility and can be freely bent or even folded. The development of flexibility from rigidity has significantly increased the application situations for sensors, especially in intelligent robots, tactile platforms, wearable medical sensors, bionic devices, and other fields. The research of membrane-based flexible physical sensors relies on the development of advanced materials and technologies, which have been derived from a wide range of applications. Various technical methods and principles have gradually matured according to the different applications and materials used. This review begins with a discussion of membrane substrates and functional materials, summarizing the development of flexible physical sensors. According to the technical sensing principles, this review focuses on research progress on physical sensing platforms. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for the design of emerging membrane-based flexible physical sensors in the coming years are presented.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have received extensive attention in human–machine interactions, robotics, and health monitoring. The use of multifunctional sensors that are capable of measuring a variety of mechanical or environmental stimuli can provide new functionalities for wearable electronics. Advancements in material science and system integration technologies have contributed to the development of high-performance flexible multifunctional sensors. This review presents the main approaches, based on functional materials and device structures, to improve sensing parameters, including linearity, detection range, and sensitivity to various stimuli. The details of electrical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of self-powered sensors and wearable wireless systems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the current challenges and future developmental directions are discussed to offer a guide to fabricate advanced multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Biomaterials have gained increasing attention in the fabrication of a variety of flexible electronics due to their tunable solubility, robust mechanical property, multi-active binding sites, and excellent biocompatible and biodegradable characterization as well. Here, we review the recent progress of bio-based materials in flexible sensors, mainly describe nature biomaterials (silk fibroin, cellulose and chitin) and chemical-synthesized biomaterials as well as their applications in health monitors, biosensor, human-machine interactions (HMIs) and more, and highlight the current opportunities and challenges that lay ahead in mounting numbers of academia and industry. Furthermore, we expect this review could contribute to unveiling the potentials of developing outstanding and eco-friendly sensors with biomaterials by utilization of printing techniques.
Flexible Pressure Sensors Tuned by Interface Structure Design – Numerical and Experimental Study

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have aroused wide research interest because they can be conformably attached to various irregular surfaces. At the present, it is still challenge to adjust the sensitivity and response range of resistive pressure sensors for practical uses. To uncover the insights of sensing ability, the surface textures are designed with pyramids of different sizes and density distributions for finite element analyses and experimental studies. The results show that the initial contact area has substantial effects on the sensitivity while the structure dimensions are proportional to the ability of sensing range. Using these design strategies, the sensor with the highest sensitivity (18.4 kPa-1) is constructed by the structures with gradient height distribution crossing the sensing area. The obtained sensitivity is among the highest performed resistive pressure sensors in the category. The sensitivity and response range of the sensor can be adjusted by changing the density and size of the pyra-mids. In addition, the flexible sensor based on PDMS elastomer and MWCNTs/PDMS conductor also reacts fast (less than 200 ms) when sensed a pressure change. Furthermore, the flexible resistive pressure sensors are highly reproducible and stable through the 5000 cycles repeated pressure stress without the sign of degradation. In application front, the sensors can quickly and accurately identify tactile signals and haptic signals at different frequencies under different pressures. The pressure sensors applied this design strategy are suitable for wearable electronics in human health care with the biocompatible materials with the flexible and comfortable natures.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have revolutionized the way physiological parameters are sensed, detected, and monitored. In recent years, advances in flexible and stretchable hybrid electronics have created emergent properties that enhance the compliance of devices to our skin. With their unobtrusive attributes, skin conformable sensors enable applications toward real‐time disease diagnosis and continuous healthcare monitoring. Herein, critical perspectives of flexible hybrid electronics toward the future of digital health monitoring are provided, emphasizing its role in physiological sensing. In particular, the strategies within the sensor composition to render flexibility and stretchability while maintaining excellent sensing performance are considered. Next, novel approaches to the functionalization of the sensor for physical or biochemical stimuli are extensively covered. Subsequently, wearable sensors measuring physical parameters such as strain, pressure, temperature, as well as biological changes in metabolites and electrolytes are reported. Finally, their implications toward early disease detection and monitoring are discussed, concluding with a future perspective into the challenges and opportunities in emerging wearable sensor designs for the next few years.

Abstract:With the recent great progress made in flexible and wearable electronic materials, the upcoming next generation of skin-mountable and implantable smart devices holds extensive potential applications for the lifestyle modifying, including personalized health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, soft robots, and implantable biomedical devices. As a core member within the wearable electronics family, flexible strain sensors play an essential role in the structure design and functional optimization. To further enhance the stretchability, flexibility, sensitivity, and electricity performances of the flexible strain sensors, enormous efforts have been done covering the materials design, manufacturing approaches and various applications. Thus, this review summarizes the latest advances in flexible strain sensors over recent years from the material, application, and manufacturing strategies. Firstly, the critical parameters measuring the performances of flexible strain sensors and materials development contains different flexible substrates, new nano- and hybrid- materials are introduced. Then, the developed working mechanisms, theoretical analysis, and computational simulation are presented. Next, based on different material design, diverse applications including human motion detection and health monitoring, soft robotics and human-machine interface, implantable devices, and biomedical applications are highlighted. Finally, synthesis consideration of the massive production industry of flexible strain sensors in the future; different fabrication approaches that are fully expected are classified and discussed.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices are widely used in daily life. Among them, flexible sensors are widely studied by their potential for extensive applications. Materials are one of the essential foundations for making electronic devices. Due to the excellent unique properties of organic and inorganic hybrid materials, they are widely used in the manufacture of flexible sensors. Flexible sensor technology is developed by combining organic and inorganic materials and these hybrid materials can ensure the high frequency and high‐speed conductive property of a device while making the device flexible. In this review, the main three elements of sensors are mentioned and the materials selections in different elements are reviewed. After investigating the materials' performance requirements of sensors, the performance of hybrid materials in sensors is comprehensively summarized according to the type of the sensor. Finally, some challenges and future directions of development are summarized and presented for flexible sensors based on such promising materials.

A Flexible Resistive Pressure Sensor Based On Thermally Expandable Microspheres

Abstract:flexible pressure sensors, as important parts of electronic skins, have attracted great attention for their great potential applications in soft robot, wearable electronic device and biomedical diagnosis. Pressure sensors based on resistive working mechanisms have attracted more attention owing to their high reliability, facile fabrication techniques and low energy consumption. Recently, great efforts have been focused on increasing the sensitivity of flexible pressure sensors, however, developing high-sensitive pressure sensors with a cost-effective fabrication method are still challenging. In this study, a new type of flexible pressure sensor with great sensitivity of 4.11 kPa(-1), fast response time (<35 ms) and high stability (1000 cycles of pressure loading/unloading) has been designed based on thermal expandable microspheres. In addition, the fabricated pressure sensor is successfully applied to detect tiny human motions ( deglutition, vocal cord vibration) and monitor finger bending. More importantly, because of the simple fabrication, the flexible pressure sensor can easily achieve large-scale production.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors capable of transducing pressure stimuli into electrical signals have drawn extensive attention owing to their potential applications for human-machine interaction and healthcare monitoring. To meet these application demands, engineering microstructures in the pressure sensors are an efficient way to improve key sensing performances, such as sensitivity, linear sensing range, response time, hysteresis, and durability. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent advances in the fabrication and application of high-performance flexible pressure sensors via engineering microstructures. The implementation mechanisms and fabrication strategies of microstructures including micropatterned, porous, fiber-network, and multiple microstructures are systematically summarized. The applications of flexible pressure sensors with microstructures in the fields of wearable human-machine interaction, and ex vivo and in vivo healthcare monitoring are comprehensively discussed. Finally, the outlook and challenges in the future improvement of flexible pressure sensors toward practical applications are presented.

Abstract:Flexible stretchable strain sensors have received tremendous attention due to their excellent performance and comfort. Material selection and structural design are considered the two essential factors for driving the development of flexible stretchable strain sensors. Due to natural biomaterials with numerous superiorities (such as unique structures, diverse chemical group, biodegradability, and environmental benignity) and biostructures with delicate and rational design principles, they have become new stars in the field of flexible stretchable strain sensors. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the state-of-the-art achievements in biomaterials and biostructures for the development of high-performance flexible stretchable strain sensors. According to the structural features of flexible stretchable strain sensors, the various roles and function of biomaterials are reviewed in detail, including as active materials, flexible substrates, and functional materials. Special attention is paid to the three most representative nature-inspired structural designs and optimization for flexible stretchable strain sensors, including crack, brick-and-mortar and wrinkled structures. The main challenges and future R&D directions for biomaterials-and biostructures- inspired flexible stretchable strain sensors are discussed. This comprehensive review and outlooks will enlighten readers to better understand the current development status and future research activities in using natural biomaterials and biostructures for the fabrication of flexible stretchable strain sensors.
