Abstract:Nanobiotechnology is converged by nanotechnology and biotechnology, and is a major component of nanotechnology. It is also an important research topic in the area of biomedicine. The nanoparticle is the most interested and useful nanomaterial used in the biomedical field, which have many characteristics. This article introduced some new reserach achievements and progress in the biosensor and biodetection field based on the nanoparticle technology, presented the synthesis methods for nanoparticle, the application of nanoparticle in the nanobiosensor and nanobiochip, and some related research work carried out in our lab. Finally, the development of this field in the future was prospected.

Abstract:AbstractSingle‐biomolecule electronic sensing techniques are of great importance in many fields, from medical diagnosis to disease surveillance. As the physiological changes of single biomolecules can be converted into measurable electrical signals, single‐molecule electronic biosensors can realize real‐time, highly sensitive, and high‐bandwidth detection of individual intra‐ or inter‐molecular interactions. These powerful single‐molecule sensing devices have demonstrated key advantages in precisely providing rare and detailed intermediate information along reaction pathways and revealing unique properties hidden in ensemble measurements. This review summarizes significant advances in single‐molecule electronic biosensors, emphasizing biomolecule recognition, interaction, and reaction dynamics at the single‐molecule level. Sensor configurations, sensing mechanisms, and representative applications are also discussed. Furthermore, a perspective on the use of photoelectric integrated systems for synchronous sensing of the electrical and optical signals of single biomolecules is provided.

Abstract:Biosensors, devices capable of detecting biomolecules or bioactive substances, have recently become one of the important tools in the fields of bioanalysis and medical diagnostics. A biosensor is an analytical system composed of biosensitive elements and signal-processing elements used to detect various biological and chemical substances. Biomimetic elements are key to biosensor technology and are the components in a sensor that are responsible for identifying the target analyte. The construction methods and working principles of biosensors based on synthetic biomimetic elements, such as DNAzyme, molecular imprinted polymers and aptamers, and their updated applications in biomedical analysis are summarised. Finally, the technical bottlenecks and future development prospects for biomedical analysis are summarised and discussed.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of science and technology, the application of nanomaterials in the field of biosensors is becoming increasingly widespread. Nanobiosensors are widely used due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, small size, and low cost, finding applications in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, biotechnology, and industrial automation, among others. This paper primarily discusses the research progress of biosensors based on nanomaterials and their applications in biological detection and medical diagnosis. It introduces the working principles of nanomaterial-based biosensors, provides practical application cases of nanomaterial biosensors in various fields, such as protein detection, DNA detection and pathogen detection. And this paper also looks forward to the prospects, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of nanomaterial-based biosensors. With the deepening of nanomaterial research and the continuous innovation of technology, biosensors based on nanomaterials are expected to play an increasingly important role in biological detection, medical diagnosis, and biomedical research. Simultaneously, they also hold the potential for widespread application in clinical diagnosis, biosecurity, and environmental protection.

Abstract:Biosensors have rapidly emerged as a high-sensitivity and convenient detection method. Among various types of biosensors, optical and electrochemical are the most commonly used. Conventionally, antibodies have been employed to ensure specific interaction between the transmission material and analytes. However, there has been increasing recognition of peptides as a promising recognition element for biosensor development in recent years. The use of peptides as recognition elements provides high level of specificity, sensitivity, and stability for the detection process. The combination of peptide designs and optical or electrochemical detection methods has significantly improved biosensor efficacy. These advancements present opportunities for developing biosensors with diverse functions that can be used to lay a strong scientific foundation for the development of personalized medicine and various other fields. This paper reviews the recent advancements in the development and application of peptide-based optical and electrochemical biosensors, as well as their prospects as a sensor type.

Abstract: Technological platforms that provide the reliable, rapid, quantitative, cheap, and high-throughput identification of biomolecules play a significant role in the clinical deployment of personalized treatment [1]. A biosensor is a small device employing biochemical molecular-recognition properties as the basis for a selective analysis [2]. Three basic parts are involved in any biosensor system: biosensing, signal transduction, and signal readout. The biosensing element is capable of recognizing the presence, activity, or concentration of a specific analyte; it could be either a binding process (affinity ligand-based biosensor with the recognition element of a protein, peptide, DNA, RNA, whole cell, or tissue) or a biocatalytic reaction (enzyme-based biosensor). Over the past decades, due to their advantages of specificity, speed, portability, and low cost, we have witnessed a tremendous amount of activity in the area of biosensors as well as their clinical applications [3], especially for cancer diagnosis [4–10].

Abstract:<p>The development of rapid biosensing platforms is an integral part for the detection of many diseases, as well as important clinical biomarkers. So far, many new biosensing technologies have been described in literature but many of these novel platforms remain noncommercializable due to challenges in fabrication process, operational conditions as well as other cost concerns. Hence, there is a need to develop efficient and cost‐effective biosensing platforms and of the types available from literature, surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensors have certain standout attributes. The simple manufacturing requirements of SAW‐based biosensor and its wide operating frequency range have produced promising outcome for bio‐detection and this has rendered this technological platform as a serious contender for point‐of‐care biosensor design. So far, SAW devices are reported for the detection of various bioactive targets of clinical importance and several designs are already commercialized. In this review, the latest development of SAW technologies in recent years for the detection of a broad range of biomolecules is presented and some of the challenges as well as potential future developments of SAW biosensors are highlighted.</p>

Abstract:As emerging platforms, nanoporous-based biosensors have potentially useful applications for sensitive and selective detection of various analytes. The integration of nanoporous materials ( e.g. , nanocarbons, mesoporous, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and MOF-based nanocomposites, etc. ) with various transduction techniques, such as electrochemical, optical, and mass-sensitized, has led to the development of biosensors for a wide spectrum of applications in healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food safety. These biosensors take advantage of the unique properties of nanoporous materials, such as tunable pore size and selective surface chemistry with high surface area, and enhance the interaction between the analyte and the recognition element. Overall, biosensors based on nanoporous material have very low limits of detection and appropriate linear range. This review focuses on recent developments in the design of biosensors based on nanoporous materials, including sensing mechanisms and applications.

Abstract:Cell-based electrochemical biosensors have contributed tremendously to the fields of biology, medicine, chemistry, pharmacology, and environmental science. With electrochemical transducers and whole cells as the recognition elements, these biosensors provide new horizons for biosensing and life science research. This review focuses on the research accomplishments on this topic over the last three years, and is divided into three sections according to the types of cellular responses. Our aim is to highlight how simple and sensitive electrochemical methods can be coupled with cells by virtue of the integration of interface control, nanotechnology and genetic engineering to generate new enabling technologies. Some specific examples to demonstrate how these sensors are useful in medicinal chemistry and drug design have also been discussed. It is hoped that this review can provide inspiration for the development of fast, selective, sensitive, and convenient detection and diagnosis platforms.

Abstract:Examination of disease biomarkers mostly performed on crude materials, such as serum, meets some obstacles, resulting from sample complexity and the wide range of concentrations and sizes of the components. Techniques currently used in clinical diagnostics are usually time-consuming and expensive. The more sensitive and portable devices are needed for early diagnostics. Chemical sensors are devices that convert chemical information into parameters suitable for fast and precise processing and measurement.We review the use of biosensors and their possible application in early diagnostics of some diseases like cancer or viral infections. We focus on different types of biorecognition and some technical modifications, lowering the limit of detection potentially attractive to medical practitioners.Among the new diagnostic strategies, the use of biosensors is of increasing interest. In these techniques, the capture ligand interacts with the analyte of interest. Measuring interactions between partners in real time by surface plasmon resonance yields valuable information about kinetics and affinity in a short time and without labels. Importantly, the tendency in such techniques is to make biosensor devices smaller and the test results apparent with the naked eye, so they can be used in point-of-care medicine.

Abstract:Biosensors are powerful analytical tools for biology and biomedicine, with applications ranging from drug discovery to medical diagnostics, food safety, and agricultural and environmental monitoring. Typically, biological recognition receptors, such as enzymes, antibodies, and nucleic acids, are immobilized on a surface, and used to interact with one or more specific analytes to produce a physical or chemical change, which can be captured and converted to an optical or electrical signal by a transducer. However, many existing biosensing methods rely on chemical, electrochemical and optical methods of identification and detection of specific targets, and are often: complex, expensive, time consuming, suffer from a lack of portability, or may require centralised testing by qualified personnel. Given the general dependence of most optical and electrochemical techniques on labelling molecules, this review will instead focus on mechanical and electrical detection techniques that can provide information on a broad range of species without the requirement of labelling. These techniques are often able to provide data in real time, with good temporal sensitivity. This review will cover the advances in the development of mechanical and electrical biosensors, highlighting the challenges and opportunities therein.

Abstract:In recent years, nanomaterials of different shape, size, and composition have been prepared and characterized, such as gold and silver nanoparticles, quantum dots, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterials, and hybrid nanocomposites. Because of their unique physical and chemical properties, these nanomaterials are increasingly used in point-of-care testing (POCT) to improve analytical performance and simplify detection process. They are used either as carriers for immobilizing biorecognition elements, or as labels for signal generation, transduction and amplification. In this commentary, we highlight recent POCT technologies that employ nanotechnology for the analysis of disease biomarkers, including small-molecule metabolites, enzymes, proteins, nucleic acids, cancer cells, and pathogens. Recent advances in lateral flow tests, printable electrochemical biosensors, and microfluidics-based devices are summarized. Existing challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Modern life quality is strongly supported by the advances made in biosensors, which has been attributed to their crucial and viable contribution in point-of-care (POC) technology developments. POC devices are exploited for the fast tracing of disease progression, rapid analysis of water, and food quality assessment. Blood glucose meters, home pregnancy strips, and COVID-19 rapid tests all represent common examples of successful biosensors. Biosensors can provide great specificity due to the incorporation of selective bio-recognition elements and portability at significantly reduced costs. Electrochemical biosensor platforms are one of the most advantageous of these platforms because they offer many merits, such as being cheap, selective, specific, rapid, and portable. Furthermore, they can be incorporated into smartphones and various analytical approaches in order to increase their sensitivity and many other properties. As a very broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development, biosensors include all disciplines and backgrounds from materials science, chemistry, physics, medicine, microbiology/biology, and engineering. Accordingly, in this state-of-the-art article, historical background alongside the long journey of biosensing construction and development, starting from the Clark oxygen electrode until reaching highly advanced wearable stretchable biosensing devices, are discussed. Consequently, selected examples among the miscellaneous applications of nanobiosensors (such as microbial detection, cancer diagnosis, toxicity analysis, food quality-control assurance, point of care, and health prognosis) are described. Eventually, future perspectives for intelligent biosensor commercialization and exploitation in real-life that is going to be supported by machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are stated.

Abstract:Sensitive and accurate detection of biomolecules by multiplexed methods is important for disease diagnosis, drug research, and biochemical analysis. Mass spectrometry has the advantages of high sensitivity, high throughput, and high resolution, making it ideal for biomolecular sensing. As a result of the development of atmospheric pressure mass spectrometry, researchers have been able to use a variety of means to identify target biomolecules and recognize the converted signals by mass spectrometry. In this review, three main approaches and tools are summarized for mass spectrometry sensing and biopsy techniques, including array biosensing, probe/pen-based mass spectrometry, and other biosensor–mass spectrometry coupling techniques. Portability and practicality of relevant mass spectrometry sensing methods are reviewed, together with possible future directions to promote the advancement of mass spectrometry for target identification of biomolecules and rapid detection of real biological samples.

Abstract:Nanomaterial technology is a comprehensive subject with strong intersections, and its related research content involves a wide range of modern scientific and technological fields. The science and technology in the area of nanomaterials has attracted the attention of many research groups over the past few years. By its very nature, this topic has a lot of room for research, related to very tiny objects in the nanometer range. Nanomaterials refer to the sudden changes in the properties of substances when they reach the nanometer scale, resulting in special properties. In this paper, we introduce various nanomaterials commonly used in the field of biosensing, and briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of nanoscale biosensors. At the same time, we also explain the working principles of various types of biosensors based on nanomaterial technology, including electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, and piezoelectric biosensors. In addition, we also introduce the sensing targets of common biosensors, such as enzymes, DNA, microorganisms, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for the application of nanomaterials technology in biosensing, and analyze the current trends and future directions.

Abstract:Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This special issue of Biotechnology Journal focuses on biosensors. By definition, biosensors are a type of devices that transduce biological recognition reactions to various physical signals including optical, electrochemical, acoustic and mechanical. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. As examples, nanomaterials and nanostructured surfaces have been proven of high utility in recognition-based capturing and signal amplification, which have remarkably increased the sensitivity for detecting a wide range of biomarkers for cancers, as well as targets other applications. To reflect important progress and provide a broader perspective in this exciting field, we organized this Special Issue by inviting active biosensor researchers to contribute a collection of research articles and reviews. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This issue contains three invited reviews. Tan et al. summarize recent advances in phage display technology for bioanalysis 1. Lee et al. review microtechnology-based organ systems and whole-body models for drug screening 2. Kuroda et al. describe the use of material-binding proteins and peptides for biosensing and summarized rapid and sensitive detection of airborne asbestos fibers 3. In ten research articles, two papers focus on the optimization of biosensors for better sensitivity, one explores the graphene interface for DNA analysis 4 and the other studies the electrode interface for electrochemical detection 5. Endo et al. developed printable photonics-based photonic crystal films for label-free optical detection of C-reactive protein using antigen-antibody reaction 6. An electrochemical sensing system employing fructosamine 6-kinase was developed for glycated albumin measurement without relying on proteolytic digestion 7. In an interesting study, Iijima et al. demonstrate that bio-nanocapsule-based scaffold improves the sensitivity and ligand-binding capacity of mammalian receptors on the sensor chip 8. Hokuto et al. employed bio-LSI systems for simultaneous immunosensing of different analytes in multiple specimens based on an imaging of enzyme activity 9. Two studies explored the use of aptamers for developing biosensors 10, 11. Xiao and Xiang proposed a simple fluorescence method for quantification of total phosphorothioate content in bacterial DNA 12. Finally, Chaumpluk et al. designed a simple bendable paper-based lab-on-a-chip for the detection of aflatoxic strains of Aspergillus sp.in herbal specimens 12. Abstract:As a new kind of analytical instrument,the principles,types and characters of biosensors were discussed in this paper.A biosensor is usually composed of a recognition element of biological origin and a physicochemical transducer.The biological element is capable of sensing the presence,activity or concentration of a chemical analyse in solution.The sensing takes place either as a binding event or a biocatalytical event.These interactions produce a measurable change in a solution property,in which the transducer is converted into a quantifiable electrical signal.The principles,types and applications of biosensors in environmental inspection,food production,clinical medicine and military defense were reviewed,and the trends in research were predicated.Furthermore,an attempt had been made to describe the future development directions and prospects.

Abstract:In recent years, the sensitivity and specificity of optical sensors has improved tremendously due to improvements in biochemical functionalization protocols and optical detection systems. As a result, single-molecule sensitivity has been reported in a range of biosensing assay formats. In this Perspective, we summarize optical sensors that achieve single-molecule sensitivity in direct label-free assays, sandwich assays, and competitive assays. We describe the advantages and disadvantages of single-molecule assays and summarize future challenges in the field including their optical miniaturization and integration, multimodal sensing capabilities, accessible time scales, and compatibility with real-life matrices such as biological fluids. We conclude by highlighting the possible application areas of optical single-molecule sensors that include not only healthcare but also the monitoring of the environment and industrial processes.
