Abstract:A new method for the calorimetric characterization of high-energetic, fast reactions in flow mode was developed. The use of an engineered flow reactor in combination with a process modeling software allowed the deconvolution of the reaction enthalpy from space-resolved temperature profiles. The new procedure was verified in a comparison with a conventional batch calorimeter and subsequently implemented for the thermal characterization of an organolithium flow process. The information collected for this reaction successfully supported a scale-up to the pilot plant. Overall, the new approach resulted in being superior when compared with established procedures, enabling the generation of precise calorimetric data in an accurate scale-down flow device.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:This work presents a new micro-reactor-based capillary calorimeter tor the enthalpy measurement of fast exothermal reactions. The new calorimeter was operated in the continuous way and the reaction enthalpy can be easily measured with the online temperatures from detached sensor chips. A standard reaction system and an industrial reaction system were selected to test this new calorimeter with homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction processes. The measurement was taken place at nearly adiabatic situations and the reaction enthalpy was calculated from the rising of temperature. High accuracy and good repeatability were obtained from this new calorimeter with relative experimental errors less than 3.5% and 2.4%, respectively. The temperature response was quick in this new calorimeter too, which was benefit to the low cost of reactive component. The fast and accurate measurement was contributed to the nice mixing performance and strict plug flowing in the calorimeter. Abstract:Measuring the thermokinetic data of chemical reactions is an important part for chemical process development. However, some reactions are very sensitive to the presence of metals, limiting the use of standard materials for calorimeters. In this work we present a flow calorimeter employing a 3D printed ceramic reactor plate for the measurement of metal-sensitive reactions. The calorimeter was characterized by residence time measurements aided by mixing simulations, and was validated via a standard neutralization reaction, an aggressive nitration reaction, and a binary solvent system for mixing enthalpy, before being used for a nitrosylation reaction featuring a metal sensitive product.

Abstract:Isothermal microcalorimetry is used to study the heat flow of lithium-ion cells to provide insight into active material characteristics and to provide data required for the thermal optimization on the cell and system level. Recent research has shown the application of this technique to cells during high cycling rates, such as for fast charging. However, the limitation of isothermal microcalorimetry is the low-pass characteristic of the measured heat flow, introduced by the thermal inertia of the setup and the calorimeter itself. To solve this problem, we introduce an optimized cell holder design and a novel data processing method for a time-resolved measurement of highly dynamic heat flow profiles. These are described in detail and validated using a synthetic power profile applied to a dummy cell. Experiments on a graphite-lithium half-cell illustrate improvement of the method and the optimized cell holder when compared to the state-of-the-art setup, demonstrating a 3.6 times faster response time, which was further improved using a post-processing deconvolution technique. This improved time resolution provides the acquisition of more detailed features than currently shown in the literature and allows an accurate correlation of the thermal signals to electrochemical features like, e.g., the differential voltage of the cell.

Abstract:A novel High-Throughput Continuous Hydrothermal (HiTCH) flow synthesis reactor was used to make directly and rapidly a 66-sample nanoparticle library (entire phase diagram) of nanocrystalline Ce(x)Zr(y)Y(z)O(2-delta) in less than 12 h. High resolution PXRD data were obtained for the entire heat-treated library (at 1000 degrees C/1 h) in less than a day using the new robotic beamline I11, located at Diamond Light Source (DLS). This allowed Rietveld-quality powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data collection of the entire 66-sample library in <1 day. Consequently, the authors rapidly mapped out phase behavior and sintering behaviors for the entire library. Out of the entire 66-sample heat-treated library, the PXRD data suggests that 43 possess the fluorite structure, of which 30 (out of 36) are ternary compositions. The speed, quantity and quality of data obtained by our new approach, offers an exciting new development which will allow structure-property relationships to be accessed for nanoceramics in much shorter time periods.

Abstract:A novel non-silicon MEMS calorimetric gas flow sensor is presented. The sensor consists of a metal sensing/heating array placed over a glass substrate and a polyimide layer for passivation. Both the anti-pressure and anti- impact performance is enhanced by using a glass solid substrate instead of a common silicon suspending structure. This merit widens the application range of micro calorimetric sensors from millimeter- or sub-millimeter-tubes to industrial 50 mm-tubes. Both the three-element calorimetric mode and the two-element calorimetric mode were operated and calibrated on an industrial gas calibration system. It is shown that the measuring range of the prototype reaches up to 0-37.5 m3/h. Both Characteristics and optimization methods of the two calorimetric modes are discussed respectively and comparison of the two calorimetric modes is also included.

Abstract:Abstract Operando calorimetry has previously been utilized to study electrochemical reactions and degradation in electrochemical cells such as batteries. Calorimetric data can provide important information on the lifetime and thermal properties of electrochemical cells in practical engineering applications such as thermal management. High temperature electrochemical cells such as solid oxide fuel cells or electrolyzers can also benefit from operando calorimetry, but to the authors’ knowledge such capabilities have not been commercially developed. Herein, an operando calorimeter is reported that is capable of simultaneous calorimetry and electrochemistry at temperatures up to 1000 °C and in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. The calorimeter is constructed by modifying a commercial apparatus originally designed to study high temperature electrochemical cells in various gas environments. A grey-box, nonlinear system identification model is utilized to analyze both electrochemical and calorimetric data of BaZr 0.8 Ce 0.1 Y 0.1 O 3 based electrochemical cells and achieve a calorimeter electrochemical cell power sensitivity of 16.1 ± 11.7 mW. This operando calorimeter provides the capability to study thermal behaviour of electrochemical cells at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Flash Joule heating has been used as a versatile solid-state synthesis method in the production of a wide range of products, including organic, inorganic, and ceramic products. Conventional flash Joule heating systems are large and customized, presenting significant barriers in the cost of assembly, the expertise needed to operate, and attaining uniformity of results between different systems. Even laboratory-scale flash Joule heating systems struggle to operate above 10-gram capacity, and they suffer poor temperature controllability. We present here the use of commercial off-the-shelf arc welders as a superior alternative to standard flash Joule heating systems due to their low cost ($120), ease of use, compact size, high temperature controllability, and tunability. We demonstrate gram-scale synthesis of a variety of organic and ceramic species using these systems. With the addition of a new reactor configuration for only $260, we scale up synthesis of these products to record rates for laboratory scale, achieving a production rate of 3 kg/h for graphene, and kg/day production rates for SiC, carbon nanotubes, SnSe2, and SnS¬2.

Abstract:In this paper, a microsystem integrated with infrared camera is developed to measure the reaction enthalpy of fast exothermic reactions. The microsystem is composed of a micromixer and a coiled capillary, which are all placed in a vacuum box to form an adiabatic environment. The fast exothermic reactions are started in the micromixer and then the temperature profiles of the capillary are measured via the infrared transparent window by the infrared camera. The reaction enthalpy can be determined from the temperature rise of the capillary. Two reactions which are homogeneous and heterogeneous respectively are performed with this method. The results show that the data obtained are in good agreement with the values reported in literature with the relative experimental errors less than 5%. Compared with the traditional calorimeter, the microsystem can provide a quick, safe and non -intrusive method to obtain the temperature profiles of the fast exothermic reactions. Abstract:We develop new computational and experimental methods to determine materials properties at high temperature, such as melting temperature, heat of fusion, heat capacity, and lattice constant. From density functional theory, we construct the small-size coexistence method and the SLUSCHI package to compute the properties accurately, as well as to fully automate the computation process. From experiment, we build experimental approaches, including ultra-high-temperature Drop-n-Catch (DnC) calorimetry and synchrotron X-ray diffraction on solid laser-heated aerodynamically levitated samples. Employing deep learning techniques, we build an ensemble graph-neural-networks model that predicts materials properties in milliseconds. The simultaneous development of computational and experimental approaches allows us to integrate these methods and the data generated by them.

Abstract:Some aqueous reactions in biological or chemical fields are accomplished at a high temperature. When the reaction temperature is higher than 100 degrees C, an autoclave reactor is usually required to elevate the boiling point of the water by creating a high-pressure environment in a closed system. This work presented an alternative continuous flowing microfluidic solution for aqueous reaction with a reaction temperature higher than 100 degrees C. The pressure regulating function was successfully fulfilled by a small microchannel based on a delicate hydrodynamic design. Combined with micro heater and temperature sensor that integrated in a single chip by utilizing silicon-based microfabrication techniques, this pressure regulating microchannel generated a high-pressure/high-temperature environment in the upstream reaction zone when the reagents continuously flow through the chip. As a preliminary demonstration, thermal digestion of aqueous total phosphorus sample was achieved in this continuous flowing micro-reactor at a working pressure of 990 kPa (under the working flow rate of 20 nl/s) along with a reaction temperature of 145 degrees C. This continuous flowing microfluidic solution for high-temperature reaction may find applications in various micro total analysis systems. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
Uncovering Flash Organometallic Catalytic Progresses Enabled by Continuous Microfluidic Devices

Abstract:The flash organometallic catalysis is a new concept that refers to the study of fast and controlled organometallic catalytic reactions by using microfluidic devices. Flash reactions' kinetics (ms ‐ s scale) is often ignored due to the lack of proper research tool in organometallic chemistry. The development of microfluidic systems offers the opportunity to discover under‐studied mechanisms and new reactions. In this concept, the basic theory of kinetic measurement in a microreactor is briefly reviewed and then two examples on studying flash organometallic catalytic transformation are introduced. One example is the discovery of a highly active palladium catalytic species for Suzuki Coupling and the other example is the study of a neglected isomerization catalytic cycle with a time scale of seconds before isomerization‐hydroformylation by customized microfluidic devices. The last part is summary and prospect of this new area. Customizing a microfluidic device with good engineering design for a target reaction supports flash reactions' kinetic experimentation and could become a general strategy in chemistry lab.

Abstract:The use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure the thermal behavior of individual components and electrolyte/electrode combinations is common. However, here we focus on DSC tests on an anode, cathode, and electrolyte (ACE) component combination over a temperature range that includes many of the phase transitions and key reactions (i.e., to 500°C) that contribute to thermal runaway. This method can help quantify the complex reaction network in a full cell, thereby informing potential safety issues. Here, we used DSC heat flow data from a solid-state Li0.43CoO2+C+PVDF | LLZO | Li metal ACE sample and its components to quantify key factors affecting results. We focused on three areas: (1) ACE sample preparation and assembly in DSC pans, (2) DSC measurement parameters, and (3) heat flow analysis. Key points include the choice of component ratios (e.g., commercially relevant N:P capacity ratio), the importance of conductive carbon and binder, type of pan used, DSC ramp rate, and integration method used when dealing with broad and overlapping exothermic peaks. This work deepens the scientific basis and best practices for obtaining heat flow data from ACE samples for early-stage evaluation of solid-state and beyond battery safety.

Development and Performance Analysis of an Atomic Layer Thermopile Sensor for Composite Heat Flux Testing in an Explosive Environment

Abstract:Traditional contact heat flux sensors suffer from a lack of dynamic performance, and existing non-contact optical heat measurement equipment fails to detect convective heat transfer effectively. This limitation precludes the effective testing of composite heat flux in explosive fields. This study introduces an ultra-responsive atomic layer thermopile (ALTP) heat flux sensor, developed and employed for the first time, to evaluate the transient heat flux associated with thermobaric explosions. Measurements reveal that the ALTP sensor's temporal resolution surpasses that of the thermal resistance thin film heat flux sensor (TFHF), attaining a spectral response time of 10 μs under pulsed laser irradiation. Beyond these radiation-based tests, the present work also conducted novel simulation analyses of high-temperature jet impacts using COMSOL software. Static simulation discovered that fluid velocity significantly influences ALTP's sensitivity, resulting in an error of 71%. Conversely, dynamic simulation demonstrated that an increase in fluid velocity reduces the ALTP's time constant, whereas other factors such as fluid temperature exert minimal impact on its dynamic characteristics. This confirms that the simulation model compensates for the cost and accuracy deficiencies of convection heating tests. It also provides a new way to analyze the error of explosive heat flux measurement caused by sensitivity fluctuation and insufficient dynamic performance. In thermobaric explosive trials, the maximum heat fluxes recorded were 202 kW/m2 in semi-enclosed environments and 526 kW/m2 in open environments. A distinctive double-wave phenomenon was evident in the test curve. By a fast-response thermocouple, the study was able to differentiate between radiation and convective heat flux in the explosion field. The findings substantiate that the ALTP sensor amalgamates the benefits of optical thermal measurement tools with those of traditional contact heat flux sensors, thereby facilitating composite heat flux measurements in the challenging conditions of an explosive field.

Abstract:Hydrocarbon fuels play a crucial role in addressing excessive body temperatures experienced by hypersonic vehicles during high Mach number operations, serving both as propellants and coolants. Flow calorimeters measure fluid thermodynamic parameters. Traditional ones rely heavily on thermocouples for temperature measurement, leading to a black-box effect on thermodynamic parameter analysis. To solve these problems, a distributed flow calorimetry based on scanning radiation thermometry is proposed innovatively. The analysis object is transformed from the whole tube to the microelement. The heat balance equation for the microelement and the mapping relationship between tube coordinates, tube temperature, and fluid thermodynamic parameters have been established. The feasibility of the mathematical model of fluid temperature and distributed flow calorimetry is verified by numerical simulation. Experimental data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology are compared for the distributed specific heat capacities of water and n-decane over wide temperature ranges. Between temperatures of 296.43 and 564.45 K, water's distributed specific heat capacity shows a relative error ranging from −7.42% to 8.04%, with a mean deviation of −0.72%. For temperatures spanning 298.97–601.77 K, n-decane's distributed specific heat capacity exhibits a relative error from −5.13% to 5.57%, with a mean deviation of −0.31%. The results demonstrate that distributed flow calorimetry holds promising prospects for measuring the changes in thermodynamic parameters of fluids during heat exchange.

Abstract:There is a growing need for efficient and reliable energy storage technologies to expand renewable energy adoption and transit to a decarbonized clean energy future. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) through reversible gas-solid reactions has exhibited considerable potential. Up to now, TCES has primarily been studied at the material level and within lab-scale reactors. As such, accurate numerical models are needed for further reactor design and scale-up. In this work, a transient three-dimensional heat and mass transfer continuum model was developed to simulate the transport phenomena coupled with exothermic oxidation of magnesium‐manganese-oxide particles in a high-temperature moving-bed reactor for TCES. The reactor included direct heat extraction at temperatures >1000 °C. The predicted temperature distributions, oxygen concentration profiles, and steady-state reactor energy extraction efficiency were in good agreement with measured values from a corresponding experimental setup. The performance of the reactor was further investigated through two parametric studies (varied particle flow rates and gas extraction ratios), which demonstrated a strong dependence of reactor efficiency (varied between 15 %–40 %) on both operating parameters. The present heat and mass transfer model will be valuable in further reactor design and scale-up studies, as well as for selection of operating conditions to maximize efficiency.

Velocity field measurement and heat transfer characteristics of the melting process under constant heat flux

Abstract:Thermal energy storage based on phase change materials plays a crucial role in achieving net-zero carbon emissions and recovering waste thermal energy. However, the accurate experimental velocity fields and the simulation with the conjugate heat transfer are inadequate for the constant heat flux condition. Herein, a transparent melting experiment platform is established under constant heat flux and convection cooling with constant temperature. Non-invasive measurement technology is employed to calculate the velocity field of the liquid phase. A numerical model considered conjugate heat transfer is developed via the finite volume method, demonstrating good agreement against the experimental data. The findings indicate that experiments obtain reliable data for the numerical model. The melting process consists of three distinct stages: conduction-dominated, convection-dominated, and post-region, with a sharp decrease, increase, and gradual decrease in the Nusselt number, respectively. Stronger convective heat transfer coefficients rise when heating vertically. Moreover, the hot wall remains at the equilibrium temperature when input power is equal to the absorbed energy under the discussed heating conditions. Increasing the heat flux from 1000 to 3000 W m −2 results in a temperature rise to 57.3 oC at the heating wall and a 74 % reduction in the complete melting time. This study contributes to the understanding of the melting process through combined experimental and simulation approaches under constant heat flux boundary conditions.

Abstract:Ca(OH)(2)/CaO fluidized thermochemical heat storage can provide considerable heat storage power, and is a promising large-scale energy storage technology. Owing to the limitations of existing gas-solid reaction kinetics research equipment, there is a lack of Ca(OH)(2)/CaO reaction kinetics research under fluidization conditions, with a lack of reliable reference data for the design and operation of fluidized bed reactors. In response to the above mentioned problem, and through our research, we developed a fast-reaction thermogravimetric analyzer to provide samples with excellent heat and mass transfer conditions close to fluidization. The fast-reaction thermogravimetric analyzer enables the reaction of Ca(OH)2 to mainly take place under isothermal conditions by rapidly moving the high-temperature reactor, as well as inputting purge gas at a high flow rate to provide excellent mass transfer conditions for the sample, while obtaining real-time and reliable mass data for thermal analysis kinetics studies. Through an in-depth performance verification, the apparent activation energy of char combustion in a TGA (144.82 kJ/mol), fast-reaction thermogravimetric analyzer (88.32 kJ/mol), and fluidized bed reactor (47.23 kJ/mol) were obtained by the model-free method (iso-conversional). The comparison of data proved that the fast-reaction thermogravimetric analyzer could obtain kinetic parameters similar to a fluidized bed reactor, which was also verified using other materials. Therefore, the fast-reaction thermogravimetric analyzer developed in this study can provide a new solution for studying the reaction kinetics of fluidized thermochemical heat storage for Ca(OH)(2)/CaO, in addition to acting as a reliable reference for the design and operation of fluidized bed reactors.
A novel method for experiments in a one-atmosphere box furnace

Abstract:Abstract We present a conceptually simple method to perform high-temperature experiments in a one-atmosphere box furnace that has a negligible cost of materials. The experimental setup consists of two commercially available materials and can be customized to sample or furnace size with few limitations. Furthermore, the design allows easy extraction of samples in one piece, making them eligible for textural analysis. The setup comprises a graphite capsule and a fireclay shell, the latter of which acts as a heat-resistant protective shield. Containers must be individually hand-crafted, but each can hold multiple samples. The setup can be reliably used in temperature conditions below the heat tolerance limit of the commercial fireclay, commonly ~1400 °C. Moreover, the graphite capsule buffers the oxygen fugacity to strongly reducing conditions during the experiment. The main advantage of our method lies in the utilization of easily accessible and low-cost materials that provides a widely applicable experimental setup easily used at larger scales. The method was developed during an experimental study of magmatic crystal-liquid suspensions and was reliable for experiments lasting for up to 36 h.
