Abstract:A new method for the calorimetric characterization of high-energetic, fast reactions in flow mode was developed. The use of an engineered flow reactor in combination with a process modeling software allowed the deconvolution of the reaction enthalpy from space-resolved temperature profiles. The new procedure was verified in a comparison with a conventional batch calorimeter and subsequently implemented for the thermal characterization of an organolithium flow process. The information collected for this reaction successfully supported a scale-up to the pilot plant. Overall, the new approach resulted in being superior when compared with established procedures, enabling the generation of precise calorimetric data in an accurate scale-down flow device.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:This work presents a new micro-reactor-based capillary calorimeter tor the enthalpy measurement of fast exothermal reactions. The new calorimeter was operated in the continuous way and the reaction enthalpy can be easily measured with the online temperatures from detached sensor chips. A standard reaction system and an industrial reaction system were selected to test this new calorimeter with homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction processes. The measurement was taken place at nearly adiabatic situations and the reaction enthalpy was calculated from the rising of temperature. High accuracy and good repeatability were obtained from this new calorimeter with relative experimental errors less than 3.5% and 2.4%, respectively. The temperature response was quick in this new calorimeter too, which was benefit to the low cost of reactive component. The fast and accurate measurement was contributed to the nice mixing performance and strict plug flowing in the calorimeter. Abstract:Measuring the thermokinetic data of chemical reactions is an important part for chemical process development. However, some reactions are very sensitive to the presence of metals, limiting the use of standard materials for calorimeters. In this work we present a flow calorimeter employing a 3D printed ceramic reactor plate for the measurement of metal-sensitive reactions. The calorimeter was characterized by residence time measurements aided by mixing simulations, and was validated via a standard neutralization reaction, an aggressive nitration reaction, and a binary solvent system for mixing enthalpy, before being used for a nitrosylation reaction featuring a metal sensitive product.

Abstract:An automated flow platform based on a tube-in-tube contactor and micro-packed bed reactor is developed to measure the kinetics of gas-liquid-solid hydrogenation reactions. The liquid flowing in the inner tube of the tube-in-tube contactor is rapidly saturated to ensure a constant H(2)concentration before entering the micro-packed bed, which transforms the gas-liquid-solid system into a liquid-solid system. A ramping strategy is adopted in which the continuously varied residence time and the corresponding conversion data are obtained in a single experiment. Two reactions including hydrogenation of alpha-methylstyrene and nitrobenzene are chosen to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this automated platform. Varying the flow rate ramping shows that accurate kinetic determination requires a specific range of flow rate ramps. A kinetic curve of conversionversusresidence time (more than ten thousand data points) can be obtained in a single experiment within 50 min. The kinetic parameters obtained with this strategy agree well with literature values. The automated flow platform with flow rate ramping enables accurate determination of gas-liquid-solid reaction kinetics with higher efficiency and lower reagent cost compared with other methods.

Abstract:A new experimental method for the estimation of kinetic parameters using the signal of the heat flow from a differential scanning calorimeter is presented. An isothermal gas solid reaction was carried out in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in continuous flow on a fixed bed of catalyst in the crucible. An instantaneous energy balance in steady state was made for estimate the total heat flow produced by the reaction and deduce the kinetics parameters. Hydrogenation of CO 2 on Ni/Al 2 O 3 solid catalyst was used to produce methane as base reaction. This reaction was chosen because it is very exothermic, and also a well-known reaction in terms of kinetics. A large range of stochiometric and non-stochiometric operating conditions were studied with ratios of reactants H 2 /CO 2 between 3 and 7, diluted with N 2 at different isothermal conditions in an interval of temperature between 573 and 673 K for different flow rates of mixture of gases. CO 2 methanation involves several reactions in parallel where the main ones are the Sabatier reaction and the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. To keep the isothermicity of the catalytic bed, a theorical analysis of heat and mass transfer limitations was carried out to determine the absence of the internal and external limitation in the kinetic data.

Abstract:In this paper, a microsystem integrated with infrared camera is developed to measure the reaction enthalpy of fast exothermic reactions. The microsystem is composed of a micromixer and a coiled capillary, which are all placed in a vacuum box to form an adiabatic environment. The fast exothermic reactions are started in the micromixer and then the temperature profiles of the capillary are measured via the infrared transparent window by the infrared camera. The reaction enthalpy can be determined from the temperature rise of the capillary. Two reactions which are homogeneous and heterogeneous respectively are performed with this method. The results show that the data obtained are in good agreement with the values reported in literature with the relative experimental errors less than 5%. Compared with the traditional calorimeter, the microsystem can provide a quick, safe and non -intrusive method to obtain the temperature profiles of the fast exothermic reactions. Abstract:Every time a chemical reaction occurs, an energy exchange between reactants and environment exists, which is defined as the enthalpy of the reaction. In the last decades, research has resulted in an increasing number of devices at the micro- or nano-scale. Sensors, catalyzers, and energy storage systems are more and more developed as nano-devices which represent the building blocks for commercial "macroscopic" objects. A general method for the direct evaluation of the energy balance of such systems is not available at present. Calorimetry is a powerful tool to investigate energy exchange, but it usually needs macroscopic sample quantities. Here we report on the development of an original experimental setup able to detect temperature variations as low as 10 mK in a sample of 10 ng using a thermometer device having physical dimensions of 5x5 mm2. The technique has been utilized to measure the enthalpy release during the adsorption process of H2 on a titanium decorated monolayer graphene. The sensitivity of these thermometers is high enough to detect a hydrogen uptake of 10^(-10) moles, corresponding to 0.2 ng, with an enthalpy release of about 23 uJ. The experimental setup allows, in perspective, the scalability to even smaller sizes.

Abstract:In this study, a novel method was developed to understand the liquid-state reactions occurring inside the intermediate liquid component (ILC) during biomass fast pyrolysis. A new experimental setup using a heated 300 μm inner diameter capillary microchannel with flow visualization was designed to study isothermal kinetics and reaction mechanisms of liquid-state sugar hydrolysis reactions. Heat- and flow patterns were investigated to confirm the intrinsic character of the kinetic measurements. Following the conventional dimensional analysis, observations with a high-speed camera and computational fluid dynamics modelling (CFD) in COMSOL Multiphysics® were used to confirm the hydrodynamic slug-flow pattern and the scale function of the temperature. The microfluidic reactor can operate within a temperature range of 453-533 K, up to 7 MPa, and a residence time within the hot section of 5 to 80 s, which is controlled by the volumetric flow rate. The novelty of this reactor is that under the specified operating conditions and residence times, it can provide isothermal measurements of intrinsic reaction kinetics, which have never been reported for hydrolysis systems. After hydrolysis in the microfluidic reactor, liquid samples were analysed off-line through HPLC to determine the sugar conversion and product yields. A fitting kinetic approach was developed to treat the kinetic data and extract intrinsic kinetic parameters describing sugar hydrolysis, key reactions occurring in the softening phase of biomass fast pyrolysis that are too often overlooked. It is proposed to integrate this experimental kinetic information to complete biomass fast pyrolysis models to take into consideration the solvent-like reactional environment.

Abstract:A new high-temperature flow reactor experiment utilizing the powerful molecular beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) technique for detailed observation of gas phase kinetics in reacting flows is presented. The reactor design provides a consequent extension of the experimental portfolio of validation experiments for combustion reaction kinetics. Temperatures up to 1800 K are applicable by three individually controlled temperature zones with this atmospheric pressure flow reactor. Detailed speciation data are obtained using the sensitive MBMS technique, providing in situ access to almost all chemical species involved in the combustion process, including highly reactive species such as radicals. Strategies for quantifying the experimental data are presented alongside a careful analysis of the characterization of the experimental boundary conditions to enable precise numeric reproduction of the experimental results. The general capabilities of this new analytical tool for the investigation of reacting flows are demonstrated for a selected range of conditions, fuels, and applications. A detailed dataset for the well-known gaseous fuels, methane and ethylene, is provided and used to verify the experimental approach. Furthermore, application for liquid fuels and fuel components important for technical combustors like gas turbines and engines is demonstrated. Besides the detailed investigation of novel fuels and fuel components, the wide range of operation conditions gives access to extended combustion topics, such as super rich conditions at high temperature important for gasification processes, or the peroxy chemistry governing the low temperature oxidation regime. These demonstrations are accompanied by a first kinetic modeling approach, examining the opportunities for model validation purposes.

Abstract:A novel non-silicon MEMS calorimetric gas flow sensor is presented. The sensor consists of a metal sensing/heating array placed over a glass substrate and a polyimide layer for passivation. Both the anti-pressure and anti- impact performance is enhanced by using a glass solid substrate instead of a common silicon suspending structure. This merit widens the application range of micro calorimetric sensors from millimeter- or sub-millimeter-tubes to industrial 50 mm-tubes. Both the three-element calorimetric mode and the two-element calorimetric mode were operated and calibrated on an industrial gas calibration system. It is shown that the measuring range of the prototype reaches up to 0-37.5 m3/h. Both Characteristics and optimization methods of the two calorimetric modes are discussed respectively and comparison of the two calorimetric modes is also included.

Abstract:The need for fast and comprehensive characterization of biocatalysts has pushed the development of new screening platforms based on microfluidics, capable of monitoring several parameters simultaneously, with new configurations of liquid handling, sample treatment and sensing. Modular microfluidics allows the integration of these newly developed approaches in a more flexible way towards increasing applicability of the microfluidic chips to different types of biocatalysts and reactions. A highly relevant operation in such a system is biocatalyst inactivation, which can enable the precise control of reaction time by avoiding the continuation of the reaction in another module or connecting tubes. Such control is important when different modules of reactors and/or sensing units are used and changed frequently. Here we describe the development, characterization and application of a module for rapid enzyme inactivation. The thermal inactivation platform developed is compared with a standard benchtop ThermoMixer in terms of inactivation efficiency for glucose oxidase and catalase. A higher activity loss was observed for enzyme inactivation under flow conditions (inactivation achieved at 120 s residence time at 338 K and 20 s residence time at 353 K) which indicated a high heat transfer to the fluid under dynamic conditions. Moreover, partial deactivation of the enzymes was observed for the continuous thermal inactivation module, when activity measurements were performed after 1 and 2 days following inactivation. The thermal inactivation unit presented can be easily integrated into modular microfluidic platforms and can be a useful addition for enzyme characterization and screening.

Abstract:Microfluidic technology has been successfully applied to determine the reaction kinetics relying on its great characteristics including narrow residence time distribution,fast mixing,high mass and heat transfer rates and very low consumption of materials.In this review,the recent progresses about the reaction kinetics measured in microreactors are comprehensively organized,and the kinetic modeling thoughts,determination methods and essential kinetic regularities contained in these studies are summarized according to the reaction types involving nitration,oxidation,hydrogenation,photochemical reaction,polymerization and other reactions.Besides,the significant advances in the innovation of microplatform are also covered,The novel reactor configuration methods were established mainly to achieve rapid and efficient data collection and analysis.Finally,the advantages of microfluidic technology for the kinetic measurement are summarized,and a perspective for the future development is provided.
Flowing Gas Experiments Reveal Mechanistic Details of Interfacial Reactions on a Molecular Level at Knudsen Flow Conditions

Abstract:Knudsen flow experiments and its interpretation in terms of adsorption/desorption kinetics as well as quantitative uptake on substrates of interest is presented together with the description of critical design parameters of the Knudsen Flow Reactor (KFR). Hitherto focused almost exclusively on the uptake phase exposing a virgin substrate to interacting gases, we now extend the experiment and its interpretation to the desorption phase at ambient temperature. We present analytical expressions for different experimental situations in terms of adsorption (k a ), desorption (k d ) and effusion (k e ) rate constants. The measurement of k d leads to surface residence times (1/k d ) obtained under the same experimental conditions as the uptake (k a ) that results in the determination of the Langmuir equilibrium constant K L = k a /k d . We emphasize the interaction of semivolatile organic probe gases and small polar molecules with amorphous carbon and mineral dust materials at ambient temperatures. The latter leads to a molecular characterization scheme based on the use of up to ten different reactive probe gases. After saturation of the uptake of each probe gas this results in a reactivity map of the interface. Several examples are used to underline the broad applicability of the technique such as the silver/air (Ag) interface and the reactivity of TiO 2 materials towards uptake of CO 2 and CH 3 OH. Following characterization of several types of amorphous carbon a model incorporating several structural elements in agreement with the reactive gas titration is proposed. For instance, an interface that is at the same time weakly basic and strongly reducing is composed of pyrones and hydroquinones whose simultaneous occurrence leads to stable free radicals that may play a role in atmospheric chemistry (EPFR). The question is raised what makes an interface hydrophobic in terms of surface functional groups when interacting with small polar molecules such as H 2 O(D 2 O), HCl, NO 2 and NH 2 OH. Multidiagnostic studies of heterogeneous reactions are enabled using stirred-flow reactors (SRF) that are a logical extension of the KFR approach thus relaxing the Knudsen flow requirements. Previous work using SRF on low-temperature substrates such as H 2 O ices is highlighted that may be of interest to the exoplanetary and space sciences community.
Kinetics determination of fast exothermic reactions with infrared thermography in a microreactor

Abstract:In this paper, a microsystem integrated with infrared thermography is developed to measure the kinetics of fast exothermic reactions. The hydrolysis of ethyl acetate is chosen as the model reaction to verify the technique. The activation energy of this reaction is successfully obtained, which agrees well with the literature value. Except for the general method of collecting data from several typical points of the infrared radiation (IR) picture, a strategy called image analysis is applied to obtain the temperature profiles along the reactor by collecting data from the whole IR picture. With the image analysis, this system can generate time-series kinetic data in a single experiment, which is usually challenging for a continuous flow system. The reaction enthalpy of classic neutralization reaction and kinetic parameter of hydrolysis are determined again using the image analysis, showing fewer deviations from literature values. The image analysis technique could provide much more reliable and accurate results with higher efficiency.

Abstract:Here, a microfluidic reactor that is transparent in the mid-wave infrared spectrum with an effective path length of 38 μm is developed for characterisation via operando Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR) thermospectroscopy. This imaging technique couples an infrared (IR) camera with an FTIR spectrometer to quantify heat and mass transfer in the exothermic acid-base reaction between hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The absorbance fields of the reaction are used to simultaneously derive the molar concentration fields of the reactants (HCl and NaOH) and products (sodium chloride [NaCl]) at the microscale through a linear inverse method. The heat generated at the reaction interface is visualised through a thermal field captured from the measured proper emission. Concentration and thermal fields are then compared to an advection-diffusion model for validation. The results proposed in this work present a refined contactless calorimetry process for characterising the heat and mass transport in an acid-base reaction. Further refinement of this work will enable accurate and non-invasive measurements for the enthalpy of reaction in chemical reactions.

Reaction-diffusion dynamics: confrontation between theory and experiment in a microfluidic reactor

Abstract:We confront, quantitatively, the theoretical description of the reaction-diffusion of a second order reaction to experiment. The reaction at work is \ca/CaGreen, and the reactor is a T-shaped microchannel, 10 $\mu$m deep, 200 $\mu$m wide, and 2 cm long. The experimental measurements are compared with the two-dimensional numerical simulation of the reaction-diffusion equations. We find good agreement between theory and experiment. From this study, one may propose a method of measurement of various quantities, such as the kinetic rate of the reaction, in conditions yet inaccessible to conventional methods.

Abstract:A prototype of an innovative isothermal calorespirometer was developed to measure simultaneously heat production rate (calorimetry) and CO 2 evolution rate (respirometry) in real-time in a static batch vessel system. The relationship between these two variables forms the calorespirometric ratio, which serves as a crucial indicator for metabolic processes and allows for the differentiation of various metabolic pathways in simple (pure culture) and complex (e.g. soil) biological systems. The heat production rate is gauged by a thermoelectric generator situated at the bottom of the measuring channel (calorimetric unit), while the CO 2 evolution rate is monitored through a conductometric cell fixed on the lid of the channel (respirometric unit). The prototype is designed with a twin configuration, featuring both sample and reference channels. The spatial separation of the calorimetric and respirometric measuring units ensures the simultaneous measurement of the two rates from a single sample without the occurrence of crosstalk effects between the signals. The electrical calibration of the calorimetric unit reveals heat losses (approx. 30 %) and response times (approx. 6 min) that are comparable to those of established isothermal calorimeters. In parallel, growth experiments conducted with baker`s yeast demonstrate the applicability of the calorespirometer prototype to biological systems.

Abstract:Calorimetry is a general method for determination of the rates of zero-order processes, but analysis of the data for the rate constant and reaction enthalpy is difficult because these occur as a product in the rate equation so evaluation of one requires knowledge of the other. Three methods for evaluation of both parameters, without prior knowledge, are illustrated with examples and compared with literature data. Method 1 requires the reaction to be studied in two buffers with different enthalpies of ionization. Method 2 is based on calculation of reaction enthalpy from group additivity functions. Method 3 applies when reaction progresses to completion. The methods are applied to the enzymatic hydrolysis of urea, the hydrolysis of acetylsalicylic acid, and the photodegradation of nifedipine, respectively.

Characterization of reaction enthalpy and kinetics in a microscale flow platform
