Abstract:Precise knowledge of gas diffusivity in liquids is critical for describing complex multiphase reaction systems. Here we present a high-throughput flow concept to measure gas diffusivity in liquids. This strategy takes advantage of the tube-in-tube reactor design whereby semipermeable Teflon AF-2400 tubes facilitate fast mass transfer between gas and liquid without directly contacting the two fluids. Coupled pseudosteady-state flux balances over the gas and liquid describe the gas dissolution rate and corresponding diffusivity with the aid of a single gas flow meter and a continuously ramped liquid flow rate. This in situ method demonstrates excellent accuracy in diffusion coefficient measurements, with less than 5% deviation from established techniques.

Abstract:An automated flow platform based on a tube-in-tube contactor and micro-packed bed reactor is developed to measure the kinetics of gas-liquid-solid hydrogenation reactions. The liquid flowing in the inner tube of the tube-in-tube contactor is rapidly saturated to ensure a constant H(2)concentration before entering the micro-packed bed, which transforms the gas-liquid-solid system into a liquid-solid system. A ramping strategy is adopted in which the continuously varied residence time and the corresponding conversion data are obtained in a single experiment. Two reactions including hydrogenation of alpha-methylstyrene and nitrobenzene are chosen to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this automated platform. Varying the flow rate ramping shows that accurate kinetic determination requires a specific range of flow rate ramps. A kinetic curve of conversionversusresidence time (more than ten thousand data points) can be obtained in a single experiment within 50 min. The kinetic parameters obtained with this strategy agree well with literature values. The automated flow platform with flow rate ramping enables accurate determination of gas-liquid-solid reaction kinetics with higher efficiency and lower reagent cost compared with other methods.

Abstract:Data on the solubilities of gases in liquids are foundational for assessing a variety of multiphase separations and gas liquid reactions. Taking advantage of the tube-in-tube reactor design built with semipermeable Teflon AF-2400 tubes, liquids can be rapidly saturated without direct contacting of gas and liquid. The gas solubility can be determined by performing steady-state flux balances of both the gas and liquid flowing into the reactor system. Using this type of reactor, a fully automated strategy has been developed for the rapid in situ measurement of gas solubilities in liquids. The developed strategy enables precise gas solubility measurements within 2-5 min compared with 4-5 h using conventional methods. This technique can be extended to the discrete multipoint steady-state and continuous ramped-multipoint data acquisition methods. The accuracy of this method has been validated against several gas liquid systems, showing less than 2% deviation from known values. Finally, this strategy has been extended to measure the temperature dependence of gas solubilities in situ and to estimate the local enthalpy of dissolution across a defined temperature range.

Abstract:In this work, an unsteady-state strategy for rapid measurement of gas diffusivity in liquid is proposed, which has a quick perturbation of the liquid flow rate in inner tube for obtaining the change of gas flow rate across the membrane with time. The strategy has taken full advantages of the tube-in-tube reactor that possesses a high permeability Teflon AF-2400 membrane to accelerate the diffusion rate of gas to liquid without direct contact between the two phases. With a developed mathematical model fitting the recorded variation of gas flow rate with time, the gas diffusivity in liquid can be determined within 0.5-3 min compared with the conventional methods of 4-14 hr. In addition, the strategy is demonstrated with several gas-liquid systems (O-2-DMSO, CO2-[Emim] [NTf2] and CO2-[Bmim] [BF4]) with varied viscosities and temperatures, showing a good agreement with literature values with less than 10% deviation.

Abstract:In this work, an online optical system for the parameters measurement of the gas-liquid Taylor flow in a 4.0mm-inner-diameter small channel was developed. The presented method was able to measure the bubble velocity, bubble frequency, bubble and slug lengths, and determine the void fraction of the gas-liquid Taylor flow in small channels. A homogeneous flow model was introduced to simplify the analysis and parameter calculation of the gas-liquid Taylor flow. Experimental results showed that the presented optical method was effective and well applied to the online measurement or monitoring the parameters of Taylor flow in small channels. The relative error of the measured bubble velocity and void fraction were less than ±5% and ±10%, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, the continuous tube-in-tube reactor based on the Teflon AF membrane is emerging as a powerful toolkit for accelerating gas-liquid mass transfer and reaction rate. Because of its large gas-liquid interfacial area and short mass transfer distance, the reactor can allow a fast gas-liquid mass transfer without direct contact between gas and liquid phases, offering an efficient and safe platform for implementing gas-liquid reaction and rapid determination of gas-liquid parameters. In this review, a detailed description and construction method of this reactor are provided. Then, the recent advancements of the tube-in-tube reactor in fundamental studies and practical applications in gas-involved chemical reactions and biosynthetic processes are discussed. Finally, a perspective on future potential applications of such flow reactors is provided.

Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of a molecular tracer based laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer for measuring fluid velocity profile in microfluidics. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of this measurement system, the velocity profiles of the cylindrical and rectangular microchannels are measured, respectively. We compare our experimental results with theoretical prediction. The theoretical prediction shows a good consistency with practical measurement results. The spatial resolutions are analyzed and validated. Finally, the error source of the presented system is analyzed, which makes it possible to compensate some error quantitatively and guides the application of this system.

Abstract:A new method for the calorimetric characterization of high-energetic, fast reactions in flow mode was developed. The use of an engineered flow reactor in combination with a process modeling software allowed the deconvolution of the reaction enthalpy from space-resolved temperature profiles. The new procedure was verified in a comparison with a conventional batch calorimeter and subsequently implemented for the thermal characterization of an organolithium flow process. The information collected for this reaction successfully supported a scale-up to the pilot plant. Overall, the new approach resulted in being superior when compared with established procedures, enabling the generation of precise calorimetric data in an accurate scale-down flow device.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Knudsen flow experiments and its interpretation in terms of adsorption/desorption kinetics as well as quantitative uptake on substrates of interest is presented together with the description of critical design parameters of the Knudsen Flow Reactor (KFR). Hitherto focused almost exclusively on the uptake phase exposing a virgin substrate to interacting gases, we now extend the experiment and its interpretation to the desorption phase at ambient temperature. We present analytical expressions for different experimental situations in terms of adsorption (k a ), desorption (k d ) and effusion (k e ) rate constants. The measurement of k d leads to surface residence times (1/k d ) obtained under the same experimental conditions as the uptake (k a ) that results in the determination of the Langmuir equilibrium constant K L = k a /k d . We emphasize the interaction of semivolatile organic probe gases and small polar molecules with amorphous carbon and mineral dust materials at ambient temperatures. The latter leads to a molecular characterization scheme based on the use of up to ten different reactive probe gases. After saturation of the uptake of each probe gas this results in a reactivity map of the interface. Several examples are used to underline the broad applicability of the technique such as the silver/air (Ag) interface and the reactivity of TiO 2 materials towards uptake of CO 2 and CH 3 OH. Following characterization of several types of amorphous carbon a model incorporating several structural elements in agreement with the reactive gas titration is proposed. For instance, an interface that is at the same time weakly basic and strongly reducing is composed of pyrones and hydroquinones whose simultaneous occurrence leads to stable free radicals that may play a role in atmospheric chemistry (EPFR). The question is raised what makes an interface hydrophobic in terms of surface functional groups when interacting with small polar molecules such as H 2 O(D 2 O), HCl, NO 2 and NH 2 OH. Multidiagnostic studies of heterogeneous reactions are enabled using stirred-flow reactors (SRF) that are a logical extension of the KFR approach thus relaxing the Knudsen flow requirements. Previous work using SRF on low-temperature substrates such as H 2 O ices is highlighted that may be of interest to the exoplanetary and space sciences community.

Abstract:In order to simulate gas-solids flows with complex geometry, the boundary element method was incorporated into the implementation of a combined model of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method. The resulting method was employed to simulate hydrodynamics in a fluidized bed with immersed tubes. The transient simulation results showed particle and bubble dynamics. The bubble coalescence and break-up behavior when passing the immersed tubes was successfully predicted. The gassolid flow pattern in the fluidized bed is changed greatly because of the immersed tubes. As particles and gas are come in contact with the immersed tubes, the gas bubbles will be deformed. The collisions between particles and tubes will make the tubes surrounded by air pockets most of the time and this is unfavorable for the heat transfer between particles and tubes.

Abstract:Gas-liquid mass transfer in micropacked bed reactors is characterized with an automated platform integrated with in-line Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This setup enables screening of a multidimensional parameter space underlying absorption with chemical reaction. Volumetric gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficients (k(L)a) are determined for the model reaction of CO2 absorption in a methyl diethanolamine/water solution. Parametric studies are conducted varying gas and liquid superficial velocities, packed bed dimensions and packing particle sizes. The results show that k(L)a values are in the range of 0.12 approximate to 0.39 s(-1), which is about one-to-two orders of magnitude larger than those of conventional trickle beds. Abstract:Microfluidic technology has been successfully applied to determine the reaction kinetics relying on its great characteristics including narrow residence time distribution,fast mixing,high mass and heat transfer rates and very low consumption of materials.In this review,the recent progresses about the reaction kinetics measured in microreactors are comprehensively organized,and the kinetic modeling thoughts,determination methods and essential kinetic regularities contained in these studies are summarized according to the reaction types involving nitration,oxidation,hydrogenation,photochemical reaction,polymerization and other reactions.Besides,the significant advances in the innovation of microplatform are also covered,The novel reactor configuration methods were established mainly to achieve rapid and efficient data collection and analysis.Finally,the advantages of microfluidic technology for the kinetic measurement are summarized,and a perspective for the future development is provided.

Abstract:In this paper, a slip ratio based calculation model was developed to predict the gas mass flow rate under high gas volume fraction conditions, which was verified against an experimental investigation with a Venturi meter and a gamma ray attenuation system. Experiments showed that the new model could accurately predict the gas mass flow rate with the relative errors less than ±10％ when the gas volume fraction ranging from 92％ to 100％.

Abstract:Flow reactor models for gas-liquid reaction systems are proposed in this paper based on the penetration theory in the isothermal case. The mass transfer mechanism accompanied by a chemical irreversible first-order reaction is mathematically treated in a new way in order to use its results to develop reactor design models conveniently. Analytical solutions can be obtained for the desgin equation system involving linear differential equations by using of either the eigenvalues or the Laplace-transformation and the superposition of the system. In addition, an iteration procedure is given to solve the nonlinear differential equation system numerically. Comparisons of the results from the analytical and numerical solutions are also made graphically.

Abstract:Here, we present a strategy for rapid measurement of gas solubility in ionic liquids based on a simple configuration of tube-in-tube reactor. Ionic liquids can be rapidly saturated without direct contact of gas and liquid via a semipermeable Teflon AF-2400 inner tubing in the reactor, and the gas solubility can be easily determined by a steady-state flux balance of both gas and liquid flowing into the reactor. Solubility data of gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2), ethylene (C2H4), and ethane (C2H6) in several ionic liquids ([Emim][NTf2], [Omim]-[NTf2], [Bmim][BF4], [Bmim][PF6], and [Omim][NTf2]) were successfully determined at temperatures between 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C and low pressure (no higher than 8 bar), showing less than 8% deviation, compared with the literature values. A single gas solubility data point can be obtained within 10 min, showing high efficiency compared with conventional methods (548 h). Finally, the application scope and limitations of this method were discussed.
