Abstract:Laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is the key parameter in the transmission of high power laser. Research on LIDT can help us to determine the scope of use of optical devices and thereby optimize the performance. We use the finite element method (FEM) to study the LIDT of high-purity silica fiber with 1064 nm laser. We find that the results of temperature distribution calculated by ray optics and wave optics show similar tendency. With the increase of laser fluences through the incident surface, the thermal effects become higher and laser damage gradually appears at the surface. We calculate the temperature and thermal stress displacements distribution when the laser fluences surpass LIDT. Our research can provide systematic FEM simulations for the LIDT of fibers.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is investigated at several wavelengths in the high-purity silica optical fiber. The finite element method (FEM) is used to study transmission mode, LIDT, temperature distribution, and thermal stress distribution of the fiber. Our results show that the center of the front surface is subjected to severe thermal effects under laser irradiation and consequently, and it is susceptible damage. The variations in temperature and thermal stress are identified as increasing with laser fluences, which show a similar tendency. When laser fluences surpass the LIDT, such as 35 GW / cm2, the temperature at the front surface center shows a sudden growth and the melting damage appears, and no stress damage occurs at this time. Notably, the melting effect of high purity fused silica optical fiber is simulated by numerical calculation based on ray optics for the first time. Our research can provide systematic FEM simulations for the LIDT of silica optical fibers.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage is a bottleneck problem that restricts the development of high-power laser facilities. According to the theory of carriers contributed thermal conductivity, we established a 2-D thermal diffusion model for fused silica. This model provides a detailed description of the dynamic evolution of the temperature field distribution during laser pulse loading. The heat deposition core, which consists of the defect and the high-temperature fused silica, continuously absorbs the laser energy. This results in forming a solid absorption wavefront that diffuses in the anti-laser transmission direction. The results of the numerical simulation and the experimental results show that the evolution law of the heat deposition core in the energy deposition process is directly related to the final damage state. According to the evolution characteristics of the instantaneous peak temperature and its position of the heat deposition core, we calculated the critical parameter αth, whose amplitude indicates the maximum absorption capacity of the defects that optical elements can carry. Further numerical simulations established the mathematical correlation of the αth with the laser pulse waveform. The results of the study provide an important theoretical basis for predicting and evaluating the laser-induced damage of optical elements under high-power laser radiation.

Abstract:The influences of surface impurities, etching time, subsurface defects and the width to depth ratio on the laser damage threshold of fused silica optics in the traditional grinding and polishing process are systematically analyzed by laser damage experiments. Results show that the laser damage thresholds are 21. 6J/cm2 and 11. 28J/cm2 for wiped and non-wiped optics, respectively. The laser damage threshold is greatly reduced by the surface impurities, while the laser damage threshold at the defect area is significantly lower than that at no defect area. The increase of the etching time increases the surface roughness and defect size of the workpiece, which leads to a significant decrease in the laser damage threshold of the optics, so a reasonable choice of chemical etching time is required. The incident light field can be modulated by subsurface defects, resulting in local area reflected light, scattered light and incident light superimposed on each other, eventually leading to laser damage of optical material. The width to depth ratio of the scratch increases with the etching time, which can gradually weaken the scratch on the light field modulation, thereby the probability of occurrence of laser damage for fused silica optics is reduced.

Abstract:The subsurface damage and metal impurities have been the main laser damage precursors of fused silica while subjected to high power laser irradiation. Light field enhancement and thermal absorption were used to explain the appearance of damage pits while the laser energy is far smaller than the energy that can reach the intrinsic threshold of fused silica. For fused silica optics manufactured by magnetorheological finishing or advanced mitigation process, no scratch-related damage site occurs can be found on the surface. In this work, we implemented a photothermal absorption technique based on thermal lens method to characterize the subsurface defects of fused silica optics. The pump beam is CW 532 nm wavelength laser. The probe beam is a He-Ne laser. They are collinear and focused through the same objective. When pump beam pass through the sample, optical absorption induces the local temperature rise. The lowest absorptance that we can detect is about the order of magnitude of 0.01 ppm. When pump beam pass through the sample, optical absorption induces the local temperature rise. The photothermal absorption value of fused silica samples range from 0.5 to 10 ppm. The damage densities of the samples were plotted. The damage threshold of samples at 8J/cm(2) were gived to show laser damage performance of fused silica. The results show that there is a strong correlation between the thermal absorption and laser damage density. The photothermal absorption technique can be used to predict and evaluate the laser damage performance of fused silica optics.

Abstract:Based on the finite element analysis method, establishment of a three dimensional fused silica lens model under the laser irradiation, and simulated the ideal fused silica surface temperature field and thermal stress field distribution situation, then the influences of subsurface deficiency on fused silica's laser damage threshold (LDT) were analyzed, which include scratch and impurity. It is found that the deficiencies in subsurface may affect the distribution of temperature field and thermal stress field of the fused silica surface, which makes the injected laser beams energy centralize on a small area around the deficiencies, thus leading to stress cracking of fused silica and LDT reduction.

Abstract:The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is one of the important methods to determine the mitigation efficiency of mitigated damage sites in fused silica optics. In this work, two sizes of laser beam with a wavelength of 355 nm and a pulse width of 6.3 ns are used to test the LIDTs and properties of mitigated damage sites. Meanwhile, the R-on-1 average threshold and threshold distribution are used to analyze damage behavior of mitigated sites. It is found that the R-on-1 average threshold shows an S-shaped curve and the threshold distribution obeys a normal law for the mitigated damage sites, which is similar to the law of pristine substrates reported before. The LIDT discrepancy of mitigated sites tested with different sizes of laser beam is attributed to the spot-size effect of the test laser beam, i.e., the LIDT of the mitigated site increases with decreasing test laser spot size. It is shown that most damage occurs at the edge of the laser affected zone, which could be ascribed to the weak location between laser affected and unaffected zones. Finally, the correlations between damage size and the laser fluence which causes damage initiation or damage growth are investigated for the pristine substrate and mitigated sites, and can be fitted by an exponential law.

Abstract:Although no optically visible damage is produced in the fused silica under laser irradiation below its laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), defect proliferation may occur due to the evolution of its internal atomic structure. The escalation in defect content leads to heightened absorption, and resulting in the degradation of the optical performance of the optics. In recent decades, there have been a lot of experimental studies on laser-induced damage and laser conditioning, but there is still a great lack of in-depth understanding and theoretical analysis of the evolution process of point defects in fused silica. In this study, the emphasis is on the evolution of point defects and fatigue damage in fused silica under multi-pulse nanosecond laser irradiation. To address this, a point-defect evolution model is developed, and the coupled evolution law of temperature and defect during laser irradiation is derived by integrating it with a numerical model. The results demonstrate that the model effectively predicts the defect evolution of fused silica under laser irradiation and facilitates the prediction of fatigue damage. It is revealed that the rate of defect evolution in fused silica is more influenced by temperature than stress, and a temperature threshold can be used to judge the condition of damage occurrence. Furthermore, through an analysis of the effect of laser fluence on defect relaxation rate, a defect relaxation method employing variable laser fluence was proposed. This study provides a reliable theoretical analysis method for understanding the fatigue damage induced by multi-pulse laser irradiation in fused silica and offers a new perspective for the annealing treatment of point defects in fused silica. Abstract:Laser-induced damage is a key lifetime limiter for optics in high-power laser facility. Damage initiation and growth under 351 nm high-fluence laser irradiation are observed on larger-aperture fused silica optics. The input surface of one fused silica component is damaged most severely and an explanation is presented. Obscurations and the area of a scratch on it are found to grow exponentially with the shot number. The area of damage site grows linearly. Micrographs of damage sites support the micro-explosion damage model which could be used to qualitatively explain the phenomena.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage threshold is the main limitation for fused silica optics in high-power laser applications. The existence of various defects near the surface is the key factor for the degradation of the threshold. In this work, the photoluminescence spectra at different regions of the damaged and recovered fused silica samples are recorded to analyze the correlation between photoluminescence of surface defects and laser-induced damage threshold. The experimental data concluded the inverse proportional correlation between fluorescence and laser-induced damage threshold value. The weak photoluminescence is the guarantee of the high laser-induced damage threshold, and then the higher local Si nanocluster concentration corresponds with the higher laser-induced damage threshold value for the fused silica optics after CO2 laser treatment. The investigation reveals that photoluminescence measurement can be employed to check the quality of pristine fused silica and evaluate the tendency of the laser-induced damage threshold value. The current results are helpful for understanding the evolution of interaction from CO2 laser treatment and fused silica optics and can provide the guide of process technology for the high quality of fused silica optics.

Abstract:The damage problem of fused silica has always been one of the bottlenecks limiting the energy output of the high-power laser system. For optical components, the ionization breakdown by laser is the main factor causing damage, especially for laser plasma shock waves, which can cause large-scale fracture damage in fused silica. In this paper, the fused silica damage experiment was induced by a nanosecond laser, and the damage morphology of fused silica in the thickness range of 0.8–5.0 mm was obtained under the action of a 1–20 pulse. The damage size of fused silica decreases as the thickness of the material increases until the thickness of the material is greater than, or equal to, 1.4 mm. On the basis of theoretical analysis of a plasma shock wave, the coupling and transmission of shock wave in fused silica were studied by finite element method, and the magnitude and direction distribution of stress were obtained. By analyzing the fracture characteristics and Raman spectra of the three damaged regions of fused silica, the structural differences of a range of damage regions are analyzed, and the relationship between the macroscopic damage of fused silica and the microstructure is explained. The research results can provide a reference for understanding the characteristics and mechanism of damage characteristics induced by laser plasma shock wave.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage of fused silica optics at 351 nm is a key factor limiting the output energy of high-power laser facility, especially the damage growth process. A comprehensive understanding of its damage growth behavior is of critical importance for high-power laser facility. Thus we study the laser-induced damage growth on the exit surface of fused silica under the subsequent illumination of 5 ns square pulses at 351 nm on a large-aperture high-power laser facility. Experiment is conducted with a 36 cm thick UV grade fused silica focus lens in clean atmosphere and at room temperature. 56 laser shots of 3 fluence in a range from 0.1 J/cm2 to 8.1 J/cm2 are fired during the experiment. And the damage initiation process and growth process are monitored and recorded with an online optics damage inspection instrument which has an optical resolution of about 50 m. Experimental results demonstrate that the sizes of exit-surface damage sites exponentially or linearly grow with laser shots and the damage growth rate increases with laser fluence. However, it is found that even under the same laser conditions the damage grow rate is not a fixed value, which means that besides the laser fluence other parameters also influence the damage grow process. In order to highlight some tendencies, we consider the single-shot damage growth rate and calculate the average of inside fluence bins. Statistical analysis shows that smaller sites tend to grow with larger growth rates than larger sites under the irradiation of the same laser fluence. This result indicates that damage growth rate is influenced by both laser fluence and damage site size. It suggests that the damage growth rule needs to be incorporated into a size-dependent growth effect. The result that higher growth rates are obtained for small damage sites may be related to the damage growth mechanism of fused silica. Damage crater of fused silica consists of a central core and numerous surrounding cracks. The defects in the central core absorb laser energy and yield plasma, then the plasma pressure will open the cracks on the periphery of the crater and lead to lateral and axial expansion of cracks which can be identified as damage growth. The fact that smaller sites grow faster than larger sites implies that smaller sites more efficiently couple laser energy into fracture energy. Our results have important implications for both the prediction of fused silica optics lifetime and the fundamental understanding of laser damage mechanism.

Abstract:The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of fused silica is affected by laser field intensity modulation and laser energy absorption. In this paper, the subsurface damage (SSD) density and morphology are detected by the small-angle taper polishing method. The modulation effect of SSD morphology on the incident laser/electric field is analyzed by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. Finally, the LIDT of the taper polished surface is tested to analyze the relationship among LIDT, SSD density, and SSD morphology, and the results show a high correlation. A reliable regression model is obtained based on the results, which shows that LIDT is inversely proportional to SSD density and the light intensity enhancement factor (LIEF).

Abstract:The growth of fused silica surface damage poses a high risk in operating high-power laser devices, with complex physical mechanisms related not only to the wavelength, pulse width, fluence of incident pulse lasers, but also to initial damage size and material properties. With low-temporal coherence light (LTCL) increasingly applied in high-power laser-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF), LTCL-induced damage growth has become a bottleneck limiting output power improvements. This paper analyzes LTCL damage growth characteristics and mechanisms on fused silica surfaces, obtaining its damage growth coefficient and threshold. By analyzing chemical composition variation, electric field of initial damage, and comparing the damage growth threshold of artificial initial damage, the mechanism of surface damage growth is investigated. This research provides reliable information for estimating fused silica lifetime in high-power LTCL devices and contributes to understanding LTCL properties. Subsurface Damage Properties of Nano Scratches in Fused Silica Optics

Abstract:To enhance the laser-induced damage threshold of fused silica optics , the impact of scratches on laser-induced damage is analyzed in this paper.Nano-indentation experiments were carried out to differentiate a variety of plastic-brittle scratches.Then finite difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm is adopted to simulate the modulation of light occurring in scratches of different depths and different width-depth ratios.Finally, the paper carried out R-on-1 laser-induced damage threshold test on typical scratches.Experimental results show that plastic scratches with the depth of 53 nm have little effect on the laser damage, and the scratches in plastic-brittle transition section induce damage with a certain probability.The damage threshold of brittle scratch is far below the threshold of substrate, which is 43.1% of the substrate's.Thus, brittle scratch is an important factor to reduce the laser-induced damage threshold of fused silica optics.The results indicate that the experimental data and the theoretical simulation show a good consistency.

Abstract:Laser induced damage in optical components is a limiting factor to the improvement of high-power laser. Using K9 glass irradiated with the CO2 continuous-wave laser as an example, the thermal and mechanical damage mechanism of optical material induced by continuous-wave laser is investigated. The equations of heat conduction and thermoelastic dynamics are solved through integral-transform method. Transient distribution of temperature field and thermal stress field is described. It is found that the definition of the thermal diffusion length is not applicable when incident laser is Gaussian beam; therefore, the dependence of the site of the maximal thermal stress on irradiation time is derived by curve fitting method, then the analytical solution of the damage threshold intensity is calculated. Because the stress damage threshold intensity is smaller than the melting damage threshold intensity, permanent damage in optical material is produced when circumference stress exceeds the tensile strength. The damage morphology of K9 glass induced by laser is proved to be cleavage burst. The model exhibits good agreement with the experiment result.
Damage Induced 0n Fused Silica by Fundamental Frequency and Third Harmonic of Nd:YAG Laser

Abstract:The damage processes of fused silica under the fundamental frequency and third harmonic of Nd:YAG laser were studied with instantaneous scattering pulses measurements via fast photodiodes and high bandwidth oscilloscope.The optical micrographs of ablated craters on fused silica surface were also analyzed.The sharp increase of scattered light of pump pulse was assumed to be the damage precursor,therefore,the damage started nearly at the peak of the pump pulse.Fundamental frequency laser induced-damage of fused silica began before that of the third harmonic laser.The plasmas flash due to ion-electron recombination occurred about 21 ns after the peak of pump pulses.Based on Keldysh theory,the photoionization rate of fused silica vs laser intensity under 355 and 1 064 nm laser was calculated.The damage mechanisms under ns laser were also discussed.

Abstract:The micro sub-surface cracks of fused silica are observed by AFM and optical microscope.Due to the morphology characters, the cracks are sorted into three types: Boussinesq-point-force crack(BPFC),Hertzian-conical scratch(HCS) and plastic indent(PI).The laser induced damage thresholds of the cracks are measured.The damage mechanism is also discussed.The results show that the damage threshold of sharp tip BPFC is less than 2.0 J/cm2,that of HCS get to 2.6 J/cm2,and that of PI with large shape change is 2.8 J/cm2.The laser induced damage threshold of PI with small change is parallel with that of perfect surface.It is obvious that BPFC and HCS with depth more than 1 μm are the main factors to decrease the laser induced damage threshold of fused silica.
