Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-based femtosecond laser source, which can deliver 37 MHz, similar to 100 fs laser pulses tunable from 920 nm to 1030 nm with up to 10 nJ pulse energy. Pumped by an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser, a short piece of tapered photonic crystal fiber with lower dispersion was used to generate self-phase-modulation filtered for the tunable pulses. We believe that this new type of high-energy ultrafast fiber laser source can be an ideal solution for the two-photon fluorescence microscopy applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:We have demonstrated widely tunable Yb:fiber-based laser sources, aiming to replace Ti:sapphire lasers for the nJ-level ultrafast applications, especially for the uses of nonlinear light microscopy. We investigated the influence of different input parameters to obtain an expansive spectral broadening, enabled by self-phase modulation and further reshaped by self-steepening, in the normal dispersion regime before the fiber damage. We also discussed the compressibility and intensity fluctuations of the demonstrated pulses, to reach the transform-limited duration with a very low intensity noise. Most importantly, we have demonstrated clear two-photon fluorescence images from UV-absorbing fluorophores to deep red dye stains.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact watt-level all polarization-maintaining (PM) femtosecond fiber laser source at 1100 nm. The fiber laser source is seeded by an all PM fiber mode-locked laser employing a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The seed laser can generate stable pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 40.71 MHz with a signal-to-noise rate of >100 dB and an integrated relative intensity noise of only ~0.061%. After two-stage external amplification and pulse compression, an output power of ~1.47 W (corresponding to a pulse energy of ~36.1 nJ) and a pulse duration of ~251 fs are obtained. The 1100 nm femtosecond fiber laser is then employed as the excitation light source for multicolor multi-photon fluorescence microscopy of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells stably expressing red fluorescent proteins.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact ultrafast source centered at 850 nm with >200 nm bandwidth (full width at half-maximum) based on a 3 GHz Yb-fiber master-oscillator-power-amplifier system. The output pulses (with up to 13 W average power) from the laser system are coupled into short (<50 mm) pieces of photonic crystal fibers to excite broadband fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation; the resulting broad phase-matching bandwidth due to short fiber length produces an upconverted spectrum spanning in the wavelength range of 750-950 nm with average power of 94, 184, and 380 mW for fiber length of 28, 37, and 48 mm, respectively. The spectrum generated from the 37 mm fiber is then dechirped by eight double-chirped mirrors, leading to compressed pulses ~14 fs in duration. Such an ultrafast source is a promising substitute of multigigahertz mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers for applications in optical frequency metrology and multiphoton coherent microscopy.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber all-optical high-speed wavelength-swept laser source at 2 μm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 33 nm and repetition rate of 18.4 MHz, by using optical time-stretch technology, which to our knowledge is the first report of a 2 μm wavelength-swept source without any bulk, free-space optical elements. The light source is built upon a nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locked femtosecond oscillator. A chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is employed to realize the all-optical wavelength sweeping. In comparison with the commonly used dispersive fibers, the CFBG possesses outstanding power efficiency and temporal stability, especially for wavelength sweeping in the 2.0 μm wavelength regime. A two-stage fiber amplifier system is utilized to boost the output power up to 1.01 W. This all-fiberized mode-locked swept source with high speed and high stability shows great potential as a valuable source for various spectroscopy applications and swept source optical coherence tomography, particularly for highly scattering medium with low water content.

Abstract:A 74 nm, 2.5 GHz stable supercontinuum pulse source has been demonstrated with a gain-switched DFB laser as pump source. The stable, narrow pulses with mean pulsewidth of 4.8 ps are filtered out across the whole SC bandwidth. The experimental results verify some theoretical simulations.

Abstract:We report all-fiber tunable ultrahigh-repetition-rate sub-picosecond pulse sources around 1550 nm. The sources are based on cascaded four wave mixing in an erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber without extra nonlinear fiber. They are seeded by a spacing-tunable phase conjugated dual-wavelength parametric light source centered at 1550 nm. The repetition rate of the pulse sources can be tuned continuously in the range of 0.75-2.75 THz by adjusting the wavelength spacing of the dual-wavelength light source. We use auto-correlator to measure the waveform of the pulses. The duration of the pulses is about 100 fs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a versatile technique for generating continuously wavelength-tunable laser waveforms, with mJ pulse energies and ultrashort pulse durations down to few-cycle in the ultraviolet C and visible spectral ranges. Using the processes of self-phase modulation or Raman-induced spectral broadening, we substantially expand the spectrum of a femtosecond 1030 nm Yb:CaF$_{2}$ laser, allowing for an extensive wavelength-tunability of the second and fourth harmonics of the laser within the visible and ultraviolet C spectral regions at 460-580 nm and 230-290 nm. In addition, our approach exploits nonlinearly assisted self-compression in the second harmonic upconversion of the spectrally broadened infrared pulses with high-order dispersion. This results in 8-30 femtosecond pulses in the visible with an intensity enhancement of up to 30 times. Such an ultrashort visible and ultraviolet C source is ideal for investigating ultrafast dynamics in molecules, solids, and bio and nano systems. Furthermore, this tunable light source enables the generation of bright, narrow-bandwidth, continuously wavelength-tunable, coherent light in the extreme ultraviolet to soft X-ray spectral region. Theoretically, the X-ray pulse structure can consist of sub-200 as pulse trains, making such a source highly suitable for dynamic multidimensional imaging. This includes coherent diffractive imaging of ferromagnetic nanostructures where resonant X-ray scattering is essential, as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopies of advanced quantum materials at pico-nanometer spatial and atto-femtosecond temporal scales.

Abstract:Compact and high-energy femtosecond fiber lasers operating around 900-950 nm are desirable for multiphoton microscopy. Here, we demonstrate a >40 nJ, sub-100 fs, wavelength-tunable ultrafast laser system based on chirped pulse amplification (CPA) in thulium-doped fiber and second-harmonic generation (SHG) technology. Through effective control of the nonlinear effect in the CPA process, we have obtained 92-fs pulses at 1903 nm with an average power of 0.89 W and a pulse energy of 81 nJ. By frequency doubling, 95-fs pulses at 954 nm with an average power of 0.46 W and a pulse energy of 42 nJ have been generated. In addition, our system can also achieve tunable wavelength from 932 nm to 962 nm (frequency doubled from 1863 nm to 1919 nm). A pulse width of ∼100 fs and sufficient pulse energy are ensured over the entire tuning range. Finally, we applied the laser in a two-photon microscope and obtained superior imaging results. Due to a relatively low repetition rate (∼ 10 MHz), similar imaging quality can be achieved at significantly reduced average power compared with a commercial 80 MHz laser system. At the same time, the lower average power is helpful in limiting the thermal load to the samples. It is believed that such a setup, with its well-balanced optical characteristics and compact footprint, provides an ideal source for two-photon microscopy.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dispersion-tuned fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO)-based swept source with a sweep rate of 40 kHz and a wavelength tuning range of 109 nm around 1550 nm. The cumulative speed exceeds 4,000,000 nm/s. The FOPO is pumped by a sinusoidally modulated pump, which is driven by a clock sweeping linearly from 1 to 1.0006 GHz. A spool of dispersion-compensating fiber is added inside the cavity to perform dispersion tuning. The instantaneous linewidth is 0.8 nm without the use of any wavelength selective element inside the cavity. 1 GHz pulses with pulse width of 150 ps are generated.

Abstract:We report a 790–1000 nm tunable femtosecond laser source by second harmonic generation (SHG) of a 1580–2000 nm soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) fiber laser. The SSFS fiber laser with an all polarization-maintaining fiber configuration consists of passively mode-locked figure-9 Er-doped fiber oscillator, two-stage fiber amplifiers and a nonlinear fiber, delivering femtosecond Raman solitons in a tunable range of 1580 to 2016 nm. The tunable Raman solitons are further injected into a specifically-designed chirped periodically-poled lithium niobite (CPPLN) crystal for efficient SHG, and therefore femtosecond pulses with wide wavelength tuning from 790 to 1000 nm are obtained. The shortest pulse duration is < 100 fs at 890 nm, and the average power is 7.55 mW with a repetition rate of 44.9 MHz. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of a < 1000 nm broadband tunable fiber-based femtosecond source almost covering the whole short-wavelength near-infrared spectrum, which may have important applications in the nonlinear microscopy, biomedical imaging, and material processing.

Abstract:The Yb:fiber based high-power and high-energy ultrafast lasers usually feature central wavelength of 1030 nm instead of the more common one of 1064 nm, thus limiting some potential wavelength-dependent applications. In this work, a hectowatt 1064-nm femtosecond chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system based on double-stage rod-type photonic crystal fiber (PCF) amplifier was demonstrated, with a pulse energy of 212-μJ and a repetition rate of 0.5 MHz. Compared with our previous work [Opt. Express 30(6), 3611, 2022], two key measures were employed. Firstly, a Yb:YAG crystal was intentionally introduced as a spectral filter for avoiding 1030-nm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) oscillation, which hence improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 15 dB. Secondly, an additional stage of rod-type PCF amplifier was adopted for further power scaling, achieving an average power of 127 W. Finally, the pulse was compressed to ∼460 fs, with an average power of 106 W and a compression efficiency of ∼83%. The beam quality factors (M2) were measured to be M2 X = 1.12 and M2 Y = 1.09. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy among 1064-nm hectowatt-level femtosecond lasers, thus providing a high-quality source for wavelength-dependent applications. For example, it can be used as a driver for high-repetition-rate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) sources about 10.5 eV, with an expected conversion efficiency of up to 1%.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an ultrashort, compact green light radiation by frequency doubling of an all-fiber ytterbium-doped fiber laser source in a PPKTP waveguide fabricated by femtosecond laser pulses. Using the fabricated PPKTP waveguide crystal containing a 10 mm single grating with a period of 9.0 μm, we generate 310 mW of picosecond radiation at 532 nm for a fundamental power of 1.6W, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 19.3%. The temperature tuning range of 8°C is achieved for a fixed fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm, the FWHM of the wavelength tuning curve is 4.2 nm at room temperature. The generated ultrashort pulses at 532 nm are of great importance and have comprehensive applications in photobiology research and high-resolution spectroscopy.

Abstract:We have for the first time experimentally demonstrated a high repetition-rate picosecond fiber laser source at 2 mu m by a spectrally masked phase modulation technique, where a phase modulator driven by a sinusoidal RF signal and a fiber Bragg grating are used to convert the output of a 2-mu m continuous-wave single-longitudinal-mode diode to a picosecond pulse train. The repetition-rate of this laser source can be continuously and flexibly tuned from 1 to 6 GHz by simply changing the RF signal. We achieved a shortest pulse width of similar to 60 ps and a high SNR of >75 dB at an operating frequency of 6 GHz. The simplicity and robustness of such a picosecond laser as well as the ability to synchronize with an external trigger make it a highly useful source for 2-mu m high speed optical data processing, communications, and metrology.

Abstract:We present a wavelength-tunable narrow-band fiber-coupled source to generate correlated photon pairs at 539 nm and 1550 nm. Using a 10-mm PPLN crystal, we obtain more than 50 mm tunable range near 1550 nm. This source, given its spectral property and tunable property, is well suited for tasks in fiber-optic quantum communication and cryptography networks.

Abstract:We demonstrated a straightforward approach to generate red and near-infrared laser emissions by a Raman-assisted four wave mixing (FWM) process in a nonlinear Yb-doped fiber amplifier, delivering 342 fs pulses of 241 nJ at 864 nm, 834 fs pulses of 21 nJ at 751 nm, and 1.9 ps pulses of 3.8 μJ at 1030 nm. A pair of gratings was employed as the pre-compressor to promote the intensity of the fundamental wave in the main amplifier. Multiple wavelengths from 751 to 1273 nm resulted due to cascaded-Raman-assisted FWM. The pre-compression also underlay the achievement of 25.1, 701, and 2000 kW peak power for the red (751 nm), near-infrared (864 nm), and fundamental (1030 nm) components respectively, which restrained the gain narrowing effect during the amplification. It finally led to shorter pulse duration under increased power.

Abstract:We present a fiber-format picosecond light source for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy. Pulses from a Yb-doped fiber amplifier are frequency converted by four-wave mixing (FWM) in normal-dispersion photonic crystal fiber to produce a synchronized two-color picosecond pulse train. We show that seeding the FWM process overcomes the deleterious effects of group-velocity mismatch and allows efficient conversion into narrow frequency bands. The source generates more than 160 mW of nearly transform-limited pulses tunable from 775 to 815 nm. High-quality coherent Raman images of animal tissues and cells acquired with this source are presented. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
