Abstract:Wide-angle and broadband antireflection (AR) coating is of the essence in modern optical systems in many fields, which has a great influence on the stray light and imaging quality. A simple and convenient manufacturing method is proposed to address this issue based on a composite coating combining the nano-tapered Al2O3•xH2O (AH) structure and high-low index thin film stack. The optical properties of nano-tapered AH structure at various thickness are first studied and modeled in optics by several homogeneous sub-layers with the graded equivalent index. The designed composite AR coatings are manufactured by vacuum deposition and wet etching subsequently in the hot deionized water. Compared to the common dielectric multilayer antireflection stack, the composite coating presents excellent AR performance. The measured average reflectance values of the double-side coated BK7 glass are as low as 0.40%, 0.41%, 0.56% and 3.13% in 400-1100nm band at angles of incidence (AOI) of 6°, 20°, 40°, and 60°, respectively, while the measured average transmittance at normal incidence increases up to 99.3%. Finally, the process reproductivity, environmental reliability test including long term storage, high temperature annealing and 85°C-85% relative humidity storage of the composite coatings are evaluated. The proposed AR scheme provides a low-cost, efficient, wide-angle and broadband AR coating for kinds of large-curvature components and complex surfaces in fields of consumer electronics, automotive, security, etc.

Abstract:Trimethylamine (TMA), TiCl4, and water are applied as the precursors to deposit Al2O3 and TiO2. With different substrate temperatures, the optical properties and surface morphologies of the two oxides TiO2 and SiO2 are studied, respectively. With substrate temperature of 120 oC, amorphous TiO2 can be obtained, and the surface roughness (RMS) is only 0.928 nm. Applying Al2O3 and TiO2 deposited in 120 oC as low and high refractive index materials, anti-reflection (AR) coating at single point (550 nm) is designed. Furthermore, with the calibrated growth rates, this AR coating is fabricated, and its ultimate reflectance for the AR coating at 550 nm is less than 0.2%, which can meet the requirement for most applications.

Abstract:We report a new structure for broadband antireflection coating by dip-coating technique, which has minimal cost and is compatible with large-scale manufacturing. The coatings are prepared by depositing SiO2 sol-gel film on a glass substrate, subsequently depositing SiO2 single-layer particle coating through electrostatic attraction, and depositing a final very thin SiO2 sol-gel film to improve the mechanical strength of the whole coating structure. The refractive index of the structure changes gradually from the top to the substrate. The transmittance of a glass substrate has been experimentally found to be improved in the spectral range of 400-1 400 nm and in the incidence angle range from 0 degrees to at least 45 degrees. The mechanical strength is immensely improved because of the additional thin SiO2 sol-gel layer. The surface texture can be applied to the substrates of different materials and shapes as an add-on coating.

Abstract:By demarcating the ranges of transition regions on different underlayers in atomic layer deposition (ALD), their effects on broad-band anti-refection (BBAR) coating (400–680nm) are evaluated. In ALD, comparatively larger transition region of TiO2 on bare BK7 glass severely limits the fabricated precision of BBAR coating with a thin first layer. Considering that the transition region on existent ALD material is much thinner than that on bare substrate, a thick Al2O3 film is inserted as a pre-deposited layer on the substrate to completely overlay the transition region on bare BK7.A good agreement between the designed and experimental curves is obtained, and its average reflectance is 0.535% (400–680nm) in practice.

Abstract:Abstract A novel boomerang-like alumina based antireflective coating with ultra-low reflectance has been produced for light incidence angles form 0 up to 45°. Boomerang-like alumina nanostructures have been fabricated on the BK7 glass substrates by dip-coating and surface modification via hot water treatment. To achieve the lowest residual reflectance, the effect of dip-coating rate and hot-water temperature in the treatment process has been investigated and optimized. To further investigate the boomerang-like alumina nanostructure and extract its graded refractive index profile by fitting the measured reflectance spectrum with the simulated one, a simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been performed. The average reflectance measured at normal incidence for double-sided coated BK7 glass substrates is only 0.3% in the visible spectral region. Considering both sides, the average reflectance of the substrate decreased in the spectral range of 400–700 nm down to 0.4% at incidence angles of 45° by applying the boomerang-like alumina antireflection coatings. The optimized single layer boomerang-like alumina coating on the curved aspheric lens exhibited a low average reflectance of less than 0.14% and an average transmittance of above 99.3% at normal incidence. The presented process is a simple and cost-effective route towards broadband and omnidirectional antireflection coatings, which have promising potential to be applied on substrates having large scales with complex geometric shapes.

Hard Antireflective Coatings in the Visible Band

Abstract:Antireflection coatings with sapphire-like hardness are highly desired in advanced engineering applications. Currently, classic (LH)^n structures based on Si3N4/SiO2 stacks are widely used to obtain high optical transparency and surface hardness in industry. However, it still suffers from low durability and multiple failures after wear and scratch tests. Herein, we selected Ta2O5/Si3N4 nanolaminates to fabricate toughened AR coatings with similar refractive indices, overcoming the brittleness of thick nitride films. Furthermore, we proposed another graded AR coating, using a"Step up-step down" method to combine the hardness gradient structure with optical design. The toughened AR coating exhibited a low reflectance of 0.8% (420-780 nm) and a remarkable hardness of 22.8 GPa, meanwhile demonstrating the ability to withstand abrasion from steel wool up to 3,000 times. The graded AR coating achieves high transparency (Tave>98.8%, 420-720 nm), high surface hardness (H>23 GPa), and low residual stress (~680 MPa). Notably, no additional damage was observed during 6 months after the scratch test, such as cracking, peeling, and delamination.

Abstract:Subwavelength nanostructures are considered as promising building blocks for antireflection and light trapping applications. In this study, we demonstrate excellent broadband antireflection effect from thin films of monolayer silica nanospheres with a diameter of 100 nm prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett method on glass substrates. With a single layer of compact silica nanosphere thin film coated on both sides of a glass, we achieved maximum transmittance of 99% at 560 nm. Furthermore, the optical transmission peak of the nanosphere thin films can be tuned over the UV-visible range by changing processing parameters during Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. The tunable optical transmission peaks of the Langmuir-Blodgett films were correlated with deposition parameters such as surface pressure, surfactant concentration, ageing of suspensions and annealing effect. Such peak-tunable broadband antireflection coating has wide applications in diversified industries such as solar cells, windows, displays and lenses.

Abstract:In the 3-5 & mu;m mid-wave infrared (MWIR) atmospheric transparency window region, infrared detectors are widely applied in spectral imaging, remote sensing and other fields, and their rapid development has put forward higher requirements for infrared optical windows. Common mid-wave infrared optical materials such as germanium and zinc sulfide have poor mechanical properties, causing them difficult to meet various harsh environments. In this paper, a 3-layer film stack is proposed to achieve high transmission and high hardness by radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering with the single aluminum target. Two types of AlN/ Al2O3/AlN stack with top AlN thicknesses of 50 and 100 nm are studied to realize the best optical and mechanical characteristics. The average transmission increases up to 94.0% for 3-5 & mu;m with the double-side AlN/Al2O3/AlN stacks on the silicon substrate, while the hardness is significantly improved to-16.6 GPa for both types. After annealing at 500 degrees C and 750 degrees C for 6 h in a vacuum environment, the spectra of the two film stacks move towards the shorter wavelength slightly, and the hardness of both are obviously enhanced. The highest hardness of the film system reaches-20.8 GPa, making it far more resistant to sand erosion than ordinary antireflection films. The result shows that this film stack can withstand high temperature and gravel impact tests, meeting the service requirements of the harsh environment of the MWIR optical system.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a broadband absorber with high efficiency by an atomic layer depositing nanometer iridium (Ir) film onto a porous anodic alumina (PAA) template. The average absorption is able to achieve as high as 93.4% from 400 to 1100 nm and the absorption efficiency can reach up to 96.8% for the improved structure of the quadrangular frustum pyramid array. Not only the hexagonal latticed structures of the PAA template but also many similar structures based on gratings or holes with the square latticed or other latticed mode can realize the broadband high absorption efficiency. The light absorbed within the Ir/Glass interface and the sidewalls of PAA by the light funneling effect both contribute to the broadband absorption with high efficiency. This absorber, described in this paper, can be manufactured with a low-cost and large-area manner and has potential applications in fields of light harvesting, imaging, etc.

Abstract:Light reflection from surfaces is ubiquitous in nature. Diverse optoelectronic devices need durable, omnidirectional, and transparent ultra-antireflective surfaces. Here, we engineered antireflective transparent surfaces composed of silica nanocaps through a simple thermal treatment of a silica-coated monolayer colloidal crystal template. The relationship between the structure and the antireflective performance of the silica nanocaps was systematically studied both experimentally and numerically. On the basis of the understanding of the structure-antireflection relationships, ultra-antireflection coatings with a transmittance of ∼98.75 ± 0.15% in the visible wavelength range were prepared by fabricating two differently sized silica nanocaps. More importantly, the antireflection of the coatings formed by two differently sized nanocaps demonstrated poor dependence on the angle of the incident light (i.e., omnidirectionality). The reflection is <2.5% even at an incident angle of 60°. The prepared ultra-antireflective silica nanocap coatings outperform state-of-the-art transparent antireflective coatings regarding the antireflection performance, the wavelength range, and the omnidirectionality. The silica nanoshells were welded together with the underlying fused silica. Therefore, they can sustain common mechanical friction and scratching, demonstrating extraordinary mechanical durability as verified by sand abrasion tests. Further, the silanized silica nanocaps turned out to be hydrophobic with an outstanding self-cleaning performance without prominently influencing the transmittance. The durable and omnidirectional ultra-antireflective transparent silica nanocaps will have promising applications in solar energy conversion and storage, displays, optical lenses, and a wide range of optoelectronic devices.
High performance hierarchical nanoporous antireflective films by a facile sol–gel process

Abstract:Single layer antireflection (SLAR) sol-gel films on super white glass substrates were prepared by hierarchically introducing hollow silica nano-spheres (HSNs) and F127 templated nano-pores. HSNs and F127 templated nano-pores were formed by base and acid catalyzed sol-gel processes, respectively. The dispersibility of HSNs was ameliorated by Ph-TES surface modifications. The porosity of the SLAR films was engineered by a step-by-step addition of nano-pores and HSNs so that the refractive index could be tuned to be as low as the desired value of 1.24. It accordingly improved the transmittance of the films with an optimized maximum transmittance of 98.21% in the visible spectral region. Furthermore, the concentration of modified HSNs was adjusted to modulate the peak transmittance wavelength from 550 nm to 680 nm. The nano-scale surface embossments due to the addition of HSNs was also contributory to the antireflective effect of the films, especially at 45 degrees or 5 degrees incident angle. As a result, the average transmittance of the double side coating super white glass was increased by 7.10% at 400-1000 nm with good wear resistance. The porosity directed mechanical durability varied from 6H to 3H (pencil hardness). It displays considerable AR application prospects for suitable optical and optoelectronic devices.
HfO2 Nanorod Array As High‐Performance and High‐Temperature Antireflective Coating

Abstract:Antireflective (AR) coating with both high antireflectance and omnidirectional characteristic is desired for many advanced optical device applications and photovoltaic thin‐film solar cells. The application of double‐layer antireflective (DLAR) coating to reduce reflectance is largely constrained at wide wavelength range due to refractive index variation within individual layer and between the air–substrate interfaces. In this article, high performance gradient refractive index double‐layer AR coatings with periodically patterned hierarchical porous hafnia nanorods that mimic moth compound eyes are fabricated on a dense hafnia matrix layer using glancing angle deposition technique. The refractive indices for the top and bottom layers of the DLAR hafnia coatings are 1.36 and 1.87. The fabricated films possess high transparency showing zero reflectance at calculated wavelength of 550 nm but also give <1% reflectance over broad range of visible spectrum at different angles of light incidence displaying its omnidirectional characteristic. The shifting and tuning of reflectance to nearly <1% in visible, infrared, and ultraviolet regions was achieved for wide range of substrate materials by tailoring refractive index through porosity and film thickness of the two layers. Moreover, the DLAR hafnia thin films show high thermal stability at high temperatures up to 300 °C.

Abstract:Nature instigates researchers significantly in imitating to engender comparable properties using artificial methods, which unlocks developing trend in material science and engineering progress. Fabricating graded-index nanostructures is an effective approach to tune and generate similar properties artificially such as the moth's eye antireflectance (AR) or lotus like superhydrophobicity. Herein, Bilayer AR coatings with periodically arranged SiO2 hierarchical nanostructures resembling moth eyes are fabricated on dense SiO2 matrix base layer using the versatile route of glancing angle deposition technique (GLAD). The refractive indices of monolayer SiO2 are tuned from 1.46 to 1.08 by changing the deposition angle () from 0 to 88 degrees. The fabricated bilayer SiO2 AR (BSAR) film possess high optical omnidirectional broadband transparency and tunability at a desired wavelength range showing <1% reflectance. The present AR design is flexible and practically applicable to various supporting substrate materials ( varies from 1.45 to 1.9). Furthermore, the omnidirectional BSAR films show multiple functions including enhanced mechanical strength, the thermal stability (up to 300 degrees C), and hydrophobic capability with a water contact angle (CA) of 147 degrees to withstand under humid environment. This multipurpose coating provides an intriguing route in optics field for imminent research.
Broadband antireflection film by glancing angle deposition

Abstract:A broadband antireflection film was prepared with SiO2 by glancing angle deposition. The refractive index of the SiO2 film was tuned from 1.15 to 1.45 by adjusting the deposition angle. A novel broadband antireflection film was designed with the graded index film. The average reflectivity of antireflection film is less than 0.41% between 400 nm and 1800 nm wavelength range at 0° incident angle.

Abstract:A double-layer broadband antireflective coating with remarkable optical performance and superhydrophilicity has been designed and prepared based on TiO 2 -SiO 2 hybrid films. The synthesis of TiO 2 -SiO 2 composite sols is carried out using titanium isopropoxide and tetraethyl orthosilicate as raw ingredients in an acid-catalyzed system. The TiO 2 -SiO 2 hybrid film with refractive index of 1.61 (at 550 nm) is used as the bottom layer, and the other mesoporous TiO 2 -SiO 2 film templated by an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide-ethylene oxide triblock copolymer is employed as the top layer to achieve the design concept of quarter-half structure. The average transmittance reaches 99.17% in the visible spectral range. The water contact angle of the coating is observed to reduce significantly from 47° to 9.75° by introducing ammonia treatment, indicating that the double-layer coating exhibits superhydrophilicity. Simultaneously, due to the doping of TiO 2 , the double-layer coating possesses a high abrasion resistance. The prepared double-layer antireflective coating has potential application in various areas, like solar cells, eyeglasses and windows of high-rise buildings, etc.

Abstract:Multilayer broadband antireflective (AR) coatings consisting of porous layers usually suffers poor functional durability. Based on a quarter-half-quarter multilayer structure, AR coatings with dense SiO2 film as the top layer are designed, and refractive index for each layer is optimized. After heat-treated at only 150 °C, refractive index of Nb2O5 film reaches to 2.072 (at 550 nm), which can meet design requirements of the middle layer. TiO2–SiO2 composites with controllable refractive indices are selected to be used as the bottom layer. The obtained triple-layer AR coating presents excellent performance, and the average transmittance at 400–800 nm attains 98.41%. Dense layers endow the multilayer structure good abrasion-resistance, and hexamethyldisilazane is further used to modify the surface of the AR coating, which can greatly improve the hydrophobicity of the coating. The proposed triple-layer broadband AR coating has potential value in practical applications of sol–gel deposition.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for broadband antireflection (AR) coatings has led to a growing interest in nanolaminates (NLs) with tunable properties. However, achieving excellent optical performance in NLs can be challenging due to multiple interfaces and a rather thin sublayer. In this study, we systematically investigated the factor that deteriorates the optical performance, focusing on the sublayer thickness deviation, sublayer n deviation, and interfacial diffusion, to correct the n -profiles of NLs. A pre-correction strategy for the AR coating design is proposed and experimentally demonstrated via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition. The excellent fit of the spectrum demonstrates that the proposed design strategy can benefit structure-sensitive NL-based coatings.
