Abstract:Traditional machining models based on stress–strain theory cannot reasonably explain the single-point machining results of face-centered cubic (FCC) crystals, especially at the nanoscale. Therefore, we discard the machining viewpoints of stress–strain and continuous medium and propose a theoretical model that unifies the microscale and nanoscale single-point machining mechanisms, based on the plastic deformation behavior of FCC crystals. To validate the model, a typical FCC crystal surface was subjected to microscale and nanoscale scratching experiments. The model could not only explain the transformation mechanism among the chip, burrs, and ploughing during the scratching process but could also quantitatively calculate the surface morphology distribution when turning the FCC crystalline end face. The experimental results indicate that regardless of the machining scale, the coupled effect of the workpiece surface crystal orientation and machining directions primarily determines the machining results. This model is the first to provide a new manufacturing perspective that can unify the FCC crystalline material removal mechanisms in microscale and nanoscale single-point machining.
