Abstract:MAX phase solid solutions have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique structure and properties. However, the synthesis of MAX phase solid solutions doped with multi-elements at M-sites still remains a challenge. Herein, a series of (V1-x-yTixCry)(2)AlC solid solution powders are prepared through the reactions of V, Ti, Cr, and Al metals and graphite in molten NaCl/KCl salts, and their electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties are systematically investigated. In comparison with Ti2AlC, V2AlC and Cr2AlC, (V1-x-yTixCry)(2)AlC solid solutions exhibit prominent EM absorption performance. Specifically, the minimum reflection loss (R-L) value of (V0.6Ti0.2Cr0.2)(2)AlC is -56.2 dB at 12.07 GHz with a sample thickness of 1.75 mm, and the optimized effective absorption bandwidth (E-AB, R-L < -10 dB) covers the whole X band with 4.16 GHz at 2.00 mm. Furthermore, the strong dielectric resonance is presented in the range of 7-13 GHz for all (V1-x-yTixCry)(2)AlC, indicating that both dipole polarization and conduction loss contribute to the excellent dielectric loss of doped MAX phases. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the polarization loss is attributed to the anisotropic conductivity of MAX phases and M-site doping, which further weakens the electric conductivity. As a result, plenty of dipoles are involved and polarization relaxation occurred when the (V1-x-yTixCry)(2)AlC solutions are radiated by EM. Considering the numerous kinds of MAX phase solid solutions, this work paves the way to study the EM absorption performance of high-entropy or other MAX phase solid solutions.
Insights into the Mechanical Properties and Thermal Transport of Ti3(Al1-xAx)C2 Solid Solutions: A Comprehensive Theoretical Study Combined with Experiment

Abstract:The solid solution is a widely used and effective approach at a low cost to achieve desirable properties. Here, we performed theoretical investigation on a series of binary-A solid solution MAX (SS-MAX) phases, i.e., Ti3(Al1-xAx) C2 SS (A = Ga, In, Tl, Si, P, and S; x = 0-1 in 0.25 increments). Under the insight of the mixing enthalpy Delta H mix Gibbs free energy Delta G mix , and formation enthalpy H cp , S-alloyed MAX phases were evaluated to be unstable and are further corroborated by experiments. Interestingly, the bulk modulus of Ti3(Al0.75AGa0.25)C2 (Ti3(A- l 0.75 In 0.25 )C 2 ) unusually showed an approximate 12.8 % (11.1 %) enhancement than that of Ti3AlC2 and 11.0 (17.1 %) enhancement than that of Ti3GaC2 (Ti3InC2). Moreover, the elastic moduli were exclusively enhanced by A elements capable of reducing triangular prism distortions. The anisotropic behavior was also revealed and interpreted as that the group IIIA elements (Ga, In, Tl) showed a pronouncedly strengthened effect on the intralayer bonding states, while Si and P acted on the interlayer interaction. Ti3(Al1-xSix)C2 presented strong resistance to phonon scattering, resulting in their similar lattice thermal conductivities. The phenomena and the underlying physics driven by the MX-A interlayer interaction will not only provide insights into manipulation multi-site/lattice materials but also pave the way for accelerating the developments and applications of high entropy MAX phases.
Synthesis and electromagnetic wave absorption performances of a novel (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 high-entropy MAX phase

Abstract:Herein, a novel kind of high-entropy MAX phases, (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders were successfully synthesized by a newly proposed two-step solid state reaction process. The oxidation experiments demonstrate that the oxidation products of Al2Mo3O12 and rutile TiO2 are formed at about 600 and 800 °C, respectively. Besides, the dielectric and electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties of (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders and those after oxidation at different temperatures were also examined. The results show that the as-synthesized (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders possess excellent EM wave absorption performances with the minimum reflection loss (RL) of -45.80 dB (at 1.7 mm thickness) and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.6 GHz (at 1.5 mm thickness). After oxidation at 400–800 °C, due to the coupling of conductivity loss and polarization loss, (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders can retain good EM wave absorption properties in a certain frequency range. In this paper, the effects of oxidation on EM wave absorption properties of high-entropy MAX phases were systematically investigated for the first time. This work manifests that high-entropy MAX phases are promising EM wave absorbing candidates and can maintain good EM wave absorption performances after oxidation.

Abstract:Since the synthesis of non-oxidized ceramic and alloy powders requires both high temperature and oxygen insulation conditions, here we demonstrate a cost-efficient molten salt sealing/shielded synthesis method with dynamic gas tightness. Compared to conventional synthesis method, it can prevent the loss of reaction materials at high temperature, cut off the connection between reacting material and outside air, and does not require longtime ball milling mixing treatment or provision of applied pressing before or during heating. Only low-cost salts (e.g., NaCl, KCl), a few minutes of raw material mixing, and regular heating molds are required to obtain highpurity (>96 wt%), micron-sized Ti3AlC2 and Ti3SiC2 powders with narrow size distribution, which significantly decreased the complexity and production costs in the synthesis process. The effect of temperature and raw material content on the products were investigated. The mechanism of diffusion reaction between reactants in molten salt environment was analyzed. The new method developed here was also applicable to Ti2AlC, V2AlC and Cr2AlC MAX phases, as well as provided new ideas for the preparation of other MXenes precursors with certain stoichiometric ratios, air-sensitive materials and nanopowders.

Abstract:Presently, there is a growing interest in exploring materials for absorbing electromagnetic waves (EMW). MAX materials stand out as potential absorbers. However, limited attention has been given to understanding the impact of doping on their intrinsic properties. This study innovatively introduces magnetic metallic elements (Fe, Ni) and transition metallic elements (Mo, Zr, W, Ta) simultaneously into the M site of Ti3AlC2, forming novel ternary MAX phase ceramics. Phase and microstructural analyses indicate the successful preparation of a single solid solution with uniformly distributed elements. Notably, Ti2.7Fe0.1Mo0.2AlC2 exhibits the lowest reflection loss at − 33.9 dB. Ti2.7Ni0.1Ta0.2AlC2 demonstrates the widest absorption bandwidth of 5.10 GHz. Importantly, the matching thicknesses for Ti2.7Fe0.1Mo0.2AlC2 and Ti2.7Ni0.1Ta0.2AlC2 are 2.5 mm and 1.97 mm, respectively. This indicates that the material achieves excellent microwave absorption performance while maintaining a lightweight and thin structure, making it suitable for various specific requirements. We systematically investigated the influence of different doping elements on the microwave absorption properties of Ti3AlC2, with a particular emphasis on the simultaneous introduction of magnetic metallic and transition metallic elements. This dual incorporation has significantly enhanced both dielectric and magnetic losses, offering crucial insights for the design of future innovative microwave absorption materials.

Abstract:High-entropy (HE) materials have gained attention for their ability to enhance the physical properties of constituent elements, yet their commercialization is hindered by high synthesis temperatures and complex synthesis processes. In this study, TiV1/3Cr1/3Nb1/3AlC powders were prepared through molten salt shielded synthesis (MS3), with synthesis temperature being 200–300 °C lower than similar materials. The synthesis mechanism is described through density functional and transition state theories (DFT and TST), and the influence of process parameters on phase composition and element distribution is discussed. Structural, thermodynamic, and physical properties are predicted, including Young's modulus, hardness, and Poisson's ratio. Using a finite element method (FEM), a coupling model involving heat transfer, chemical reaction, and porous media flow is constructed. Dissolution of raw material powders and solute diffusion of relevant elements in molten salt provide an explanation for how holding time and salt content regulate the distribution of elements within the product.

Abstract:Rational constructing multi-phase interfaces and hetero-substituted sites structures holds extraordinary potential for harnessing tailorable electromagnetic (EM) responses and fascinating EM wave absorption. Herein, a series of new bimetallic MAX phase hybrid composites (Ti1-xVx)2AlCf with diverse dielectric behaviors integration are synthesized via a simple thermally driven gradient sintering strategy, using carbon fiber as the initial carbon source. Their chemical compositions, physical structures and EM properties are studied in detail, focusing on the resultant temperature and M-site vanadium atom substitutional engineering. Specifically, benefiting from the co-boosted interfacial/dipole polarization capabilities caused by the simultaneous manipulation of heterogeneous boundary states and intrinsic dipoles distribution at 1350 degrees C, the TiVAlCf composite exhibits an ultrahigh minimum reflection loss of-59.13 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.93 GHz, with a matching thickness of only 1.53 mm. Furthermore, multilayer gradient metamaterial model and a high-temperature tail nozzle model are constructed to further highlight the advanced EM functional application capacity of these MAX-based materials. This work is expected to provide an innovative platform for understanding cooperative multi-dielectric coupling mechanisms in the controllable design of high-efficient hybrid composite absorbers.
Structural Engineering Enabled Bimetallic (Ti1-yNby)2AlC Solid Solution Structure for Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in Gigahertz

Abstract:Microstructures play a critical role to influence the polarization behavior of dielectric materials, which determines the electromagnetic response ability in gigahertz. However, the relationship between them, especially in the solid-solution structures is still absent. Herein, a series of (Ti1-yNby)(2)AlC MAX phase solid solutions with nano-laminated structures have been employed to illuminate the aforementioned problem. The relationship has been investigated by the lattice distortion constructed via tuning the composition from Ti to Nb in the M-site atomic layer. Experimental characterizations indicated that the dielectric response behaviors between declined conduction loss and boosted polarization loss can be well balanced by niobium atom manipulative solid-solution engineering, which is conducive to impedance matching and electromagnetic absorption performance. Theoretical calculation further proved that the origin of electric dipoles is ascribed to the charge density differences resulting from the altered microscopic atomic distribution. As a result, the Ti1.2Nb0.8AlC exhibits the mostly optimized microwave absorption property, in which a minimum reflection loss of -42 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.3 GHz under an ultra-thin thickness of 1.4 mm can be obtained. This work provides insight into the structural engineering in modifying electromagnetic response performance at gigahertz and which can be expanded to other solid-solution materials.

Abstract:Many methods have been used to synthesize the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase, but obtaining high-purity (>99.0 %) Ti3AlC2 is still a challenge. In this work, nano/submicro-sized Ti3AlC2 powder was prepared using Ti/Al/C elemental powders by the molten salt method in a vacuum quartz tube system. The effects of reaction temperature and dwell time, mechanical activation, the ratio of flux to reactants, and the ratio of Al on the synthesis of Ti3AlC2 were systematically investigated. The results show that Ti3AlC2 powder with a high purity of up to 99.0 % was prepared using ball milled 3Ti/1.1Al/2C mixture as the reaction material, and NaCl-KCl as the molten salt at 1150 °C for 2 h. The reaction mechanisms of Ti3AlC2 in molten salt have been discussed.

Abstract:The effects of M atomic species mixing on the physical properties of newly synthesized MAX phase (Zr1-xTix)2AlC solid solutions have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The lattice constants in good accord with the experimental results, are found to decrease with Ti content. The elastic constants, Cij, and the other polycrystalline elastic moduli have been calculated. The elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions of these solid solutions. The constants C11, C33 and C44 are found to increase with Ti contents up to x = 0.67, thereafter these decrease slightly. A reverse trend is followed by C12 and C13. The elastic moduli are also found to increase up to x = 0.67, beyond which these moduli go down slightly. Pughs ratio and Poissons ratio both confirm the brittleness of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC. Different anisotropy factors revealed the anisotropic character of these solid solutions. A non-vanishing value of the electronic energy density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi level suggests that (Zr1-xTix)2AlC are metallic in nature. A mixture of covalent, ionic and metallic bonding has been indicated from the electronic structure with dominant covalent bonding due to hybridization of Zr-4d states and C-2p states. The variation of elastic stiffness and elastic parameters with x is seen to be correlated with partial DOS (PDOS) and charge density distribution. The calculated Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity are found to increase with Ti contents, while melting temperature is the highest for x = 0.67. The solid solution with x = 0.67 shows improved mechanical and thermal properties compared to that of the two end members Zr2AlC and Ti2AlC. The study of charge transport properties of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC reveals the metallic nature with saturated resistivity. The maximum power factor is obtained at 400 K for (Zr1-xTix)2AlC.

Abstract:The phase structures and hydrogen storage properties of TiV1.35Cr1.35-xMnx alloys (x = 0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45) have been investigated. The XRD analysis shows that all alloys have a single solid solution phase with a b.c.c. structure and the lattice constant reduces with the increase of manganese content. It was found that the activation behavior of the alloy debases, due to the partial substitution of Cr with Mn, and the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity at 25 °C decreases slightly too. But the addition of Mn decreases the hysteresis of P-C isotherm and the slope of the hydrogen desorption plateau, thereby the effective hydrogen desorption capacity at 100°C and hydrogen desorption/absorption ratio increase and reach the maximum value at x=0.35.

Abstract:The MAX phases are a family of of ternary layered material with both metal and ceramic properties, and it is also precursor ma-terials for synthesis of two-dimensional MXenes. The theory predicted that there are more than 600 stable ternary layered MAX phases. At present, there are more than 80 kinds of ternary MAX phases synthesized through experiments, and few reports on MAX phases where M is a rare earth element. In this study, a new MAX phase Sc2SnC with rare earth element Sc at the M sites was synthesized through the reaction sintering of Sc, Sn, and C mixtures. Phase composition and microstructure of Sc2SnC were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectrum analysis. And structural stability, mechanical and electronic properties of Sc2SnC was investigated via density functional theory. This study open a door for ex-plore more unknown ternary layered rare earth compounds Ren+1SnCn (Re=Sc, Y, La-Nd, n=1) and corresponding rare earth MXenes.
On the stochastic phase stability of Ti2AlC-Cr2AlC

Abstract:The quest towards expansion of the MAX design space has been accelerated with the recent discovery of several solid solution and ordered phases involving at least two MAX end members. Going beyond the nominal MAX compounds enables not only fine tuning of existing properties but also entirely new functionality. This search, however, has been mostly done through painstaking experiments as knowledge of the phase stability of the relevant systems is rather scarce. In this work, we report the first attempt to evaluate the finite-temperature pseudo-binary phase diagram of the Ti2AlC-Cr2AlC via first-principles-guided Bayesian CALPHAD framework that accounts for uncertainties not only in ab initio calculations and thermodynamic models but also in synthesis conditions in reported experiments. The phase stability analyses are shown to have good agreement with previous experiments. The work points towards a promising way of investigating phase stability in other MAX Phase systems providing the knowledge necessary to elucidate possible synthesis routes for MAX systems with unprecedented properties.

Abstract:As one of Mn+1AXn (MAX) family, where M is an early transition metal, A is an A-group element, and X is either C or N and n = 1, 2, and 3, Ti2AlC is a promising candidate material for nuclear energy industry due to its unique features such as elastically stiff, good electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to high temperature oxidation and corrosion. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of Ti2AlC compound are expected to be improved. For the first time, the effect of V content on the structural, elastic, electronic and thermodynamic properties of the (Ti1-xVx)2AlC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) solid solutions was examined systematically and their compression behavior under 50 GPa was studied using density functional theory (DFT). The optimized lattice constants agree well with the experimental values and decrease with the increase of V content. The (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions are compressible along both a and c directions in the pressure range of 0–50 GPa. Calculated elastic constants verified mechanical stability under 50 GPa. The constant C 44 , directly related to the valence electron concentration, is found to increase with increasing V content. The bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Vickers hardness are found to reach a significant maximum value respectively when V content is 75%, and the reason is studied. The shear anisotropy factors show that (Ti1-xVx)2AlC compounds containing Ti and V are more anisotropic than Ti2AlC, and they have a tendency towards improved ductility. The metallic behaviors of (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions are confirmed by analyzing the electronic band structures and density of states. The thermal properties imply that the (Ti0.25V0.75)2AlC is expected to be more thermally conductive due to its highest Debye temperature of 771K of the five compounds. In addition, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Debye temperature increase with the increase of pressure under 50 GPa. The results reveal that the mechanical properties of Ti2AlC are improved much better than the thermal properties by the inclusion of V. Especially, the (Ti0.25V0.75)2AlC MAX phase in (Ti1-xVx)2AlC solid solutions is probably the most suitable candidate material for mechanical and thermal applications at high temperature.

Abstract:TiCxO1-x solid solutions were synthesized by sintering a mixture of titanium carbide and titanium monoxide at 1600 degrees C. The corresponding structures and morphologies of the TiCxO1-x solid solutions were characterized by XRD and SEM. A series of tests has been performed on the electrochemical dissolution behavior of TiCxO1-x solid solutions in NaCl-KCl molten salt. The influences of synthesis time and electrokinetic parameters on the anodic dissolution behavior were also investigated. The results showed that TiCxO1-x solid solutions can dissolve as Tin+ into alkali chloride melt. Titanium ion species dissolved from TiCxO1-x solid solutions changes between Ti2+ and Ti3+ depending on the applied potential. The tail gas on the anode was monitored by a mass spectrometer. It was found the synthesis time significantly affects the components of the anodic gas.

Abstract:This study employs the molten-salt-shielded method to dope the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase with Nb and Mo, aiming to expand the intrinsic potential of the material. X-ray diffraction confirms the preservation of the hexagonal lattice structure of Ti3AlC2, while Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses reveal the successful incorporation of dopants with subtle yet significant alterations in the vibrational modes and chemical environment. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterizations illustrate the characteristic layered morphology and uniform dopant distribution. Density functional theory simulations provide insights into the modified electronic structure, displaying changes in carrier transport mechanisms and potential increases in metallic conductivity, particularly when doping occurs at both the M and A sites. The computational findings are corroborated by the experimental results, suggesting that the enhanced material may possess improved properties for electronic applications. This comprehensive approach not only expands the MAX phase family but also tailors its functionality, which could allow for the production of hybrid materials with novel functionalities not present in the pristine form.

Abstract:The new types of multi-component Li3+xMg2-2xNb1-xTi2xO6 (0≤x≤1) solid-solution ceramics were designed based on the Li2TiO3-Li3NbO4-MgO pseudo ternary phase diagram and studied for millimeter-wave applications. The ceramics showed a full range of solid solubility between the Li3Mg2NbO6 and Li2TiO3 endmembers. As the doping content (x) increased, we detected the phase transitions among the orthorhombic, cubic, and monoclinic phase driven by the compositional changes, as well as accompanied with an order-disorder-order transformation. Besides, the smooth orthorhombic-cubic phase transition interfaces were observed in the electron diffraction images for the sample with the low dopant concentration (x=0.2), and the reconstructed superlattices based on the orthorhombic or the cubic structure were both observed nearby the orthorhombic-cubic phase transition interface. The change of Q×f values showed a considerable increase with the emergence of the superlattices, and the enhancement of the Q×f values was related to the very small lattice vibrational anharmonicity in the structures that contain the reconstructed superlattices. Typically, when sintered at 1250 ℃ for 4 h, the ultra-low dielectric loss was achieved in the x=0.2 sample with the properties of er=16.1, Q×f=128,600 GHz (f=9.2 GHz) and τf=-30.4 ppm/℃, and the temperature stable properties were obtained in the x=0.9 sample with er=20.4, Q×f=90,300 GHz (f=7.9 GHz), and τf=2.9 ppm/℃.

Abstract:MAX phases and its derived two-dimensional MXenes have attracted considerable interest because of their rich structural chemistry and multifunctional applications. Lewis acid molten salt route provides an opportunity for structure design and performance manipulation of new MAX phases and MXenes, Although a series of new MAX phases and MXenes were successfully prepared via Lewis acid melt route in recent years, few work is explored on nitride MAX phases and MXenes. Herein, a new copper-based 413-type Ti4CuN3 MAX phase was synthesized through isomorphous replacement reaction using Ti4AlN3 MAX phase precursor in molten CuCl2. In addition, it was found that at high temperature Ti4N3Cl x MXene will transform into two-dimensional cubic TiN α nanosheets with improved structural stability.
