Abstract:The MAX phases are a family of of ternary layered material with both metal and ceramic properties, and it is also precursor ma-terials for synthesis of two-dimensional MXenes. The theory predicted that there are more than 600 stable ternary layered MAX phases. At present, there are more than 80 kinds of ternary MAX phases synthesized through experiments, and few reports on MAX phases where M is a rare earth element. In this study, a new MAX phase Sc2SnC with rare earth element Sc at the M sites was synthesized through the reaction sintering of Sc, Sn, and C mixtures. Phase composition and microstructure of Sc2SnC were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectrum analysis. And structural stability, mechanical and electronic properties of Sc2SnC was investigated via density functional theory. This study open a door for ex-plore more unknown ternary layered rare earth compounds Ren+1SnCn (Re=Sc, Y, La-Nd, n=1) and corresponding rare earth MXenes.

Abstract:Since the synthesis of non-oxidized ceramic and alloy powders requires both high temperature and oxygen insulation conditions, here we demonstrate a cost-efficient molten salt sealing/shielded synthesis method with dynamic gas tightness. Compared to conventional synthesis method, it can prevent the loss of reaction materials at high temperature, cut off the connection between reacting material and outside air, and does not require longtime ball milling mixing treatment or provision of applied pressing before or during heating. Only low-cost salts (e.g., NaCl, KCl), a few minutes of raw material mixing, and regular heating molds are required to obtain highpurity (>96 wt%), micron-sized Ti3AlC2 and Ti3SiC2 powders with narrow size distribution, which significantly decreased the complexity and production costs in the synthesis process. The effect of temperature and raw material content on the products were investigated. The mechanism of diffusion reaction between reactants in molten salt environment was analyzed. The new method developed here was also applicable to Ti2AlC, V2AlC and Cr2AlC MAX phases, as well as provided new ideas for the preparation of other MXenes precursors with certain stoichiometric ratios, air-sensitive materials and nanopowders.
Synthesis and electromagnetic wave absorption performances of a novel (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 high-entropy MAX phase

Abstract:Herein, a novel kind of high-entropy MAX phases, (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders were successfully synthesized by a newly proposed two-step solid state reaction process. The oxidation experiments demonstrate that the oxidation products of Al2Mo3O12 and rutile TiO2 are formed at about 600 and 800 °C, respectively. Besides, the dielectric and electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties of (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders and those after oxidation at different temperatures were also examined. The results show that the as-synthesized (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders possess excellent EM wave absorption performances with the minimum reflection loss (RL) of -45.80 dB (at 1.7 mm thickness) and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.6 GHz (at 1.5 mm thickness). After oxidation at 400–800 °C, due to the coupling of conductivity loss and polarization loss, (Mo0.25Cr0.25Ti0.25V0.25)3AlC2 powders can retain good EM wave absorption properties in a certain frequency range. In this paper, the effects of oxidation on EM wave absorption properties of high-entropy MAX phases were systematically investigated for the first time. This work manifests that high-entropy MAX phases are promising EM wave absorbing candidates and can maintain good EM wave absorption performances after oxidation.

Abstract:In this work, an effective entropy‐driven approach is proposed to modulate the morphology of MAX phases. Benefiting from the merits of increasing entropy, the sheet stacking structure of (V0.25Ti0.25Cr0.25Mo0.25)2GaC, which enriched defects, improved polarization, and enhanced anisotropy, is likely advantageous for improving the electromagnetic wave absorption performance. Morphology regulation and composition design have proved to be effective strategies for the fabrication of desirable microwave absorbers. However, it is still challenging to precisely control the microstructure and components of MAX phases. Herein, an entropy‐driven approach, a transition from irregular grains (low entropy) to sheet structure (high entropy), is proposed to modulate the morphology of MAX phases. The theoretical calculation indicates that the morphology evolution can be ascribed to the enlarged energy difference between (11_00) and (0001) facets. The enriched structural defects and optimized morphologies yield significant dipolar polarization, interfacial polarization, multiple reflections, and scattering, which all enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of (V0.25Ti0.25Cr0.25Mo0.25)2GaC. Specifically, its minimum reflection loss can reach up to −47.12 dB at 12.13 GHz, and the optimal effective absorption bandwidth is 4.56 GHz (2.03 mm). Meanwhile, (V0.25Ti0.25Cr0.25Mo0.25)2GaC shows also pronounced thermal insulation properties affording it good reliability in the harsh working environment. This work offers a novel approach to designing and regulating the morphology of the high entropy MAX phase, and also presents an opportunity to elucidate the relationship between entropy and electromagnetic wave absorption performance.

Cloning, Pharmacological Characterization and Brain Distribution of the Rat Apelin Receptor

Abstract:The peptide apelin, recently isolated from bovine stomach tissue extracts, has been identified as an endogenous ligand of the human putative receptor protein related to the angiotensin receptor AT1 (APJ). In this article, we report cloning of the rat apelin receptor cDNA. The sequence shares 90% identity with the human APJ receptor and 31% with the rat AT1A angiotensin receptor. Subsequently a stable CHO cell line expressing the receptor fused at its C-terminal part with the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was established, allowing to verify its cell surface distribution and to determine the affinity of various apelin and angiotensin fragments on the cloned receptor. As shown for the human APJ receptor, the rat apelin receptor expressed in the cell line was negatively coupled to adenylate cyclase. The apelin fragment K17F (Lys1-Phe-Arg-Arg-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg-Leu-Ser-His-Lys-Gly-Pro-Met-Pro-Phe17) inhibited forskolin-stimulated cAMP production at sub-nanomolar concentrations whereas angiotensin II and angiotensin III were inactive. N-terminal elongation of K17F with a tyrosine or the N-terminal deletion of the first four amino acids did not modify the inhibitory action of K17F on cAMP production. In contrast, deletion of the first seven amino acids of K17F or substitution of phenylalanine by an alanine residue at the C-terminus completely abolished the activity of the peptide. In situ hybridization analysis of apelin receptor mRNA expression in the adult rat brain showed intense labeling in the hypothalamus, especially in the supraoptic and the paraventricular nuclei. The anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary were also highly labeled, as well as the pineal gland. Labeling was also found in extrahypothalamic structures such as the piriform cortex, the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, the central grey matter, the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, the dorsal raphe nucleus, the entorhinal cortex, the dentate gyrus and the Ammon’s horn. The hypothalamic and hypophyseal distribution of the receptor suggests an involvement of apelin in the control of neuro- and adenohypophyseal hormone release, whereas its presence in the pineal gland and in discrete higher brain structures points out to possible roles in the regulation of circadian rhythms and of water and food intake behavior.

Abstract:In this work, a series of new solid-solution i-MAX phase (W1/3Mo1/3 R 1/3)2AlC (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Y) were synthesized and characterized. From R = Gd to Er, the lanthanide contract is observed while the magnetic behaviors are varied from nonlinear antiferromagnetism-like type for R = Gd to weak ferromagnetism-like one for R = Er with gradually weakened magnetic coupling and reduced Curie-Weiss temperature. The solid-solution i-MXene W2/3Mo2/3(R)CTx was synthesized by selective etching Al and R elements and the highest specific capacitance of 120 Fg−1 at 1 Ag−1 was obtained. By further HM (Hydrazine Monohydrate, N2H4•H2O) treatment and hydrothermal composite with rGO, the specific capacitance is further elevated to 249 Fg−1. This is explained by the increament of O-/N-containing terminals and improved conductivity due to the formation of multidimensional interactive microstructure.

Abstract:As the next generation of commercial automotive power batteries begins replacing liquid lithium batteries, many look towards all-solid-state batteries to pioneer the future. All-solid-state batteries have attracted the attention of countless researchers around the world because of their high safety and high energy density. In recent times, halide solid-state electrolytes have become a research hotspot within solid-state electrolytes because of their potentially superior properties. In this paper, in the framework of DFT, we investigated the atomic mechanisms of improving the ionic conductivity and stability of Li3YbCl6. Our calculations show that both trigonal and orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 exhibit wide electrochemical windows and metastable properties (100 meV/atom > Ehull > 0 meV/atom). However, the orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 can be stabilized at high temperatures by taking the vibrational entropy into account, which is supported by the experimental results. Moreover, it is expected that because of the Yb/Li synergistic interactions that, due to their strong mutual coulomb repulsion, influence the Li+ transport behavior, the orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 might have superior ionic conductivities with appropriate Li+ migration paths determined by the Yb3+ distribution. Also, higher ionic conductivities can be obtained by regulating the random distribution of Li+ ions. Further Li+-deficiency can also largely increase the ionic conductivity by invoking vacancies. This study helps gain a deeper understanding of the laws that govern ionic conductivities and stabilities and provides a certain theoretical reference for the experimental development and design of halide solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Lewis acidic molten salt method is a promising synthesis strategy for achieving MXenes with controllable surface termination from numerous MAX materials. Understanding the phase evolution chemistry during etching and post processing is highly desirable but remains a key challenge due to the lack of suitable in-situ characterizations and the complexity of the reaction process. Herein, we introduce an operando synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SRXRD) technique to unveil the phase evolution process of Nb2GaC MAX under a molten-salt ambient, proposing a controllable synthesis to achieve optimal etching through precise temperature and time adjustment. Subsequently, the phase structure of Nb2CTx MXenes is successfully tailored from hexagonal to amorphous by time-dependent persulfate oxidation. The resulting amorphous Nb2CTx with a well-patterned morphology and numerous chloride terminations exhibits highly improved specific capacity, rate capability, and long cycling for Li+ storage with a Cl-containing surface protective film. Addressing the time-related phase evolution during the entire molten salt strategy provides new insights into achieving higher efficiency and controllability in preparing MXenes and shows great potential in high-performance energy storage systems based on MXenes.

Abstract:Solid solution modulation is an ideal method for combining the advantages of different parent compounds while mitigating their disadvantages. Here, we investigated the thermal sensitivity, magnetic properties, and microwave absorption of MgxMn1−xAl2xFe2(1−x)O4 (0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) spinel solid solution ceramics for application in multifunctional devices. The electrical transport and magnetic properties can be modulated by adjusting the solution ratio. The ceramics exhibit negative temperature coefficient characteristic. The B‐values from 5065–8056 K, suggesting accurate temperature measurements over a wide temperature range. As a type of soft magnetic material, it has a narrow hysteresis loop and high resistivity. Vector network analyzer studies indicate Mg0.2Mn0.8Al0.4Fe1.6O4 could be a candidate for microwave absorption in S‐band. This study successfully extends the applicability of MgxMn1−xAl2xFe2(1−x)O4 ceramics for high‐temperature thermistors and also confirms potential for multifunctional device.

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials face severe challenges in achieving effective absorption in low frequency bands. This work successfully synthesized a new type of high entropy MAX phase (HE MAX) absorption material using a low-temperature one-step solid-state reaction method. By adding magnetic elements and controlling the grain microstructure, the sample has strong EMW absorption ability in low-frequency bands. By changing the elements used as solvent pool in the raw materials, the electromagnetic loss synergy and impedance matching enhancement of the materials were achieved, and the absorption frequency band broke through to the low-frequency bands. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the sample using Al as the solvent pool (HE-MAX Al) reaches − 37.4 dB (3.0 mm) in the C-band. The HE-MAX series ceramics prepared are a new type of low-frequency band strong EMW absorbing material, which is expected to be applied in extreme working environments such as strong irradiation, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Abstract MAX phases are gaining attention as precursors of two-dimensional MXenes that are intensively pursued in applications for electrochemical energy storage. Here, we report the preparation of V 2 SnC MAX phase by the molten salt method. V 2 SnC is investigated as a lithium storage anode, showing a high gravimetric capacity of 490 mAh g −1 and volumetric capacity of 570 mAh cm −3 as well as superior rate performance of 95 mAh g −1 (110 mAh cm −3 ) at 50 C, surpassing the ever-reported performance of MAX phase anodes. Supported by operando X-ray diffraction and density functional theory, a charge storage mechanism with dual redox reaction is proposed with a Sn–Li (de)alloying reaction that occurs at the edge sites of V 2 SnC particles where Sn atoms are exposed to the electrolyte followed by a redox reaction that occurs at V 2 C layers with Li. This study offers promise of using MAX phases with M-site and A-site elements that are redox active as high-rate lithium storage materials.

Abstract:Recently, a family of halogen-based Li-rich antiperovskites were synthesized [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 134, 15042 (2012)], and the measured superionic conductivity makes these materials promising candidates as solid electrolytes for applications in Li-ion and Li-air batteries. This discovery raises several pressing issues on the fundamental physics concerning the thermodynamic and electrochemical stability of the synthesized materials and the mechanism of the observed superionic Li+ transport. Here, we study the reported antiperovskites Li3OCl, Li3OBr, and their mixed compounds using first-principles density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. Our calculations show that these materials are thermodynamically metastable. Their large electronic band gaps and chemical stability against electrodes suggest the excellent electrochemical performance, which bodes well for the use in potentially harsh working conditions in practical battery applications. The calculated low activation enthalpy for Li-ion migration well below the crystal melting temperature and superionic transport near the Li sublattice melting state explain the experimentally observed phenomena. Our study identifies mobile Li vacancies and anion disorder as the primary driving mechanisms for superionic Li+ conductivity in the antiperovskites. This work unveils essential working principles of the Li-rich antiperovskites, which are crucial to further exploration, development, and application of these and other charge-inverted materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:MAX phases and its derived two-dimensional MXenes have attracted considerable interest because of their rich structural chemistry and multifunctional applications. Lewis acid molten salt route provides an opportunity for structure design and performance manipulation of new MAX phases and MXenes, Although a series of new MAX phases and MXenes were successfully prepared via Lewis acid melt route in recent years, few work is explored on nitride MAX phases and MXenes. Herein, a new copper-based 413-type Ti4CuN3 MAX phase was synthesized through isomorphous replacement reaction using Ti4AlN3 MAX phase precursor in molten CuCl2. In addition, it was found that at high temperature Ti4N3Cl x MXene will transform into two-dimensional cubic TiN α nanosheets with improved structural stability.

Stacking Faults Assist Lithium-Ion Conduction in a Halide-Based Superionic Conductor

Abstract:In the pursuit of urgently-needed, energy dense solid-state batteries for electric vehicle and portable electronics applications, halide solid electrolytes offer a promising path forward with exceptional compatibility against high-voltage oxide electrodes, tunable ionic conductivities, and facile processing. For this family of compounds, synthesis protocols strongly affect cation site disorder and modulate Li+ mobility. In this work, we reveal the presence of a high concentration of stacking faults in the superionic conductor Li3YCl6 and demonstrate a method of controlling its Li+ conductivity by tuning the defect concentration with synthesis and heat treatments at select temperatures. Leveraging complementary insights from variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, density functional theory, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we identify the nature of planar defects and the role of nonstoichiometry in lowering Li+ migration barriers and increasing Li site connectivity in mechanochemically-synthesized Li3YCl6. We harness paramagnetic relaxation enhancement to enable 89Y solid-state NMR, and directly contrast the Y cation site disorder resulting from different preparation methods, demonstrating a potent tool for other researchers studying Y-containing compositions. With heat treatments at temperatures as low as 333 K (60°C), we decrease the concentration of planar defects, demonstrating a simple method for tuning the Li+ conductivity. Findings from this work are expected to be generalizable to other halide solid electrolyte candidates and provide an improved understanding of defect-enabled Li+ conduction in this class of Li-ion conductors.

Abstract:Al2Mo3O12 is a typical negative thermal expansion (NTE) material, whose thermal expansion behavior depends on its crystal phase. The thermal shock caused by temperature-induced phase transition limits its wide application. The two series of Al2. xScxMo3O12 (0 < x < 1) and Al2Mo3-xWxO12 (0 < x < 2.5) solid solutions with controllable phase transition temperature were synthesized via single cation substitution at the A or B position. The problem of thermal shock caused by the change of temperature is effectively solved in the synthesized Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 and Al2Mo0.5W2.5O12, showing stable NTE performance above room temperature, and the coefficients of thermal expansion of which are -2.19 x 10-6 degrees C-1 in 100-550 degrees C and -4.25 x 10-6 degrees C-1 in 85-500 degrees C, respectively. A-site cation substitution is a more effective way to tune the thermal expansion properties of Al2Mo3O12, which is attributed to the fact that the bond strength of A-O is weaker than that of B-O in the compound.
