Abstract:Spinel ferrite/metal composite thin films of MFe2O4/Fe (M = Zn, Mg) with controlled grain sizes and shape were directly fabricated by a soft solution-processing route that involved the liquid−solid interfacial hydrothermal reaction of an Fe substrate with metal ions M2+ (M = Zn, Mg) in ammonia solution at lower temperatures (<200 °C). The grain particles of ZnFe2O4/Fe composite thin films show a well-developed octahedral shape with highly {111} preferential orientation, whereas the grain particles of MgFe2O4/Fe thin films displayed spherical shape. The saturation magnetization of the ferrite/Fe composites thin films was found to be much improved compared with that of single-phase ferrite products, and the ferrite/Fe thin films displayed superparamagnetism. The present soft-solution processing route will be extended to fabricate other novel ceramic/metal composite thin films.

Abstract:In recent years, various methods have been developed for the synthesis of single phase ferrite nanomaterials. Most approaches involve the use of high temperatures or the preparation of powders. Ceramic/metal nanocomposites and composite thin films have attracted much attention because of their unique mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties. Here, we introduce a new kind of magnetic material, which we have called ferrite/metal composite thin films. Spinel thin films M Fe2O4/Fe (M = Zn, Mg) with controlled grain sizes and shapes were directly fabricated on an Fe substrate by a soft solution processing route at temperatures below 200 degreesC. The cooperative magnetic performance of the ferrite/Fe composite thin films was found to be much improved compared to that of single-phase ferrite products, the ferrite/Fe thin films displayed superparamagnetism.

Abstract:Dense, homogeneous, and fine-grained multiferroic BaTiO3/(Ni0.5Zn0.5)Fe2O4 composite ceramics are synthesized by a novel powder-in-sol precursor hybrid processing route. This route includes the dispersion of nanosized BaTiO3 ferroelectric powders prepared via conventional sold-state ceramic process into (Ni0.5Zn0.5)Fe2O4 ferromagnetic sol-gel precursor prepared via a sol-gel wet chemistry process. The composite ceramics show coexistence of obvious ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature. Very low dielectric loss of about 0.02-0.0067 in the range of 10 kHz-10 MHz can be achieved, which is about an order of magnitude lower than the results of many reports using conventional processes at room temperature. The combination of high permeability and permittivity with low losses in the ceramics enables significant miniaturization of electronic devices based on the ceramics. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of novel hard/soft ferrite composites particles with improved magnetic properties and exchange coupling

Abstract:SrFe12O19/Zn0.4Co0.2Ni0.4Fe2O4 hard/soft ferrite composite particles with 20, 40, 60 and 80 wt.% of soft phase were prepared by one-pot sol-gel auto-combustion and physical mixing methods. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to characterize the structural and magnetic properties of the samples. XRD spectrum revealed the formation of mixed ferrite phases in the composite particles. The hysteresis loops of the samples showed the presence of exchange coupling between the hard and soft ferrites. The composite particles with 20 and 60 wt.% of the soft phase demonstrated the highest Mr/Ms ratio, i.e. 0.29 and 0.28, respectively. In addition, the highest Ms, Mr and Hc were achieved in the composite particles with 40, 60 and 20 wt.% of the soft phase, respectively. Compared to the physical mixing method (PM), the composite particles prepared by the sol-gel auto-combustion method (OP) demonstrated better magnetic properties. The exchange coupling interaction between the hard and soft ferrite phases was similar in both methods. These composite particles exhibited magnetically single phase behaviour, however, the saturation magnetization was lower in the physical mixing pared to that of the one-pot method.

Abstract:An innovative and effective technological process is proposed to synthetize spinel manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) by a microwave-assisted oxidization roasting process. In the current paper, the effect of operating variables on the formation mechanism of Fe-MnO systems for synthesizing spinel MnFe2O4 is initially investigated to reveal the oxidation mechanism and phase transformation during the micro-wave-assisted oxidative roasting process. The synthetic MnFe2O4 microparticles with a saturation mag-netization (Ms) of 70.5 emu/g, a coercivity (Hc) of 4.65 Oe and a ratio of the saturation magnetization to remanent magnetization (Ms/Mr) of 0.055 were successfully prepared by heating for 30 min at 1000 degrees C in an air atmosphere. The MnFe2O4 samples exhibited normal and inverse spinel crystal structures, inevita-bly coexisting and co-transforming simultaneously at high temperature (>= 950 degrees C). Furthermore, this innovative and effective technological process can be extended to fabricate other spinel ferrite particles of interest. Abstract:Multiferroic BaTiO3-(Ni0.5Zn0.5) Fe2O4 (BT-NZFO) ceramic composites were prepared by a novel hybrid process. In this route, nano-sized BaTiO3 powders prepared by conventional solid-state ceramic processing were dispersed into (Ni0.5Zn0.5) Fe2O4 sol-gel precursor. Uniformly distributed suspension/slurry was obtained after ball milling. Dense, homogeneous, and fine-grained ceramic composites with attractive magnetic and dielectric properties were obtained from the slurry at low sintering temperatures. The ferromagnetic and electric hysteresis curves of the ceramic composites have been observed at room temperature. Very low dielectric loss of about 0.02 similar to 0.0067 in the range of 10 kHz similar to 2 MHz can be achieved. The combination of higher inductance and capacitance enables significant miniaturization of electronic devices based on the ceramics.
Preparation of the Percolative Nickel-Zinc Ferrite/Barium Titanate Composite Ceramics with Liquid-Solid Hybrid Method

Abstract:Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/BaTiO3 composite powders are synthesized by the liquid-solid hybrid method through mixing BaTiO3 sol and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 powder together,in which the BaTiO3 sol is prepared by sol-gel method and the Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 powder is synthesized by self-combustion method.The Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/BaTiO3 composite ceramics are successfully prepared by pressing powder into green pellets and rings,and then sintering at different temperatures.The influences of ferrite phase on both the dielectric and magnetic properties of the composite are studied.The results show that,similar to the percolation behavior,the dielectric constant increases exponentially with increasing ferrite phase when its mole fraction is below 50% in the composite;while it remains almost a constant of about 10 000 F/m when the ferrite phase is more than 50%.The permeability of the composite increases from 5 to 18 H/m as ferrite phase increases from about 50% to 90%.It is clear that the composite ceramics with high dielectric constant and acceptable permeability can be obtained via the liquid-solid hybrid method.

Abstract:Fe-based α-Fe2O3/nano-sized MgO-coated soft magnetic composites were fabricated by powder metallurgy with 800 MPa pressure at room temperature, and then annealed at 400 ℃. A layer of iron oxide α-Fe2O3 was generated on the iron surface by passivation treatment. The processed iron powders were coated with nano-sized MgO by mixing method. The soft magnetic composites with sandwich structure (Fe + iron oxide + nano-sized MgO) resulted in an increased permeability at a higher frequency, and higher eddy current loss compared to that of the resin layer by the two-step annealing method, which indicates that the sandwich structure for the soft magnetic composites exhibited noticeably higher frequency stability. The relationship between compressed load and displacement for two kinds of soft magnetic composites implied that the density and stress release for iron play a leading role in the mechanical properties. The stress field analysis of the internal microstructure by finite element method shows that the cracks and pores are two important factors that affect the mechanical strength for the whole material.

Abstract:To date, an urgent problem for various metal-based soft magnetic composites (SMCs) is that it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high strength and optimum magnetic performance, which actually restricts their large-scale applications in many electromagnetic fields. In this work, we have tried to resolve this basic problem by proposing a new concept of low-temperature solid-phase reaction densification instead of conventional particle-deformation densification to fabricate high-performance metal-based SMCs. Specifically, fully-densified nanoscale amorphous Al 2 SiO 5 coating layers are formed through a solid phase reaction at 500 °C between initially-prepared nano-sized amorphous SiO 2 and amorphous Al 2 O 3 , and meanwhile coated in situ on the surface of deformed Fe to fabricate novelly-structured Fe/amorphous-Al 2 SiO 5 SMCs. The low-temperature solid-phase reaction for fabrication of Fe/amorphous-Al 2 SiO 5 SMCs can avoid negative effects of high processing temperature for conventional metal-based SMCs on their structure and magnetism resulting in their high strength, increased resistivity, low core loss and high saturation magnetic inductions. Thus, Fe/amorphous-Al 2 SiO 5 SMCs show synergistically enhanced structural and soft magnetic properties, which exceed those of most conventional metal-based SMCs. This work also provides a special and useful insight into the design and applications of metal-based composites needing both functional and structural properties.

Abstract:A novel and general processing (heterogeneous nucleation and growth processing) was used to prepare composite coating particles with homogeneous component distribution. Composite coating particles consisting of α‐Al2O3 cores with an outer amorphous silica layer were prepared by this processing using an ethanol suspension containing ammonia, tetraethylorthosilicate and α‐Al2O3. Fine mullite powders (d50 = 0.73 μm) were fabricated by calcinating these particles at 1500 °C for 2 h.

Abstract:Our study is focused on optimizing the synthesis conditions for the in situ oxidation of Fe particles to produce Fe@Fe3O4 core–shell powder and preparation via co-precipitation of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles to produce Fe@Fe3O4/ZnFe2O4 soft magnetic composites (SMC) through a hybrid cold-sintering/spark plasma-sintering technique. XRD and FTIR measurements confirmed the formation of a nanocrystalline oxide layer on the surface of Fe powder and the nanosized nature of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. SEM-EDX investigations revealed that the oxidic phase of our composite was distributed on the surface of the Fe particles, forming a quasi-continuous matrix. The DC magnetic characteristics of the composite compact revealed a saturation induction of 0.8 T, coercivity of 590 A/m, and maximum relative permeability of 156. AC magnetic characterization indicated that for frequencies higher than 1 kHz and induction of 0.1 T, interparticle eddy current losses dominated due to ineffective electrical insulation between neighboring particles in the composite compact. Nevertheless, the magnetic characteristics obtained in both DC and AC magnetization regimes were comparable to those reported for cold-sintered Fe-based SMCs.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) CoFe2O4–Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 composite thin films have been prepared by a sol-gel process and spin-coating technique. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy reveal that there exists local aggregation or phase separation of the CoFe2O4 and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 phases in the films. Vibrating sample magnetometer, ferroelectric test unit, and magnetoelectric measuring device were used to characterize the magnetic and ferroelectric properties, as well as the ME effect of the films. It is shown that the films exhibit both good magnetic and ferroelectric properties, as well as a ME effect. A high initial magnetoelectric voltage coefficient for the film is observed. The ME effect of the film strongly depends on the magnetic bias and magnetic field frequency.

Abstract:Ferroelectric/ferrimagnetic PbTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite thin films with nano-scale PbTiO3 and NiFe2O4 phases homogeneously dispersed in each other were synthesized by sol–gel in situ method. The phase structure and morphology of the composite thin films and their dielectric, ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties were measured respectively in detail. Results show that the ferroelectric/ferrimagnetic composite thin film with PbTiO3 and NiFe2O4 phases is successfully synthesized at heat-treatment temperature of 850°C. It is significantly isotropic due to the nanometer scale grain size of the constituent PbTiO3 and NiFe2O4 phases. A capacitance of 60–100pF with a good frequency independence over the conventional applied frequency range, ferroelectric hysteresis loops with the applied electric field of 500kV/cm, a saturation magnetization higher than 4.8MT, and a coercive field of 5280A/m with well suitable ferrimagnetic properties are obtained from the thin film with the composition ratio PbTiO3/NiFe2O4 of 50/50 post heat-treated at 850°C. The ferroelectric/ferrimagnetic composite thin film is desirable for multifunctional device application.

Abstract:ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 composite hollow nanospheres were successfully fabricated via a facile one-pot solvothermal method, utilizing polyethylene glycol as soft template. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the prepared nanospheres with cubic spinel and rhombohedra composite structure had a uniform diameter of about 370nm, and the hollow structure could be further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared techniques were also applied to characterize the elemental composition and chemical bonds in the hollow nanospheres. The ZnFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 composite hollow nanospheres show attractive light absorption property for potential applications in electronics, optics, and catalysis.
Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Grain Boundary Insulated Fe/Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 Soft Magnetic Composites

Abstract:Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nano-powder was coated on Fe microparticles by mechanical ball milling combined with high-temperature annealing. The effects of milling time on the particle size, phase structure and magnetic properties of core-shell powder were studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the surface of the milled composite powder was composed of thin layers of uniform Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 insulating powder. SEM also revealed a cell structure of Fe particles, indicating that the Fe particles were well separated and isolated by the thin Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 layers. Then, Fe/Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 soft magnetic composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The amplitude permeability of Fe/Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 SMCs in the Fe/Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 soft magnetic composites was stable. The resistivity decreased with the increase in sintering temperature. The loss of the composite core was obviously less than that of the iron powder core. Hence, the preparation method of Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 insulating iron powder is promising for reducing core loss and improving the magnetic properties of soft magnetic composites.

Abstract:This study focuses on the use of nano ferrites with the chemical formula Mg0.8Zn0.2SmxFe2−xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015, 0.02, and 0.025) prepared through the citrate-gel auto-combustion (CGAC) method. The analysis of nanoparticles with a cubic spinel structure involved the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and various imaging techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM & EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The crystallite size ranges from 96.4 to 719.0 nm, and the lattice parameter a (Å) ranges from 8.44 to 8.38, decreasing with the size of the nano ferrites. FTIR spectrometer frequency ranges from 559.5 to 772.0 was confirmed. We analyzed the material’s thermo-electric and electrical properties, finding a Curie temperature range of 423–613 and activation energy values of 0.002–0.001 for both EP and EF. We used a VSM to assess retentivity value, magnetization, coercivity, and hysteresis loops, yielding valuable insights into the material’s properties. The conduction in the present ferrites was majorly due to the grain boundary mechanism, which was confirmed through impedance analysis. Ferrite samples exhibit a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, rendering them the optimal option for electromagnetic devices functioning at high frequencies. The study also highlighted the importance of the Mg–Zn–Sm nanoparticle structural DC resistivity and DC conductivity, as well as the VSM room temperature. Spinel ferrite is a versatile material that can be used in magnetic memories, high-frequency, and electronic devices due to its unique properties like DC electrical resistivity and conductivity. In the case of the inverse spinel structure of magnesium iron oxide, the octahedral site is preferred by magnesium cations with a higher probability.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric CoFe2O4-PZT (lead zirconate titanate) films as thick as 1 mu m have been prepared by spin coating using a PZT sol-gel solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone and CoFe2O4 powder. X-ray diffraction result reveals that there exists no chemical reaction or phase diffusion between the CoFe2O4 and PZT phases. The scanning electron microscopy observation confirms that the composite thick film is crack-free and has a well-defined microstructure. The composite thick films exhibit good magnetic and ferroelectric properties, as well as distinct magnetoelectric coupling behavior. The magnetoelectric coupling mechanism for the present composite thick film is discussed in detail. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A novel synthetic process has been developed to fabricate the magnetic alloy/spinel ferrite composite nanofibers. By employing the electrospinning technique and subsequent partial reduction, Fe-Ni alloy/ nickel ferrite composite nanofibers with an average diameter of around 170 nm were successfully prepared. The synthesized composite nanofibers consist of the face centered cubic and body centered cubic phases of Fe-Ni alloy and the spinel phase of nickel ferrite, and have novel magnetic properties with much enhanced coercivity and saturation magnetization as compared with the pristine nickel ferrite nanofibers. Abstract:Well crystallized ZnFe2O4 ultrafine particles with octahedral shape and a size of 300nm were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction using metal Zn sheet and FeCl2 as reactants in ammonia solutions at 180°C. As-prepared ferrite particles display high magnetization with maximum saturation magnetization (σmax) 61.2emgg−1 at 80K and 54.6emgg−1 at 300K, respectively. The results demonstrated that hydrothermal process is an effective pathway for producing high quality ferrite ultrafine particles.
Microstructure, magnetic properties and exchange–coupling interactions for one-dimensional hard/soft ferrite nanofibers

Abstract:SrFe12O19 (SFO)/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 (NZFO) composite ferrite nanofibers with diameters about 120nm have been prepared by the electrospinning and calcination process. The SFO/NZFO composite ferrites are formed after calcined at 700°C for 2h and the composite nanofibers with various mass ratios obtained at 900°C are fabricated from NZFO grains about 16–40nm and SFO grains of 19–45nm with a uniform phase distribution. With the SFO ferrite content increasing, the coercivity (Hc) and remanence (Mr) for the composite ferrite nanofibers initially increase, reaching maximum values of 379.8kA/m (297K) and 242.2kA/m (77K), 39.1Am2/kg (297K) and 53.5Am2/kg (77K), respectively, at a mass ratio (SFO:NZFO) of 4, and then show a reduction tendency with a further increase of the mass ratio. This enhancement in magnetic properties is attributed to the competition of the exchange–coupling interaction and the dipolar interaction in the composite nanofibers.
