Abstract:We demonstrate the potential of electrons for single molecule diffraction and imaging using C60 molecules confined inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (C60s@SWCNT or peapod) as a model system. A 25nm diameter electron beam from a field emission gun source is used to record diffraction patterns from individual peapods using imaging plates. The electron beam illuminates about 25 C60 molecules. Experimentally, we found that the molecules diffract inside ∼15% of the host nanotubes. With the help of simulations, we explore the limits of electron molecular diffraction and its sensitivity to the molecular configurations. We show that the combination of electron diffraction and electron direct imaging provides the best approach to single molecule imaging.
Molecular Packing of Fullerenes Inside Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We report a first electron diffraction study of the C60s packing inside individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (C60s at SWCNT or peapod). Diffraction patterns from a single peapod were recorded using a nanometer-sized electron beam at 80kV. Determination of the peapod structure, including the diameter (D) and chiral angle of the SWCNT, and the average spacing between C60s along the tube direction (ZC60) are performed. The determined ZC60 increases from around 9.03 to 9.69Å as D increases from around 14.17 to 14.38Å, while in large diameter SWCNTs with D larger than 14.5Å, a significant reduction in ZC60 takes place. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reproduce the same reduction in ZC60, due to the well-known linear-to-zigzag transition. More importantly, prior to the linear-to-zigzag transition, a 1D-to-3D transition of C60s configuration is predicted. The resulting expansion of accessible volume is likely to contribute to the observed increasing ZC60 as a function of increasing SWCNT diameter before D reaching 14.5Å.

Abstract:The microstructural features of the powder C60 material have been studied by using scanning microscopy, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy observation reveals that the grains in the samples are packed by extensively disordered crystallites as well as amorphous granules. Electron diffraction measurements have identified that the crystals of C60 have two kinds of structure, one is face-centered-cubic (fcc) with unit cell parameter a = 1.41 nm, and the other has the hexagonal closest packed (hcp) structure with cell parameters a = 0.958 nm and c = 1.63 nm. High resolution electron microscopy as well as electron diffraction observations clearly show the random crystallites packing in the C60 grains.

Abstract:The precisely defined geometry of phenylacetylene dendrimers and macrocycles makes it possible to investigate systematic variations in chemical architecture on the nature of microstructural organization. Here we report on transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy studies of crystalline phases of these synthetic materials. Since the molecules are sensitive to electron beam damage, low-dose techniques were used to capture images and diffraction patterns dynamically. The data show increased crystal misorientation with increasing side-group length and molecular complexity. As the size increases, the number of conformations available to the molecule also increases, making it difficult to pack the molecules with fewer defects.

Abstract:We present a detailed electron diffraction study of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. A novel sample preparation procedure provides well-separated, long and straight individual single-shell nanotubes. Diffraction experiments are carried out at 60kV, below the threshold for knock-on damage in carbon nanotubes. We describe experimental parameters that allow single-tube electron diffraction experiments with widely available thermal emission transmission electron microscopes. Further, we review the simulation of diffraction patterns for these objects.

Abstract:Here we show how a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy can be applied to characterize the carbon nanostructures. Direct imaging of the hexagonal network of carbon nanotube enables us to determine the chiral index and to visualize the topological defects, such as pentagons and heptagons. Individual molecular imaging has also become possible, and atomic structure of fullerene molecules (C-60 and C-80) has been successfully identified at a single-molecular basis. Some recent progress for in situ observation of the carbon nanotube/fullerene growth and the defect dynamics is also presented.

Abstract:Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) encapsulating C60 fullerenes were successfully synthesized by gas phase diffusion method. The obtained peapods were examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The HRTEM images indicate that the ordered packing phases of fullerene molecules inside are sensitively related to the inner-tube radius of DWNTs. Also, Raman measurements were carried out for the first time to characterize DWNTs peapods. There are obvious differences between the Raman spectrum of DWNTs peapods and that of SWNTs peapods. The intensities of resonances from C60 in the former are much stronger than those in the latter. In addition, changes of tangential mode (TM) and radial breathing mode (RBM) of DWNTs after C60 doping were observed. The possible reasons are discussed in the text.

Abstract:Diffraction phenomena of large molecules had been demonstrated in many experiments, and these experiments were explained by many theoretical works. In this paper, we presented a detailed theoretical treatment of the single and double-slit diffraction of C60 with quantum theory approach, and we paid close attention to the diffraction experiment of C60 carried out by Zeilinger et al. in 1999. In double-slit diffraction, we further considered the decoherence effect, and found the theoretical results were in good accordance with experimental data.

Abstract:Electron band structure of C-60 single crystal las been investigated using synchrotron radiation. On the cleaved (111) surface of the C-60 single crystal the angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectra were measured at normal emission with varying photon energy from 12.7 to 28.2 eV. The valence band dispersions in L-Gamma-L direction were successfully observed. The dispersions are 0.94 and 0.17 eV for the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and HOMO-1 derived band respectively.

Abstract:Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been synthesized and purified. Using a water colloid, SWCNTs have been assembled at the end of a tungsten tip that can be used as the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip, and atomic resolution images of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and gold film surfaces have been obtained. The field emission properties of SWCNTs have also been studied exploiting the field emission microscopy (FEM). A field emission pattern of an SWCNT at atomic resolution was observed, which was consistent with the calculated results of the (9,9) armchair SWCNT. Electron transport properties along SWCNTs were investigated, negative differential conductance was observed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The influence of a fullerene molecule trapped inside a single-wall carbon nanotube on resonant electron transport at low temperatures and strong polaronic coupling is theoretically discussed. Strong peak to peak fluctuations and anomalous temperature behavior of conductance amplitudes are predicted and investigated. The influence of the chiral properties of carbon nanotubes on transport is also studied.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation shows that C60 molecules adsorbed on graphite tend to form clusters of different sizes, which often further aggregate to form massive stacks. Occasionally, the molecules can form quasi-close-packed monolayer structures in small areas. From these areas, with low bias voltages and high tunnel currents we have obtained STM images of C60 molecules, which have the highest resolution and contain the richest structural features, in comparison with those C60 images obtained in previous works. The success of obtaining those low-bias images indicates that those molecules had electronic states around EF. This fact together with the fact that the C60 molecules imaged in the high resolution images were not rotating imply that the graphite substrate may have strong interaction with C60 molecules. We believe that those atomic-scale features are closely related to the intramolecular structure of C60, even though to interpret them in terms of the molecular structure needs further investigation.

Abstract:The electron distribution of open-ended single-walled carbon nanotubes with chirality indexes (7,0) and (5,5) in the field emission conditions was calculated via a multi-scaled algorithm. The field emission images were produced numerically. It was found that the emission patterns change with the applied macroscopic field. Especially, the symmetry of the emission pattern of the (7,0) carbon nanotube is breaking in the lower field but the breaking is less obvious in the higher field. The enlargement factor increases with the applied macroscopic field.
