Abstract:What is the difference between agriculture and industry ? If any differences exist, to what extent are they recognised, perpetuated or even created by law ? What consequences follow from the ways in which law symbolises, sanctions and maintains a distinction between these economic sectors ? This article explores these questions with regard to European Community law. The argument of the article is three-fold. First, EC law draws a sharp distinction between agriculture and industry. Second, this legal distinction is now out of date. Third, EC law regarding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is deeply contradictory. Fourth, to the extent that equity and equality are important Community social goals, the agricultural sector, as a sector, should not be recognised in EC law as having a special legal status.

Abstract:Growing awareness of environmental costs associated with many systems of agricultural production has been paralleled by increased breadth and sophistication in environmental economics. In North America and Western Europe, in particular, this has led to steps to incorporate measures to control environmental externalities into policies for the support and regulation of agriculture; a measure of ‘greening’ has taken place in agricultural policy. In many lessdeveloped countries (LDCs) environmental issues relating to land use are even more pressing than in the industrial nations, but, as a generalisation, the central focus of concern is at a different end of the range of problems. For whereas in the industrial countries of the temperate zones, the problems of large-scale erosion and destruction of the land base are generally less pressing,1 these are urgent issues in some LDCs. On the other hand, in industrial countries there is more concern about the external costs of agriculture associated with pollution of water systems, insecticide residues, and with the degradation of the ‘wild’ environment as land is managed ever more intensively for agriculture and forestry. In addition, there is serious pollution of agriculture from the by-products of industry and urban living, particularly by ‘acid rain’.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to analyze the genesis and process of formation of industrial capital in the agrarian-industrial complex. The historical development of views of economic science on the formation of rent and agricultural production is studied. In the analysis of the current situation, exclusive attention is paid to the formation and development of vertically integrated international companies – agricultural holdings. The key trends of their current development and their negative effect on individual farming, the social sphere, land resources and ecology are shown. The current market of agricultural production and agrotrading was analyzed in terms of its largest representatives, which actually occupy an oligopolistic position and dominate in the scale of the world economy – these are the so-called "Big Five" companies – Cargill, Archer Daniels Company (ADM), Bunge Limited and Louis Dreyfus Group and China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation. Their activities and development vividly illustrate the trends in the development of industrial capital in the dominant paradigm of neoclassical politics. However, although these are typical transnational corporations at first glance, the agricultural production industry itself is very specific, which allows these companies to variably spread their influence on all links of added value creation. The tendencies of these large firms towards gradual vertical and horizontal integration aimed at diversification and gaining leverage over small farms are considered. and processing production. Development of possible strategies to counter the development of negative trends towards the monopoly position of agricultural holdings is an urgent problem of economic policy at the level of states, regions and international institutions. It is through the understanding of the development, formation and trends of industrial capital in the form of agro-industrial companies of large capitalization that the way to solving the current acute threats to food security in the world, as well as a more independent and harmonious development of farming, lies.

Abstract:This review has been necessary to bring together and interpret much of the diverse literature relating to the key areas of environmental impact associated with agriculture. The main environmental impacts of agriculture in the United Kingdom are associated with pesticides, nitrogen compounds, farm livestock wastes and soil erosion. Impacts on fauna and flora, water bodies and humans, as well as the economic costs (e.g. those involved in reducing levels of pollutants in water bodies) are considered within this paper. Agricultural activities, particularly those associated with emissions to the air and water, can have significant effects many kilometres from their place of origin. There may also be inter-related impacts. For example, pollution incidents which directly affect aquatic populations can indirectly influence recreational activities, and may have economic effects in the form of remedial water treatment and clean-up costs. It is important that management techniques and systems are developed to reduce detrimental environmental impacts associated with agriculture. The information outlined in this paper has been used to assist in the design of an integrated computer-based system to support environmental management in agriculture.

Abstract:The article discusses modern legal, managerial, digital approaches to ensuring the sustainable development of agriculture. The norms and standards of agricultural risk insurance, budget lending, organic agribusiness modeling and food safety developed by international institutions are evaluated. Methods of comparative, legal, informational analysis and scientific generalization of theoretical knowledge revealed organizational problems of budgeting and quality control of agricultural products, preventing food losses, and combating falsification of food products. It was noted that legal measures and management standards optimize agribusiness segments, reduce the number of intermediaries, and improve the trust of suppliers and consumers through direct links. The digitalization of agriculture contributes to the transparency of data exchange while reducing information imbalances and transaction costs for participants in agricultural markets. The connection of standards and norms of legal regulation of sustainable development of agriculture with food security in the EU and the EAEU is shown. The conclusions are indicated by the positive prospects for digital management of agribusiness subsidies and digital budgeting as the level increases in the EU and the EAEU. Unlike the EU, the EAEU is building a common space for organic and digital agriculture on the principles of Eurasian integration and cooperation.

Abstract:In this essay we develop a framework for analysing the major institutions governing the production and exchange of output and the primary factors of production in rural areas. The analysis incorporates general considerations of risk and information constraints jointly with the principal material attributes of agriculture and of agricultural production factors. The framework is used to analyse barriers to the existence of the major intertemporal and factor markets. It is applied specifically to land‐scarce environments for which it provides an internally consistent explanation for many of the well‐documented institutional features of such settings. In addition, the analysis provides new implications for, among other phenomena, the inter‐relationships among ownership holdings, operational scale, family size and factor productivity; for the scarcity of animal rental markets and use of animals as collateral; for the renting out of land by small landowners; and for the existence of plantations for certain crops.

Abstract:Global demand for food is increasing as is the recognition that this must be achieved with minimal negative impacts on the environment or other ecosystem services (ESs). Here we develop an understanding of the relationships among ESs delivered within temperate agricultural grassland systems in lowland Europe. We reviewed the refereed literature on pair-wise interactions between nine different ESs. These were agricultural production, climate regulation, air quality regulation, water quality regulation, hydrological regulation, soil erosion regulation, nutrient cycling, biodiversity conservation, and landscape quality. For each pair, we sought information on how each ES responds to changes in the other. Each interaction was assigned to one of five categories: (i) no direct relationship between the driving ES on the responding ES, (ii) the driving ES has a negative impact on the responding ES, (iii) the driving ES has a positive impact on the responding ES, (iv) the evidence of direction of effect is inconclusive, because of either inadequate information or contradictions in the literature, and (v) there is no current evidence in the current literature for a relationship. Negative relationships resulted only from the effects of increasing the intensity of agricultural production on other ESs. Available evidence infers that erosion regulation and good nutrient cycling were the only two driving ESs shown to enhance agricultural production implying that their protection will enhance our ability to meet future food needs. In order for agriculture to become more sustainable, we need to develop agricultural methods that can minimize the negative impacts of these win–lose relationships.
