Abstract:Agricultural law is a subject in law aiming at regulating the very agriculture and rural economic relations.It is not only behavior rule for principal part of agricultural law, such as agricultural organization and peasants or farmers,undertaking agricultural and rural economic activity, but also important means for the state leading, organizing,harmonizing and supervising agriculture and rural economy and powerful instrument in promoting agriculture and rural economy to grow continuously, steadily and healthily.Agricultural law has basic properties, characters and principles of its own, and it has grown up into a remarkable flower in the garden of law in our state.
A Framework for Economic Analysis of Cropping Systems: Profitability, Risk Management, and Resource Allocation

Abstract:SUMMARY A cropping system must be economically viable for it to be sustainable. This study focuses upon the economic components of profitability, risk management potential, and optimal resource allocation. Some of the primary aspects of economic analysis of cropping systems to a broad multidisciplinary audience of researchers, extension specialists, graduate students, and senior undergraduate students are addressed. Analytical economic tools are discussed including data requirements, advantages, and disadvantages of each method. A case study of a Henderson, Kentucky producer is presented as a primary example along with empirical applications from the literature. The importance of various types of economic analysis is demonstrated through the selection of different production decisions dependent on the level of economic analysis included.

Abstract:Abstract This book contains 19 chapters on the application of animal nutrition science, including nutrients and important feed constituents and their functions, drinking water, feed digestion, feed digestibility, feed nutritive value, animal feeds, feed intake, nutrient requirements, ration formulation, nutritional models, feed additives, feed-borne pathogens/toxins/nutrient deficiencies, feed-related non-infectious diseases, grazing behaviour, grazing management, assessing nutritional status and nutrient supplements for grazing animals, feed storage and handling, feed processing and the environmental impact of animal production. It is intended for undergraduates taking courses in animal nutrition, farmers and advisors who want to broaden their understanding of animal feeding and management and scientists who would like to see how their research interests integrate into practical animal feeding.

Abstract:Changes in the structure of Agriculture and more particularly in food and natural fiber production during the last two decades have served to focus attention on the neglected area of farm financial management. Technical farm production decisions are becoming less difficult relative to financial decisions. Financial management is not only becoming more important but is vitally connected with problems of what is going to happen to family firms; what form of business organization should they use to acquire capital, how should they obtain capital, and how should management be obtained and organized. Financial institutions are also facing some serious questions for which answers are scarce, not only because of lack of available information, but also because of conceptual voids. This paper discusses these problems particularly as they relate to relevant areas for research inquiry. Summary It is unlikely that the changes giving rise to the need for more attention to the agricultural finance areas will slow down in the foreseeable future. Financial parameters will be the major determinants of the entrepreneurial independence of family size and large food and natural fiber producers. The financial problems already confronting farming are numerous and complex, and the task ahead for the agricultural economists is great since time cannot be neutral in its effect if progress is to be achieved.

Abstract:Abstract The study of international trade in agricultural products has developed rapidly over the past fifty years. In the 1960s the disarray in world agriculture caused by domestic price support policies became the focus of analytical studies. There followed attempts to measure the distortions caused by policies also in developing countries and to model their impact on world agricultural markets. Tools were advanced to explain the trends and variations in world prices and the implications of market imperfections. Challenges for the future include analyzing trade based on consumer preferences for certain production methods and understanding the impact of climate change mitigation and adaptation on trade.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the reasons why agricultural and applied economics and similar departments are often stand‐alone academic units. The factors that affect and shape the relationship of agricultural and applied economics faculty and departments with those from general economics departments are discussed. We present case studies of three universities having different relationships with general economics faculty at their respective universities: a merged unit, an unmerged unit, and a never‐merged unit. We conclude with rationale for the existence and future trajectory of agricultural economics and related academic units at Land Grant Universities.

Abstract:In this essay we develop a framework for analysing the major institutions governing the production and exchange of output and the primary factors of production in rural areas. The analysis incorporates general considerations of risk and information constraints jointly with the principal material attributes of agriculture and of agricultural production factors. The framework is used to analyse barriers to the existence of the major intertemporal and factor markets. It is applied specifically to land‐scarce environments for which it provides an internally consistent explanation for many of the well‐documented institutional features of such settings. In addition, the analysis provides new implications for, among other phenomena, the inter‐relationships among ownership holdings, operational scale, family size and factor productivity; for the scarcity of animal rental markets and use of animals as collateral; for the renting out of land by small landowners; and for the existence of plantations for certain crops.

Abstract:Growing awareness of environmental costs associated with many systems of agricultural production has been paralleled by increased breadth and sophistication in environmental economics. In North America and Western Europe, in particular, this has led to steps to incorporate measures to control environmental externalities into policies for the support and regulation of agriculture; a measure of ‘greening’ has taken place in agricultural policy. In many lessdeveloped countries (LDCs) environmental issues relating to land use are even more pressing than in the industrial nations, but, as a generalisation, the central focus of concern is at a different end of the range of problems. For whereas in the industrial countries of the temperate zones, the problems of large-scale erosion and destruction of the land base are generally less pressing,1 these are urgent issues in some LDCs. On the other hand, in industrial countries there is more concern about the external costs of agriculture associated with pollution of water systems, insecticide residues, and with the degradation of the ‘wild’ environment as land is managed ever more intensively for agriculture and forestry. In addition, there is serious pollution of agriculture from the by-products of industry and urban living, particularly by ‘acid rain’.

Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy

Abstract:Agricultural and Applied Economics departments in the United States have evolved to serve traditional and new stakeholders under the three‐legged land grant mission: extension, research, and teaching. Substantial shifts in the focus of faculty, sometimes matching demand from stakeholders and sometimes not, raise fundamental questions about their strategic direction. We argue agricultural and applied economics has a mission to solve problems, current and future, by working with physical sciences; specifically, the study of economic problems of the food supply chain and bioeconomy. By focusing on this mission, agricultural and applied economics will provide more value‐added to society and may even improve economics while doing so.

Abstract:This paper acknowledges the importance of developing the agricultural e-marketplaces, and analyzes the types, players and especially price mechanisms of it. Then, we focus on valuating the transaction costs of the agricultural e-marketplace. It is widely accepted that agricultural e-markets take a dynamic role in the products value chains. Due to the special characteristics of agricultural products, the marketplace outside the virtual space is also important during the transaction. The problems of transaction costs through e-markets and the diminishing numbers of online agricultural e-markets are discussed in details. The results of the study should be of great academic and practical importance. Not only does it provide a mechanistic understanditig of agricultural e-marketplace, it also gives a guideline of strategic promotion for its further development.

Abstract:International transmission mechanism of agricultural product price fluctuation has become a hot topic in recent years.Understanding the rules of agricultural product price fluctuation is of great significance for government's to implement macro-control and reduce the adverse impact of international transmission mechanism of agricultural product price fluctuation on home market.Currently,the policy of most countries in the world is built upon the assumption of symmetric price transmission.However,a large number of empirical tests indicate that the symmetric price transmission is unrealistic in practice,on the contrary,it is asymmetry.The existing research is not yet complete,therefore,this paper makes a literature review based on the asymmetric perspective,and places emphasis on international transmission and asymmetric transmission of agricultural product price volatility.

Abstract:An integrated foundation is presented to study the impacts of external forcings on irrigated agricultural systems. Individually, models are presented that simulate groundwater hydrogeology and econometric farm level crop choices and irrigated water use. The natural association between groundwater wells and agricultural parcels is employed to couple these models using geographic information science technology and open modeling interface protocols. This approach is used to study the collective action problem of the common pool. Three different policies (existing, regulation, and incentive based) are studied in the semiarid grasslands overlying the Ogallala Aquifer in the central United States. Results show that while regulation using the prior appropriation doctrine and incentives using a water buy‐back program may each achieve the same level of water savings across the study region, each policy has a different impact on spatial patterns of groundwater declines and farm level economic activity. This represents the first time that groundwater and econometric models of irrigated agriculture have been integrated at the well‐parcel level and provides methods for scientific investigation of this coupled natural‐human system. Results are useful for science to inform decision making and public policy debate.

Abstract:Abstract Agricultural economics and agribusiness (AEAB) programs offer their graduates unique exposure to agricultural markets, policy, and production systems, which differentiates them from business programs. Despite the advantages associated with AEAB degrees, a significant challenge universities and AEAB graduates face is a general lack of recognition of what agricultural economics is and what an agricultural economist does. Using data collected from U.S. 1862 and 1890 land grant universities, we stress the importance of designing effective AEAB curricula based on enrollment trends, the desired attributes of graduates, and the current structure of AEAB undergraduate programs.
