Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:Photolysis of aminopolycarboxylates with C 60 has been shown to be an effective method for the preparation of isomerically pure fullerene derivatives.A series of fullerroaminopolycar boxylate derivatives have been prepared by this method.For example,glycine esters react with C 60 to give C 60 (ROOCCHNHCHCOOR),the mechanism of which is proposed to involve complicated bond breaking and formation processes.Aminoacid esters with secondary and tertiary amino groups can add to C 60 by simply losing two H atoms.Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate(EDTA) with C 60 yields the EDTA containing fullerene monoadduct C 60 (MeOOCCH) 2NCH 2CH 2N(CH 2COOMe) 2.Compared to well known 1,3 dipole addition method of fulleropyrrolidine preparation,the photoreaction reported here avoids the use of aldehydes or ketones and is specially suited for the preparation of the fullerene containing complexones such as the EDTA C 60 derivative.Langmuir Blodgett film formation and the photoelectric properties of these fulleropyrrolidine ccompounds are investigated.Due to the presence of hydrophilic groups the derivatives form stable and transferable monolayer.By using metal ion sonlution as the subphase,metal complexes of the fullerocarboxylic derivatives are prepared at the air/water interface.Photoelctrical behavior of the LB film fabricated on ITO are studied under various conditions.For most of the compounds electrons flow from the electrolyte through the LB film to the ITO.The quantum yield of the fullerene derivatives can reach 8%.

Abstract:Hexachloro[60]fullerene, C60Cl6, was reacted with a mixture of ROH/H2O (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, (CH2)(2)C CH) to form both C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) and C60Cl(OR)(5). Only the C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) were isolated with bulky alcohols, ROH (R = (CH2)(3)C CH, (CH2)(4)C CH). Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides, C-60(O)(OR)(4), were prepared by treating C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) with CuI. The epoxy moiety could be hydrolyzed to the vicinal diol derivatives, C-60(OH)(2)(OR)(4), and then oxidized to form dicarbonyl open-cage fullerenes, C60O2(OR)(4). CuI was found to convert the terminal alkynyl addends into iodoalkynyl addends on the C-60 cage.

Abstract:Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides C-60(O)Ar-n(NR2)(4-n), n = 1, 2, have been prepared by treating 1,4-adducts C-60(OH)Ph and C-60(Tol)(2) with cyclic secondary amines. The epoxy moieties in these mixed tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides were hydrolyzed into the corresponding diol derivatives, which were further oxidized into diketone open-cage fullerenes with a 10-membered orifice. A few other reactions also showed that the present tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides with both amino and aryl addends exhibit improved chemical reactivity over the tetraamino[60]fullerene epoxide without any aryl group.

Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:A series of isomerically pure alkynyl-substituted fullerenol derivatives such as C-60(OH)(6)(O(CH2)(3)CCH)(2) were synthesized through Lewis acid catalyzed epoxy ring opening and/or S(N)1 replacement reactions starting from the fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(t-BuOO)(4). Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition readily converted the terminal alkynyl groups into triazole groups. Intramolecular oxidative alkyne coupling afforded a fullerenyl crown ether derivative.

Abstract:Buckminsterfullerenes have been conjugated to CdSe nanocrystals by exchanging trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) ligands on the CdSe nanocrystals with C60-bound dithiocarbamate ligands. To improve solubility of the C60-capped CdSe nanocrystals, a small molecular weight dithiocarbamate ligand was used as the coligand in the ligand-exchange reaction. The as synthesized (C60)8−CdSe conjugates were purified by dialysis against ethanol and characterized by 1H NMR, UV−vis, and transmission electron microscopy. Photoelectrochemistry of a film cast from the (C60)8−CdSe conjugate revealed a significantly enhanced photocurrent compared with the film of CdSe−TOPO nanocrystals as well as that of C60 alone, suggesting that our conjugation strategy is viable for efficient photoinduced charge separation, transport, and collection.

Abstract:4-Methylpiperidine (MePi) reacts with C-60 in the presence of DCC to form C-60(MePi)(4)(DCC). Abstract:The films of an amphiphilic C-60-EDTA (C(60)EA) and its tetramethyl ester (C60EM), prepared both by drop-coating and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, were studied by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile solutions of tetra-12-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate as the supporting electrolyte. The drop-coated film of C60EM displayed four pairs of redox peaks, which vanished after a few cycles due to the film dissolution. For the LB film of C60EM, three irreversible reduction peaks were observed. Both the drop-coated and the LB film of C(60)EA showed two irreversible reduction peaks.

Abstract:A reinvestigation of the reaction between C-60(2-) and benzyl bromide in benzonitrile containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) has shown that there are more reaction products than previously reported. Use of a silica rather than a "Buckyclutcher I" column for HPLC purification led to isolation of two previously unattained products in the reaction mixture, one of which was identified as 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 by UV-vis and NMR. The earlier incorrectly assigned 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 was identified as the methanofullerene C61HPh by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The electrochemistry of genuine 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 shows that its first reduction potential in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP is cathodically shifted by 100 mV with respect to E-1/2 for reduction of 1,4-(PhCH2)(2)C-60, indicating that the addition pattern significantly affects the electrochemistry of derivatized C-60. Visible and near-IR spectra of the monoanion and dianion of 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 are also reported.

Abstract:Several analogous C-58 open-cage fullerene derivatives have been prepared through silver acetate mediated decarboxylation of the corresponding C-59 open-cage precursors. These C-58 open-cage fullerene derivatives can trap one water molecule under mild conditions as shown by spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:A water soluble -cyclodextrin (-CD) functionalized [60]fullerene (C-60-CD) was synthesized. The C-60-CD-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and DNA-cleavage ability and cytotoxicity of C-60-CD were studied upon visible light irradiation, demonstrating that the compound is very promising in the applications of photodynamic therapy. The histological analyses demonstrate that C-60-CD has no acute or subacute toxicity to living body.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)-catalyzed radical heteroannulation reaction of [60]fullerene (C60) with α-bromo acetamides has been disclosed for the direct synthesis of diverse C60-fused lactams. Furthermore, the formed C60-fused lactams can be served as a versatile platform for further electrochemical functionalization to prepare 1,2-, 1,4-, 1,2,3,16-, and 1,4,9,25-adducts of C60. In addition, a representative fullerene product has been applied as an overcoating layer of the electron-transporting layer in n-type perovskite solar cell.

Abstract:The reaction of C(60) with propionaldehyde (butyraldehyde or phenylacetaldehyde) and MeONa-MeOH or EtONa-EtOH in anhydrous chlorobenzene in the presence of air at room temperature unexpectedly gave rare fullerene acetals 2aa-cb, while the reaction of C(60) with acetone (acetophenone, cyclohexanone, or cyclopentanone) and MeONa-MeOH or EtONa-EtOH under the same conditions afforded the uncommon fullerene ketals 4aa-db. A possible reaction mechanism for the formation of the fullerene acetals and ketals is proposed based on further experimental results.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS]Treatment of C-70 with cycloalkylaminomethylenebisphosphonates in the presence of NaH gave corresponding C-70 dimers 1 in good yield, while the methanofullerenes, C-70 > CH(PO3Et2) (3) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (4) or C-60 > CH(PO3Et2) (5) and C-60 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (6), were obtained, respectively, by the reaction of C-70 of C-60 with tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate in the presence of NaH. Diethyl cyanornethylphosphonate reacted with C-60 of C-70 under similar conditions to afford C-60 > C(PO3Et2)CN (7) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)CN (8). Furthermore, the presence of weak electronic interactions between two fullerene cages of fullerene dimers was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. A radical mechanism was proposed for the formation of the fullerene derivatives on the basis of the ESR studies.

Abstract:Four novel cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) derivatives with three benzoate pendants bearing different aliphatic chains have been prepared in good yields, starting from CTV. The complexation behavior of these CTV derivatives towards C-60 in arene solvents has been measured by UV-visible spectroscopy and high complexation constants are obtained. It is observed that the complexation is promoted pronouncedly by introducing methyl ester groups to the aromatic pendants, while this promoting effect is reduced when the methyl groups are replaced by longer alkyl groups.
