Abstract:Photolysis of aminopolycarboxylates with C 60 has been shown to be an effective method for the preparation of isomerically pure fullerene derivatives.A series of fullerroaminopolycar boxylate derivatives have been prepared by this method.For example,glycine esters react with C 60 to give C 60 (ROOCCHNHCHCOOR),the mechanism of which is proposed to involve complicated bond breaking and formation processes.Aminoacid esters with secondary and tertiary amino groups can add to C 60 by simply losing two H atoms.Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate(EDTA) with C 60 yields the EDTA containing fullerene monoadduct C 60 (MeOOCCH) 2NCH 2CH 2N(CH 2COOMe) 2.Compared to well known 1,3 dipole addition method of fulleropyrrolidine preparation,the photoreaction reported here avoids the use of aldehydes or ketones and is specially suited for the preparation of the fullerene containing complexones such as the EDTA C 60 derivative.Langmuir Blodgett film formation and the photoelectric properties of these fulleropyrrolidine ccompounds are investigated.Due to the presence of hydrophilic groups the derivatives form stable and transferable monolayer.By using metal ion sonlution as the subphase,metal complexes of the fullerocarboxylic derivatives are prepared at the air/water interface.Photoelctrical behavior of the LB film fabricated on ITO are studied under various conditions.For most of the compounds electrons flow from the electrolyte through the LB film to the ITO.The quantum yield of the fullerene derivatives can reach 8%.

Abstract:A new C60-polyoxometalate compound was synthesized by a C60 derivative with a {SiW11Mn} cluster connecting through a coordination bond and characterized. The photocurrent response test showed great improvement of this new compound compared to C60 and the polyoxometalate precursor, which could be used as a potential photoelectric material.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:The photocycloaddition of tertiary amines to [60]fullerene (C-60) is an interesting and useful reaction. We wished to extend the applications of this type of reaction through an investigation of the photoaddition of alkaloids to C-60 for the purpose of synthesizing novel and complex photoadducts that are difficult to obtain by usual methods. Irradiation of tazettine (2) or gramine (3) with Cao in toluene leads to formation of one monoadduct (6 or 7), whereas scandine (1a) or 10-hydroxyscandine (Ib) reacts with C-60 photochemically to give two products, the expected [6,6] monoadduct (5a, 5b) and a new type of monoadduct with a bis-[6, 6] closed structure (4a, 4b). These new structures were characterized by W-vis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY, ROESY, HMQC (heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence), and HMBC (heteronuclear multiple-bond connectivity) spectroscopy. The techniques of time-of-flight secondary ion MS (TOF-SIMS) and field desorption MS (FD-MS) were used for the mass determination. He-3 NMR analysis of the product mixture from photoaddition of la to C-60 containing a He-3 atom (He-3@C-60) led to two peaks at -9.091 and -11.090 ppm relative to gaseous He-3, consistent with formation of a [6,6]-closed monoadduct and a bis-[6,6] closed adduct. Presumably, the bis-[6, 6] closed adducts are formed by an intramolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the vinyl group to the adjacent 6,6-ring junction of C-60 after the initial photocycloaddition.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the acetyl cation CH3-C-+=O (m/z 43) and formylmethyl cation (CH2)-C-+-CH=O (m/z 43, or oxiranyl cation), generated from the self-chemical ionization of acetone and vinyl acetate, respectively, were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Adduct cations [C60C2H3O](+) (m/z 763) and protonated C-60, [C60H](+) (m/z 721), were observed as the major products. AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations on the possible structures, stabilities and charge locations of the isomers of the adducts [C60C2H3O](+) were carried out at the restricted Hartree-Fock level. The results indicated that the sigma-addition product [C-60-COCH3](+) is the most stable adduct for the reaction of C-60 with CH3-C-+=O rather than that resulting from the [2+2] cycloaddition. The [2+3] cycloadduct and the sigma-adduct [C60CH2CHO](+) might be the most possible coexisting products for the reactions of C-60 with (CH2)-C-+-CH=O or oxiranyl cation. Abstract:Secondary amines are well-known to add to [60]fullerene to form the tetraamino epoxy adduct C60(O)(NR1R2)4 under both photolysis and thermal conditions in the presence of oxygen. We have now found that pentaamino hydroxyl adduct C60(OH)(NR1R2)5 and hexaamino adduct C60(NR1R2)6 can be formed as the major products in the dark in the presence of oxygen. Key steps of the reaction mechanism probably involve repeated oxygen oxidation of the radical ion pair between fullerene and amines.

Abstract:1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of DTE-azomethine ylides (DTE: dithienyl-ethene) to C60 in refluxed toluene was used to synthesize novel dumbbell-type fullerene dimer 1. For the sake of comparison, the monoadduct 2 were also synthesized. The molecular geometries of these two compounds were determined by theoretical calculations with HF-3/21G method. UV-Vis and fluorescence experiments were carried out in solvents with different polarity at the room temperature. All the results indicated the existence of a photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer process between the donor and acceptor moieties.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Knowledge about factors that govern chemoselectivity is pivotal to the design of reactions that are utilized to produce complex organic substances. In the current study, single-electron transfer (SET)-promoted photoaddition reactions of fullerene C60 with both trimethylsilyl and various alkyl group-containing glycinates and ethyl N-alkyl-N-((trimethylsilyl)methyl)glycinates were explored to evaluate how the nature of N-alkyl substituents of glycinate substrates and reaction conditions govern the chemoselectivity of reaction pathways followed. The results showed that photoreactions of C60 with glycinates, performed in deoxygenated conditions, produced aminomethyl-1,2-dihydrofullerenes efficiently through a pathway involving the addition of α-amino radical intermediates that are generated by sequential SET-solvent-assisted desilylation of glycinate substrates to C60. Under oxygenated conditions, photoreactions of glycinate substrates, except N-benzyl-substituted analogues, did not take place efficiently owing to quenching of 3C60* by oxygen. Interestingly, N-benzyl-substituted glycinates did react under these conditions to form fulleropyrrolidines through a pathway involving 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of in situ formed azomethine ylides to C60. The ylide intermediates were formed by regioselective H-atom transfer from glycinates by singlet oxygen. Furthermore, methylene blue (MB)-photosensitized reactions of C60 with glycinates under oxygenated conditions took place efficiently to produce fulleropyrrolidines independent of the nature of N-alkyl substituents of glycinates.

Abstract:The reaction of [60]fullerene with dimethyl malonate and diethyl malonate in the presence of manganese(III) acetate dihydrate (Mn(OAc)(3) . 2H(2)O) for 20 min afforded singly bonded [60]fullerene dimers 1a and 1b in a 1,4-addition pattern. When the reaction time was extended to 1 h, 1,4-bisadducts 2a and 2b were obtained. Unsymmetrical 1,4-adduct 5 and C-2 symmetrical 1,16-bisadduct 6 were obtained when diethyl bromomalonate was used as the active methylene compound. Reaction of [60]fullerene with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate with the aid of Mn(OAc)(3).2H(2)O produced methanofullerenes 7 and 8. It is proposed that all these products were formed via the addition of free radicals from the active methylene compounds generated by Mn(OAc)(3).2H(2)O.

Abstract:The reaction of aminoketal[60]fullerene peroxide with pyrrolidine removes all the peroxo groups giving the aminooxahomo[60]fullerene derivatives with five amino addends together with one hydroxyl, one epoxy and three ether moieties. The structure has been determined by spectroscopic data and single crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical-ionization of alkyl methyl ethers(CH3OCnH2n+1, n =2 , 3, 4) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major products, The former was produced by the reactions.of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O = CH2](+) , the latter corresponded to the proton transfer reactions from the protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers with special chemical properties, Our investigation provides the guidance for the synthesis of this compound in condensed phase.

Abstract:Photolysis of C-60 with piperidinoacetic acid and morpholinoacetic acid results in the decarboxylation of the acids and formation of the 1,2-dihydrofullerenes C-60(H)[CH2N(CH2)(5)] 1, C-60(H)[CH2N(CH2CH2)(2)O] 2 Under the same conditions the reactions with the methyl esters of the two cyclic amino acids give the fullerropyrrolidine derivatives C-60[(C) under bar H(CH2)(4)N (C) under bar HCOOCH3] 3, and C-60[(C) under bar H(CH2OCH2CH2)N (C) under bar HCOOCH3] 4.

Abstract:C-60 reacts with L-alanine and substituted iminodiacetic esters to form fulleropyrrolidines. The mechanism for the L-alanine ester reaction involves both C-N bond breaking and formation processes, whereas for the iminodiacetic derivatives there appears simply the loss of two hydrogen atoms. The products are characterized by their spectroscopic data. In addition the 1,3-dipole addition reaction between C-60 and L-alanine and acetaldehyde was used to verify the identity of the product.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxide C(60) (OH)(Cl)(OOtBu) reacts with PhMe(2)SiH/B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give oxahomofullerene. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the hydroxyl group in the central pentagon ring is essential to convert the tert-butylperoxo group into a ketal moiety. Migration of the silyl group and transformation of the siloxy group into a phenyl group are observed in the deprotection of the fullerene bound siloxy group. A 12-membered open-cage fullerendione was obtained through oxidation of a [6,6]-fullerendiol. This orifice could be closed to form ketal/hemiketal moieties by BF(3)-catalyzed reaction with methanol. All of the new fullerene derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic data, and structure of the open-cage fullerendione was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:Ammonia and aliphatic amines react readily in the oxygen-rich regions of the Cs symmetric fullerene peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 (1) and C60(OH)(Br)(OOtBu)4 (2 c). Michael addition-type hydroamination of the 1,4-diene moiety on the central skew-pentagon was observed when 1 was treated with ammonia or with nonbulky primary amines, while sterically demanding primary amines opened the epoxy moiety to form vicinal aminohydroxy fullerene compounds with the amino group on the central pentagon. In 2 c the bromo group was replaced under similar conditions by ammonia and primary amines. Cyclic secondary amines showed different reaction patterns, forming hydrogenation products or aminoketal-fullerenes when treated with 1 and 2 c, respectively. Single-electron transfer (SET) is the key step in all the proposed mechanisms. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data, and in addition, three single-crystal X-ray structures were obtained.
