Abstract:The reaction of C60 with ozone in benzen results in the formation of C60 oxides. Two isomers of C60O were formed at 10��C, isolated and the UV-vis spectra of both isomers were obtained. The UV-vis spectrum of C60O(I) is same as C60O (C2v) and that of C60O(II) is in similar to theoretical one of C60O (Cs).

Abstract:A new C60-polyoxometalate compound was synthesized by a C60 derivative with a {SiW11Mn} cluster connecting through a coordination bond and characterized. The photocurrent response test showed great improvement of this new compound compared to C60 and the polyoxometalate precursor, which could be used as a potential photoelectric material.

Abstract:The structures and UV spectra of both of the isomers for the additive products HC60 [CH2C��(CH3)=CH2] resulted from C60 and CH2 = C(CH3)CH2 MgCl have been investigated by the series of INDO methods. It is illustrated that the 1,2-additive product is of C5 symmetry and 1,4-additive product is of C1 symmetry, furthermore the total energy of the 1,2-isomer is lower than that of the 1,4-isomer thus the former is easier to obtain. The bond between CH2=(CH3)CH2 and C60 in the product belongs to the polar covalent bond and the electronic transmission from the former to the latter has happened. Based on the optimised geometry, the UV spectra of both of the isomers have been calculated and are in agreement with the experimental results. Meanwhile the theoretical assignment for the electronic transition has been performed and the red shift of the UV peaks has been rationalized.

Abstract:Hexachloro[60]fullerene, C60Cl6, was reacted with a mixture of ROH/H2O (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, (CH2)(2)C CH) to form both C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) and C60Cl(OR)(5). Only the C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) were isolated with bulky alcohols, ROH (R = (CH2)(3)C CH, (CH2)(4)C CH). Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides, C-60(O)(OR)(4), were prepared by treating C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) with CuI. The epoxy moiety could be hydrolyzed to the vicinal diol derivatives, C-60(OH)(2)(OR)(4), and then oxidized to form dicarbonyl open-cage fullerenes, C60O2(OR)(4). CuI was found to convert the terminal alkynyl addends into iodoalkynyl addends on the C-60 cage.

Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:A reinvestigation of the reaction between C-60(2-) and benzyl bromide in benzonitrile containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) has shown that there are more reaction products than previously reported. Use of a silica rather than a "Buckyclutcher I" column for HPLC purification led to isolation of two previously unattained products in the reaction mixture, one of which was identified as 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 by UV-vis and NMR. The earlier incorrectly assigned 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 was identified as the methanofullerene C61HPh by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The electrochemistry of genuine 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 shows that its first reduction potential in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP is cathodically shifted by 100 mV with respect to E-1/2 for reduction of 1,4-(PhCH2)(2)C-60, indicating that the addition pattern significantly affects the electrochemistry of derivatized C-60. Visible and near-IR spectra of the monoanion and dianion of 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 are also reported.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:Diels-Alder cycloaddition of C60 with 1,1′-biindene under controlled conditions affords a stable monoadduct C60 (C9H7-C9H7) of novel structure, which was confirmed by HPLC, FT-IR, FD-MS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HMQC and HMBC spectra. Its two bridgehead cage carbons resonate at 70.91. The 13C NMR spectra show 38 lines consistent with the Cs symmetry associated with [6,6] addition. In addition, the high solubility of this adduct in polar solvents such as THF, acetone makes it suitable to a good application in the investigation of LB film and optical limiting properties.

Abstract:A new 4-methoxyphenyl substituted C-60-pyrrolidine derivative, C-60(C10H13NO) (1), was prepared and its room-temperature fluorescence was studied. Its fluorescence intensity is three times stronger than that of C-60. Its singlet energy was estimated to be 25 kJ/mol lower than that of C-60. The fluorescence lifetime was determined to be 2.1+/-0.3 ns by using the frequency domain method. The fluorescence quenching by concentration and aromatic electron donor: N, N-dimethylaniline (DMA) was investigated. Data show that its fluorescence could not be quenched by DMA.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical-ionization of alkyl methyl ethers(CH3OCnH2n+1, n =2 , 3, 4) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major products, The former was produced by the reactions.of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O = CH2](+) , the latter corresponded to the proton transfer reactions from the protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers with special chemical properties, Our investigation provides the guidance for the synthesis of this compound in condensed phase.

Abstract:Two oxidation products of the reaction of C-60 with O-3 in toluene or dichlorobenzene were obtained in dependence on the amount of ozone absorbed by the solution and the reaction time. The short time oxidized product is insoluble in common organic solvents and water, but the water-soluble derivatives were obtained after hydrolysis under a basic condition, It's IR spectrum is similar with that of C-60 polyhydric derivatives. The extensive oxidation product of C-60 is water-soluble without any further dispose. The structures of the two oxidized products were characterized by variable-temperature FTIR, XPS, elementary analysis, TGA and TOF-MS, ESI-MS, FAB-MS technique. Both products are thermally unstable, H2O, CO and CO2 are eliminated during the increase of temperature.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the acetyl cation CH3-C-+=O (m/z 43) and formylmethyl cation (CH2)-C-+-CH=O (m/z 43, or oxiranyl cation), generated from the self-chemical ionization of acetone and vinyl acetate, respectively, were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Adduct cations [C60C2H3O](+) (m/z 763) and protonated C-60, [C60H](+) (m/z 721), were observed as the major products. AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations on the possible structures, stabilities and charge locations of the isomers of the adducts [C60C2H3O](+) were carried out at the restricted Hartree-Fock level. The results indicated that the sigma-addition product [C-60-COCH3](+) is the most stable adduct for the reaction of C-60 with CH3-C-+=O rather than that resulting from the [2+2] cycloaddition. The [2+3] cycloadduct and the sigma-adduct [C60CH2CHO](+) might be the most possible coexisting products for the reactions of C-60 with (CH2)-C-+-CH=O or oxiranyl cation. Abstract:A new 4-acetalphenyl-substituted C-60-pyrrolidine derivative, C-60(C12H17NO2) (1), has been prepared and its Langmuir films, with and without 22-tricosenoic acid [CH2=CH-(CH2)(20)CO2H(TA)], at the air/water interface have been investigated. Pure 1 forms monolayers more easily than the parent molecule, C-60, and can be transferred onto solid substrates to form Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The mixed Langmuir films of 1 and TA were transferred onto hydrophilically pretreated quartz, glass substrates and silicon wafers. Reflectometric measurement of a 63-layer 1:2 mixed film on a silicon wafer using an He-Ne laser (lambda = 632.8 nm) provided a film thickness and refractive index of 171 nm and 1.73, respectively. Weak second harmonic generation (SHG) from LB monolayers of pure 1 and 1:2 and 1:4 mixed LB monolayer films of 1 and TA was observed. The second-order susceptibilities, chi(pp)((2)), Were evaluated to be in the range (4-6) x 10(-9) esu.

Abstract:1,6-Methano[60]fullerene-61,61-dicarboxylic acid was studied by electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The deprotonated molecule, C60C(COOH)COO−, and the decarboxylated molecular anion C60CHCOO− were observed. Gas-phase ion–molecule reactions occurred when the ion accumulation time in an external rf/dc hexapole ion trap was extended. Cluster ions of the type [C60CHCOOH] n[C60CHCOO]− ( n = 1–2) were observed. Multiply-charged anions were observed for the dimer [C60CHCOOH][C60CHCOO]−. Collision-induced dissociation in the ion cyclotron resonance cell showed that C60C(COOH)COO− dissociated through the loss of two CO2 groups, with further fragmentation to produce C60−. A similar fragmentation pathway was also observed with capillary/skimmer collision-induced dissociation during the electrospray process. Semi-empirical calculations using the AM1 approximation with the MOPAC program have been performed on most of the neutral and ionic species related to this compound. Energy differences and charge distributions have been obtained for the possible geometry structures for these species.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:Through an efficient octa-substitution reaction, octabromofullerene (C60Br8) was reacted with alcohols or anisole in the presence of silver triflate to produce octaalkoxy and octaaryl fullerenes, respectively, in up to 79% yield with retention of C2v-symmetry. The LUMO level could be widely tuned through the cumulative substituent effects of the eight addends. The difference in LUMO energy level between C60(OCH2CCl3)8 and C60(C6H4-OMe-4)8 was 0.53 eV, representing low-LUMO and high-LUMO fullerenes. Dynamic light scattering measurements revealed that these octa-substituted compounds were dispersed as single molecules both in toluene and in dichloromethane under low-concentration condition. This lack of aggregate formation is attributed to the polar and non-polar hemispheres of these molecules.
