Abstract:A general synthesis of 4-hydroxylcarbazoles by domino vinylogous conjugate addition/cyclization/elimination/aromatization of easily prepared 3-nitroindoles with alkylidene azlactones under mild and transition-metal-free conditions has been developed. This method was also applicable to other nitrosubstituted benzofused heterocycles such as 3-nitrobenzothiophene, 2-nitrobenzothiophene, and 2-nitrobenzofuran. The valuable tetracyclic carbazole derivatives, such as 6H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazole and 3,6-dihydro-2H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazol-2-one, were readily prepared from the product, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient Cu(OAc)2-mediated N-heteroannulation reaction of [60]fullerene with N-sulfonylated o-amino-aromatic methyl ketones or O-alkyl oximes has been reported for the synthesis of novel and scarce [60]fullerene-fused tetrahydroazepinones and -azepinonimines in a highly selective manner. Abstract:A novel FeCl2·4H2O-mediated internal-oxidant relay cascade reaction has been developed by functionalization of O-substituted benzohydroxamic acids or N-chloro-arylamides with [60]fullerene. Depending on the nature of the N-substituted groups, fullerenooxazoles or rare hydroxyfullerenyl amides could be obtained in a straightforward and flexible manner. Such a new transformation provides a unique strategy for the synthesis of fullerenooxazoles or hydroxyfullerenyl amides.

Abstract:The first example of metal-free-catalyzed multicomponent annulation reaction of [60]fullerene has been developed for concise and efficient construction of novel [60]fullerene-fused 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Using inexpensive and readily available I<sub>2</sub> as a catalyst, [60]fullerene, ketones, and indoles undergo a formal [2+2+2] annulation process to conveniently assemble diverse 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction proceeds through I<sub>2</sub>-promoted generation of a 3-vinylindole structure with the characteristics of a conjugated diene followed by cycloaddition to [60]fullerene.

Abstract:A series of tetrafluorophenyl-modified oligo(3,6-carbazole ethynylene)s (CfCzCf, CfCz2Cf, CfCz3Cf, (CfCz)2Cf, and Cf2CzCf2) were synthesized by a Pd/Cu-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction and fully characterized. Their photophysical and electronic properties as well as their thermal stabilities were investigated. It is noteworthy that these tetrafluorophenyl modified compounds showed relative thermal stabilities and low-lying HOMO levels ranging from −5.54 to −5.60eV, which might be the promising candidates for hole-transporting materials in OLEDs.

Abstract:An unexpected, divergent and efficient approach toward furanoid-bridged fullerene dimers C120O and C120O2 was established under different solvent-free ball-milling conditions by simply using pristine C60 as the starting material, water as the oxygen source and FeCl3 as the mediator. The structures of C120O and C120O2 were unambiguously established by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A plausible reaction mechanism is proposed on the basis of control experiments. Furthermore, C120O2 has been applied in organic solar cells as the third component and exhibits good performance.

Abstract:Three C-60-carbazole adducts have been synthesized by 1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. Intramolecular energy/electron transfer from carbazole to C-60 was observed by steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence spectra of these adducts were similar to each other and dependent on the excitation wavelength and solvent.

Abstract:Acenes/heteroacenes, the most widely studied small-molecule organic semiconductors, always possess linear structures. In this work, three stable, soluble and angular pi-extended hepta-thienoacenes with an internal carbazole, that is, thienobenzo-fused carbazole (DTBCz) were synthesized via a four-step tandem method. The tandem synthesis starting from carbazole derivatives led to interesting isomeric effects. The synthetic regioselectivity was discussed in detail. Their physical properties and electron density distributions were studied by UV/Vis absorption, photoluminescence, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements, and theoretical calculations. Their potentials as semiconducting materials were evaluated by fabricating the solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The more angular shaped isomer of DTB[32,34]Cz displayed the best performance with hole mobility up to 0.0044 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in devices with a thickness of ca. 115 nm. Particularly, the performance of DTB[32,34]Cz-based devices showed less dependence on the thickness of their active layer.

Abstract:Several analogous C-58 open-cage fullerene derivatives have been prepared through silver acetate mediated decarboxylation of the corresponding C-59 open-cage precursors. These C-58 open-cage fullerene derivatives can trap one water molecule under mild conditions as shown by spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:By using carbon disulfide,N,N-dimethylformamide as raw material,tributylphosphite as coupling agent, 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(2′-cyanoethylthio)tetrathiafulvalene tetrathiolate(TTFTT) was synthesized.Using TTFTT as bridging ligand,o-phenanthroline as capping compound,tetrathiafulvalene tetrathiolate bimetal complexes were synthesized.The products including some intermediates were characterized by IR and elemental analysis.Experimental data of target product tallied with calculated values,indicating that this route of synthesis was reasonable and feasible.

Abstract:The syntheses and conformational structures of various functionalized tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines were studied. Applying the fragment coupling approach and the post-macrocyclization chemical manipulations, a number of tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines that contain, on the lower rim, one or two aldehyde, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxymethyl, and aminomethyl functional groups were prepared in moderate to high chemical yields from cheap and commercially available materials. On the basis of X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, all tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines containing electron-withdrawing group(s) adopted 1,3-alternate conformation both in solution and in the solid state, while tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines bearing hydroxymethyl and aminomethyl substituent(s) existed as pinched or distorted partial cone conformers due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bond between hydroxyl or amino group and triazine ring. Abstract:A kind of cyclen derivatives having fluorescence properties was designed and synthesized.The titled compound was obtained by reacting 2,3-difluorophenylacetic acid used as the starting material with methanol to yield methyl 2,3-difluoro-phenyl-acetate,followed by reduction in the presence of lithium aluminum hydride to obtain 2-(2,3-difluoro-phenyl)-ethanol,which further reacted with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride to yield the acid ester compound,and this compound then reacted upon cyclen to give 1,4,7,10-tetrakis-[2-(2,3-difluoro-phenyl)-ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane.All related compounds were fully characterized by 1HNMR and IR spectroscopic analyses.

Abstract:A photoinduced direct oxidative annulation of 1-ary1-2(furan/thiophen-2-yObutane-1,3-diones and ethy1-2-(furan-2-y1)-3-oxo-3(ary1-2-yl)propanoates in EtOH without the need for any transition metals and oxidants provided access to highly functionalized polyheterocyclic 1(5-hydroxynaphtho [2,1-b.] furan-4-y1) ethano ne s and 1- (5-hydroxyfuran/thieno/pyrrolo [3,2-e]benzofuran-4-yl)ethanones. The phenomenon of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was observed for both 1-(S-hydroxynaphtho[2,1-b]furan-4-yl)ethanone and 1-(5-hydroxy furan/thieno/pyrrolo [3,2-db enzofuran-4-y1) ethanone analogues.

Abstract:Two new unsymmetrical tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives, 2,3-bis(cyanoethylthio)-6,7-(methylethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (6a) and 2,3-bis(cyanoethylthio)-6,7-(cyclopentodithio)tetrathiafulvalene (6b), have been prepared and characterized by NMR, NIS, IR and Elemental analyses. The molecular structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Their redox properties have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry in dichloromethane solution and each compound shows two reversible single-electron redox couples.
