Abstract:[GRAPHICS]Novel reactions of C-60 with amino acid ester hydrochlorides and CS2 in the presence of Et3N affording fullerene derivatives 2 and 3 containing biologically active amino acids, thioamide, and thiourea units have been investigated. The thioamide groups in compounds 2 are sensitive to moisture and can easily be hydrolyzed to amide groups.

Abstract:Ammonia and aliphatic amines react readily in the oxygen-rich regions of the Cs symmetric fullerene peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 (1) and C60(OH)(Br)(OOtBu)4 (2 c). Michael addition-type hydroamination of the 1,4-diene moiety on the central skew-pentagon was observed when 1 was treated with ammonia or with nonbulky primary amines, while sterically demanding primary amines opened the epoxy moiety to form vicinal aminohydroxy fullerene compounds with the amino group on the central pentagon. In 2 c the bromo group was replaced under similar conditions by ammonia and primary amines. Cyclic secondary amines showed different reaction patterns, forming hydrogenation products or aminoketal-fullerenes when treated with 1 and 2 c, respectively. Single-electron transfer (SET) is the key step in all the proposed mechanisms. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data, and in addition, three single-crystal X-ray structures were obtained.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:The solvent-free mechanochemical reaction and the liquid-phase reaction of C60 with ethyl 2-diazopropionate prepared in situ or preformed from alanine ethyl ester hydrochloride and sodium nitrite have been investigated. Methanofullerene 1 and fulleroids 2 and 3 from these reactions were obtained, meanwhile the pyrazoline intermediate was not observed. Fulleroids 2 and 3 can be converted to methanofullerene 1 in refluxing toluene.

Abstract:Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides C-60(O)Ar-n(NR2)(4-n), n = 1, 2, have been prepared by treating 1,4-adducts C-60(OH)Ph and C-60(Tol)(2) with cyclic secondary amines. The epoxy moieties in these mixed tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides were hydrolyzed into the corresponding diol derivatives, which were further oxidized into diketone open-cage fullerenes with a 10-membered orifice. A few other reactions also showed that the present tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides with both amino and aryl addends exhibit improved chemical reactivity over the tetraamino[60]fullerene epoxide without any aryl group.

Abstract:The reaction between glycine methyl ester and C60 can be effectively controlled by different iodo-reagents. Addition of DIB ((diacetoxyiodo)benzene) yields the 2,5-bismethoxycarbonyl pyrrolidino[60]fullerene under ultrasonic irradiation; whereas addition of DIB-iodine results in the N-methoxycarbonylmethyl aziridino[60]fullerene under ultrasonic irradiation. The reaction of sarcosine methyl ester with C60 is similar to that of glycine methyl ester under these two conditions. Addition of just iodine to a mixture of sarcosine methyl ester and C60 affords the tetra(amino)[60]fullerene epoxide C60(O)((Me)NCH2COOMe)4. Possible mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:The reaction of buckministerfullerene(C60) with tri-n-butyltin hydride (n-Bu3SnH) in toluene solution has been investigated. According to mass spectrometry analysis, the products of above reaction are C60(BuH)n(n = 1-3) and BuxSnyHz(x = 3-8, y = 1-4, z = 03). The reaction maybe provide a new method for the synthesis of alkylated fullerene derivatives. Where C60 also takes a role of a catalysis of organtic-tin polymerization. The radical reaction mechanism has been discussed.

Abstract:Secondary amines are well-known to add to [60]fullerene to form the tetraamino epoxy adduct C60(O)(NR1R2)4 under both photolysis and thermal conditions in the presence of oxygen. We have now found that pentaamino hydroxyl adduct C60(OH)(NR1R2)5 and hexaamino adduct C60(NR1R2)6 can be formed as the major products in the dark in the presence of oxygen. Key steps of the reaction mechanism probably involve repeated oxygen oxidation of the radical ion pair between fullerene and amines.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the acetyl cation CH3-C-+=O (m/z 43) and formylmethyl cation (CH2)-C-+-CH=O (m/z 43, or oxiranyl cation), generated from the self-chemical ionization of acetone and vinyl acetate, respectively, were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Adduct cations [C60C2H3O](+) (m/z 763) and protonated C-60, [C60H](+) (m/z 721), were observed as the major products. AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations on the possible structures, stabilities and charge locations of the isomers of the adducts [C60C2H3O](+) were carried out at the restricted Hartree-Fock level. The results indicated that the sigma-addition product [C-60-COCH3](+) is the most stable adduct for the reaction of C-60 with CH3-C-+=O rather than that resulting from the [2+2] cycloaddition. The [2+3] cycloadduct and the sigma-adduct [C60CH2CHO](+) might be the most possible coexisting products for the reactions of C-60 with (CH2)-C-+-CH=O or oxiranyl cation. Other [C60C2H3O](+) isomers are also discussed. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:In chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) gas phase C-60(+) or C-60 can react with fragment ions from three chloromethane and four multichloroethane molecular ions via ion-molecule reactions. A dozen of gas-phase adduct ions of C-60 are observed, and most of them contain chlorine atoms. The results of the comparison and analysis show that the relative intensities of adductions are not directly proportional to the corresponding fragment ions in the MS of reagents,which implies that some fragment ions containing radicals are more reactive with C-60(+) or C-60. This indicates that the alkene-like C-60(+) or C-60 can act as a radical sponge in addition reactions.

Abstract:The reaction of N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) with C-60 and exploration of the product as a precursor for various 1,2- and 1,4-bisfullerene adducts are reported. NFSI is also found to act as an oxidant in the reaction of C-60 with cyclic amines such as pyrrolidine yielding tetraaminoaziridino adducts.

Abstract:Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical-ionization of alkyl methyl ethers(CH3OCnH2n+1, n =2 , 3, 4) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major products, The former was produced by the reactions.of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O = CH2](+) , the latter corresponded to the proton transfer reactions from the protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers with special chemical properties, Our investigation provides the guidance for the synthesis of this compound in condensed phase.

Abstract:Unlike the facile addition of aliphatic amines to fullerenes, heteroaromatic compounds with NH group do not react directly with pristine fullerenes. The present work reports the preparation of several cyclopentadienyl type [60]fullerene derivatives with pyrazole and pyrrole addends through replacement reactions of C60Cl6 in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide. The method has also been applied for the synthesis of aniline and methoxyamine [60]fullerene cyclopentadienyl type adducts. Radical species were involved in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:A reinvestigation of the reaction between C-60(2-) and benzyl bromide in benzonitrile containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) has shown that there are more reaction products than previously reported. Use of a silica rather than a "Buckyclutcher I" column for HPLC purification led to isolation of two previously unattained products in the reaction mixture, one of which was identified as 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 by UV-vis and NMR. The earlier incorrectly assigned 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 was identified as the methanofullerene C61HPh by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The electrochemistry of genuine 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 shows that its first reduction potential in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP is cathodically shifted by 100 mV with respect to E-1/2 for reduction of 1,4-(PhCH2)(2)C-60, indicating that the addition pattern significantly affects the electrochemistry of derivatized C-60. Visible and near-IR spectra of the monoanion and dianion of 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 are also reported.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient Cu(OAc)2-mediated N-heteroannulation reaction of [60]fullerene with N-sulfonylated o-amino-aromatic methyl ketones or O-alkyl oximes has been reported for the synthesis of novel and scarce [60]fullerene-fused tetrahydroazepinones and -azepinonimines in a highly selective manner. Moreover, a possible mechanism involving two pathways is proposed on the basis of the experimental observations.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS]Treatment of C-70 with cycloalkylaminomethylenebisphosphonates in the presence of NaH gave corresponding C-70 dimers 1 in good yield, while the methanofullerenes, C-70 > CH(PO3Et2) (3) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (4) or C-60 > CH(PO3Et2) (5) and C-60 > C(PO3Et2)(2) (6), were obtained, respectively, by the reaction of C-70 of C-60 with tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate in the presence of NaH. Diethyl cyanornethylphosphonate reacted with C-60 of C-70 under similar conditions to afford C-60 > C(PO3Et2)CN (7) and C-70 > C(PO3Et2)CN (8). Furthermore, the presence of weak electronic interactions between two fullerene cages of fullerene dimers was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. A radical mechanism was proposed for the formation of the fullerene derivatives on the basis of the ESR studies.
