Abstract:C-60 derivatives covalently linked with the nitroxide radical of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl have been synthesized by the following new method: C-60 reacts with 4-oxo-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-piperidinyloxyl (4-oxo-TEMPO) and an amino acid.

Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:The unique reactivity and synthetic applications of oxime acetate derivatives with N, O and S substituents at the α‐position are disclosed for the first time, which leads to 2‐substituted fulleropyrrolidines and mono‐ and disubstituted 1‐fulleropyrrolines via copper‐catalyzed redox‐neutral N‐heteroannulation reactions with C60. This transformation is operationally simple and has a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Theoretical calculations at the level of B3LYP/6‐31G(d) were performed to elucidate the chemoselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:In this work, the incorporation of a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperydinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO) group to a benzoxazine ring is performed using a one-pot synthesis for the preparation of TEMPOfunctionalized benzoxazine compounds and polymers as reactive and crosslinkable initiators for nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). The TEMPO-functionalization reaction of benzoxazine, traced with H-1 NMR, is conducted with sequential radical transfer and coupling reactions. Moreover, polystyrene-grafted polybenzoxazine copolymers are prepared with the TEMPO-benzoxazine initiator and NMP of styrene. The polymerization system exhibits the characteristics of controlled radical polymerization, including controlled molecular weights of products and ability for sequential polymerization. Moreover, based on the chemical reactivity and crosslinking ability of benzoxazine groups, the synthesis route developed in this work will widen the scope of the design and synthesis of functional and high-performance polymers.

Abstract:Four isomers are currently known for the trioxygenated fullerene derivative C-60(O)(3), three regioisomers with all of the oxygen addends as epoxy groups and the unstable ozonide isomer with a 1,2,3-trioxlane ring. Here we report the synthesis of an open-cage isomer for C-60(O)(3) with a ketolactone moiety embedded into the fullerene skeleton through a three-step procedure mediated by fullerene peroxide chemistry. Two fullerene skeleton carbon-carbon bonds are cleaved in the process. The open-cage derivative C-60(O)(3) can be converted back to C-60 through deoxygenation with PPh3. Single crystal X-ray structure confirmed the open-cage structure.

Abstract:A catalytic, aerobic oxidative dearomatization protocol has been developed for the preparation of spiroisoxazline scaffolds from oximes using TEMPO and NaNO<sub>2</sub> as the catalyst and O<sub>2</sub> as the sole oxidant. Abstract:Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides C-60(O)Ar-n(NR2)(4-n), n = 1, 2, have been prepared by treating 1,4-adducts C-60(OH)Ph and C-60(Tol)(2) with cyclic secondary amines. The epoxy moieties in these mixed tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides were hydrolyzed into the corresponding diol derivatives, which were further oxidized into diketone open-cage fullerenes with a 10-membered orifice. A few other reactions also showed that the present tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides with both amino and aryl addends exhibit improved chemical reactivity over the tetraamino[60]fullerene epoxide without any aryl group.

Abstract:Unlike the facile addition of aliphatic amines to fullerenes, heteroaromatic compounds with NH group do not react directly with pristine fullerenes. The present work reports the preparation of several cyclopentadienyl type [60]fullerene derivatives with pyrazole and pyrrole addends through replacement reactions of C60Cl6 in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide. The method has also been applied for the synthesis of aniline and methoxyamine [60]fullerene cyclopentadienyl type adducts. Radical species were involved in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The carbonyl group on the rim of open-cage C 60 derivative was converted into an oxime group when treated with hydroxylamine. Nitrogen tetroxide could convert the oxime group into gem -dinitro groups, similar to the Ponzio reaction of classical organic compounds. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data shows that one of the nitro group is directly above the orifice acting as an effective stopper. Presence of the gem -dinitro groups also showed significant effect on the reactivity of other functional groups on the rim of the orifice.

Abstract:Hexachloro[60]fullerene, C60Cl6, was reacted with a mixture of ROH/H2O (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, (CH2)(2)C CH) to form both C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) and C60Cl(OR)(5). Only the C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) were isolated with bulky alcohols, ROH (R = (CH2)(3)C CH, (CH2)(4)C CH). Tetrahydro[60]fullerene epoxides, C-60(O)(OR)(4), were prepared by treating C60Cl(OH)(OR)(4) with CuI. The epoxy moiety could be hydrolyzed to the vicinal diol derivatives, C-60(OH)(2)(OR)(4), and then oxidized to form dicarbonyl open-cage fullerenes, C60O2(OR)(4). CuI was found to convert the terminal alkynyl addends into iodoalkynyl addends on the C-60 cage.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:Replacement of a pentagon in [60]fullerene with five oxygen atoms yields the open-cage compound C55O5 with five carbonyl groups on the rim of the orifice. Our attempts to synthesize such a target molecule starting from C60 have led us to prepare the fullerene-mixed peroxides such as C60(OO-t-Bu)6 with all the peroxo addends surrounding the same pentagon. Further investigations of the peroxide chemistry have generated various open-cage fullerene derivatives, including the carbon monoxide encapsulated endohedral compound CO@C59O6. This Personal Account mainly discusses peroxide-based processes resulting in selective cleavage of the fullerene skeleton bonds.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were grafted with polystyrene by in situ nitroxide mediated radical polymerization in the presence of TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl) functionalized MWCNT, which was synthesized by the reaction between 4-hydroxyl-TEMPO (HO–TEMPO) and carbonyl chloride groups on the MWCNT. Although the controllability of the polymerization was not high, highly soluble grafted MWCNTs were indeed obtained, indicating that the graft polymerization was efficient. The resulting polystyrene grafted MWCNTs were easily defunctionalized at room temperature using 3-chloroperoxybenzioc acid. TEM, SEM, and TGA were employed to determine the structure, morphology, and the grafting quantities of the resulting products.

Abstract:Polyfunctionalized arenes are privileged structural motifs in both academic and industrial chemistry. Conventional methods for accessing this class of chemicals usually involve stepwise modification of phenyl rings, often necessitating expensive noble metal catalysts and suffering from low reactivity and selectivity when introducing multiple functionalities. We herein report dehydrogenative synthesis of N -functionalized 2-aminophenols from cyclohexanones and amines. The developed reaction system enables incorporating amino and hydroxyl groups into aromatic rings in a one-shot fashion, which simplifies polyfunctionalized 2-aminophenol synthesis by circumventing issues associated with traditional arene modifications. The wide substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance are exemplified by late-stage modification of complex natural products and pharmaceuticals that are unattainable by existing methods. This dehydrogenative protocol benefits from using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) as oxidant that offers interesting chemo- and regio-selective oxidation processes. More notably, the essential role of in situ generated water is disclosed, which protects aliphatic amine moieties from overoxidation via hydrogen bond–enabled interaction.
