Abstract:The complex generated in situ between CuI and TPA(tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine)combined with TEMPO can be successfully applied to the aerobic oxidation of benzyl and allyl alcohols in acetonitrile,with more than 90%conversion and yield.Furthermore,the oxidation can be performed at room temperature and any base as additive is needless.

Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:A novel and efficient protocol for the oxidation of beta-isophorone (beta-IP) using molecular oxygen without any additives catalyzed by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) has been established. The generally accepted catalytic mechanism of alcohols by the oxoammonium cation (TEMPO+) derived from TEMPO indeed fails to explain our experimental observations, because a favorable radical-based process is confirmed by electron spin resonance measurements. Our results show that a plateau of the time-dependence curve is observed in the oxidation of beta-IP with TEMPO at low temperature, which is quite different from that of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The proposed mechanism of this catalytic process is also compared with that of NHPI. The theoretically characterized reaction pathways show that unlike the phthalimide N-oxyl radical, TEMPO promotes the oxidation via its interaction with the active intermediate hydroperoxide (ROOH) rather than its initial interaction with beta-IP, and byproduct water also assists the alpha-H atom transfer from ROOH to TEMPO. In addition to the intensive oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by TEMPO, the present study widens its specific applications in the active C-H bonds of hydrocarbons, and also provides new insights into its promoted metal-free oxidation.

Abstract:A novel, facile, and efficient method for the synthesis of tetrahydropyridazines by a one-pot tandem reaction of easily accessible ketohydrazones and olefins in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) has been successfully developed. The reaction involves the initial generation of azoalkenes from direct oxidative dehydrogenation of ketohydrazones using TEMPO as the commercially available oxidant, followed by a subsequent aza-Diels-Alder reaction with olefins.

Abstract:A light‐driven radical oxy‐functionalization of non‐acidic aliphatic and benzylic C(sp3)–H bonds was achieved with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) in a single‐step by employing an aryl ketone as a sole catalyst. The transformation was initiated by homolysis of a C(sp3)–H bond in starting substance by the photo‐excited aryl ketone. The derived carbon radical was then promptly trapped by TEMPO leading to the formation of the TEMPO‐adduct. The derived TEMPO‐adduct is synthetically versatile as an alcohol equivalent since it can be readily converted to the corresponding ketone by oxidation and to the corresponding alcohol by reduction. The key to realizing the present catalytic reaction relies on the distinctive triple role of TEMPO, which acts as the precursor of the oxygen functionality, the oxidant to regenerate the aryl ketone, and the protective group for the derived TEMPO‐adduct from over‐oxidation.

Abstract:A zirconium metal-organic framework (MOF), NU-1003, along with TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl), is constructed as a system of cooperative photocatalysis for blue light-powered aerobic sulfoxidation. The incorporation of 4 mol% of TEMPO enhances the hole transfer and thereby aerobic sulfoxidation by NU-1003 photocatalysis, demonstrating the pivotal role of a redox mediator in transforming an established MOF.

Abstract:The TEMPO‐catalyzed oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes has emerged to one of the most widely applied methodologies for such transformations. Advantages are the utilization of sodium hypochlorite, a component of household bleach, as oxidation agent and the use of water as a co‐solvent. However, a major drawback of this method is the often occurring strict limitation to use dichloromethane as organic solvent in a biphasic reaction medium with water. Previous studies show that dichloromethane cannot easily be substituted because a decrease of selectivity or an inhibition of the reaction is observed by use of alternative organic solvents. Thus, up to now only a few examples are known in which after a tedious optimization of the reaction dichloromethane could be replaced. In order to overcome the current limitations, we were interested in finding a TEMPO‐oxidation method in alternative organic solvents, which is applicable for various alcohol oxidations. As a result, we found a method for N‑oxyl radical‑catalyzed oxidation using sodium hypochlorite as oxidation agent in nitriles as organic solvent component instead of dichloromethane. Besides the oxidation of aromatic primary alcohols also aliphatic primary alcohols, secondary alcohols as well as dialcohols were successfully converted when using this method, showing high selectivity towards the carbonyl compound and low amounts of the acid side‐product.

Abstract:In ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6])-H2O, a highly chemoselective oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the presence of aliphatic ones to the corresponding hydroxyl benzyl aldehydes and ketones was allowed in high yields using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)/NaBr/IL-TEMPO (ionic liquid immobilized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpipericline-1-oxyl) as a facile and effective catalytic oxidation system. The medium, [bmim][PF6], together with the catalyst IL-TEMPO could be easily recycled for ten runs without any influence on the efficacy of the reaction in terms of yield and selectivity of the product.

Abstract:A variety of 4-substituted 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) derivatives has been screened for their ability in the oxidation of primary alcohols to the aldehydes with dioxygen under mild conditions. An evaluation of the efficiency of these 4-substituted TEMPO derivatives in the alcohol oxidation may allow an insight into the effect of the structural variations of TEMPO on the oxidation of alcohols, which should facilitate catalyst design and screening efforts. Based on the screening results of 4-substituted TEMPO derivatives, the catalyst comprised of 4-acetamido-TEMPO, iron chloride and sodium nitrite, has been developed for the highly efficient oxidation of a wide range of primary alcohols including primary aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes under mild conditions.

Abstract:Imidazolium salts bearing TEMPO groups react with commercially available copper powder affording Cu-NHC complexes. The in situ generated Cu-NHC-TEMPO complexes are quite efficient catalysts for aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols into aldehydes. The catalyst is easily available, and various primary alcohols were selectively converted to aldehydes in excellent yields.

Abstract:An entirely metal-free catalyst system consisting of an easily prepared recyclable new TEMPO derived sulfonic salt catalyst, and mineral acids (NaNO2 and HCl) has been developed for selective aerobic oxidation of structurally diverse benzylic sp(3) C-H bonds of ethers and alkylarenes.
