Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:In ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6])-H2O, a highly chemoselective oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the presence of aliphatic ones to the corresponding hydroxyl benzyl aldehydes and ketones was allowed in high yields using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)/NaBr/IL-TEMPO (ionic liquid immobilized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpipericline-1-oxyl) as a facile and effective catalytic oxidation system. The medium, [bmim][PF6], together with the catalyst IL-TEMPO could be easily recycled for ten runs without any influence on the efficacy of the reaction in terms of yield and selectivity of the product.

Abstract:To effectively recover redox catalyst and supporting electrolyte,a novel ternary composite consisting of ionic liquidsupported TEMPO,polymeric ionic-liquid and carbon black was prepared.The ionic-liquid supported redox catalyst TEMPO-IL-BF4 was firstly synthesized from 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl,and followed by the reaction of polydimethy ldiallylammonium chloride (PDDA) and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) to form poly[diallyldimethylammoniumbis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide] (PDDA(rf2N)).A combination of the above mentioned two synthesized materials and carbon black afforded to obtain the ternary composite,which was used as the recoverable supporting electrolyte and mediator for the electrochemical oxidation of alcohol.The results indicate that various alcohols could be oxidized efficiently to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with the more than 80％ yields in the presence of the ternary composite under electrochemical conditions.In addition,the composite could be recovered with 95％ recovery yield after being used for 4 times in experiments.The development of the ternary composite provides an efficient and sustainable approach for the recovery of supporting electrolyte and redox catalyst.

Abstract:The TEMPO‐catalyzed oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes has emerged to one of the most widely applied methodologies for such transformations. Advantages are the utilization of sodium hypochlorite, a component of household bleach, as oxidation agent and the use of water as a co‐solvent. However, a major drawback of this method is the often occurring strict limitation to use dichloromethane as organic solvent in a biphasic reaction medium with water. Previous studies show that dichloromethane cannot easily be substituted because a decrease of selectivity or an inhibition of the reaction is observed by use of alternative organic solvents. Thus, up to now only a few examples are known in which after a tedious optimization of the reaction dichloromethane could be replaced. In order to overcome the current limitations, we were interested in finding a TEMPO‐oxidation method in alternative organic solvents, which is applicable for various alcohol oxidations. As a result, we found a method for N‑oxyl radical‑catalyzed oxidation using sodium hypochlorite as oxidation agent in nitriles as organic solvent component instead of dichloromethane. Besides the oxidation of aromatic primary alcohols also aliphatic primary alcohols, secondary alcohols as well as dialcohols were successfully converted when using this method, showing high selectivity towards the carbonyl compound and low amounts of the acid side‐product.

Abstract:2,2,6,6'‐Tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) is a highly efficient oxidation catalyst, valued for its environmentally benign nature, particularly in comparison to transition‐metal catalysts. Despite their merits, TEMPO‐based catalysts are not notably cost‐effective. Immobilization of TEMPO onto supports offers a promising strategy to overcome this limitation. In this work, we present the synthesis and application of immobilized TEMPO catalysts 2–5, prepared via a straightforward condensation reaction, for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. These catalysts demonstrate remarkable activity for alcohol oxidations under continuous‐flow conditions, employing nitric acid as the co‐catalyst. Notably, catalyst 2 immobilized by COOH silica gel exhibits outstanding performance for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol by oxygen gas, achieving a turnover frequency (TOF) of 15 h−1 and a turnover number (TON) exceeding 300. Catalyst 2 further demonstrates broad substrate scope, effectively oxidizing primary, secondary, and benzylic alcohols. Post‐reaction analysis of spent catalyst 2 reveals that deactivation primarily stems from nitrosation of the N‐O bond. Interestingly, the amide moiety remains intact despite the harsh acidic reaction conditions.

Abstract:A novel and efficient protocol for the oxidation of beta-isophorone (beta-IP) using molecular oxygen without any additives catalyzed by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) has been established. The generally accepted catalytic mechanism of alcohols by the oxoammonium cation (TEMPO+) derived from TEMPO indeed fails to explain our experimental observations, because a favorable radical-based process is confirmed by electron spin resonance measurements. Our results show that a plateau of the time-dependence curve is observed in the oxidation of beta-IP with TEMPO at low temperature, which is quite different from that of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The proposed mechanism of this catalytic process is also compared with that of NHPI. The theoretically characterized reaction pathways show that unlike the phthalimide N-oxyl radical, TEMPO promotes the oxidation via its interaction with the active intermediate hydroperoxide (ROOH) rather than its initial interaction with beta-IP, and byproduct water also assists the alpha-H atom transfer from ROOH to TEMPO. In addition to the intensive oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by TEMPO, the present study widens its specific applications in the active C-H bonds of hydrocarbons, and also provides new insights into its promoted metal-free oxidation.

Abstract:We report a facile, efficient procedure for selective oxidation of activated alcohols by use of a novel supported ionic-liquid catalyst produced by coating polystyrene–TEMPO resin with the ionic liquid [bmim]PF 6 and CuCl 2 . The oxidation affords aldehydes or ketones in excellent yield and with high selectivity. It is worthy of note that the supported ionic-liquid layer substantially enhances catalytic activity, and the catalyst can easily be recycled. Graphical abstract

Abstract:Heterogeneous solvent-metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols under ambient conditions is interesting but remains a significant challenge. Herein, a series of porous TEMPO-functionalized poly(ionic liquid)s (TEMPO-PILs) featuring a pure polycationic framework were successfully developed through the free radical polymerization of the ionic liquid 3-(2-chloroacetic acid-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxo-4-piperidyl)-1-vinylimidazolium chloride and bis-vinylimidazolium bromide salt. Characterizations revealed that the obtained TEMPO-PILs possessed a high TEMPO density, abundant bromide ions, and a tunable porous structure, which enabled them to serve as solvent-free heterogeneous organocatalysts for the metal-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol under ambient conditions, exhibiting high catalytic activity and stable recyclability. A high yield of 99% coupled with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 13.3 h −1 was obtainable, which is higher than most of the reported TEMPO-based heterogeneous catalysts, even superior to homogeneous TEMPO-functionalized ionic liquids. Furthermore, a broad range of alcohols were effectively converted into their corresponding ketones and aldehydes. A possible reaction mechanism is proposed for understanding the catalytic oxidation behavior, indicative of the synergistic effect of TEMPO moieties and bromide ions.

Abstract:The development of robust heterogeneous catalysts that can realize the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in metal-free conditions is a profound challenge. Here, we report a reliable methodology to covalently graft 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) moieties on commercial activated carbons. Catalyst activity and stability are investigated in a continuous micro-packed bed. Notably, the catalytic activity achieved in the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (Turnover frequency: 135.9 h(-1), Turnover number: 328.9) is superior to the catalysts reported in the literature (Turnover frequency: 0.5-67 h(-1)) and the state-of-art commercial catalysts (Turnover number: 205.6). Additionally, the influence of H2O on the benzaldehyde yield indicated that H2O as the only by-product plays a promotional role in TEMPO/TBN catalytic system. Based on these results and previous mechanism analysis, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed. Post-catalytic analysis and regeneration strategy indicated that the cleavage of the amide bond linkages is the main reason for catalyst deactivation. (C) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An aerobic oxidation reaction of alcohols toward aldehydes or ketones using catalytic amounts of Fe(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O, 4-OH-TEMPO, and NaCl has been developed. Unraveling the Mechanism of Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation by a Cu/pytl-β-Cyclodextrin/TEMPO Catalytic System under Air in Neat Water

Abstract:The mechanism for the oxidation of p-tolylmethanol to p-tolualdehyde catalyzed by a Cu/pytl-β-cyclodextrin/TEMPO (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy) catalytic system under air in neat water is fully investigated by density functional theory (DFT). Four possible pathways (paths A → D) are presented. The calculated TOF = 0.67 h–1 for path A is consistent with the experimental TOF = 1.9 h–1 but much lower than that for path D (TOF = 1.1 × 105 h–1). The results demonstrate that path A is the dominant pathway under the optimal experimental conditions, even though path D is more kinetically favorable. This is because the concentration of precatalyst 11 [(pytl-β-CD)CuII(OH)] in path D is too low to start path D, so p-tolylmethanol oxidation can only proceed via path A. This finding implies that the relative concentration of precatalysts in a one-pot synthesis experiment plays a vital role in the aerobic alcohol oxidation reaction. Based on this finding, we speculate that the direct use of the presynthesized precatalyst 11 or addition of an appropriate amount of NaOH to the reaction solution, but with the total amount of the base added unchanged, is a good way to improve its catalytic activity.
