Abstract:The complex generated in situ between CuI and TPA(tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine)combined with TEMPO can be successfully applied to the aerobic oxidation of benzyl and allyl alcohols in acetonitrile,with more than 90%conversion and yield.Furthermore,the oxidation can be performed at room temperature and any base as additive is needless.

Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:The TEMPO‐catalyzed oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes has emerged to one of the most widely applied methodologies for such transformations. Advantages are the utilization of sodium hypochlorite, a component of household bleach, as oxidation agent and the use of water as a co‐solvent. However, a major drawback of this method is the often occurring strict limitation to use dichloromethane as organic solvent in a biphasic reaction medium with water. Previous studies show that dichloromethane cannot easily be substituted because a decrease of selectivity or an inhibition of the reaction is observed by use of alternative organic solvents. Thus, up to now only a few examples are known in which after a tedious optimization of the reaction dichloromethane could be replaced. In order to overcome the current limitations, we were interested in finding a TEMPO‐oxidation method in alternative organic solvents, which is applicable for various alcohol oxidations. As a result, we found a method for N‑oxyl radical‑catalyzed oxidation using sodium hypochlorite as oxidation agent in nitriles as organic solvent component instead of dichloromethane. Besides the oxidation of aromatic primary alcohols also aliphatic primary alcohols, secondary alcohols as well as dialcohols were successfully converted when using this method, showing high selectivity towards the carbonyl compound and low amounts of the acid side‐product.

Abstract:An aerobic oxidation reaction of alcohols toward aldehydes or ketones using catalytic amounts of Fe(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O, 4-OH-TEMPO, and NaCl has been developed. Compared with the former catalytic system with TEMPO developed in this group, the new protocol using 4-OH-TEMPO, which is much cheaper on an industrial scale, accomplished the transformation with a higher selectivity, especially for aliphatic alcohols toward aldehydes. alpha,beta-Unsaturated alkynals or alkynones can be efficiently synthesized from propargyl alcohols, which has been much less studied in the literature.

Abstract:In ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6])-H2O, a highly chemoselective oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the presence of aliphatic ones to the corresponding hydroxyl benzyl aldehydes and ketones was allowed in high yields using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)/NaBr/IL-TEMPO (ionic liquid immobilized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpipericline-1-oxyl) as a facile and effective catalytic oxidation system. The medium, [bmim][PF6], together with the catalyst IL-TEMPO could be easily recycled for ten runs without any influence on the efficacy of the reaction in terms of yield and selectivity of the product.

[Imim-TEMPO][X] (X= FeCl4, CuCl2) has been proved to be efficient and recyclable catalysts with modest or excellent yields and selectivity. Therefore, relevant literatures are summarized herein.

Abstract:A simple and benign continuous flow oxidation protocol for the selective conversion of primary and secondary alcohols into their respective aldehyde and ketone products is reported. This approach makes use of catalytic amounts of TEMPO in combination with sodium bromide and sodium hypochlorite in a biphasic solvent system. A variety of substrates are tolerated including those containing heterocycles based on potentially sensitive nitrogen and sulfur moieties. The flow approach can be coupled with inline reactive extraction by formation of the carbonyl-bisulfite adduct which aids in separation of remaining substrate or other impurities. Process robustness is evaluated for the preparation of phenylpropanal at decagram scale, a trifluoromethylated oxazole building block as well as a late-stage intermediate for the anti-HIV drug maraviroc which demonstrates the potential value of this continuous oxidation method.

Abstract:An efficient aerobic oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes or ketones by the catalyzed system of I2/NaNO2/4-OH-TEMPO in the presence of acetic acid was investigated.The influence of each component and the amount of catalyst were studied.Iodine is used as co-catalyst instead of metal in the reaction.Aerobic oxidations of benzylic alcohols were almost completed under optimized conditions and the product with yield of 90% can be obtained.

Abstract:Homogeneous Cu(I)/NMI/TEMPO catalyst system (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) has been investigated for its catalysis on the aerobic oxidation of 1-octanol and other alcohols into aldehydes under room temperature. The catalytic species was found to be a Cu(I) centre coordinated by two NMI molecules and other two weakly bound solvent molecules, [Cu(NMI) 2 (Sol) 2 ] + (Sol = solvent). When CuI was used, this species could be [Cu(NMI)I(Sol) 2 ]. Not like being speculated previously, NMI in this system acts solely as a ligand and its role coordinated to the copper centre enhanced the electron density on the metal centre which promoted the O 2 binding in the catalysis. The labile solvent binding to the Cu(I) centre is essential to ensure both oxygen and substrate binding. The catalyst system is suitable for the oxidation of various alcohols using a simple reaction setup and workup. In particular, the system possesses strong oxidizing capability in quantitative conversion of benzylic alcohols regardless of the substituents on the phenyl ring and allylic alcohols into aldehydes. A plausible mechanism was also proposed for the catalysis. Graphical Abstract The aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols at room temperature to corresponding aldehydes was achieved by the catalyst composed by Cu(I) and methyl imidazole (NMI) mediated by TEMPO in acetonitrile. The catalytic species is proposed to be such a Cu(I) complex that two of its four coordinating sites are occupied by a strong ligand(s) and the rest two are weakly bound by solvent molecules.

Abstract:The selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is an important industrial challenge due to the easy further overoxidation of these products to acids and esters. The most common industrial methods require organic radicals such as 2,2,6,6,-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) for the selective conversion of alcohols to carbonyl compounds with the formation of TEMPOH, which can be regenerated back to TEMPO by oxygen over metal complexes. The high cost and difficulties related to the separation of complexes prompted us to develop heterogeneous catalysts by coordinating TEMPO over acid sites in zeolite BEA with encapsulated RuO2 nanoparticles. The catalyst demonstrates excellent activity, selectivity, and stability for the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. The analysis of the reaction mechanism confirms the activation of alcohols by TEMPO and the subsequent regeneration of TEMPOH by RuO2.

Abstract:Imidazolium salts bearing TEMPO groups react with commercially available copper powder affording Cu-NHC complexes. The in situ generated Cu-NHC-TEMPO complexes are quite efficient catalysts for aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols into aldehydes. The catalyst is easily available, and various primary alcohols were selectively converted to aldehydes in excellent yields.
