Abstract:Owing to localized heating by the welding process and subsequent rapid cooling, the residual stresses and distortion can arise in the weldment. For the full welding valve, because its last procedure was welding, it was important to control the residual stresses and distortion in order to assure rotating of spool, valve sealing and the resistance of the stress corrosion and deformation in active service. In this test, compared with normal welding, effects of vibratory weld conditioning and wind cooling method on the residual stresses and transverse contraction distortion were researched in submerged are multipass welding. The residual stresses were measured using the blind hole drilling method after welding and cooling to room temperature. Transverse contraction distortion was measured after each pass was welded. The results showed that compared with normal welding, vibratory weld conditioning relieved the residual stresses greatly and transverse contraction distortion decreased by about 60%. Wind cooling method relieved the residual stress slightly and transverse contraction distortion decreased by about 30%. According to analysis, effects of vibratory weld conditioning on the residual stresses and transverse contraction distortion mainly lay in that the mechanical vibration could make grains fine and the distribution of microstructure uniform. Effects of wind cooling method on the residual stresses and transverse contraction distortion mainly lay in that wind cooling could accelerate heat dissipation and make thermal plastic deformation band narrow. Through comparison of three welding methods, vibratory weld conditioning was the best method to relief the residual stresses and distortion.
