The main part of the paper is concerned with proving uniqueness and strong uniqueness theorems. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 25 (2004), 685-705) fails, is provided and a corrected version of the theorem is presented.

Abstract:Let (S,Σ,μ) be a complete positive σ-finite measure space and let X be a Banach space. We are concerned with the proximinality problem for the best simultaneous approximations to two functions in Lp(S,Σ,X). Let Σ0 be a sub-σ-algebra of Σ and Y a nonempty locally weakly compact convex subset of X such that spanY¯ and its dual have the Radon–Nikodym property. We prove that Lp(S,Σ0,Y) is N-simultaneous proximinal in Lp(S,Σ,X) (with the additional assumption that (S,Σ,μ) be finite for the case when p=1). Furthermore, for the special case when Σ0=Σ, we show that the assumption that the dual of spanY¯ has the Radon–Nikodym property can be removed.

Abstract:We address the problem of the best uniform approximation of a continuous function on a convex domain. The approximation is by linear combinations of a finite system of functions (not necessarily Chebyshev) under arbitrary linear constraints. By modifying the concept of alternance and of the Remez iterative procedure we present a method, which demonstrates its efficiency in numerical problems. The linear rate of convergence is proved under some favourable assumptions. A special attention is paid to systems of complex exponents, Gaussian functions, lacunar algebraic and trigonometric polynomials. Applications to signal processing, linear ODE, switching dynamical systems, and to Markov-Bernstein type inequalities are considered.

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

We establish some N-simultaneous proximinality results of L p (S,Σ0, Y) in L p (S,Σ,X) without the Radon-Nikodým property (RNP) assumptions on the space \(\overline {spanY}\) and its dual \(\overline {spanY} ^*\), where Σ0 is a sub-σ-algebra of Σ and Y a nonempty locally weakly compact closed convex subset of X. In particular, we completely solve one open problem and partially solve another one in Luo et al. (2011).

Approximation Theory and Its Applications

Abstract:Let R be a normed linear space, K be an arbitrary convex subset of an n-dimensional subspace Φ n ⊂R. This paper first gives a general charactaerization for a best approximation from K in form of “zero in the convex hull”. Applying it to the uniform approximation by generalized polynomials with restricted ranges, we get further an alternation characterization. Our results ocntains the special cases of interpolatory approximation, positive approximation, copositive approximation, and the classical characterizations in forms of convex hull and alternation in approximation without restriction.
