Abstract:The best polynomial approximation is closely related to the Ditzian–Totik modulus of smoothness. In 1988, Z. Ditzian and V. Totik gave some equivalences between them and the class of Besov-type spacesBα,spwith 1≤p≤∞ and 1≤s≤∞. We extend these equivalences to the similar Besov-type spaces with 0<s<1. We also give some new equivalences by means of the behavior of best polynomial approximation.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the local approximation by Baskakov-Durrmeyer operators. The continuous functions of local Lipschitz-alpha (0<alpha<1) on any subset. of [0, infinity) are characterized by the local rate of convergence of Baskakov-Durrmeyer operators. The main difference between these operators and their classical and Kantorovich-variants respectively is that they have commutativity, which is crucial for our purpose. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the problem of weighted best simultaneous approximations in Banach spaces. The weighted best simultaneous approximations to sequences from S- and BS-suns in the Banach space are characterized in view of the Kolmogorov conditions. Applications are provided for weighted best simultaneous approximations from RS-sets and strict RS-sets. Our results obtained in the present paper extend and improve all earlier known results in this direction.

Abstract:This paper aims at approximation of functions by linear integral operators on variable exponent spaces associated with a general exponent function on a domain of a Euclidean space. Under a log-Hölder continuity assumption of the exponent function, we present quantitative estimates for the approximation and solve an open problem raised in our earlier work. As applications of our key estimates, we provide high orders of approximation by quasi-interpolation type and linear combinations of Bernstein type integral operators on variable exponent spaces. We also introduce K-functionals and moduli of smoothness on variable exponent spaces and discuss their relationships and applications.

Abstract:The uniqueness of positive approximation for linear operators on two-dimensional Hilbert space is discussed in detail. In an infinite-dimensional case, a characterization is given when the unique positive approximation of a linear operator exists. Finally, a sufficient condition for some linear operators is presented if their unique positive approximations do not exist.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 25 (2004), 685-705) fails, is provided and a corrected version of the theorem is presented.

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

Abstract:We study best approximations in Banach spaces via Birkhoff–James orthogonality of functionals. To exhibit the usefulness of Birkhoff–James orthogonality techniques in the study of best approximation problems, some algorithms and distance formulae are presented. As an application of our study, we obtain some crucial inequalities, which also strengthen the classical Hölder's inequality. The relevance of the algorithms and the inequalities are discussed through concrete examples.

Abstract:In the present paper, we deal with some general estimates for the difference of operators which are associated with different fundamental functions. In order to exemplify the theoretical results presented in (for example) Theorem 2, we provide the estimates of the differences between some of the most representative operators used in Approximation Theory in especially the difference between the Baskakov and the Szász–Mirakyan operators, the difference between the Baskakov and the Szász–Mirakyan–Baskakov operators, the difference of two genuine-Durrmeyer type operators, and the difference of the Durrmeyer operators and the Lupaş–Durrmeyer operators. By means of illustrative numerical examples, we show that, for particular cases, our result improves the estimates obtained by using the classical result of Shisha and Mond. We also provide the symmetry aspects of some of these approximations operators which we have studied in this paper.

We mainly consider approximation by Bernstein type linear operators. Under an assumption of log-Hölder continuity of the exponent functionp, we verify a conjecture raised previously about the uniform boundedness of Bernstein-Durrmeyer and Bernstein-Kantorovich operators on theLρp(·)space.
