Abstract:The problem of strong uniqueness of best approximation from an RS-set in a Banach space is considered. For a fixed RS-set G and an element x ∈ X, we proved that the best approximation g* to x from G is strongly unique.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Abstract:To provide a Kolmogorov-type condition for characterizing a best approximation in a continuous complex-valued function space, it is usually assumed that the family of closed convex sets in the complex plane used to restrict the range satisfies a strong interior-point condition, and this excludes the interesting case when some t is a line-segment or a singleton. The main aim of the present paper is to remove this restriction by virtue of a study of the notion of the strong CHIP for an infinite system of closed convex sets in a continuous complex-valued function space.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the problem of weighted best simultaneous approximations in Banach spaces. The weighted best simultaneous approximations to sequences from S- and BS-suns in the Banach space are characterized in view of the Kolmogorov conditions. Applications are provided for weighted best simultaneous approximations from RS-sets and strict RS-sets. Our results obtained in the present paper extend and improve all earlier known results in this direction.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of the best restricted range approximations of complex-valued continuous functions. Several properties for the approximating set \(\mathcal{P}_\Omega \) such that the classical characterization results and/or the uniqueness results of the best approximations hold are introduced. Under the very mild conditions, we prove that these properties are equivalent that \(\mathcal{P}\) is a Haar subspce.

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

Abstract:Let G be a strict RS-set (resp. an RS-set) in X and let F be a bounded (resp. totally bounded) subset of X satisfying r"G(F)>r"X(F), where r"G(F) is the restricted Chebyshev radius of F with respect to G. It is shown that the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique in the case when X is a real Banach space, and that, under some additional convexity assumptions, the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique of order @a>=2 in the case when X is a complex Banach space.

Abstract:Several fundamental concepts such as the basic constraint qualification (BCQ), the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP), and the perturbations for convex systems of inequalities in Banach spaces (over R or C) are extended and studied; here the systems are not necessarily finite. Their relationships with each other in connection with the best approximations are investigated. As applications, we establish results on the unconstrained reformulation of best approximations with infinitely many constraints in Hilbert spaces; also we give several characterizations of best restricted range approximations in C(Q) under quite general constraints.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 25 (2004), 685-705) fails, is provided and a corrected version of the theorem is presented.

The strong "conical hull intersection property" (CHIP) and the "basic constraint qualification" (BCQ) condition are discussed. Abstract:Restricted range approximation in uniform norm from an extended Haar space of a certain order is an important and widely applicable problem in restricted approximations. In the past 20 years or more, many authors have investigated the characterization of best approximations in various special cases of restricted range approximation, which include approximation with interpolatory constraints, one-sided approximation, and copositive approximation. But the characterization in the general case is still an open question. The paper gives a general characterization theorem in the form of convex hull and alternation. Many known important results are exactly its special cases.

Abstract:We study best approximations in Banach spaces via Birkhoff–James orthogonality of functionals. To exhibit the usefulness of Birkhoff–James orthogonality techniques in the study of best approximation problems, some algorithms and distance formulae are presented. As an application of our study, we obtain some crucial inequalities, which also strengthen the classical Hölder's inequality. The relevance of the algorithms and the inequalities are discussed through concrete examples.
