The main part of the paper is concerned with proving uniqueness and strong uniqueness theorems. We are concerned with the proximinality problem for the best simultaneous approximations to two functions in Lp(S,Σ,X). Let Σ0 be a sub-σ-algebra of Σ and Y a nonempty locally weakly compact convex subset of X such that spanY¯ and its dual have the Radon–Nikodym property. We prove that Lp(S,Σ0,Y) is N-simultaneous proximinal in Lp(S,Σ,X) (with the additional assumption that (S,Σ,μ) be finite for the case when p=1). Furthermore, for the special case when Σ0=Σ, we show that the assumption that the dual of spanY¯ has the Radon–Nikodym property can be removed.

Abstract:Best simultaneous approximation (BSA) for finitely or infinitely many functions are considered under the uniform norm and other important norms. Characterization theorems for a BSA from a finite-dimensional subspace are obtained by a generalized minimax theorem. From the characterization theorem a strong unicity theorem is also deduced for a BSA.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the problem of weighted best simultaneous approximations in Banach spaces. The weighted best simultaneous approximations to sequences from S- and BS-suns in the Banach space are characterized in view of the Kolmogorov conditions. Applications are provided for weighted best simultaneous approximations from RS-sets and strict RS-sets. Our results obtained in the present paper extend and improve all earlier known results in this direction.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 25 (2004), 685-705) fails, is provided and a corrected version of the theorem is presented.

We establish some N-simultaneous proximinality results of L p (S,Σ0, Y) in L p (S,Σ,X) without the Radon-Nikodým property (RNP) assumptions on the space \(\overline {spanY}\) and its dual \(\overline {spanY} ^*\), where Σ0 is a sub-σ-algebra of Σ and Y a nonempty locally weakly compact closed convex subset of X. In particular, we completely solve one open problem and partially solve another one in Luo et al. (2011).

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Abstract:Let E be a closed subset of the unit circle of measure zero. Recently, Beise and Müller showed the existence of a function in the Hardy space H2 for which the partial sums of its Taylor series approximate any continuous function on E. In this paper, we establish an analogue of this result in a non-linear setting where we consider optimal polynomial approximants of reciprocals of functions in H2 instead of Taylor polynomials. The proof uses a new result on simultaneous zero-free approximation of independent interest. Our results extend to the Dirichlet space D and are expected for more general Dirichlet-type spaces.

The strong "conical hull intersection property" (CHIP) and the "basic constraint qualification" (BCQ) condition are discussed. Abstract:We study approximation problems for infinitely differentiable multivariate functions in the worst-case setting. Using a series of information-based algorithms as approximation tools, in which each algorithm is constructed by performing finitely many standard information operations, we prove that the L ∞ -approximation problem is exponentially convergent. As a corollary, we show that the corresponding integral problem is exponentially convergent as well.
