Abstract:The problem of strong uniqueness of best approximation from an RS-set in a Banach space is considered. For a fixed RS-set G and an element x ∈ X, we proved that the best approximation g* to x from G is strongly unique.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Abstract:Let G be a strict RS-set (resp. an RS-set) in X and let F be a bounded (resp. totally bounded) subset of X satisfying r"G(F)>r"X(F), where r"G(F) is the restricted Chebyshev radius of F with respect to G. It is shown that the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique in the case when X is a real Banach space, and that, under some additional convexity assumptions, the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique of order @a>=2 in the case when X is a complex Banach space.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with the problem of weighted best simultaneous approximations in Banach spaces. The weighted best simultaneous approximations to sequences from S- and BS-suns in the Banach space are characterized in view of the Kolmogorov conditions. Applications are provided for weighted best simultaneous approximations from RS-sets and strict RS-sets. Our results obtained in the present paper extend and improve all earlier known results in this direction.

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

We establish some N-simultaneous proximinality results of L p (S,Σ0, Y) in L p (S,Σ,X) without the Radon-Nikodým property (RNP) assumptions on the space \(\overline {spanY}\) and its dual \(\overline {spanY} ^*\), where Σ0 is a sub-σ-algebra of Σ and Y a nonempty locally weakly compact closed convex subset of X. In particular, we completely solve one open problem and partially solve another one in Luo et al. (2011).

Abstract:Let C be a closed bounded convex subset of X with 0 being an interior point of C and p\"C be the Minkowski functional with respect to C. Let G be a nonempty closed, boundedly relatively weakly compact subset of a Banach space X. For a point x@?X, we say the minimization problem min\"C(x, G) is well posed if there exists a unique point z such that p\"C(z-x)=@l\"C(x, G) and every sequence {z\"n}@?G satisfying lim\"n\"-\"~p\"C(z\"n-x)=@l\"C(x, G) converges strongly to the point z, where @l\"C(x, G)=inf\"z\"@?\"Gp\"C(z-x). Under the assumption that C is both strictly convex and Kadec, we prove that the set X\"o(G) of all x@?X such that the problem min\"C(x, G) is well posed is a residual subset of X extending the results in the case that the modulus of convexity of C is strictly positive due to Blasi and Myjak. In addition, we also prove these conditions are necessary.
