Abstract:Let R be a normed linear space, K be an arbitrary convex subset of an n-dimensional subspace Φ n ⊂R. This paper first gives a general charactaerization for a best approximation from K in form of “zero in the convex hull”. Applying it to the uniform approximation by generalized polynomials with restricted ranges, we get further an alternation characterization. Our results ocntains the special cases of interpolatory approximation, positive approximation, copositive approximation, and the classical characterizations in forms of convex hull and alternation in approximation without restriction.

Abstract:We characterize a nonlinear full invariant of compact Banach-space maps: Let ( X , ‖.‖) and ( Y , ‖.‖) be two Banach spaces and P C ( X , Y ) be all compact maps which map ( X , ‖.‖) to ( Y , ‖.‖). Then each weak operator-topology subseries-convergent series ∑ i P i in P c ( X , Y ) is also uniform-topology subseries-convergent iff each bounded map from ( X , ‖.‖) to ( l 1 , ‖.‖ 1 ) is a compact map. The necessary condition for each weak operator-topology subseries-convergent series ∑ i P i in P C ( X , Y ) to be also uniform-topology subseries-convergent is that ( X , ‖.‖) and ( X ′, ‖.‖) both contain no copy of c 0 . This necessary condition is not sufficient.

Approximation Theory and Its Applications

Abstract:This paper gives a general characterization theorem of a best uniform approximation of generalized polynomial having multiple restricted ranges of its derivatives. This theorem is widely applicable. The results on characterization in many standard approximations, such as approximation with Hermite-Birkhoff interpolatory side conditions, multiple comonotone approximation, and approximation by algebraic polynomials having bounded coefficients, etc., are special cases of our results.

Abstract:The present paper is concerned with problems of the strong uniqueness of the best approximation and the characterization of a uniqueness element in operator spaces. Some results on the strong uniqueness of the best approximation operator from RS-sets are proved and the uniqueness element of a sun in the compact operator space from c(0) to c(0) is characterized by the strict Kolmogorov's condition. Some recent results due to Lewicki and others are extended and improved.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 25 (2004), 685-705) fails, is provided and a corrected version of the theorem is presented.

Let WOT and UOT be the weak operator topology and uniform operator topology on K (X, Y), respectively. In this paper, we characterize a full-invariant property of K (X, Y); that is, if the sequence space X has the signed-weak gliding hump property, then each; lambda-multiplier WOT-convergent series Sigma(i) T-i in K(X, Y) must be X-multiplier convergent with respect to all topologies between WOT and UOT if and only if each continuous linear operator T: (X, tau(1)) --> or (lambda(beta), sigma(lambda(beta),lambda)) is compact. Abstract:Restricted range approximation in uniform norm from an extended Haar space of a certain order is an important and widely applicable problem in restricted approximations. In the past 20 years or more, many authors have investigated the characterization of best approximations in various special cases of restricted range approximation, which include approximation with interpolatory constraints, one-sided approximation, and copositive approximation. But the characterization in the general case is still an open question. The paper gives a general characterization theorem in the form of convex hull and alternation. Many known important results are exactly its special cases.

Abstract:Stochastic incompleteness of a Riemannian manifold $M$ amounts to the nonconservation of probability for the heat semigroup on $M$. We show that this property is equivalent to the existence of nonnegative, nontrivial, bounded (sub)solutions to $\Delta W=\psi(W)$ for one, hence all, general nonlinearity $\psi$ which is only required to be continuous, nondecreasing, with $\psi(0)=0$ and $\psi>0$ in $(0,+\infty)$. Similar statements hold for unsigned (sub)solutions. We also prove that stochastic incompleteness is equivalent to the nonuniqueness of bounded solutions to the nonlinear parabolic equation $\partial_t u =\Delta\phi(u)$ with bounded initial data for one, hence all, general nonlinearity $\phi$ which is only required to be continuous, nondecreasing and nonconstant. Such a generality allows us to deal with equations of both fast-diffusion and porous-medium type, as well as with the one-phase and two-phase classical Stefan problems, which seem to have never been investigated in the manifold setting.
