Abstract:The catalyst system of cobalt,manganese and bromine was used in the process of p -xylene (PX) liquid phase oxidation. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect during reaction. To investigate the distinctive role of each catalyst component,a series of PX oxidation experiments in different catalyst conditions such as Co/Mn ratios,bromine and total catalyst concentrations were carried out. The fractional kinetic model was used to fit the data and the rate constant for each oxidation step was obtained. The result showed that,in the experimental conditions under consideration,there existed an optimum ratio of cobalt vs manganese (Co/Mn=1) and the process was more sensitive to the change of bromine concentration than that of cobalt or manganese.

Abstract:The reasons of introducing Co,Mn,Br catalyst in the reaction and the catalytic mechanism are discussed.The high selectivity and high activity of Amoco process catalyst system are obtained with the synergistic effect of Co/Mn/Br.In HAc solvent,the whole free-radical chain reaction is initiated by Co 3+ with high oxidation ability.But as the temperature is high(130℃),Co 3+ will strong decarboxylate,the selectivity,activity of it will sharp decreased with the increasing of temperature.Br will complexation with Co,the half period of Co 3+ will be reduced,decarboxylate will be weakened.When Co is replaced by Mn in same amount of subslance,the oxidation speed of PT will increased 4.3 times,the activity of Co/Mn/Br system is 11 times than that of Co/Mn system.

Abstract:Hafnium acetate and hafnium bromide have been prepared from hafnium oxychloride in the laboratory. A semicontinuous experimental unit and a method have been used for the evaluation of catalyst for the oxidation of PX at a high temperature and pressure.The catalyst activity of Cobalt-Manganese-Bromine-Hafnium Catalyst System made from Hafnium acetate and hafnium bromide and the effect of hafnium concentration have been studied.It is found that Hafnium acetate and hafnium bromide have similar activity and the activity increases with the concentration of hafnium.The hafnium has a varied activity on the different steps of PX oxidation with a 36%increase for the rate of PX consumption and a 7%increase for the rate of PT reaction at 60μg/g hafnium addition.

Abstract:Advances of the key technique and research program for p-xylene oxidation reactor in polyester industry were reviewed. The characteristics of p-xylene oxidation reaction in liquid phase, the chemical engineering features of oxidation reactor and the research and development strategies of oxidation reactor were discussed. Gas-liquid dispersion, liquid-liquid mixing and solid particles suspension should be considered during reactor design. The future development trends was also analyzed.

Abstract:Burning of p-xylene and solvent during oxidation is the critical side reaction.In this paper the burning mechanism is analyzed and the kinetics model is developed on the basis of the radical chains reaction mechanism.Model parameters were determined by data fitting of the CO x transient response curves.The experimental results showed that, the CO x generating rates increased remarkably with increasing Co/Mn ratio and catalyst concentration.As compared with the main reaction, the burning rate was more sensitive to the change of the ratio of cobalt vs manganese, but less to bromine concentration.

Abstract:p-Xylene liquid phase oxidation would be accelerated by the addition of zirconium or hafnium ions to the Co/Mn/Br catalyst system. In this paper, the activating catalysis mechanisms of Zr and Hf promoters were presented concisely, and a series of PX oxidation experiments at different Zr and Hf concentrations were carried out. A well-known kinetic model was employed to fit the data and the rate constant for each oxidation step was obtained. The rate constant data show that the effect of Zr and Hf additives on the reaction rate of different stages of PX oxidation is various, and hafnium is more active than zirconium. In the other hand, CO_X productions data illustrate that the burning rate increase with adding Zr and Hf in a different extent.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel experimental technique for gas-liquid-solid reaction was developed to study kinetics of p -xylene oxidation under the condition of high temperature and pressure. Methyl and aldehyed oxidation during the p -xylene oxidation process was studied according to radical reaction mechanism and recycling of the cobalt-manganese-bromide catalyst. The coupling effect between catalysts and radical reactions was analyzed in detail, and a kinetic model was developed based on the proposed mechanism.Model parameters were determined by data fitting.The model agreed well with the experiments.

Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.

Abstract:A reactor model of p-xylene oxidation was presented in the paper,which was proved to be detailed enough to predict water content in the most general cases.Based on the model,simulation was carried out for existed industrial process,and the results indicated that there existed strong correlation among water content and reaction temperature and oxygen consumption rate.Finally,A simple formulation of water soft-measurement was obtained,which provided a base for water content in PX oxitaion real-time measurement.

Abstract:Highly selective synthesis of renewable p-xylene (PX) from bio-based 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethylene was successfully realized on H-Beta zeolite catalysts with further Al-modifications. The influences of different doping approaches on their reaction performances and coke deposition were systematically investigated. Solid-state NMR and SEM-EDS characterization indicates that the Al containing precursors have significant effects on the aluminum location and catalyst acidity. For H-Beta zeolite treated with aluminum nitrate, the contents of framework Al and Bronsted acid sites increase obviously, causing the formation of more hard coke on the used catalyst as shown in C-13 CP/MAS NMR and TPO profiles, while for H-Beta zeolite modified with aluminum isopropoxide, more non-framework Al are formed in the pores of H-Beta, leading to severer soft and hard coke deposition. However, H-Beta zeolite after further doping with alumina shows excellent and durable performances with a PX yield of 97% at a 2,5-DMF conversion of similar to 100%. It also has good stability and regeneration capability. Most importantly, the coke content decreases from 12 to 7 wt% on the spent H-Beta-alumina catalyst with mainly soft carbonaceous species due to its appropriate Bronsted/Lewis acid ratio. This work provides a deeper understanding of the role of B/L ratio in the sustainable conversion of 2,5-DMF and ethylene to p-xylene, paving the way for the synthesis of bulky chemicals from biomass feedstocks.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Abstract:Co-pyrolysis of plastics and biomass is expected to replace traditional petroleum processing to produce BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) on a large scale, which are important chemical raw materials. The introduction of bimetallic catalysts and hydrogen in co-pyrolysis systems is an effective strategy to increase the content of aromatic hydrocarbons in pyrolysis oils, which has not been studied so far. The present study investigated the efficacy of bimetallic catalysts in enhancing aromatization and Diels-Alder reactions in comparison to Mo/ZSM-5. The synergistic interaction between bimetals contributed to the improved selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly BTEX. Results revealed that NiMo/ZSM-5 catalysts led to higher aromatics selectivity in liquid oil, whereas FeMo/ZSM-5 resulted in higher BTEX selectivity in aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, metal oxide-supported bimetallic catalysts exhibited lower selectivity for aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid oil, despite facilitating higher liquid-oil yield. Among the metal oxide-supported bimetallic catalysts, FeMo/TiO2 demonstrated the highest selectivity (56%) for aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid oils. The introduction of hydrogen resulted in 100% selectivity of BTEX in aromatic hydrocarbons, thus highlighting the significance of hydrogenation in enhancing the selectivity of BTEX. Combined with the experimental results and literature, a possible reaction mechanism was also proposed.
Promoting Effect of FeOx Addition on the Mechanochemically Prepared Vanadium-Based Catalyst for Real PCDD/Fs Removal and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a “bottleneck” for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.
Heavy Oil to Chemicals: Multi-Stage Downer Catalytic Pyrolysis

Abstract:High yield of petrochemicals, such as light olefins and aromatics, is an important way for low-carbon utilization of petroleum. Based on China’s energy structure and technological advantages in the field of catalytic cracking, the direct production of light olefins and aromatics from heavy feedstock oil under the confinement of molecular sieves is an important development direction of China’s oil refining industry. It poses great challenges to the design of multi-phase reactors. Counter-current interaction between feed-oil and deep-cracking catalysts under high severity should be achieved to prevent preferential adsorption of heavy aromatics, reduce diffusion resistance in zeolitic nanopores, and boost deep cracking of short-chain alkanes. Millisecond residence time and plug-flow residence time distribution should be obtained to inhibit secondary reactions and reduce dry gas and coke production. This review focuses on the progress of discrete transport, reaction, and deactivation processes in the catalytic cracking of heavy oil directly to chemicals, as well as the progress of gas-solid heterogeneous reaction engineering and other related fields. The latest research work on the discrete adsorption-diffusion phenomenon and host-guest interactions of small molecules in zeolites are introduced, and it is proposed to use facet-selective nanosized zeolites with high resistance to coke formation and gas-solid counter-current contact plug flow reactors to overcome the above challenges. Finally, the multi-stage downer catalytic pyrolysis（MDCPTM） developed by Tsinghua University is introduced, which uses multi-stage downers in series while achieving both millisecond-level plug-flow within one stage and counter-current gas-solids interaction between each stage. In the 1 kg/h pilot plant,MDCPTM can gain excellent production distribution [51.54%（mass） yield of light olefins and 80.78%（mass）selectivity of BTEX in gasoline]. With MDCPTM as the core unit, the process, i.e., heavy oil to chemicals（HOTC）, is reported where the yield of the total chemicals can be up to 75%（mass）, with carbon emission reduced by more than 70% compared with existing technologies.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of light alkanes remains to be a great challenge for the wider use of alkanes as feedstocks. To achieve high activity and at the same time high selectivity, some key issues have to be addressed: (1) the stability of the desired products with respect to the reactants; (2) the roles of the active components in the catalysts, the structure and the functionality of the active centers; (3) the reducibility of the metal cations, the Lewis acid sites and their synergic effects with the basic sites of the lattice oxygen anions; ( 4) spatial isolation of the active centers; and (5) the mechanisms for the formation and transformation of the intermediates and their kinetic controls. In this contribution, we took selective oxidation of propane to acrolein as our target reaction, and reviewed mainly our own work, trying to provide some thinking and answers to these five questions.

Abstract:The trace amount of CO in H-2-rich gas poisons Pt electrode when it is adopted as feedstock for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Preferential oxidation of CO (PROX) is a promising approach to selectively oxidize the trace amount of CO while keeping H-2 unoxidized. Catalyst plays important roles in PROX. To date, enormous catalysts have been developed for PROX. Summarizing the catalysts developed for PROX and unveiling the reaction mechanism could definitely advance this research field. Herein, in this review, according to the nature of the active sites on the catalysts, we classify the catalysts into group VIII metal-based catalyst, group IB metal-based catalysts, group VIII-group IB bimetallic catalysts, transitional metal oxide catalysts as well as others, describe the progress of the catalysts in PROX in the latest five years, and extract the underlying reaction mechanism, with the aim to provide guidance for the rational design of efficient catalysts in the future.
In Situ DRFTIR Study of Propylene Selective Oxidation

Abstract:Many catalysis researches have been carried out in selective oxidation of hydrocarbon for economic profits as well as consideration of resource utilization and environmental protection in modern society. Among these, more profound research have been processed in propylene selective oxidation, but its reaction mechanism is still under debate. In situ Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (DRFTIR) technique was used to investigate systemically propylene selective oxidation over multi-component bismuth molybdate catalyst, including surface reaction and gas reaction behavior. The results showed that the reactive atmospheres in the cell reached steady within 30 minutes after reaction gases were admitted. The selective oxidation of propylene over catalyst surface effectively controlled deep oxidation products of propylene such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The centers of active sites of selective oxidation were surface lattice oxygens.

Abstract:The partial oxidation (POX) of natural gas is the main approach to produce acetylene. This process involves fuel-rich turbulent combustion, millisecond mixing and rapid quenching cooling, which are difficult to study by experiments and empirical macrokinetics. This work reported numerical simulations of the POX reactor by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with detailed chemistry. The GRI 3.0 and San Diego mechanisms were used. A modification was made to GRI 3.0 based on sensitive analysis and comparison with experimental data. With the modified GRI 3.0, the CFD simulation results agreed well with the industrial data. The influence of the reactant preheating temperature and equivalence ratio, which are most important operating parameters, was studied. The results showed that an optimum equivalence ratio exists for maximum acetylene yield. The increase of preheating temperature enhanced the acetylene yield and decreased the corresponding optimum equivalence ratio. The effect of adding C2H6 was also studied to explore the feasibility of using wet shale gas as feedstock of POX.
