Abstract:In the preparation of nano-particles of precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC), many factors, such as the reaction temperature, the concentration of reactants, the speed of stirring, the dispersing agent, and the crystal-growing controlling agent, have influence on crystal shape and agrregate state of PCC nano-particles. Highly dispersable PCC particles with a diameter of ca. 50nm were successfully prepared under the condition as following: temperature at 8～15℃, reactant concentrations in 0.1～ 0.4mol/L, stirring rate at 3～20 r/s, and reactant feeding time in 4～12 minutes.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate(CaCO3) ultrafine particles with different morphologies, including chainlike, flake, rod, rhombohedral, spherical and hollow spherical were successfully synthesized by a controlled precipitation method. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The main factors to influence the crystal structures and morphologies of CaCO3 in preparation process are discussed, which is helpful to understand the crystal nucleation and growth of CaCO3 ultrafine particles.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by adsorption phase synthesis (APS), impregnation method (IM) and precipitation synthesis (PS). The grain sizes of Fe2O3 prepared by APS and IM were much smaller than that by PS. In the APS process, when the reaction took place in the adsorption layer, strong chemical bonds between Fe2O3 particles and silica could be built, which inhibited the phase transformation from gamma-Fe2O3 to alpha-Fe2O3 during the calcination process. The physical interaction did not restrain the crystal transformation although the restriction on the aggregation of Fe2O3 particles was obvious.

Abstract:The composites of CaCO3 and calcium stearate were synthesized by co-precipitation method in sodium stearate solution. Through the SEM and XRD methods, it is found that the composites obtained at defferent temperature and concentration of organics have distinctive shapes, in which CaCO3 is mixed with two crystallization types of calcite and vaterite in the ratio of a well-regulated value. It is presumed that the organics in the solution assembled together to form micelles, with well arranged hydrophilic groups on surface, which affect the crystallization of calcium carbonate by different matching forms. The shape and movement way of the micelles vary at different temperature and concentration of organics and cause the multi-formed composites with mixture crystals in different ratios.
Mechanism and surface characteristics of polyacrylic acid-coated ultra-fine CaCO3

Abstract:The ultra-fine CaCO3 coated with acrylic acid monomer and the polyacrylic acid with varied molecular weight was prepared. The influences of the chemical properties of the treating agent, the treatment method and conditions on the coating efficiency were investigated. The tropism and arrangement of the treating molecules on the surface greatly affected the dissolving curves observed, which was proved by IGC and XPS analysis. Maximum efficacy was expected at the monolayer coverage and it's coating amount was about 0.6 wt% according to the calculations based on the alignment mode which was in agreement with the results deduced from the molar ratio of O/Ca and C-290/Ca and inferred from the dissolving curves. The interaction mechanism between carboxyl group and calcite surface was also preliminary elucidated from the point of view of O/Ca and C-290/Ca molar ratio.

Abstract:Ultrafine particles of CaCO3 were synthesized by dispersing the mixture of CO2 and N2 into the Ca(OH)2/H2O slurry with a micropore-plate. Because the micropore is micrometers scale, process of momentum transfer, mass transfer and reaction was significantly enhanced. The carbonation process of Ca(OH)2/H2O system was monitored with pH and conductivity. Operation conditions were investigated on the specific surface area of particles, such as initial slurry concentration and volume, gas flowrate and concentration, and temperature. The crystal structure of particles was characterized with BET, IR, TEM, SEM, etc. Results showed ultrafine particles were calcite with general shape of cube, whose size was about 40 nm and specific surface area was more than 25 m2/g. This preparation method is easy to operate.

Abstract:As an essential inorganic material, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most abundant minerals in nature, whose preparation by the carbonation of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] suspension involves complex physical and chemical processes due to the presence of gas–solid–liquid phases. It is challenging to accurately predict the final morphology of CaCO3. In this paper, a novel spindle-shaped CaCO3 covered with a mass of nanoscale rhombic calcite subunits was prepared via the carbonation method. This structure was mainly formed by the aggregation of nanoparticles in the pre-reaction stage and turned into a classical ion–ion growth process at the stage of the late reaction. During the pre-reaction period, solid Ca(OH)2 kept the solution supersaturated and made the aggregation of nanoparticles dominate and assemble to form the nanochains of CaCO3. Subsequently, the aggregation of nanochains formed a dumbbell shape, which was accompanied by the recrystallization of nanoparticles inside aggregates to create an ordered single-crystal spindle structure. Finally, the concentration of Ca(OH)2 decreased, and a layer of nanoscale rhombic calcite subunits grew on the surface of spindle CaCO3. This work will provide new insights into the industrial preparation of CaCO3 with controlled morphology and contribute to understanding the biomineralization of aggregation-based growth in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Nano‐CaCO3 is a potential nanomaterial at present. In this paper, the preparation process (physical and chemical methods), modification methods (physical and chemical modification), and application fields (chemical, energy, food, biomedicine, and environment industries) of nano‐CaCO3 are introduced and discussed. This provides theoretical guidance for people who understand the field. Nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) is a tiny inorganic filler created in the 1980s. It boasts a high specific surface area, excellent biocompatibility, and nontoxicity. As a result, it finds extensive applications in the rubber, plastic, and paper industries. This paper intends to give a general overview of the preparation process, surface modification, and application of nano‐CaCO3. In particular, the preparation process conditions, the characteristics of the prepared nano‐CaCO3, the method and mechanism of surface modification, and also the main application research progress of nano‐CaCO3 are described comprehensively. This paper has a good guiding effect for the researchers and related staff engaged in the study of nano‐CaCO3.

Abstract:Yttrium oxide powder with large particle sizes and spherical shapes were prepared by precipitation with ammonium bicarbonate. The powders were characterizated by laser partical size analyzer,SEM and BET. Influence of reaction temperature,concentration of feed liquid,aging time and calcination temperature on morphology,particle size and specific surface area of yttrium oxide was studied. The optimum process conditions were that the reaction temperature of precipitation was 93℃,concentration of feed liquid was 40 g /L,aging time was 28 h,and calcination temperature was 1400℃. Yttrium oxide with medium diameter of 61. 54μm and acicular spherical morphology was obtained under the conditions.
Research Status and Prospect of Biological Precipitation of Carbonate

Abstract:Carbonate minerals are some of the most abundant minerals on the earth.Carbonate precipitation plays an important role in many geological processes.It is a widespread phenomenon in nature that carbonate can be biologically precipitated particularly in the precipitation of calcium carbonate(CaCO3).The organisms selectively absorbed elements from surrounding environment,and assembled functional carbonate structure under strictly biological control.Moreover,the organisms induced carbonate precipitation through changing the surrounding environment.The organisms themselves could also participate in carbonate precipitation.The role and its mechanism in carbonate precipitation varied with different organisms.Here,we summarized the biological carbonate deposition and its mechanism mediated by marine plants and animals,algae organisms and bacteria organisms.The development of simulative regulation of biomineralization of CaCO3 was also discussed in this paper.Some important questions needed to be addressed in the future were proposed,and the promising application of biological precipitation of carbonate was pointed out.

Abstract:Using glycine as an additive and choosing different solution heights in the vessel, we can control the precipitation of calcium carbonate crystals on glass-clips with their polymorphs to be calcite, vaterite or aragonite. Then we tried to establish the causalities between experiment conditions and polymorphs on the aspect of nucleation energies. Qualitative analysis showed approving interpretation of results of the experiments. Further discussion summarized three ways in which additives may control polymorphs in biomineralization.

Abstract:A widely used inorganic compound in laboratory, CaCO-3/chitosan composite with high performed and potential applicable prospects, was prepared by the method of in-situ precipitation. In this method the calcium ions were added into the solution of chitosan firstly and were dispersed homogeneously to attain the uniform solution. Then the uniform solution as the CaCO-3/chitosan precursory solution was poured into a cylindrical glass mold, on the internal surface of which a chitosan membrane had been precipitated. Afterward the mold was soaked in the mixture of NaOH and Na-2CO-3 aqueous solutions. Finally through the following proceedings, the three-dimensional composite in which the particles of calcium carbonate were dispersed was achieved in the experiment. XRD were carried out to determine the presence of the calcium carbonate. SEM was preformed to investigate the distributing regularity of calcium carbonate and the size of the calcium carbonate particle. It could be seen that the particles of orbicular were distributed orbicularly on the cross section and its size was about 5_10 μm. The mechanical properties of the composite were evaluated by three-point bending test. Influence of Initial Ph on the Precipitation and Crystal Morphology of Calcium Carbonate Induced by Microbial Carbonic Anhydrase

Abstract:The dynamics of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation induced by microbial intracellular or extracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA) at initial pH 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and 8.0 were investigated through the gaseous diffusion method. The results indicated that both the intracellular and extracellular CA could promote CaCO3 precipitation. The Ca2+ ions in the enzymatic systems at initial pH 8.0 were completely deposited at 48h, which were respectively 21h, 15h and 14h earlier compared with that at initial pH 6.0, pH 6.5 and pH 7.0, indicating that higher pH favored CaCO3 precipitation in the experimental pH range, and was beneficial to the catalytic action of microbial CA on CaCO3 precipitation. In addition, XRD analysis indicated that the CaCO3 precipitates were mainly calcite crystals in the presence of microbial CA. With increasing deposition time, the crystals gradually changed from prism shape to pyramid-like or irregular polyhedral shape based on FESEM analysis.

Abstract:Through the ultrasound pre-treatment of reactant and adding the dispersant of sodium polyacrylate(PAANa) and using the chemical precipitation method, the narrow paticle-diameter nano-particle of CaCO3 have been prepared. For these nano-size particles, the characterizations of the structures, the crystal type and the components are carried out. The result of infra-red spectrum showed that a blue shift about 40cm(-1) for the peak of C = O appeared and the peak shape of it became narrow. Because of the reciprocity of the high surface energy of nano-particles, the Pi (6)(4) conjugate system existed in the CO32-, the interactions between the Ca-O bonds, the unsaturation of the surface coordinations, and the artificial ending of growth of crystal, they are the primary factors which influenced on the surface effect.

Abstract:The feasibility of preparing super-fine CaCO3 powder by an improved carbonation method was studied.The influence of gas distribution, chemical agents and CO2/N2 mixture on the size and morphology of CaCO3 was investigated. Bubbles with smaller size and gas mixture with higher CO2 concentration are favorable to the formation of super-fine CaCO3. The morphology and diameter of CaCO3 product are influenced obviously by the addition of additives such as ZnCl2, MgCl2 or EDTA .

Abstract:In order to apply precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) in the detergent industry, its ability to deposit calcium ions in hard water is an important process. In this work, the calcium ion deposition in the presence of PCC from different sources is investigated to reveal the influencing factors and mechanism of nucleation and crystal growth of CaCO3. SEM, XRD, Malvern particle size analysis, and calcium electrodes are used to evaluate the effects of PCC morphology, saturation of Ca2+, and PCC additive amount on the deposition behavior of CaCO3. Through SEM and Malvern particle size analysis, it is found that the precipitation of calcium ions is obviously accelerated by PCC acting as seeds. Moreover, calcium ions are effectively adsorbed on (211) crystal facets, thus prismatic and scalenohedral PCC crystals exhibit better adsorption performance than irregular cubic PCC ones. In addition, XRD demonstrates that PCC reduces or even eliminates the formation of crystals such as vaterite, displaying high deposition capacity under complex water conditions (slightly acidic or highly alkaline pH, low magnesium ion concentration (<0.01 M), and temperatures of 0–60 °C), forming thermodynamically stable calcite in water, which significantly controls the instability of the washing process.

Abstract:We developed the technology for the effective calcium phosphate (CP) particle precipitation on the poly(vinyl alcohol) films through a biomimetic process. The percentages of the carboxylate ion exposure and esterification reaction in the films were controlled through the citric acid surface modification or cross-linking techniques. The Ca 2+ –carboxylate ion interactions (i.e., nucleation sites) were formed and the effective precipitation on the films was observed. As a result, we successfully controlled the density and size of the precipitated CP particles on the films. It has the potential to be used as an effective CP particle precipitation technology on polymeric films.
