Abstract:An application of measurement method of sound intensity is discussed from practical engineering perspective based on experimental analysis to identify the main noise source of vehicle. The 3D sound intensity charts are plotted to find the main noise source which adversely affects interior noise of a specific vehicle at idle condition. Meanwhile, the relevant components are optimized and improved in combination with frequency spectrum analysis to reduce interior noise and improve vehicle NVH performance. The test results indicate that the technology of source intensity measurement and frequency spectrum analysis can be applied to identify the main noise source quickly, and the improvement method is presented accordingly.

Abstract:With GRAS sound intensity test device,the noise of high-pressure common rail diesel engine was measured.The 225 measurement grids were established on fuel pump,fan,exhaust side and rocker arm side.The noise of idle,maximum torque,rated speed and other conditions was measured.After processing and analyzing the measured data with STARA coustics sound intensity software,the intensity vector,equal acoustic intensity and acoustic power distribution of each measured surface were acquired.The concept of noise source point ratio was put forward and the main noise source was identified.The result shows that the main noise source of oil pump side,fan side and rocker arm side is intake manifold,oil pan and camshaft respectively.

Abstract:This paper first presents the fundamental principle of the two-microphone cross spectral method for measuring the sound intensity, and then describes a system developed for the measurement of the sound intensity. Measured results for different electrical machines, both with load and without load, operating in different acoustic environments, are discussed. The application has shown that the technique can be successfully used to directly determine the sound power levels of loaded electrical machines in an industrial acoustic environment. The measured results are within the accuracy required, even if the background noise level is high.

Abstract:Based on “two-microphone” method, a sound intensity measurement was carried out towards a vehicle four-stroke gasoline engine in a semi-anechoic room. Then the sound intensity contour maps were obtained from the measurement results. The main noise components of different frequencies on all the measurement surfaces were also picked out to construct contour maps. An investigation towards the relationship between the characteristics of contour maps and distributions of the engine compartment on space was taken; the main noise sources of the engine were identified. The results provided a creditable basis to improve the noise performance of the engine in the next phase.

Abstract:It has been a challenge in the past to accurately locate and quantify the pass-by noise source radiated by the running vehicles. A system composed of a microphone array is developed in our current work to do this work. An acoustic-holography method for moving sound sources is designed to handle the Doppler effect effectively in the time domain. The effective sound pressure distribution is reconstructed on the surface of a running vehicle. The method has achieved a high calculation efficiency and is able to quantitatively measure the sound pressure at the sound source and identify the location of the main sound source. The method is also validated by the simulation experiments and the measurement tests with known moving speakers. Finally, the engine noise, tire noise, exhaust noise and wind noise of the vehicle running at different speeds are successfully identified by this method.

Abstract:In this paper, a testing scheme is proposed, which combines the techniques of sound array and binocular vision, based on beamforming theory. By analyzing the pictures taken by 2 video cameras, the real-time location of vehicle is calculated; the vehicle moving process is divided into several time segments to conduct sound field reconstruction so that the dynamic sound field video in the course of vehicle driving is generated. The test results indicate that the main noise sources of moving vehicle can be identified accurately with this method, and the dynamic variation of vehicle noise can also be intuitively seen.

Abstract:A method based on empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and power feature extraction to locate the leak point was presented to overcome the disadvantage of location precision being low(affected by the noising and the propagation modes of sound) of direct cross-correlation method to pinpoint the leak point.This method based on data sampled by acoustic emission sensors,analyzed the direct cross-correlation affected by the noising and the propagation modes of sound,and decomposed the signal into a series of frequency bands,from which a few useful frequency bands were selected by power feature extraction,and then the leak point was determined by comparing the correlation coefficient.Simulation and experiments indicated that the method presented above eliminated the disadvantages of direct cross-correlation and improved the precision of location.
Noise source identification of internal combustion engine using sound mode technology

Abstract:A sound mode technology was proposed for exactly identifying an internal combustion engine's noise source. After the Fourier transformation of the sound intensity signals from the two microphones was performed, the imaginary parts of two sound pressure's cross spectrums were obtained, and the sound intensity frequency distribution of every measuring point was calculated. By extracting the sound intensity of every point on the measuring surface at some frequency, the sound mode at every frequency component was achieved. After the noise source of a gasoline engine was identified using the sound mode technology, the distribution of the key noise source was determined at every measuring surface, and the causative reasons inducing the sound source were analyzed. The results indicate that the sound mode technology can exactly identify the noise source distribution of the measuring surface at every frequency component, and provide significant information for the structural optimization and noise source shielding.

Abstract:Taking the respective advantage of sound intensity and sound holography methods,the sources of exterior noise of a heavy-duty truck are comprehensively identified,with the main noise sources and noise frequency ranges obtained.Then various noise control schemes are analyzed,among which the use of optimized sound absorption and insulation structure can reduce the noise by more than 2.5 dB(A)with the adverse effects on the performances of the engine and other systems of the truck within the permitted range and the cost of noise control less than 0.4% of the total cost of the truck.

Abstract:Identification and quantitative measurements of moving sound sources are foundations to understanding the mechanisms for noise generation and propagation. In addition, such measurements are an important prerequisite for developing efficient noise pollution prevention methods. Existing sound source measurement methods cannot provide quantitative measurements of complex moving sound sources due to physical limitations. A key problem is that the error caused by using a simplified model of the moving sound source to eliminate the Doppler effect is too large. A more complex time domain model of the moving sound source based on the sub-step inverse method was used to more effectively eliminate the Doppler effect to obtain lossless correction of the moving sound source signal. The method was validated against experimental data. The acoustic holography method was then used to measure and visualize the sound field of the moving sound source. This study provides further understanding of the mechanisms and characteristics of moving sound sources and expands the ability to measure high speed sound sources. The theoretical and technical results can be used to reduce noise pollution caused by high-speed vehicles.

Abstract:According to the analysis of acoustic signals and vibration signals measurement, an investigation of the noise source identification in a diesel is presented, and the noise level of the diesel is comprehended. With the sound intensity method, the major sources of the exterior radiation noise of the engine front are surveyed. The research provides the reliable basis for the engineering practice to reduce the vehicle noise level. Furthermore, the measuring data of the acoustic signals are compared by measuring noise from surface vibration, and the results are valid.

Abstract:An experimental study on the engine acoustic source identification by combining the surface vibration technique and the acoustic intensity technique was presented. A diesel engine for the passenger car was used in the experiment. The overall acoustic power level of the diesel engine was measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. The acoustic power level of the predominant noise sources of the engine was measured by means of the surface vibration technique. The acoustic power level of the front pulley was measured by the acoustic intensity method. The ranking of the noise sources was obtained on the basis of their individual contribution to the overall noise of the engine.

Abstract:Taking 16 in-vehicle noise samples acquired from 4 types of car under different conditions as evaluation objects, by means of the subjective evaluation test and the statistical analysis, a sound quality model was built to describe the subjective evaluation level by the objective psycho-acoustical parameters. It was found that the key factors affecting the in-vehicle sound quality under the steady conditions are the loudness and the sharpness. The active noise control experiments on the worst 2 noise samples were performed, and the results show that the loudness and the sharpness of the in-vehicle noise were both reduced. The improvement of the sound quality was confirmed by calculation using the established model and 2 subjective evaluation tests, the annoyance level of the sound was decreased by about 5. The active noise control is proved to be feasible and effective in the vehicle sound quality improvement.

Abstract:The interior noise samples in the assistant driver ear's position from four types of cars at different gears and velocities were selected as the evaluation objects. The subjective evaluation test of sound quality was carried out with the magnitude estimation and the paired comparison. Several primary objective psycho acoustical parameters of these samples were calculated. By way of linear correlation and the multi dimensional regression analysis, an equation between the subjective evaluation level and the objective psycho acoustical parameters was gained. The research results indicate that the vehicle interior sound quality preference under the steady operation conditions is affected by two psycho acoustical parameters: loudness and sharpness.
Cabin Noise Source-Path Identification for AD-200 Ultralight Aircraft

Abstract:A new diagnostic method based on the two microphone cross spectral acoustic intensity technique was applied to identificate the cabin noise source paths. The simulating test using a loudspeaker and an electro-mechanical shaker to simulate the airborne and structureborne noise sources was conducted to prove the confidence of the proposed method. The results show that the discrepancy between measured and separated values of total average acoustic intensity level are respectively 1.7dB(A) and 0.4dB(A) for structureborne and airborne components, which is acceptable for engineering application. The static test with engine in operation shows that the airborne noise through the rear board of cabin is the dominant contributor to cabin noise . This is a reasonable result, which gives a guide to cabin noise control treatment.

Abstract:The present paper reports a new methodology for measuring the sound power level (SWL) of tyre/road noise, using a modified Close-Proximity (CPX) trailer enclosure. Specially designed diffuser panels are implemented to cover the absorption materials on the interior walls and ceiling of the CPX enclosure to create a reverberant chamber. Through numerical simulations, the optimal reverberant chamber design, which holds the least acoustic resonance and most uniform acoustic energy distribution, is determined to guide fabrication. The SWL of a reference sound source (RSS) is determined first. The sound pressure level (SPL) distributions inside the reverberant chamber with the RSS switched on are then obtained under static conditions and road tests. The relationships between the SWL of the RSS and the SPL it produces inside reverberant chamber with various RSS inputs signals show great consistency with theory. Using the linear regression of SWL with respect to spatially averaged SPL reverberant chamber obtained in static condition, the total SWL and its spectrum at a specific vehicle speed can be deduced from the captured SPL information inside the chamber during road tests with the RSS switched off.
