Abstract:It is needed to join C/C composite to other materials since its individual use is limited. Brazing is a method to join C/C composite that has been studied most, maturest and most widely used in recent decades. The quality of a brazed joint is largely determined by the intermediate layer material. It is significant to choose filler materials reasonably. C/C composite is difficult to be wetted by common brazing filler materials. Moreover, there is a large difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between C/C composite and metals. At present, there is no brazing filler alloy exclusively recommended for commercial C/C composites and metal brazing. Usually, active elements are added into filler metals to improve the wettability of them on C/C composite surface. The existing research includes Al-based, Ag-based, Cu-based, Ti-based, Ni-based brazing filler metals, and so on. In addition, various particle reinforced composite filler materials and stress buffer metal interlayer added composite filler materials have been studied for brazing C/C composite. The summarization of the overview on the application of intermediate filler metals is made in this paper. The basic reference basis is provided for the subsequent brazing filler metals development and joint performance improvement for C/C composite brazing.

Microstructure Design of C/C Composites Through Electrochemical Corrosion for Brazing to Nb

Abstract:Surface structure of C/C composites has been regulated through electrochemical corrosion at room tem-perature to modify the residual stress and improve the joining strength when brazed to Nb.The unique crevice corrosion in C/C composites is investigated to reveal the change of corrosion depth and fiber size.The interlacing zone of carbon fiber reinforced brazing alloy replaces the reaction layer in the original joint.Joining area is increased dramatically and the continuous crack will be hindered.The interlacing zone eliminates the stress concentration and relieves the residual stress through reducing the property mismatch.All advantages contribute to the joining quality of C/C-Nb.Shear strength of C/C-Nb joint with 80 μm depth reached 37.7 MPa,which was 1.2 times higher than that of original joint.Surface structure design of C/C composites not only expands the application in structure component,but also exhibits the promising application in energy field.

Abstract:Joining between C/C composites and single crystal Ni-based superalloy is of great significance to promote their wide application in aerospace. A sound joint of them is successfully obtained by active brazing with the AgCuTi filler. Interfacial microstructure and joining mechanism of joints are systemically investigated. Effects of brazing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical strength of joints are carefully analyzed. A continuous reaction layer containing the inner fine-grain and outer coarse-grain TiC is formed adjacent to C/C composites. Surprisingly, both Ag and Cu inclusions are observed at the C/C composites interface by careful examination. Especially, Cu inclusions are first detected in this study. In contrast, intense interdiffusion is the main interaction mechanism between the DD3 and the filler. (Ni, Cu)(3)(Al, Ti) and (Cu, Ni) solid solution (s, s) layers are formed at the DD3 interface. Meanwhile, a large amount of small seed-shape AlNi2Ti phases are formed in the whole joint. The highest shear strength (similar to 36 MPa) is obtained for the joint brazed at 880 degrees C for 10 min (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Using composite filler is a very potential way to braze dissimilar material, especially braze metals with ceramics. The composite filler which is added varieties of high temperature alloy, carbon fiber and ceramic particles has a suitable coefficient of thermal expansion. The application of composite filler can release the residual stress caused by mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient in the brazing joints and improve the overall performance significantly. According to the traditional classification method of composite materials, the composite filler is divided into micron-reinforced composite filler and nano-reinforced composite filler, of which the feature and research status are discussed in this text. According to the influence of different size reinforced phases on microstructure and mechanical property of the brazing joints, nano-reinforced composite filler has more uniform and better structure compared with micron-reinforced composite filler, and higher joint strengh can be obtained by using it. However, the reinforced mechanism is still an open question, and will become the key area of the future research work.
Pre-infiltration and brazing behaviors of Cf/C composites with high temperature Ti Si eutectic alloy

Abstract:A novel method is developed to join carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (Cf/C composites) via a two-step approach using Ti14Si86 metal foil as the joining material. The infiltration behavior, joint microstructure, interface reaction, fracture characteristics and joining mechanism are investigated. The preparation of the almost compact deposit layer and the infiltration carbide can immediately heal the pores of Cf/C composites and form the gradient composite structure, which can effectively minimize the impact of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch between the outer reaction layer and the carbon matrix and avoid the excessive filler infiltration in the brazing step. The brazing process reveals that the growing SiC interface and TiSi eutectic structure in the seam also behave as a graded CTE composite structure, which is beneficial for strengthening the joint. Compared with direct brazing, this method can obtain more reliable Cf/C composites joints due to strong interfacial bonding and the gradient structure. As a result, a favorable shear strength of 26 MPa is achieved within 10 min at a brazing temperature of 1400 °C.

Abstract:Using Al-Si-Cu and Al-Si-Cu-Zn filler alloy,in the temperature range of 500570℃,the brazing technology of the carbon fibre reinforced aluminium matrix composite was investigated.The results show that component elements Si and Cu diffuse into the base metal.The infiltrated filler alloy,the aluminium base and the carbon fibre react to produce many interfacial phases like Al_4C_3,SiC and CuAl_2.The bond between the filler and the aluminium base is perfect.Using the Al-28Cu-6Si and Al-4Cu-10Si filler alloy,when brazed without pressure and flux,the shear strengths of the brazing joint are 65 and 75MPa,respectively.The shear fracture occurs at the interface between brazing alloy and base metal.

Abstract:The novel Ni-based brazing filler was used to join C/C composites. When brazing temperature increased from 1080 to 1100 °C, the wetting angle decreased from 23° to 14°, and the brazing filler had good wettability on the surface of C/C composites. The brazing seam of the brazed joint consisted of Ni(s,s) and Cr3C2 phases. As brazing temperature increased, lots of Cr3C2 phases were generated at the bonding interface, and the thick reaction layer was formed. When brazing temperature was 1120 °C, the shear strength of C/C joint reached the maximum value of 31.5 MPa. The fracture path extended in the C/C matrix close to the bonding interface.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix (C-f/C) composite and Ni base superalloy were brazed in vacuum using MBF 20 filler. By varying brazing temperatures and holding times, the effects of brazing parameters on the microstructure as well as its evolution and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The results show that the microstructural evolution of joints experiences three stages. With the rising of brazing process parameters, the dissolution of C-f/C turns strong, leading to the formation of rough composite/filler interface and the increasing of amount of Cr7C3 and MC complex metal carbides. The residual stress concentration in joint changes consequently. The maximum shear strength of the joint can reach 35 MPa (which is up to 92% of the shear strength of C-f/C substrate), 15 MPa and 9 MPa at room temperature, 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C, respectively. The fracture initiates and propagates in C-f/C composite.

Abstract:A novel Ti-Ni-Si brazing filler metal was designed and fabricated to braze the C/C composite and C/C composite, and C/C composite and TiAl intermetallic alloy at 1060 °C for 10 min. The interfacial microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated, and the enhancing mechanism of the joint strength was elucidated. The results showed that a perfect interface joint was achieved by using TiNiSi to braze the C/C composite. Ductile Ti3SiC2 carbide was formed at the interface, which is beneficial to the joint bonding effect. The direct joining between the C/C composite and TiAl alloy using TiNiSi filler metal was unsuccessful, which was attributed to the high content of intermetallic compounds and hard–brittle phases in the brazed joint. The addition of a Cu interlayer to the joint can adjust the interfacial structure and reduce the content of brittle compounds, leading to a complete connection between the C/C composite and TiAl alloy. The interfacial transition layer on the C/C composite side mainly consisted of Ti3SiC2, Ti3AlC ductile ceramic phases, and TiC phase, which enhanced the performance of the brazed joint. The average shear strength at room temperature was 18.8 MPa, with the maximum value of 23.6 MPa, and the average shear strength at 600 °C was 25.8 MPa.

Abstract:C/C composite is brazed to TiAl alloy using (Ti/Ni/Cu)f multi-foil filler.The brazing joint displayed reliable interface bonding and excellent mechanical properties under high temperature.The research showed during brazing process,low-melting-point eutectic liquid-phase structure is firstly formed through the contact reaction at the Ti/Ni interface,then complete melt and diffusion of the filler occurred afterwards with Cu element dissolving.General microstructure of the joint show as follows:C/C/TiC/Al2(Cu,Ni)Ti3C/Ti(Cu,Ni)+Al(Cu,Ni)2Ti/Al(Cu,Ni)Ti+Ti3Al/TiAl.The Ti(Cu,Ni) matrix phase and spheroidal dispersion of the Al(Cu,Ni)2Ti phase constitute the main components of the joint.A mass of fragile Ti2Ni phase caused by lower brazing temperature and shorter holding time reduced mechanical property of the joint.Higher brazing temperature and longer holding time made the interface structure of the C/C composite crack and TiC separate from the substrate,leading to a drop in shear strength of the joint.When the joint of the C/C composite and the TiAl alloy is brazing at 980 ℃ for 10 min,the shear strength reached the maximum 18 MPa at room temperature,and increased to 22 MPa at high temperature about 600 ℃.

Abstract:The high residual stress and weak interface derived from the characteristics of C f /SiC and superalloy have greatly limited the mechanical characteristics of their brazed joints. Low coefficient of thermal expansion reinforcement is introduced to reduce residual stress through reducing the thermal mismatch of joints, whereas the other properties have greatly influenced their mechanical characteristics. This study investigated the effect on the microstructural evolution and mechanical characteristics of C f /SiC-GH3536 joints through introducing WC within CuTi composite filler. The atomic structure of Fe-W-Ni-Cr-Cu multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) produced by the in-situ reaction of WC and Cr(s,s) was revealed by spherical aberration corrected transmission electron microscope. MPEA improved the load-carrying capacity of C f /SiC-GH3536 brazed joints for absorbing strain energy. Specifically, the interlocking interface between MPEA and by Cu(s,s) reduced the phase boundary mismatch compared to Cr(s,s) and Cu(s,s) in original joints. As a result, the highest joint shear strength was 74.3 MPa, 94 % stronger than that of CuTi. This research elucidates the underlying strengthening mechanisms of reinforcements in brazed joints.

Abstract:C/C composites were successfully brazed to Nb substrate using Cu75Pt25 filler metal. The typical interfacial microstructure of brazed joints was C/C composites/NbC/Nb(s, s)/Cu(s, s)/NbPt2/1.4b3Pt/Nb(s, s)/Nb. The effect of brazing temperature on the interfacial microstructure and joints properties were investigated in details. With the increase of temperature, the Nb-Pt reaction layer thickened and the thickness of brazing seam declined. The thickness of Nb(s, s) layer at C/C composites side increased gradually with the increase of temperature and then declined when brazing temperature was over 1160 degrees C. The optimal average shear strength of 26.7 MPa at room temperature and highest shear strength of 17.6 MPa at 600 degrees C were obtained when the joints were brazed at 1160 degrees C for 20 min.
Brazing C/SiC Composites and Nb with TiNiNb Active Filler Metal

Abstract:C/SiC composites and Nb were vacuum brazed with the Ti39·4Ni39·4Nb21·2 alloy being the active filler metal. The mechanical properties of the filler material, the microstructure and the strength of brazing joints were investigated. The results showed that the filler TiNiNb alloy has a tensile strength of 860 MPa, an elongation of 51% and an elastic modulus of 78 GPa. Both Ti and Nb elements in the filler reacted with C/SiC during the brazing process, and a well bonded C/SiC–Nb joint was obtained. The ductile filler metal released the thermal stress in the joint. When the brazing was performed at 1220°C for 20 min, the shear strength of brazed joints reached 149, 120 and 73 MPa at 20, 600 and 800°C respectively.

Abstract:The high temperature brazing of C/C composite and TiAl alloy was realized using BNi-2 filler metal under the condition of 1030 °C/20 min, less than 10 −3 Pa. Surface pretreatment of C/C composite was carried out to adjust the interface structure of brazed joint, to explore the method of improving joint strength. The microstructure of the interface was observed by SEM, and the phase composition was detected by EDS and XRD. The shear strength of brazed joints was tested, and the fracture behavior and joining mechanism were also investigated. During brazing, Ti, Cr, and other carbide forming elements diffused to C/C composite side, forming Cr 3 C 2 , Cr 7 C 3 , TiC and other carbides, realizing metallurgical joining between the brazing filler metal and C/C composite. The microstructure of the interface of C/C-TiAl brazed joint was: TiAl alloy → TiAl + AlNi 3 → AlNi 2 Ti → Ni(s, s) + Ti 3 Al + Ni 3 Si → Ni(s, s) + Ni 3 (Si, B) + CrB → Ni(s, s) + Ni 3 Si + TiCr 2 → (Ti, Cr)C → C/C composite. The joint form and fracture path of the brazed joint on surface pretreated C/C composite side were changed. The average room temperature shear strength of surface pretreated C/C-TiAl brazed joint was 14.8 MPa, which was about 50% higher than that of brazed joint without C/C composite surface treatment.

Abstract:A new Au-Cu-Ti filler featuring superior mechanical properties was developed to enable the brazing of a SiCf/SiC composite (CMCs) to itself and a Ni-based superalloy (GH536). The progression of the interfacial reactions was studied using a combination of thermodynamic calculations and experimental observations. It was found that the interfacial reaction was Ti-dominant at the early brazing stage and then gradually transformed to Ni-dominant with the continuous dissolution of the GH536 substrate. Thus, the typical microstructure of GH536/Ti-Ni-Cr-Fe+(Au, Cu)ss + MoNiSi/Ni-Cr-Fe-Si-C (Ni2Si + Fe2Si + Cr3C2)+(Au, Cu)ss/Ni2Si + TiC+(Au, Cu)ss/ Cr3C2+Ni2Si + TiC + Fe2Si/CMCs could be described by the following three stages: a Ti-dominated stage, full interdiffusion stage, and Ni-dominated stage. A maximum shear strength of 36 MPa was obtained for joints brazed at 1050℃ for 10 min, at which a failure occurred at the CMCs/brazing seam interface. The control of the interfacial reactions and the stress relaxation of (Au, Cu)ss contributed to the superior mechanical performance of the composite.

Abstract:Continuous carbon fiber reinforced lithium aluminosilicate glass ceramics matrix composites (C-f/LAS composites) are joined to Ti60 alloy vacuum brazed using Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu brazing alloy. The effects of the brazing temperature on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of brazed joints are investigated in details. The interfacial microstructure varies apparently with an increase of the brazing temperature. The thicknesses of the banded Ti solid solution (Ti(s, s)) and the reactive layer between C-f/LAS composites and the interlayer grow gradually. The mechanical properties of brazed joints increase firstly and then decrease with an increasing temperature. In addition, a joint that is brazed at 980 degrees C for 10 min shows the highest shear strength of similar to 38.13 MPa. At the same time, the fracture paths of brazed joints also change as the temperature increases. When the brazing temperature is 950 degrees C, the fracture position is in the TiC + ZrC + Ti2O + ZrSi2 + Ti5Si3 layer on the composite side. When the brazing temperature is 980 degrees C, the fracture position is on the side of the braze seam (Ti, Zr)(2)(Ni, Cu), Ti2O + ZrSi2 + Ti5Si3 layer, and carbon fiber in the composite material. When the brazing temperature is 990 degrees C, the fracture position is in the Ti2O + ZrSi2 + Ti5Si3 layer on the composite side and the carbon fiber in the composite material. Achieving Ultrafine Grain Strengthening Cf/SiC-GH3536 Joints Brazed with Cu-Ti-WC Composite Interlayer Via Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing

Abstract:Cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM), as a solid-phase additive manufacturing technology, exhibits enormous potential in the fabrication of metal matrix composite. The conventional preparation methods of composite filler often have some problems, such as agglomeration of reinforcements and poor fluidity, which have limited the further application of composite filler. In this study, we proposed a novel method to prepare the Cu-Ti-WC composite interlayer for brazing Cf/SiC and GH3536 using CSAM. The synergistic deposition mechanism of matrix particles and reinforcing particles in the composite interlayer was revealed. The deformation and recrystallisation of Cu and Ti particles and the crushing and tamping of WC particles achieved the deposition of the cold sprayed Cu-Ti-WC interlayer. The CSAM achieved a tight bonding of the composite filler, generating the initial TiC before reaching the brazing temperature. And the Fe-W-Ni-Cr-Cu multi-principal element alloys (MPEA) generated from the reaction between WC and Cr(s,s), and formed ultrafine grain regions (∼200 nm) with [2–1 −1 0]HCP-MPEA // [0 0 1]TiC and [-1 1 1]FCC-MPEA // [1 1 3]TiC orientation due to the hindering effect of the increased TiC. The shear strength of Cf/SiC-GH3536 joint brazed with cold sprayed Cu-Ti-WC interlayer was improved to 112.0 MPa, which is 1.5 times higher than that of Cu-Ti-WC powder filler. This study shows the great potential of CSAM in fabricating metal-based composite interlayers for brazing and aids in composite-metal joining for higher performance.
