Abstract:In this paper the theoretical methods for nanoindentation and their application scopes are presented. On the basis of experiments and the fact that the indenting load can be expressed as a quadratic polynomial, a new definition of microhardness is given in this paper. By dimension analysis it is seen that microhardness consists of two parts. The first part is a constant and independent of the indented depth. The second one is dependent of the indented depth and increases dramatically as the depth gets small.

Abstract:Nanomaterials,because of their special dimensions,reveal totally different tribological and mechanical properties compared with bulk materials.As an effective mean to characterize tribological and mechanical properties on nanometer scale,nanoindentation tests have been successfully adopted in the research of nanotribology of nanomaterials,such as single-layer/multi-layer thin films,super thin films,and nanolines/nanotubes.Many important results have been achieved concerning the measurement of hardness and elastic modulus,elastic/plastic deformation,and stress-hardening,etc.However,many problems,such as poor repeatability,difficulty in precise quantification,and lack of a uniform test standard,still remain to be settled for nanoindentation tests.It will be a significant topic for the development of nanoindentation tests to find solutions to these problems.

Abstract:This paper presents molecular dynamics simulation on nanoindentation of diamond indenter on a copper workpiece. Surface damages of the workpiece are caused in the contact detection process for ultra-precision fabrication and form measurement of surface by using a force sensor-integrated fast tool servo. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out in this paper to theoretically investigate the geometries of the damages due to the contact deformation. Taking into consideration of the holding period at the maximum indentation depth between the loading and the unloading processes, the dependence of the indentation geometry on the holding time are observed. Based on the simulation results, physical properties of the workpiece are also analyzed.

Abstract:Surface damages are caused on a workpiece by a diamond tool during the contact detection process. The contact detection process can be treated as a nanoindentation process. In order to investigate the deformation mechanism of the surface damages caused by the tool-workpiece contact, nanoindentation tests of a copper workpiece with a diamond indenter are carried out by molecular dynamics simulation. By considering the contact time between the indenter and workpiece, the dependence of the indentation shape on the holding time of tool at the maximum indentation depth are observed. In addition, the physical properties of the workpiece are also analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:Nanoindentation has become an increasingly popular method to determine the mechanical properties of both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials. Rocks are inherently heterogeneous and understanding their mechanical properties is of vital importance for relevant engineering applications. Due to its high precision and resolution in both force and displacement, nanoindentation can be utilized to extract the localized mechanical properties of individual grains. This review paper presents an overview of applications of nanoindentation techniques in various rocks, such as shale, coal, limestone, marble, sandstone and claystone. Apart from the conventional mechanical parameters, i.e., Young’s modulus and hardness, other parameters, such as fracture toughness, time-dependent creep and tensile strength can also be obtained using nanoindentation methods. Basic equations and parameters employed to obtain the above mechanical parameters are clearly explained. In addition, merits and demerits of previous nanoindentation studies are summarised and roadmap for future trends of nanoindentation in geomaterials are suggested.

Abstract:In a micro electromechanical system (MEMS) there are some elements that undergo elastic deformation under load to accomplish their functions, such as the beam in an acceleration sensor or the film in a micro-pump. The mechanical properties of solid materials are of interest as the mechanical properties have great effects on the operating performance of a micro electromechanical system. In this paper a new method, nano indentation, is introduced for the measurement of the mechanical properties of solid materials on the submicron scale and some experiments have been made on silicon which is widely used in elements fabrication of MEMS. The conclusion is that silicon has good mechanical properties at small load and they vary as the change of the depth of the indentation.

Abstract:Objective: Nanoindentation measured the bone elastic modulus,hardness and reflected the micro-mechanical properties of bone.This technology has been used widely in bone tissue microstructure research.The purpose of this article is to overview its application in bone microstructure research progress.Methods: We read the literature composed of nano-indentation technique principles,calculation and use methods and its application in bone mechanics,micro-structure,bone healing and bone cartilage research,then summaried and observied the trends and developments in the application of bone microstructure research.Results: The macro-mechanical properties of bone and micro-mechanical properties measured by nano-indentation technique may not be consistent in the research.The nano-indentation hardness can effectively reflect the degree of anisotropy of bone material.Nano-indentation technique could link the biological principles of bone healing and its gradually recovery process of mechanical properties potentially.Nanoindentation when combined with atomic force microscopy could improve the test accuracy.Conclusions: Nanoindentation technique is a important measurement of the bone surface,bone tissue of nanoscale morphology and 100-600nm dent under indentation modulus,hardness and other mechanical properties.Nano-indentation technique is a good prospect in evaluating the quality of bone tissue material.It has mature and still has much room for development.

Abstract:Accurately understanding the mechanical properties at micro/nanometer scale is of critical importance for the practical applications of micro/nano electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) materials. Micor/nanomechanical characterization methods of several current and potential MEMS/NEMS materials by using nanoindentation technique have been investigated, involving polymers, nano-structures, as well as shape memory alloys (SMA). The results show that nanoindentation technique is a powerful method to characterize the mechanical properties of these new MEMS/NEMS materials and can also provide an effective experimental tool to reveal the correlation between apparent mechanical behaviors and underlying factors.
Factors Influencing Nanoindentation Test Data

Abstract:Nanoindentation, depth-sensing indentation, involves applying a specific force-time history on a rigid indenter while continuous monitoring the displacements of the indenter into the surface. The technique is widely applied to measurements on micro/nano scale mechanical properties. The data of different depths into the surface were conducted on fused silica obtained with the MTS Nano Indneter~(○R) XP. The results indicate that the hardness and modulus values gradually increase with decreasing the depths. This paper focused on the factors influencing nanoindentation test data, such as detecting the point of surface contact, the shape and radius of the tip, natural hygroscopy and surface roughness of fused silica, and penetrating ranges of transition from elasticity to plasticity etc. It is shown that the effects of the above factors on the test data are obvious for the nano scale, and not for the micro/sub-micro scale. Therefore the reliability of test data for the nano scale should be noted.

Abstract:As a new system for determining the mechanical properties of materials, Nano Indenter II mechanical properties micro-probe (MPM) is introduced. The MPM is an indentation system controlled by computer. Its displacement accuracy of indenter can reach +/-0.04nm. Therefore, it can be used to study mechanical properties of materials in micro-scale. Because of its high accuracy of indenter displacement, it has the advantage of studying thin foil materials, ion implanted materials and surface modified materials. The major difference between the MPM and the conventional hardness tester is that the MPM can record continually the load-displacement data and then figure out the hardness and elastic modulus from the data. In this way the measurement of indent area is not needed. Therefore, the error of the measurement is avoided. The experimental principle of the MPM and the calculations for hardness and elastic modulus are stated. Its applications in materials science are demonstrated.

Abstract:The microhardness and elastic modules of the materials were measured using the Nano Indenter II, which is a new measuring system for the mechanical properties of materials on nano-scale. It can determine themicrohardness, elastic modules and other mechanical properties of materials through measuring applied load and depth under indenter tip. The results indicated that surface condition of sample such as the surface roughness affects the experimental precision.

Abstract:Nanoindentation has been widely used to evaluate and test material properties, we utilize the unloading curves of an indentation test to extract the hardness and reduced modulus of the material. As with most measured Systems, calibration is essential for limiting uncertainties and achieving repeatable measurements. The article emphasizes how to use fused quartz to calibrate the probe area function. In addition, measurements are taken at others different materials with the same area function calibrated on the fused quartz. Analysis results indicate that a universal area function may lead to a larger errors at small depth.

Abstract:The rapid developments of surface engineering make progress in the measuring techniques for mechanical properties. This paper is specially focused on introducing measuring ways and results of Nano Indenter XP system made in MTS, such as elastic modulus, hardness , fracture toughness, film thickness, microbeam and microbridge deflection, surface roughness, critical load, friction coefficient, cross profilometry. Nano hardness techniques are the advanced ways for measuring mechanical properties of material surfaces from 103nm down to l01nm. So, it may be widely applied to quality assessment in the field of surface engineering.

Abstract:The mechanical properties, deformation performance, and failure modes of cement-based materials (CBMs) largely depend on their compositions and structural characteristics at the micro/nano scales. The nanoindentation technique, as a cutting-edge testing technology, can provide the nanomechanical properties and deformation characteristics of various phases in CBMs as well as the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) characteristics. It could greatly promote the understanding of the microstructure and properties of CBMs and also serve as the basic information for the numerical simulation of CBMs from micro/nano scales. This paper systematically introduces the basic principles of nanoindentation, preparation methods of CBM test samples, selection criteria of test regimes, and processing methods of test data. Meanwhile, the research status and related achievements of nanoindentation in CBMs science and research are reviewed, including nanomechanical properties of various phases of CBMs, creep behavior, the characteristics of ITZ, and the application in numerical simulation.

Abstract:Nix and Gao established an important relation between the microindentation hardness and indentation depth. It agrees well with the microindentation experiments for the Berkovich indenter. However, it is unclear whether it holds for other indenters with different indenter angles. We use the conventional theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity established from the Taylor dislocation model to study the effect of indenter angles on the microindentation hardness. It is shown that the Nix–Gao relation between the microindentation hardness and indentation depth also holds for other indenter angles. The effect of friction is negligible for relatively flat indenters (e.g. Berkovich indenter), but may be significant for sharp indenters (e.g. cubic indenter).

Abstract:The paper reviews recent research and developments on simulated indentation tests at micron and nanometer levels. For indentation at the maximum depth of several microns or hundreds of nanometer, classical continuum plasticity framework incorporating Taylor dislocation model via strain gradient plasticity embedded in the constitutive equation may be adopted to take care of the size effect. As higher-order stress components and higher-order continuity requirements can be made redundant, only C-0 finite elements incorporating strain gradient plasticity have to be formulated. This results in the significant ease and convenience in finite element implementation requiring minimal additional computational effort and resources. Alternatively, when the indentation depth is lower at nanometer level, either a large scale molecular dynamics model or a hybrid finite element and molecular dynamics simulation has to be adopted. The article includes certain results from the former approach on nanoindentation based on combination of both Morse potential and embedded-atom model potential.
