Abstract:This paper studied the microstructure evolutions and mechanical properties of as-homogenized Mg-3Al-3Sn-1Zn (ATZ331) alloy with an initial grain size of ~106.6 mm, which was subjected to high-speed rolling (HSR) at a rolling speed of 1100 m/min. In order to improve the rollability, the intermediate annealing was carried out at 400 oC for 10 min between each pass. The microstructure evolution of ATZ331 during HSR was investigated. Firstly, high dislocation density generated during HSR. Then, the dislocation rearranged and incorporated as the subgrain boundaries (sub-GBs), leading to a reduction of grain size with an increase in rolling pass. The fine and uniform microstructure (1.1 μm) of ATZ331 was achieved after the sixth pass, with the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation to failure (FE) of 319 MPa, 360 MPa, and 5.9%, respectively. For improving the ductility, the low temperature short time annealing was explored after HSR, which have been proved enough to complete sufficient static recrystallization (SRX). The annealing temperatures were chosen to range from 180 oC to 240 oC and the annealing time was constant (5 min). The results showed that the optimum annealing temperature is 200 oC leading to fine average grain size (1.7 μm). The SRX mechanism of ATZ331 alloy after HSR has been certified as the classical recovery followed by recrystallization. Namely, subgrains was formed by the realignment and absorption of the accumulated dislocations, subsequently, the low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) migrated and transformed to high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). Furthermore, the YS, the UTS, and the FE of ATZ331 are 253 MPa, 313 MPa, and 9.8%, respectively.
