Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:GHz pulsed thulium-doped fiber laser with stabilized repetition rate can enable a wide range of applications. By employing regenerative mode-locking and cavity stabilization technique, we have for the first time demonstrated a 10 GHz polarization-maintaining thulium-doped fiber laser, which has a long-term repetition-rate stabilization and picosecond timing-jitter. In our experiment, a RF circuitry is designed to extract the 10 GHz longitudinal clock signal so that stable regenerative mode-locking is achieved. A piezo actuator-based phase-lock-loop is used to lock the regeneratively mode-locked pulses to a local reference synthesizer. The regeneratively mode-locked pulses with picosecond pulse width exhibit a high super-mode suppression ratio of 60 dB. In addition, the repetition rate of the laser shows good long-term stability with a variation of 8 Hz in 8 hours, corresponding to a cavity free spectral range fluctuation of less than 16 mHz. Meanwhile, the Allan deviation of the stabilized 10 GHz regeneratively mode-locked pulses is measured to be as low as 2 x 10(-12) over 1000 s average time, which is only limited by the stability of the reference synthesizer. Such an ultra-stable 10 GHz pulsed thulium fiber laser may find potential application in 2 mu m optical communication, material processing and spectroscopy. All-fiber GHz few-cycle pulse generation at 2 µm

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber GHz mode-locked laser system with few-cycle duration operating at 2 µm. Based on a dispersion-managed mode-locked oscillator, a multi-stage fiber amplifier, and a nonlinear pulse compressor, the laser system can deliver watt-level few-cycle pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 1.041 GHz. This 2-µm pulsed laser offers outstanding performance metrics, including a pulse duration of 33 fs (corresponding to ∼5 optical cycles) and an average power of 4.17 W. Moreover, the all-fiber laser system exhibits excellent power stability, and the integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) is only 0.052% (10 Hz-1 MHz). It is anticipated that this new, to the best of our knowledge, laser source is promising for frontier applications, including coherent supercontinuum generation, nonlinear frequency conversion, and laser-material interaction.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:Abstract Mode-locked fiber lasers can generate short pulses with a high repetition rate. It can be used in nonlinear optical imaging, photo-communication and other fields. Obtaining narrow pulses with high repetition frequency has become a hot research topic. In this article, we demonstrate a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser, which is a regeneratively mode-locked erbium fiber laser operating at 10 GHz, incorporating a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror to generate a 1.9 ps pulse sequence. This all-fiber laser with a high-repetition-rate and short pulses has the advantages of high stability and self-starting, which has a wide range of applications.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:We demonstrated the first 1.2 GHz nonlinear polarization rotation stretched-pulse mode-locked Yb laser with a compact design and innovative components. With a compact Faraday rotation angle has been used in NPR mode-locked lasers, and we find that incomplete isolation of backward light does not hinder self-starting. This laser directly outputs sub-40 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth exceeding 70 nm, achieving over 1 W of average output power. The laser serves as a seed source, generating a supercontinuum over one octave-spanning range without external amplification or compression.

Abstract:Wavelength tunable and ultra stable pulse generation at 10GHz is experimentally demonstrated using a non-PM, regeneratively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Less than 2.0 ps, nearly transform-limited, sech2-shaped pulses are directly generated with supermode noise suppression ratio over 70dB and RMS timing jitter value less than 162 fs. Dispersion management has been exploited in order to obtain the shortest pulse duration at 1.1ps. The mechanisms for the super-mode noise suppression are also discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first 1 GHz femtosecond erbium-doped fiber ring laser mode locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). The laser delivers a maximum average output power of 228 mW, correspondingly to single pulse energy of 0.228 nJ. The pulse spectral bandwidth is 32 nm, and the direct output pulse duration is 81.8 fs without extra-cavity compression. The integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) and the residual root mean square phase noise are measured to be 0.059% and 35 mrad (ranging from 10 Hz to 1 MHz), respectively. The result indicates that the high repetition rate lasers can operate without a significant increase in noise. This laser is an ideal source as a compact and relatively high pulse energy and short pulse at this repetition rate and shows great potential for optical frequency combs and other applications around 1560 nm wavelength.

Abstract:A stabilized 10-GHz actively mode-locked fiber ring laser constructed with non-polarization-maintained fiber was reported, whose long term stabilization was achieved by synchronous modulation technology based on an error signal extraction and procession circuit. Its output pulses could maintain over 8 hours with the pulse width of about 11 ps and the spectrum width of about 0.37 nm; in the meanwhile the output power and the center wavelength of the output pulse still kept stable at 1.6 mW and 1,550.3 nm respectively. Its output pulses were additionally compressed to 2 ps by high order soliton effect.

Abstract:Light-matter interaction can be strongly enhanced in tiny core fibers, and it holds significant potential for stable harmonic mode-locking at gigahertz and a higher repetition rate. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a GHz harmonic mode-locked fiber laser based on a microfiber-assisted nonlinear multimode interference (NL-MMI), which is achieved by the enhanced mode-filtering of nonlinear self-imaging in multimode fiber with a waist diameter of 12 μ m. A stable mode-locked is achieved with a repetition rate of 1.26 GHz at 1560.15 nm, corresponding to the 22nd harmonic of the fundamental frequency. Our results provide new insight into implementing high repetition frequency mode-locking fiber lasers.

Abstract:Three-micrometer mid-infrared (MIR) femtosecond pulse sources with a high repetition rate (HRR) have potential applications in a number of fields such as biological imaging, optical frequency combs, and gas detection. In this paper, by optimizing the fiber length and the cavity structure, we demonstrated a highly stable, self-starting mode-locked fluoride fiber laser (MLFFL) with a fundamental repetition rate of ∼165 MHz and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 90 dB. As far as we know, this stands as the highest fundamental repetition rate ever acquired directly from an ultrafast MLFFL in the >2.5 µm MIR region. Stable 352-fs pulses at 2795 nm with an average output power of 392 mW and a low integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) of 0.018% [10 Hz, 10 MHz] were generated. The root mean square (RMS) power fluctuation is 0.17% over 2 h, which indicates excellent oscillator stability. This high-performance laser offers a practicable scheme both for scaling the repetition frequency in MIR MLFFLs and high-precision ultrafast applications at longer wavelengths.

Abstract:A robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) passively mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser is demonstrated based on the biased nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM). With a π/2 nonreciprocal free-space phase shifter, stable single pulse mode locking can be obtained at the central wavelength of 1565.7 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 24.6 nm in the soliton regime. The repetition rate of the pulse train is 98.13 MHz. The direct output pulse duration is 109 fs, which is nearly transform-limited. After the intracavity dispersion management, the robust self-started mode-locking in the stretched-pulse regime is realized at 1564 nm, and the 3 dB spectral bandwidth reaches up to 78 nm. The repetition rate of the pulse train is 199.6 MHz. In particular, the direct output pulse width is only 77 fs with a low integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) of only 0.0044% (integrated from 1 Hz to 1 MHz). To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse width directly from the all-PM NALM laser oscillator.

Abstract:We demonstrate a GHz repetition rate mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser with low noise. Based on a home-made Tm3+-doped barium gallo-germanate fiber with reduced dispersion, a broad optical spectrum of mode-locking is achieved, and its amplified spontaneous emission quantum-limited timing jitter is largely suppressed. Besides, we carefully investigate the influence of the intracavity pump strength on the noise performance of the mode-locked pulses and find that manipulating the intracavity pump power can be an effective method for optimizing the timing jitter and relative intensity noise (RIN). Particularly, RIN, which originated from the relaxation oscillation, can be effectively suppressed by 33 dB at offset frequencies of >1 MHz. The integrated timing jitter and RIN are only 7.9 fs (10 kHz-10 MHz) and 0.05% (10 Hz-10 MHz), respectively.

Abstract:We report a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser at 2.8 µm based on a large-mode-area Er:ZBLAN fiber. Reliable self-starting mode-locking is achieved via the combination of nonlinear polarization rotation and a semiconductor saturable absorber. Stable mode-locked pulses with a pulse energy of 9.4 nJ and a pulse duration of 325 fs are generated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy directly generated from a femtosecond mode-locked fluoride fiber laser (MLFFL) to date. The measured M2 factors are below 1.13, indicating a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. Demonstration of this laser provides a feasible scheme for the pulse energy scaling of mid-infrared MLFFLs. Moreover, a peculiar multi-soliton mode-locking state is also observed, in which the time interval between the solitons varies irregularly from tens of picoseconds to several nanoseconds.
