Abstract:A high repetition-rate actively mode-locked thulium fiber laser is demonstrated where an electro-optic lithium niobate phase modulator is used to synchronize the longitudinal modes in the cavity. The repetition rate of the actively mode-locked laser is tunable from 14.6 MHz to 19 GHz, where the 19 GHz pulses exhibit a super-mode suppression ratio of 46 dB. Furthermore, the output pulse width could be manipulated through finely controlling the detuning frequency or repetition rate. We have also experimentally observed rational harmonic mode-locking in the laser and obtained 14 GHz and 21 GHz repetition rate pulses using a 7 GHz modulating signal. To the best of our knowledge, we have improved the repetition-rate of actively mode-locked thulium fiber laser by more than one order of magnitude. Such a high repetition source can be readily synchronized to a master clock, which makes it very suitable for high speed optical data processing, communication and remote sensing.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber GHz mode-locked laser system with few-cycle duration operating at 2 µm. Based on a dispersion-managed mode-locked oscillator, a multi-stage fiber amplifier, and a nonlinear pulse compressor, the laser system can deliver watt-level few-cycle pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 1.041 GHz. This 2-µm pulsed laser offers outstanding performance metrics, including a pulse duration of 33 fs (corresponding to ∼5 optical cycles) and an average power of 4.17 W. Moreover, the all-fiber laser system exhibits excellent power stability, and the integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) is only 0.052% (10 Hz-1 MHz). It is anticipated that this new, to the best of our knowledge, laser source is promising for frontier applications, including coherent supercontinuum generation, nonlinear frequency conversion, and laser-material interaction.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a mode-locked thulium/holmium doped fiber laser using carbon nanotubes as the saturable absorber. Combined with dispersion management, 250 fs pulse width and 1.58 nJ energy pulses, with a bandwidth tunable from 40-62 nm, were obtained directly from the fiber oscillator. Wide spectral and high energy pulses from mode-locked thulium/holmium co-doped fiber laser are likely to be further compressed to sub 100 fs.

Abstract:GHz pulsed thulium-doped fiber laser with stabilized repetition rate can enable a wide range of applications. By employing regenerative mode-locking and cavity stabilization technique, we have for the first time demonstrated a 10 GHz polarization-maintaining thulium-doped fiber laser, which has a long-term repetition-rate stabilization and picosecond timing-jitter. In our experiment, a RF circuitry is designed to extract the 10 GHz longitudinal clock signal so that stable regenerative mode-locking is achieved. A piezo actuator-based phase-lock-loop is used to lock the regeneratively mode-locked pulses to a local reference synthesizer. The regeneratively mode-locked pulses with picosecond pulse width exhibit a high super-mode suppression ratio of 60 dB. In addition, the repetition rate of the laser shows good long-term stability with a variation of 8 Hz in 8 hours, corresponding to a cavity free spectral range fluctuation of less than 16 mHz. Meanwhile, the Allan deviation of the stabilized 10 GHz regeneratively mode-locked pulses is measured to be as low as 2 x 10(-12) over 1000 s average time, which is only limited by the stability of the reference synthesizer. Such an ultra-stable 10 GHz pulsed thulium fiber laser may find potential application in 2 mu m optical communication, material processing and spectroscopy. Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a wavelength-tunable passively mode-locked all-fiber laser at 1.5 μm wavelength by using an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, a fiber-pigtailed semiconductor saturable absorber mirror, and a tunable birefringence Sagnac filter. In our work, by properly setting the polarization state of the propagating light in the birefringence Sagnac filter, the mode-locked lasing wavelength can be continuously tuned from 1544.1 to 1560.8 nm, corresponding to a tuning range of 16.7 nm. At a central wavelength of 1548.5 nm, the fiber laser delivers pulses as short as 713.2 fs with a repetition rate of 4.65 MHz, a 3 dB bandwidth of 5.7 nm, and an average output power of 4.86 mW. Our results show that such a mode-locked all-fiber laser has great potential in applications in nonlinear optics at the 1.5 μm band.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and efficient femtosecond laser operating at ~950 nm by directly frequency-doubling of a mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser. The laser is based on a highly compact architecture, with a dispersion-managed oscillator together with only one-step frequency conversion. The output pulse width is ~270 fs, with a repetition rate of 22.1 MHz and a pulse energy of 12.9 nJ. It is believed that the greatly simplified setup makes the current laser well suited for two-photon microscopy and other biomedical and clinical applications.

Abstract:Based mainly on the distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) short linear cavity with a 1.6-cm-long heavily Tm3+-doped germanate glass fiber and semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), a compact passively Q-switched single-frequency fiber laser at around 1950 nm is demonstrated experimentally. By comparing pulse characters of Q-switched operations fulfilled via SESAMs with different parameters, a stable output pulse is optimized to deliver a maximum average power of 22.2 mW, a peak power of 0.67 W, and an optical signal-to-noise ratio over 61 dB. Moreover, the repetition rate of the output pulse can be tuned from 92 to 520 kHz with a narrowest pulse width of 64 ns. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a 2.0 µm passively Q-switched single-frequency DBR Tm3+-doped fiber laser has been realized, and it shows great potential application in remote sensing, biomedical science, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:A thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) with a dual-active cavity and a directly linked three-coupler triple-ring filter is designed and demonstrated. Its operational principle is analyzed, and a corresponding experimental setup is built. Eleven single-wavelength laser outputs with a single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output near 2 μm are obtained. The laser output covers a wavelength range from 1933.95 nm to 1971.76 nm, with a continuous switchable output range of 37.81 nm and a minimum center wavelength interval of 0.22 nm. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the output laser within the tuning range is >48.53 dB, and its maximum OSNR is 70.24 dB. The minimum wavelength fluctuation is 0.03 nm, and the power fluctuation is between 0.15 and 2.61 dB. A single wavelength with a center wavelength of 1933.95 nm is monitored for 75 min, and the radio-frequency spectrum is scanned 27 times within the frequency range of 0 to 400 MHz. The results demonstrate that the TDFL can operate continuously and stably in an SLM state. The linewidth and linewidth fluctuation of the TDFL are measured, and the minimum linewidth, corresponding to a measurement time of 0.001 s, is 65.14 kHz. The experimental results show that the proposed TDFL has a high OSNR and excellent wavelength-switching ability, and its SLM operation is very stable.

Abstract:Three-micrometer mid-infrared (MIR) femtosecond pulse sources with a high repetition rate (HRR) have potential applications in a number of fields such as biological imaging, optical frequency combs, and gas detection. In this paper, by optimizing the fiber length and the cavity structure, we demonstrated a highly stable, self-starting mode-locked fluoride fiber laser (MLFFL) with a fundamental repetition rate of ∼165 MHz and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 90 dB. As far as we know, this stands as the highest fundamental repetition rate ever acquired directly from an ultrafast MLFFL in the >2.5 µm MIR region. Stable 352-fs pulses at 2795 nm with an average output power of 392 mW and a low integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) of 0.018% [10 Hz, 10 MHz] were generated. The root mean square (RMS) power fluctuation is 0.17% over 2 h, which indicates excellent oscillator stability. This high-performance laser offers a practicable scheme both for scaling the repetition frequency in MIR MLFFLs and high-precision ultrafast applications at longer wavelengths.

Abstract:We demonstrated a mode-locked thulium/holmium (Tm/Ho) fiber laser continuously tunable across 200 nm (from 1860 nm to 2060 nm), which to the best of our knowledge represents the widest tuning range ever achieved for a passively mode-locked fiber laser oscillator. The combined use of a broadband carbon nanotube (CNT) saturable absorber and a diffraction grating mirror ensures ultra-broad tuning range, superb stability and repeatability, and makes the demonstrated laser a highly practical source for spectroscopy, imaging and optical communications. The laser emits <5 ps pulses with an optical spectral bandwidth of ∼3 nm across the full tuning range. Our results indicate that carbon nanotubes can be an excellent saturable absorber for achieving gain-bandwidth-limited tunable operation for 2 μ m thulium fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this paper a single frequency thulium doped silica fiber(TDF) laser operating above 2 μm based on cascaded single-mode-multimode-single-mode(SMS) structures incorporating a Sagnac loop was experimentally demonstrated. Based on the theoretical analysis of the transmission properties of the SMS fiber structure and mode selection characteristic of Sagnac loop, two cascaded SMS fiber devices with same multimode fiber lengths around 3.24 cm were used in our laser system to select the specific lasing wavelength above 2 μm as well as enhancing the suppression of lasing around 1900 nm. And 6.5 m unpumped TDF were employed in Sagnac loop as saturable absorber to achieve single frequency operation. Single-longitudinal-mode operation of the fiber laser at 2004.05 nm has been achieved with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) more than 60dB.

Abstract:Single-frequency laser operation near 2 microm has been demonstrated in an all-fiber short-cavity (2-6 cm) distributed feedback laser cavity using both cladding- and core-pump configurations in a newly developed heavily Tm-doped multicomponent silicate glass fiber. Using a single-mode Er-doped fiber laser at 1575 nm as a core-pump source, a 2-cm-long distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser delivers single-frequency output at 1950 nm with laser linewidth less than 3 kHz, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the narrowest linewidth demonstrated to date from any 2 microm single-frequency laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact ultrafast source centered at 850 nm with >200 nm bandwidth (full width at half-maximum) based on a 3 GHz Yb-fiber master-oscillator-power-amplifier system. The output pulses (with up to 13 W average power) from the laser system are coupled into short (<50 mm) pieces of photonic crystal fibers to excite broadband fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation; the resulting broad phase-matching bandwidth due to short fiber length produces an upconverted spectrum spanning in the wavelength range of 750-950 nm with average power of 94, 184, and 380 mW for fiber length of 28, 37, and 48 mm, respectively. The spectrum generated from the 37 mm fiber is then dechirped by eight double-chirped mirrors, leading to compressed pulses ~14 fs in duration. Such an ultrafast source is a promising substitute of multigigahertz mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers for applications in optical frequency metrology and multiphoton coherent microscopy.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.
