Abstract:Precipitation products in an Al-10Mg-0.5Ag (wt%) alloy aged isothermally in the range 160-240 degrees C have been studied using transmission electron microscopy. In the early stages of ageing (0.5h at 240 degrees C), the microstructures contain a uniform distribution of fine-scale (similar to 20 nm), faceted particles, which give rise to a significant increase in hardness. Electron microdiffraction patterns suggest that such particles have a structure compatible with icosahedral point symmetry. This quasicrystalline phase is metastable and is replaced in microstructures exhibiting maximum hardness (2h at 240 degrees C) by a uniform, fine-scale distribution of crystalline T phase Mg-32(Al,Ag)(49). The T phase forms as faceted rods parallel to < 110 >(alpha) directions of the alpha-A] matrix and exhibits an orientation relationship with the a that is of the form (010)T parallel to(11(1) over bar)(alpha) and [001](T)parallel to[1(1) over bar 0](alpha).
