Abstract:In present study, the nanoscale assignment behavior of strain and stress state at the interface of T2-Al6CuLi3/α-Al matrix is investigated by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) combined with Geometric phase analysis (GPA) method. The obtained results reveal the toughening effect of the icosahedral quasicrystalline phase T2-Al6CuLi3 on cast Al-Li alloys. It is found that the precipitation of T2-Al6CuLi3 phase consumes Li atoms in competition with δ'-Al3Li phase during the aging process, which damages yield stress (YS) and Young's modulus of alloy. Compared with Base alloy, the yield stress and Young's modulus of the Quasicrystalline alloy decrease 2.39% and 22.26%, respectively. A flat and smooth interface morphology of T2-Al6CuLi3/α-Al matrix is observed in high-resolution images. Furthermore, the distribution state of the nanoscale strain shows that the matrix with higher ductility suffered most strain when the sample is subjected to the applied load. Meanwhile, the quasicrystalline phase T2 compresses during the precipitation process, which suppresses the crack initiation and propagation along the interface of the T2-Al6CuLi3/α-Al matrix. The assignment behavior of strain contributes to the enhancement of ductility and toughness of the alloy, partially alleviating the intergranular brittle fracture tendency which is common in Al-Li alloys. It is observed that the existence of quasicrystalline phases improves the elongation (EL) and product of strength and ductility (PSD) by 62.5% and more than five times without the loss of the ultimate tensile stress (UTS). Therefore, the present study provides a promising reference for the design of the quasicrystal-reinforced cast Al-Li alloys.
