Abstract:The influence of transparent conductive zinc oxide films as effective anodes is examined in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):[6, 6]-phenyl-C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) system. Two transparent conductive zinc oxide films, ZnO doped with Ga and Al, with different work function and morphology were introduced. By modifying the zinc oxide films with solution-processed MoO3 interlayers, devices presented high performance comparable to that of a solar cell with a conventional indium tin oxide anode. Selective contact of each electrode is essential to suppress carrier combination, which results in increased current-density and fill factor. Open-circuit voltage (V-oc) depends largely on the relative energy levels of the donor and acceptor, regardless of work function and morphology of the used anodes. An analysis using equivalent-circuit methods reveals that V-oc is proportional to the logarithm of the ratio of the photocurrent density divided by the reverse saturation current density.
