Abstract:Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) solid-state electrolyte is considered one of the most promising solid-state electrolyte because of their excellent electrochemical and thermal stability. Even though, the low conductivity of NZSP solid-state electrolytes hinders practical application. Therefore, an anions/cations co-assisting strategy is proposed by introducing the Zn2+ and F−. The influence of adding different amounts of Zn2+ and F− on the Na+ conductivity of NZSP was investigated computationally and experimentally. The Zn2+/F− co-assisting (Na3.3Zr1.85Zn0.15Si2PO12) solid-state electrolyte exhibits the ionic conductivity of 0.722 mS cm−1 at 30 °C, and the activation energy of ∼0.237 eV. Its applicability in a solid-state battery is tested, and the assembled Na/Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) battery exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance of 98.4% capacity retention after being cycled at 0.5 C. Moreover, DFT calculations also have been used to demonstrate the effect of doping on the crystal structure and space migration energy barrier. This research provides new ideas for improving the electrochemical properties of inorganic solid electrolytes.

Abstract:NASICON-type material Na 1+ x Zr 2 Si x P 3− x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) is considered to be one of the most promising solid-state electrolytes that can be applied in all-solid-state sodium batteries (SSNBs). However, further increasing the ionic conductivity of Na 1+ x Zr 2 Si x P 3− x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) to obtain higher performance electrolyte materials is still a challenge for its practical application. Herein, the Na 3.4 Zr 2 Si 2.4 P 0.6 O 12 (NZSP) powder is prepared by the solution-assisted solid-state reaction (SA-SSR), and solid-state electrolytes with excellent electrochemical properties are obtained by doping with NaF as a sintering aid. With the increase of NaF doping, the crystal structure of NZSP is changed as well as a slight excess of Na + may increase the bottleneck size of the crystal, so that it enhances the migration ability of Na + in the crystal. Also, NaF as a sintering aid lowers the sintering temperature, increases the densities and improves the effective contact between crystals, which reduces the grain boundary impedance of NZSP. However, the excessive NaF dopant leads to the generation of microcracks decreasing the Na + conducting and mechanical properties of solid-state electrolytes. Using this simple and low-cost strategy of NaF doping, NZSP-0.3NaF achieves an excellent conductivity of 4.98 mS cm −1 with unexpectedly low activation energy of 0.227 eV. Therefore, this composition is one of the few electrolytes with high conductivity reported so far and is a competitive option for solid-state sodium batteries.

Abstract:The urgent need for high-performance sodium batteries has drawn great attention to the development of novel solid-state electrolyte systems. However, it is still a great challenge to obtain excellent ionic conductivity and interfacial stability performance for most solid-state electrolytes. In this study, a new NASICON-type solid-state electrolyte Na 3.1+x Zr 2−x Sc x Si 2.1 P 0.9 O 12 (donated as NZSSP, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3) was successfully prepared by solid-phase method. Due to the aliovalent substitution of Sc 3+ /Si 4+ , the phase transition or unwanted rhombohedral phase is effectively suppressed, the Na + transport channel bottlenecks are greatly enlarged, and the concentration of Na + is largely increased, giving rise to the significant improvement of the ionic conductivity and stability of NZSSP solid-state electrolyte. The Na 3.35 Zr 1.75 Sc 0.25 Si 2.1 P 0.9 O 12 solid-state electrolyte has an ultra-high ionic conductivity of 4.92 mS cm −1 at room temperature. Meanwhile, it shows an excellent sodium plating/stripping stability by the optimization of the Na + transport channel. The critical current density of the Na//Na 3.35 Zr 1.75 Sc 0.25 Si 2.1 P 0.9 O 12 //Na symmetric battery is achieved up to 1.0 mA cm −2 , and it can stably cycle for nearly 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 or 1000 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 at room temperature. A detailed analysis of these aliovalent dual element substitution samples has been performed, and the mechanism of the conductivity enhancement is discussed systematically. This study can provide a feasible method to improve the ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability of NZSP materials and paves a way for the application of all-solid-state sodium batteries.

Abstract:Highlights • The ionic conductivity of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 was improved by the doping of Fe 3+ . • The interfacial resistance between NZSP and Na metal anode was reduced by Fe 2 O 3 . • The suppressed dendrite growth and enhanced interface stability can be achieved. • The solid-state symmetrical and full cells exhibit excellent cycling stability. NASICON-structured Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP) has been considered as one of the ideal electrolytes for all-solid-state sodium metal batteries (ASSSB). However, the practical application of NZSP-based ASSSB is hindered by the low ionic conductivity and large interfacial resistance caused by the poor contact between NZSP and Na metal. Herein, the introduction of Fe 2 O 3 not only improves ionic conductivity and reduces activation energy by the doping of Fe 3+ in the crystal structure of NZSP, but also reduces the interfacial resistance and enhances interface stability between NZSP and Na metal anode. The synergistic effects significantly enhance the cycling stability, rate capability, and critical current density of the symmetrical solid-state cells. The interfacial reaction mechanism indicates that Fe 3+ in the interface is reduced Fe 2+ by Na anode, which effectively even the electric-filed distribution and suppresses the dendrite growth. Consequently, the symmetric solid-state cells exhibit stable cycling performance for 1500 h at 0.1 mA·cm −1 /0.1 mA·h·cm −1 and over 900 h at 0.2 mA·cm −1 /0.2 mA·h·cm −1 . The Na|NZSP-0.075%Fe 2 O 3 |Na 2 FePO 4 F solid-state full cells display high capacity retention of 94.2 % after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The stable interface of NZSP/Na and improved ionic conductivity contribute to excellent electrochemical performance, which accelerates the practical application of ASSSB. Abstract:The solid‐state electrolyte (SSE) in solid‐state battery acts as an electrons' barrier and an ions' bridge between the two electrodes. As SSE does not store the mobile ions, it is necessary to achieve a thin SSE to reduce the internal resistance and to enhance the energy density. In this work, a thin NASICON SSE, with a stoichiometry of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (or NZSP), is fabricated by the tape‐casting method and its thickness can be easily controlled by the gap between substrate and scraper. The areal specific resistance and the flexural strength increases with the electrolyte thickness. A solid‐state sodium metal battery with 86 μm thick NZSP exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 73 – 78 mAh g−1 with a redox potential of 3.4 V at 0.2 C. This work presents the importance of electrolyte thickness to reduce internal resistance and to achieve a high energy density for sodium battery.

Abstract:Solid-state sodium-ion batteries have attracted significant attention due to their rich resources, high safety, and high energy density. However, the lower ionic conductivity and inferior interfacial contact between solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and electrodes limit their practical applications. Herein, polyvinylideneuoride- co -hexauoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) membrane is selected and a novel sandwiched composite PVDF-HFP/Na 2.5 Zr 1.95 Ce 0.05 Si 2.2 P 0.8 O 11.3 F 0.7 /PVDF-HFP (G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G) SSEs is well designed. The ionic conductivity of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 is enhanced by Ce 4+ /F − co-doping. The effects of Ce 4+ and F − doping on the crystal structure, density, and ionic conductivity for Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 are well investigated. The optimal NZC0.05SPF0.7 delivers a high ionic conductivity of 1.39 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 25 °C. Moreover, the PVDF-HFP membrane can significantly enhance the interface compatibility between NZC0.05SPF0.7 and electrodes. The as-prepared G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G exhibits a large ionic conductivity of 1.07 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 25 °C, wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.5 V, high critical current density of 1.2 A cm −2 , and stable Na plating/stripping over 600 h at 0.3 A cm −2 . The solid-state Na 0.67 Mn 0.47 Ni 0.33 Ti 0.2 O 2 /G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G/Na battery delivers a remarkable cycling stability and rate capability at 25 °C, indicating that the as-prepared G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G has a promising application for solid-state SIBs. This study demonstrates an effective strategy to develop advanced solid-state electrolytes for solid-state SIBs.

Abstract:The growing demand for energy storage systems has sparked a race to build inexpensive and safer rechargeable batteries. All-solid-state sodium (Na)-ion batteries are a competitive alternative to their lithium (Li) analogs due to the lower cost of Na resources. The Na SuperIonic CONductors Na 1+ x Zr 2 Si x P 3− x O 12 0 ≤ x ≤ 3 (NZSP) are widely studied as solid electrolytes. However, synthesized NZSPs always contain monoclinic ZrO 2 as the main impurity phase, which may lead to a lower Na-ion ionic conductivity within the solid-electrolyte layer. Here, we synthesize zirconia-free NZSP by engineering the quantity of zirconium (Zr) precursors. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory simulations reveal zirconia-free NZSP. Impedance spectroscopy measurement of zirconia-free NZSP reveals an impressive total ionic conductivity of ∼3.49 mS cm −1 with a bulk conductivity of ∼10.05 mS cm −1 at room temperature, making it an excellent Na-ion conductor for all-solid-state batteries. Battery tests of symmetric cells confirm that zirconia-free NZSP electrolyte provides significantly improved perfomance. These results pave the way towards the synthesis optimization of impurity-free complex solid-electrolytes, which are important if solid-state batteries are to be commercialized.

Abstract:Solid-state sodium metal batteries using non-flammable solid-state electrolytes are recognized as next-generation energy storage technology in view of their merits of high safety and low cost. However, the lower ion conductivity (below the application requirements of 10−3 S cm−1) and interface issues that exist in electrolytes/electrodes for most solid-state electrolytes hinder their practical application. In this paper, NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) electrolytes with enhanced ion conductivity are synthesized by the Bi2O3-assisted sintering method. The influence of the Bi2O3 sintering agent content on the crystalline phase, microstructure, density and ion conductivity as well as the electrochemical performances applied in batteries for the obtained NZSP electrolytes are investigated in detail. With the presence of Bi2O3, the formed Na3Bi(PO4)2 impurity increased the Si/P ratio in the NASICON structure with higher Na+ occupancy, then enhanced the ionic conductivity to a level of 1.27 × 10−3 S cm−1. Unfortunately, the Bi2O3-assisted sintered NZSP shows a degradation in the cycling stability when applied to solid-state sodium batteries because of the decreased interfacial stability with Na anodes. The formation of a Bi-Na alloy during cycling might be conducive to Na dendrite growth in electrolytes, degrading the cycling performance. This work presents a facial method to improve the ion conductivity of NASICON-type electrolytes and gives insight into the interface issues of solid-state sodium metal batteries.

Abstract:Na-ion batteries using traditional liquid electrolytes face comparable challenges due to the instability and unsafety of liquid electrolytes. NASICON-type of solid electrolytes (NZSP) are promising for replacing the liquid electrolytes because of their outstanding ionic conductivity and high thermal stability. Nevertheless, the required high sintering temperature (1200 ∼ 1300 °C) with long duration in solid-state synthesis may arouse the abnormal grain growth and the volatilization of materials at the grain boundaries in NZSP. Herein, novel Cu-doped Na 3+2x Zr 2−x Cu x Si 2 PO 12 (xCu-NZSP, x=0.02-0.1) solid electrolytes are designed and synthesized via solid state reaction. The Cu doping can increase the concentration of Na + carriers in the crystalline structure and reduce the sintering temperature, which results in enhanced ionic conductivity and decreased grain boundaries. The optimal 0.06Cu-NZSP possesses the highest ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and stable polarization voltage due to its enhanced densification and regulated the grain size. Furthermore, the interface state between 0.06Cu-NZSP and Na metal was analyzed by the x-ray powder diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The solid-state Na|0.06Cu-NZSP|Na 0.67 Mn 0.47 Ni 0.33 Ti 0.2 O 2 Na-ion batteries remains a high capacity retention of 98.76% at 0.5 C after 100 cycles at 60 °C, indicating great potential of the novel 0.06Cu-NZSP in practical applications.

Si3N4-Assisted Densification Sintering of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 Ceramic Electrolyte toward Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The solid-state metal battery with solid-state electrolytes has been considered the next generation of energy storage technology owing to its superior safety and high energy density. But, unfavorable ionic conductivity and interfacial problems make it difficult to widely use in practice. In this work, Si3N4 was rationally introduced into the NASICON matrix as a sintering aid, and the influence of Si3N4 on the crystal phase, microstructure, electrochemical and electrical performance of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) ceramic was systematically studied. The results demonstrate that the introduction of Si3N4 can effectively lower the densification sintering temperature of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 electrolyte and enhance the room temperature ionic conductivity of the NZSP to 3.82 × 10−4 S cm−1. In addition, since Si3N4 has a high thermal conductivity and can inhibit the transmission of electrons between the grains of the electrolyte matrix, it will effectively hinder the generation of sodium metal dendrites and relieve the concentration of the heat source. Moreover, owing to the desirable interface compatibility of the Na and NZSP-Si3N4 electrolyte, the Na/NZSP-1150-1%Si3N4/Na symmetric battery exhibits excellent stability, and the electrode/electrolyte interface still maintains good integrity even after long-term cycling. The assembled Na/NZSP-1150-1%Si3N4/Na3.5V0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 cell manifests an initial specific capacity of 152.5 mA h g−1, together with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 99.8%. Furthermore, after 200 cycles, the battery displays a capacity retention rate of 82%.
Enhancing ionic conductivity in solid electrolyte by relocating diffusion ions to under-coordination sites

Abstract:Solid electrolytes are highly important materials for improving safety, energy density, and reversibility of electrochemical energy storage batteries. However, it is a challenge to modulate the coordination structure of conducting ions, which limits the improvement of ionic conductivity and hampers further development of practical solid electrolytes. Here, we present a skeleton-retained cationic exchange approach to produce a high-performance solid electrolyte of Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 stemming from the NASICON-type superionic conductor of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 . The introduced lithium ions stabilized in under-coordination structures are facilitated to pass through relatively large conduction bottlenecks inherited from the Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 precursor. The synthesized Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 achieves a low activation energy of 0.21 eV and a high ionic conductivity of 3.59 mS cm −1 at room temperature. Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 not only inherits the satisfactory air survivability from Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 but also exhibits excellent cyclic stability and rate capability when applied to solid-state batteries. The present study opens an innovative avenue to regulate cationic occupancy and make new materials.

Improving Na/Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 Interface via SnO x /Sn Film for High‐Performance Solid‐State Sodium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Sodium (Na) metal batteries have attracted much attention due to their rich resources, low cost, and high energy density. As a promising solid electrolyte, Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) is expected to be used in solid-state Na metal batteries addressing the safety concerns. However, due to the poor contact between NZSP and the Na metal, the interfacial resistance is too large to gain proper performance for practical solid-state batteries (SSBs) application. Here, a SnOx/Sn film is successfully introduced to improve the interface between Na and NZSP for enhancing the electrochemical performance of SSBs. As a result, the Na/NZSP interfacial resistance is dramatically reduced from 581 to 3 Ω cm2. The modified Na||Na symmetric cell keeps cycling over 1500 h with an overpotential of 40 mV at 0.1 mA cm–2 at room temperature. Even at current densities of 0.3 and 0.5 mA cm–2, the cell still maintains an excellent cyclability. When coupled with NaTi2(PO4)3 and a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, the full-cell demonstrates a good performance at 0.2 C and 1 C, respectively. The present work provides an effective way to solve the interface issue of SSBs.

Interface Stability between Na3Zr2Si2PO12 Solid Electrolyte and Sodium Metal Anode for Quasi-Solid-State Sodium Battery

Abstract:Solid electrolytes are renowned for their nonflammable, dendrite-blocking qualities, which also exhibit stability over large potential windows. NASICON-type Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12 (NZSP) is a well-known solid electrolyte material for sodium metal batteries owing to its elevated room temperature sodium-ion (Na+) conductivity and good electrochemical stability. Nevertheless, the strong electrode–electrolyte interfacial resistance restricts its implementation in sodium metal batteries and remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present an efficacious process to enhance the sodium wettability of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 by sputtering a thin gold (Au) interlayer. Our experimental investigation indicates a substantial reduction in interfacial resistance, from 2708 Ω cm2 to 146 Ω cm2, by employing a fine Au interlayer between the Na metal and the NZSP electrolyte. The symmetrical Na||NZSP||Na with a gold interlayer cell shows a steady Na stripping/plating at a high current density of 320 μA cm−2. A quasi-solid-state battery, with NaFePO4 (NFP) as a cathode, metallic sodium as an anode, and a Au-sputtered NZSP electrolyte with polypropylene (PP) soaked in electrolyte as an intermediate layer on the cathode, exhibited a discharge capacity of 100 mAh g−1 and a ~100% Coulombic efficiency at 50 μA cm−2 after the 50th charge/discharge cycle at room temperature (RT).

Abstract:A novel biphasic Na3Zr2Si2PO12/Na3PO4 solid electrolyte is proposed to effectively address critical anode interface challenges for solid-state Na-metal batteries (SSSMBs). The Na3PO4 phase, at an optimal composition of similar to 20 mol%, transforms the interface chemistry throughout the NZSP electrolyte, which results in dense electrolytes with high Young's modulus, rapid ion transport (6.2 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) ) at low activation barrier (0.19 eV), negligible electronic conductivity, and excellent sodiophilicity. The AIMD/DFT calculations and XPS analysis reveal a self-formed, (electro)chemically stable mixed Na+/electron-conducting interphase, comprising Na3P and Na2O, at the Na anode interface. The interphase not only homogenizes the Na+ flux distribution and accelerates the interfacial charge transport, but prevents continuous interfacial reactions, thereby stabilizing the anode interface against dendrite formation. Benefiting from the low-impedance, dendrite-free anode interface, Na symmetric cells demonstrate a low interface resistance of 12.7 Omega cm(2) and exceptional cyclability of 3000 h. Additionally, full cells with Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathodes achieve 93 % capacity retention after 550 cycles at 0.5 C. This research comprehensively elucidates and leverages the critical advantages of Na3PO4 in enhancing the bulk and interface properties of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 solid electrolytes. The design strategy of biphasic solid electrolytes presented here offers new insights into the developing high-performance solid electrolytes for advanced SSSMBs.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and reliable solid-state sodium batteries with superior performance is crucial for stationary energy storage. A key component in facilitating their application is a solid-state electrolyte with high conductivity and stability. Herein, we employed aliovalent cation substitution to enhance ionic conductivity while preserving the crystal structure. Optimized substitution of Y3+ with Zr4+ in Na5YSi4O12 introduced Na+ ion vacancies, resulting in high bulk and total conductivities of up to 6.5 and 3.3 mS cm(-1), respectively, at room temperature with the composition Na4.92Y0.92Zr0.08Si4O12 (NYZS). NYZS shows exceptional electrochemical stability (up to 10 V vs. Na+ /Na), favorable interfacial compatibility with Na, and an excellent critical current density of 2.4 mA cm(-2). The enhanced conductivity of Na+ ions in NYZS was elucidated using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and theoretical simulations, revealing two migration routes facilitated by the synergistic effect of increased Na+ ion vacancies and improved chemical environment due to Zr4+ substitution. NYZS extends the list of suitable solid-state electrolytes and enables the facile synthesis of stable, low-cost Nathorn ion silicate electrolytes.
Composite NASICON (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) Solid-State Electrolyte with Enhanced Na+ Ionic Conductivity: Effect of Liquid Phase Sintering

Abstract:NASICON-type of solid-state electrolyte, Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP), is one of the potential solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state Na battery and Na-air battery. However, in solid-state synthesis, high sintering temperature above 1200 °C and long duration are required, which led to loss of volatile materials and formation of impurities at the grain boundaries. This hampers the total ionic conductivity of NZSP to be in the range of 10-4 S cm-1. Herein, we have reduced both the sintering temperature and time of the NZSP electrolyte by sintering the NZSP powders with different amounts of Na2SiO3 additive, which provides the liquid phase for the sintering process. The addition of 5 wt % Na2SiO3 has shown the highest total ionic conductivity of 1.45 mS cm-1 at room temperature. A systematic study of the effect of Na2SiO3 on the microstructure and electrical properties of the NZSP electrolyte is conducted by the structural study with the help of morphological and chemical observations using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and using focused ion-beam-time of flight-secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The XRD results revealed that cations from Na2SiO3 diffused into the bulk change the stoichiometry of NZSP, leading to an enlarged bottleneck area and hence lowering activation energy in the bulk, which contributes to the increment of the bulk ion conductivity, as indicated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy result. In addition, higher density and better microstructure contribute to improved grain boundary conductivity. More importantly, this study has achieved a highly ionic conductive NZSP only by facile addition of Na2SiO3 into the NZSP powder prior to the sintering stage.

Abstract:Using stable inorganic solid electrolyte to replace organic liquid electrolyte could significantly reduce potential safety risks of rechargeable batteries. Na-superionic conductor (NASICON)-structured solid electrolyte is one of the most promising sodium solid electrolytes and can be employed in solid-state sodium batteries. In this work, a NASICON-structured solid electrolyte Na3.1Zr1.95Mg0.05Si2PO12 was synthesized through a facile solid-state reaction, yielding high sodium-ionic conductivity of 1.33 × 10−3 S·cm−1 at room temperature. The results indicate that Mg2+ is a suitable and economical substitution ion to replace Zr4+, and this synthesis route can be scaled up for powder preparation with low cost. In addition to electrolyte material preparation, solid-state batteries with Na3.1Zr1.95Mg0.05Si2PO12 as electrolyte were assembled. A specific capacity of 57.9 mAh·g−1 is maintained after 100 cycles under a current density of 0.5C rate at room temperature. The favorable cycling performance of the solid-state battery suggests that Na3.1Zr1.95Mg0.05Si2PO12 is an ideal electrolyte candidate for solid-state sodium batteries.

Abstract:High-conductivity solid electrolytes are crucial components for the development of Na-based solid state batteries. However the electrolyte structure prototype and corresponding synthesis method are still lacking. The conventional oxide and sulfide electrolytes are precursor-expensive (e.g. Na2S) or energy-intensive in sintering synthesis (e.g. at 1000 degrees C). Here, we propose a novel anti-perovskite solid electrolyte of Na-rich fluorinated sulfate (Na3SO4F) benefiting from Mg and Cl co-doping by solid state reaction from low-cost precursors at moderate temperature (500 degrees C). The tailored dual doping enables an improvement of ionic conductivity by three orders of magnitude close to 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 60 degrees C. The creation of Na vacancies (by aliovalent Mg doping) and lattice expansion (by substituting F sites with larger-sized Cl ions) are responsible for the conductivity upgrade. A Na-Sn/Fe [Fe(CN)(6)](3) solid state battery based on Na2.98Mg0.01SO4F0.95Cl0.05 electrolyte can reversibly run with a first discharge capacity as high as 91.0 mAh g(-1) and a reversible capacity preserved at 77.0 mAh g(-1). This result paves a way to novel anti-perovskite family of fluorinated sulfates as potential alkali metal ion solid electrolytes beyond already reported A(3)OX (A = Li or Na, X = heavy halogen or hydrogenide anions) anti-perovskites.
Improvement of ionic conductivity and densification of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 solid electrolyte rapidly prepared by microwave sintering

Abstract:Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (labeled as NZSP) material is one of the most promising solid-state electrolytes for solid Na+ batteries. In this paper, the NZSP electrolytes were prepared by the microwave-assisted solid-phase reaction method, and the effects of different sintering temperatures (1050 °C–1150 °C) on phase composition, microstructure, densification, and ionic conductivity of NZSP samples were probed. XRD results demonstrated the NZSP phase could be formed by using microwave sintering at 1050 °C for 2 h. With the increase of sintering temperature, the density and the room-temperature ionic conductivity of the NZSP samples were gradually improved. After microwave sintering at 1125 °C, the NZSP electrolyte with the room-temperature ionic conductivity of 5.26 × 10−4 S/cm was achieved. Besides, the influences of sintering aid NaF with different contents (y wt%) on the densification and ionic conductivity of NZSP were also studied. It was found that the addition of NaF not only increased the density but also improved the ionic conductivity of NZSP samples. The NZSP ceramics with 0.2 wt% NaF additive sintered at 1125 °C showed a relatively high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 6.02 × 10−4 S/cm. Moreover, the activation energy was evaluated by the Arrhenius equation. The Arrhenius plot revealed the specimen with 0.2 wt% NaF exhibited the lowest activation energy of 0.29 eV.

Abstract:Sulfide solid-state electrolytes have garnered considerable attention owing to their notable ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. However, achieving an electrolyte characterized by both high ionic conductivity and a stable interface between the electrode and electrolyte remains challenging, impeding its widespread application. In this work, we present a novel sulfide solid-state electrolyte, Li3.04P0.96Zn0.04S3.92F0.08, prepared through a solid-phase reaction, and explore its usage in all-solid-state lithium sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs). The findings reveal that the Zn, F co-doped solid-state electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.23 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) and a low activation energy (E-a) of 9.8 kJ mol(-1) at room temperature, illustrating the aliovalent co-doping's facilitation of Li-ion migration. Furthermore, benefiting from the formation of a LiF-rich interfacial layer between the electrolyte and the Li metal anode, the Li/Li3.04P0.96Zn0.04S3.92F0.08/Li symmetrical cell exhibits critical current densities (CCDs) of up to 1 mA cm(-2) and maintains excellent cycling stability. Finally, the assembled ASSLSBs exhibit an initial discharge capacity of 1295.7 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 0.05 C and at room temperature. The cell maintains a capacity retention of 70.5% for more than 600 cycles at a high rate of 2 C, representing a substantial improvement compared to the cell with Li3PS4. This work provides a new idea for the design of solid-state electrolytes and ASSLSBs.
